Possible Reason Bucs Won’t Give Vita Vea A Raise
August 17th, 2026The Bucs enjoy giving fans riddles to solve.
The Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson pushes the theory that if something doesn’t make sense on the surface, one must look at actions to determine the reasoning.
And for Joe, Vita Vea not at least getting a raise of some sort for the 2026 season doesn’t make sense. On the surface.
Generally, the Bucs are generous with Team Glazer’s loot for who the team deems its best players, if not most valuable players.
Antoine Winfield, when he signed his contract, was the highest-paid safety in the league.
Tristan Wirfs was richly rewarded as well.
One could also make the case, a year removed, Zyon McCollum was mistakenly rewarded.
Joe could go on.
Now for those who listened to the “JoeBucsFan.com Hour” on WDAE-AM 620/WDAE-FM 95.7 Saturday afternoon, Joe threw out the possibility — strictly and absolutely speculation— that perhaps the Bucs haven’t reworked Vea’s contract is that, just maybe, Vea didn’t have stellar grades based on 2025 Bucs’ internal data and either the Bucs want Vea to prove that was a temporary blip, or they didn’t plan to bring Vea back after the 2026 season, in part, because that leaves a few extra shekels laying around to pay Baker Mayfield.
On face value, Vea is terribly underpaid for his position and status in the league. And Tristan Wirfs retweeted Vea’s retweet from Mike Garafolo of NFL Network that top defensive tackles are making much more than Vea.
The veteran Bucs tackle/nose guard has not practiced this summer because of a sore checkbook back. He apparently has his heels dug in, as does Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.
It seems doubtful a team will agree to a Vea trade unless his contract hassle is first resolved (unless Vea tells a suitor that he will play for $18 million).
The whole point of this drama is for more money, no? Why would Vea play under his current deal with the Bills or the 49ers or Bears, yet he wouldn’t for the same price with the Bucs?
(Anyone see what state taxes are in New York, Illinois or California? Surely Ndamukong Suh does.)
As Joe stated above, it sure smells like there is something preventing Licht from unlocking the Team Glazer vault for Vea. Currently, there are only a handful of people who truly know.

Interesting that Wirfs is taking a side. I’m sensing the locker room souring on the coach and management. Wirfs is best buds w Mayfiled too. Perhaps the vibe really is a**

Joe … ‘The Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson pushes the theory that if something doesn’t make sense on the surface, one must look at actions to determine the reasoning.’
Peterson’s right, except that in negotiations like this, those involved have no desire to let any of us look ‘behind the scene’. Does anyone expect JL to say ‘Yup, we want Vea to suit up here for 2026, but we have no intention of bringing him back next year because of his age’? Or maybe ‘Ya, Baker’s potential contract has tied our hands because of the immense amount of money involved and the number of other key contracts we have to negotiate in 2027’.
All we can do is let it play out and hope for the best.

Physical conditioning.
Defensive tackles and nose tackles are not the same.

One thing to consider is that last season is the first season in along time that Vea has played well above 50% of the defensive snaps. So, perhaps the Bucs want to see him more consistently on the field. As we can surmise from Baker’s situation, the Bucs want see consistent play before they give away the bag. We’ve compared different stats of players he’s making less than but let’s compare how many plays he was on the sidelines over the last few years because he wasn’t in good enough shape to be on the field. This year he played about 75-80% of the defensive snaps and now he wants a raise. Do it again, big boy. The Bucs aren’t going to pay for a one off.

Anyone serious about trading for Vea will likely already have contract parameters drawn up for him to sign that’ll put him closer or into the top ten for the next year or two. Great player but would be nice to add another 2nd or 3rd next year instead. Can’t pay everyone.

The Bucs will need Vea’s money but it might not be for Baker…
– Cody Mauch
– Yaya Diaby
– Chase McLaughlin
– Plus the Bucs may want a different QB if BM sh!ts the bed again this season.
– Plus the Bucs may want to spend more cash on upgrading the CB unit after Morrison misses another 12 games or so.
That’s a ton of cash to spend next season.
Vea is probably done in Tampa.

I think a lot of people are over reading this. It’s all about the money. Vita Vea and Baker wants to get paid. Mike Evans departure was the opposite. He clearly wanted out and didn’t care if he got paid.

Did you read the book, ‘Self Inflicted Wounds,’ by Vita Vea?
At what point does Vita ask himself, “what was I thinking?”
His demands: a trade or a restructured contract with a hefty raise.
His threat: he won’t play unless one of these two demands are met.
His problem: if neither demand is met, and he opts not to play, he makes $0.
The question: how much does he hurt the team by not playing?
The answer: it’s a subjective matter of opinion, so let’s say his play alone does not have enough impact to single handedly change game outcomes.
Vita should just suit up and play, while hoping for a good deal next year.
If he refuses the play this year he’ll never recover the money he lost.
Someone must have convinced #50 he’s better than he actually is. Although a good player, he won’t sniff the Hall of Fame. Someone else should tell him he’s Vita Vea, not Warren Sapp.

He should playing 75% of the snaps for multiple years like everyone else who gets paid in that tier not one year doing it after 50% or less snaps of his career, maybe this hold in is because he only did what they asked him to do and it affected his value long term.

Well for starters VV just out of the blue declared that he wanted a trade and OUT OF TAMPA, not a smooth move. As a matter of fact it’s a terrible first move in any negotiation.
If JL has a 2nd round on the table, take it and don’t look back. It’s not as if a team can’t get to the Super Bowl without a 350 lb NT .
Trade him!

Via has one card in his pocket to get paid this year and still not play, but he’d have to deal it from the bottom of the deck and it would likely end his career. He could fake a hard to prove injury like a back injury. The BUCS would obviously dispute it in court and there would be a crap storm, but he’d have a 50/50 chance of getting paid even though his money isn’t guaranteed. That would definitely destroy his chances of getting a fat contract anywhere else next year. Oh, sure, some desperate team might sign him to a one year prove it contract like what Baker got in 2023, but he will be thirty two years old and supposedly coming off a year long suspicious back injury.. That’s why I really don’t think he will go down that dark path. He could also hold out till whatever week it is that you have to start playing by to get contract credit for the year. I don’t know which week that is. I want to say either seven or ten. That is not going to raise his chances of getting paid elsewhere but it will cost him quite a few game checks.. He has to come back to the team in time to get paid for week one. He might not be actually ready to play for two or three weeks, but he will still get paid for practicing.

Occam’s razor – the simplest explanation is usually the best one.
Vea wants to get paid like the top of the scale DTs.
The top of the scale DTs are all several years younger than him. Chris Jones is the outlier.
Big men break down in their 30s and Vea has, until last season, taken a significant number of snaps. How many times have we seen Vita on the sidelines with his hands on his hips grabbing air? This doesn’t typically get better with age.
Those of you saying “pay the man” are ignoring a few things;
1. Baker aside, Licht has some contracts coming up for younger and/or more valuable players. Pay Vita what he wants and that impacts their ability to sign guys like Mauch or Diaby next season. As someone said, you cannot pay everyone. It’s about the cap, not being cheap.
2. Licht also comes from the Patriot school of team management- better to move on a year too early than a year too late.
3. Licht has to pay him based on how they think he’ll perform, not what he’s done. Maybe the Bucs have done their due diligence and the projections for Vea at age 32/33/34 aren’t pretty.

Think about this: Nacho replaced Vea when he was injured during our super bowl run. He played very well. The Bucs brought Nacho back! Do you think this was a coincidence? The Bucs drafted Capehart! Do you think this was a coincidence? The Bucs are playing bid whist while every one else is playing spades.

Ok, the deadline to report and still get credit is the Tuesday after week 10.
