Possible Reason Bucs Won’t Give Vita Vea A Raise

August 17th, 2026

Hold-in Bad back continues.

The Bucs enjoy giving fans riddles to solve.

The Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson pushes the theory that if something doesn’t make sense on the surface, one must look at actions to determine the reasoning.

And for Joe, Vita Vea not at least getting a raise of some sort for the 2026 season doesn’t make sense. On the surface.

Generally, the Bucs are generous with Team Glazer loot for players the team deems its best, if not most valuable players.

Antoine Winfield, when he signed his contract, was the highest-paid safety in the league. Tristan Wirfs was richly rewarded as well.

One could also make the case, a year removed, Zyon McCollum was mistakenly rewarded.

Joe could go on.

Those who listened to the “JoeBucsFan Hour” on WDAE-AM 620/ WDAE-FM 95.7 Saturday afternoon heard Joe speculate that perhaps the Bucs haven’t reworked Vea’s contract because maybe Vea didn’t have stellar internal grades, you know, the Bucs’ internal data. And either the Bucs want Vea to prove that was a temporary blip, or they didn’t plan to bring Vea back after the 2026 season and instead planned to pay Baker Mayfield and others.

On face value, Vea is terribly underpaid for his NFL position and status. Tristan Wirfs retweeted Vea’s retweet from Mike Garafolo of NFL Network noting top defensive tackles are making much more than Vea.

The veteran Bucs tackle/nose guard has not practiced this summer because of a sore checkbook back. He apparently has his heels dug in, as does Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.

It seems doubtful a team will agree to a Vea trade unless his contract hassle is first resolved (unless Vea tells a suitor that he will play for $18 million).

The whole point of this drama is more money, no? Why would Vea play under his current deal with the Bills or the 49ers or Bears, yet he wouldn’t for the same price with the Bucs? (Anyone see what state taxes are in New York, Illinois or California? Surely Ndamukong Suh has.)

As Joe stated, it sure smells like there is something preventing Licht from unlocking the Team Glazer vault for Vea. Only a handful of people who truly know.

  1. Ruca44 Says:

One hypothesis: Bucs ownership are not sure the current HC will be here next year. Therefore they are not committing to new long term contracts, specially expensive ones like Vita and Baker.

  2. CleanHouse Says:

Interesting that Wirfs is taking a side. I’m sensing the locker room souring on the coach and management. Wirfs is best buds w Mayfiled too. Perhaps the vibe really is a**

  3. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘The Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson pushes the theory that if something doesn’t make sense on the surface, one must look at actions to determine the reasoning.’

Peterson’s right, except that in negotiations like this, those involved have no desire to let any of us look ‘behind the scene’. Does anyone expect JL to say ‘Yup, we want Vea to suit up here for 2026, but we have no intention of bringing him back next year because of his age’? Or maybe ‘Ya, Baker’s potential contract has tied our hands because of the immense amount of money involved and the number of other key contracts we have to negotiate in 2027’.

All we can do is let it play out and hope for the best.

  4. Ndog's Burner Account Says:

Would rather build for the future than overpay for past performance. I love Vea, but the odds of him missing significant time to injury are substantial.

  5. Lessismore Says:

    Physical conditioning.
Defensive tackles and nose tackles are not the same.

  6. Todd Says:

Defense Rules, you should read: Jordanetics: A Journey Into the Mind of Humanity’s Greatest Thinker

  7. ATLBuc Says:

One thing to consider is that last season is the first season in along time that Vea has played well above 50% of the defensive snaps. So, perhaps the Bucs want to see him more consistently on the field. As we can surmise from Baker’s situation, the Bucs want see consistent play before they give away the bag. We’ve compared different stats of players he’s making less than but let’s compare how many plays he was on the sidelines over the last few years because he wasn’t in good enough shape to be on the field. This year he played about 75-80% of the defensive snaps and now he wants a raise. Do it again, big boy. The Bucs aren’t going to pay for a one off.

  8. FlBoy84 Says:

Anyone serious about trading for Vea will likely already have contract parameters drawn up for him to sign that’ll put him closer or into the top ten for the next year or two. Great player but would be nice to add another 2nd or 3rd next year instead. Can’t pay everyone.

  9. Marine Buc Says:

The Bucs will need Vea’s money but it might not be for Baker…

    – Cody Mauch
    – Yaya Diaby
    – Chase McLaughlin
    – Plus the Bucs may want a different QB if BM sh!ts the bed again this season.
    – Plus the Bucs may want to spend more cash on upgrading the CB unit after Morrison misses another 12 games or so.

That’s a ton of cash to spend next season.

Vea is probably done in Tampa.

  10. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I think a lot of people are over reading this. It’s all about the money. Vita Vea and Baker wants to get paid. Mike Evans departure was the opposite. He clearly wanted out and didn’t care if he got paid.

  11. JA Says:

Did you read the book, ‘Self Inflicted Wounds,’ by Vita Vea?
At what point does Vita ask himself, “what was I thinking?”
His demands: a trade or a restructured contract with a hefty raise.
His threat: he won’t play unless one of these two demands are met.
His problem: if neither demand is met, and he opts not to play, he makes $0.
The question: how much does he hurt the team by not playing?
The answer: it’s a subjective matter of opinion, so let’s say his play alone does not have enough impact to single handedly change game outcomes.
Vita should just suit up and play, while hoping for a good deal next year.
If he refuses the play this year he’ll never recover the money he lost.
Someone must have convinced #50 he’s better than he actually is. Although a good player, he won’t sniff the Hall of Fame. Someone else should tell him he’s Vita Vea, not Warren Sapp.

  12. Bucsalltheway Says:

He should playing 75% of the snaps for multiple years like everyone else who gets paid in that tier not one year doing it after 50% or less snaps of his career, maybe this hold in is because he only did what they asked him to do and it affected his value long term.

  13. SB~LV 🏈 Says:

Well for starters VV just out of the blue declared that he wanted a trade and OUT OF TAMPA, not a smooth move. As a matter of fact it’s a terrible first move in any negotiation.
If JL has a 2nd round on the table, take it and don’t look back. It’s not as if a team can’t get to the Super Bowl without a 350 lb NT .
    Trade him!

  14. Alanbucsfan Says:

From ownership, Licht’s and Bowles’ perspective, the Bucs are concerned with THIS YEAR.
The Bucs have most of the leverage in negotiating with Vea.
Yes, he’s under contract and yes, he’s underpaid by NFL standards.
Does Vea playing make the Bucs’ D better and give the Bucs a better chance of winning? Yes.
And if the Bucs don’t win THIS YEAR, are Licht’s and Bowles’ jobs safe?
That’s what will be evaluated by ownership.
A trade is unlikely unless Bucs get a 1st round pick or Starter and that is even more Unlikely.
That’s why Vea will play for Bucs THIS YEAR after some kind of Deal is worked out.

  15. Fred McNeil Says:

Via has one card in his pocket to get paid this year and still not play, but he’d have to deal it from the bottom of the deck and it would likely end his career. He could fake a hard to prove injury like a back injury. The BUCS would obviously dispute it in court and there would be a crap storm, but he’d have a 50/50 chance of getting paid even though his money isn’t guaranteed. That would definitely destroy his chances of getting a fat contract anywhere else next year. Oh, sure, some desperate team might sign him to a one year prove it contract like what Baker got in 2023, but he will be thirty two years old and supposedly coming off a year long suspicious back injury.. That’s why I really don’t think he will go down that dark path. He could also hold out till whatever week it is that you have to start playing by to get contract credit for the year. I don’t know which week that is. I want to say either seven or ten. That is not going to raise his chances of getting paid elsewhere but it will cost him quite a few game checks.. He has to come back to the team in time to get paid for week one. He might not be actually ready to play for two or three weeks, but he will still get paid for practicing.

  16. StormyInFl Says:

Occam’s razor – the simplest explanation is usually the best one.

Vea wants to get paid like the top of the scale DTs.

The top of the scale DTs are all several years younger than him. Chris Jones is the outlier.

Big men break down in their 30s and Vea has, until last season, taken a significant number of snaps. How many times have we seen Vita on the sidelines with his hands on his hips grabbing air? This doesn’t typically get better with age.

    Those of you saying “pay the man” are ignoring a few things;

    1. Baker aside, Licht has some contracts coming up for younger and/or more valuable players. Pay Vita what he wants and that impacts their ability to sign guys like Mauch or Diaby next season. As someone said, you cannot pay everyone. It’s about the cap, not being cheap.

    2. Licht also comes from the Patriot school of team management- better to move on a year too early than a year too late.

    3. Licht has to pay him based on how they think he’ll perform, not what he’s done. Maybe the Bucs have done their due diligence and the projections for Vea at age 32/33/34 aren’t pretty.

  17. ATLBuc Says:

Think about this: Nacho replaced Vea when he was injured during our super bowl run. He played very well. The Bucs brought Nacho back! Do you think this was a coincidence? The Bucs drafted Capehart! Do you think this was a coincidence? The Bucs are playing bid whist while every one else is playing spades.

  18. Bucnbeers Says:

Just go find another big a$$ Samoan.

  19. Fred McNeil Says:

Ok, the deadline to report and still get credit is the Tuesday after week 10.

  20. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Fred

“He could also hold out till whatever week it is that you have to start playing by to get contract credit for the year. I don’t know which week that is.”

Vea can hold out at least the first 7 weeks and still get credit toward an accrued NFL season.

To Accrue a Season (Free Agency Credit): Must be on the roster for 6 games.

To Prevent Contract Tolling (Fulfilling the Year): If a player is in the final year of a contract and refuses to render services, the team can argue the contract “tolls” (freezes and pushes the entire contract year to the next season) unless the player plays enough to satisfy the agreement.

Precedent (such as past arbiter rulings) generally suggests playing at least 8 games avoids contract tolling, meaning a holdout past 10 weeks carries high risk that the team will toll the contract.

Key Holdout PenaltiesDaily Fines: Players under contract are subject to mandatory fines of $50,000 per day for missing training camp. Under the current CBA, teams cannot waive these fines for veterans.

This might actually happen… If his back is injured he can’t play anyways and he might not be able to pass a physical either.

Keep in mind – $50K per day fine can be imposed for holding out – this might be why Vea is “nursing” that back injury…

  21. ATLBuc Says:

At any point, the Bucs can give Vea a physical and determine whether or not that back injury is real or Memorex.

  22. TBBucFan Says:

Was Vea not amongst the highest paid at his position when he signed the extension? This happens extremely often. Players want to be paid their worth and yet they want the security of a multi-year contract. It stands to reason that as the cap grows and the years go by that others will be paid more than you. Didn’t hear anything about Vea being underpaid until one year was remaining. It’s the age old conundrum. If you want to be paid as the highest then gamble on yourself and do one year contracts. Neither side really wants that though, because if you go far into the playoffs, you can’t afford your team.

  23. Marine Buc Says:

    @ ATL

    I agree.

However the Bucs are probably not going to start playing hardball with Vea quite yet. Thus the back injury excuse.

Bad optics to start fining your best defensive player $50K per day. For holding out and wanting to be traded.

When those fines start accruing then you know the “gloves are off” and things are getting ready to get nasty between both parties.

    Oh goody.

  24. Steven007 Says:

As mentioned repeatedly, next year is a year with many mouths to feed. Obviously the GM and Greenberg, our cap guy, are well aware of this. I think this is a combination of them thinking ahead as well as Vita playing the cards he thinks he has and gambling that he can control the narrative to an extent. And to an extent, he has. Though I think the advice he got from Suh was poor I think. Suh is looking at it as if he were in Vita’s shoes. And if he were, he would have more leverage because he was a better player than Vita is. Though I think the outcome would likely be the same given the cap issues coming up next year. Also, Vita is considering himself a defensive tackle as opposed to a nose tackle. Similar positions obviously, but different salary considerations. NTs generally make less than DTs. So there’s this big toxic stew of variables and each day that passes it seems more likely that he has played his last snap here.

  25. Letsbuccingo Says:

Same as McCoy wrong side of thirty for Vea

  26. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Stormy,
“Big men break down in their 30s and Vea has, until last season, taken a significant number of snaps.”
    ___________

VV had a record year last season with 763 snaps. (Probably part of the reason he feels entitled)
    His career average is 586/season.

  27. Gofortheface30 Says:

I am actually happy that I have reached a point in my life where I no longer care about these kind of subjects. Maybe it’s apathy, I dunno – whatever, but it’s the same talking point every year for the past 30 yrs. Guys holding out and injuries. I’m so over hearing about both. It’s boring, it’s draining, it’s exhausting. Especially injuries. If you’re the type of guy that is always hurt – then go away tbh. I’ve become numb to it. College football is even worse when people argue about sTrEnGtH oF sChEdUlE (every-single-f’ing-year), everyone acts like it’s part of the fun. No. It’s grating. It’s every bit as annoying as politics. It actually amazes me that more people don’t get tired of the same stupid bs slop, with the same stupid bs content on shows like first take. Win me the game and better yet, win me some money. Not gnna sit around thinking about the feelings of vita vea deserving another 30 mil. So g€¥

  28. Marine Buc Says:

    @ dooosh

    What’s up bud?

Good point… Vea did play more snaps last season due the our little “china doll” Kancey and the horrible depth at DT.

However – I still consider Vea a NT.

He is NOT a DT and SHOULD NOT be paid as a DT…

  29. StormyInFl Says:

“VV had a record year last season with 763 snaps. (Probably part of the reason he feels entitled)
    His career average is 586/season.”

All the more reason *not* to pay him. His overall track record says last season was an outlier and there’s a very good chance he goes back to his prior level of availability once he gets paid.

  30. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“All the more reason *not* to pay him. His overall track record says last season was an outlier and there’s a very good chance he goes back to his prior level of availability once he gets paid.”

Vitas’ snap share has been increasing every year since ’22, not an outlier at all when you’ve been steadily playing more and more for 4 yrs straight. Has missed many games due to injury either, and is as good as any interior DLmen in the league.

“Good point… Vea did play more snaps last season due the our little “china doll” Kancey and the horrible depth at DT.”

Yes played more, but the reasons you stated are make believe, do better.

  31. StormyInFl Says:

It still doesn’t change the fact that Vea is 31. Statistically, these guys fall off a cliff sometime soon after age 30. Licht has to pay him for what they think he will do, not what he’s done. There’s no way he’s worth close to the top of the market. Anyone who ends up paying him that for anything over two years is likely to regret it.

If they believe the drop off is coming, then sinking big $ into an aging NT isn’t smart team management. It’s not about rewarding Vea – it’s about what’s the better long term strategy.

  32. DoooshLaRue Says:

    MarineBuc,

    Hey man.
Agree and for the record I’m over VV and his attitude.
I’m hoping for a trade and/or player in return.
Once a player pulls this sh!t I’m done with them.

  33. Jeffbuc Says:

Vita should get some advice from Laveon bell he played here with Vea for a year. Call him ask him how holding out and not playing a season worked for him. He lost a lot of money and was never the same running back after that. Now he is doing celebrity boxing matches to try and get money. Bet he wishes he had that 15 plus million he lost by thinking he held all the cards also. But I say make him play you have him by the ball. He can’t go out there and not give it his all or that will affect his next contract with new team. He has to play his best in a contract year. He has a jack and a 2 in his hand. Unless someone offers a 2nd and a NT prospect for him now. We haven’t had a player we could trade in a long time. It just seems like the pats and other perennial good teams would always trade players for future picks. And would also trade for players all the time. Remember always being like damn the patriots traded for him why wouldn’t we do that the rich get richer.

  34. kirk Says:

My own opinion is just this. I would want to be traded away from a coach that can’t win when it counts. Bowles needs to go.

  35. Marine Buc Says:

    @ warrin

“Yes played more, but the reasons you stated are make believe, do better.”

You know I always strive to do better.

Can you please expound on this statement?

Kancey has missed 22 games in 3 seasons… He is our starting DT.

    Am I wrong?

  36. Marine Buc Says:

    @ dooosh

“Agree and for the record I’m over VV and his attitude.
I’m hoping for a trade and/or player in return.
Once a player pulls this sh!t I’m done with them.”

    AMEN brother.

    Same here…

  37. Marky mark Says:

Its the same reason they won’t give Baker a raise. They want to see if they retain Bowles or not who is in a prove it contract year.

  38. Lt. Dan Says:

@Bucnbeers: Vita is Tongan not Samoan. Good point though.

  39. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Markey

    True.

This is a franchise in transition…

All the coaches, the QB and the GM could be elsewhere in 2027.

  40. Bucnjim Says:

This isn’t personal and it’s not complicated by either party. Are the Bucs going to the Super Bowl this year? Nope still rebuilding and need Several pieces especially in the secondary. Why would they extend Vea? Even if the Bucs are two years away, his career will be about over. Trade him to a contender (which is probably what he wants anyway) and continue building through the draft.

  41. Tampa2ATL Says:

Maybe we need what we have left to sign veteran CB. Adoree Jackson is still a free agent.

  42. CosmoKramer Says:

Euro trash soccer teams cost a lot of money to run and maintain.

The Bucs are just a cash register for the Glazer kids. They are playing a shell game.

I smell a complete and permanent tear down after this next upcoming Todd Bowles dumpster fire of 2026.

  43. Marky mark Says:

Cosmo i get attacked for bringing up The Glazers other football team. Some ignorant dood tried to tell me Manu was sold. No Sir Jim has,a 29% stake and only calls the shots on Football issues. So player transfers etc.. But it can result in cash transfers in to the Bucs. ManU will pick up 100 million pounds this year due to Euro wide Champions League qualification.

  44. Marky mark Says:

Lt. dDan. Typical West Point Lt trying to correct everybody on inconsequential facts. But Mr. Know it all got it wrong. He was born in the USA as Bruce sang in that other Vietnam movie.

Vita Vea was born in Milpitas, California, not Samoa. He is an American citizen and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area.
His parents are from Tonga, so his family heritage is Tongan.
Tonga is an independent country in the South Pacific—not a U.S. territory.

  45. SB~LV 🏈 Says:

    VV = BB
    Bye bye

  46. Winny Testaverde Says:

None of these “win now” teams mentioned…Bills…Niners…Bears and Rams if Donald ends his publicity stunt and stays retired…want to offer a lucrative long term deal to VV. That’s the whole point of the Bucs taking a stand ( sort of…should really send him home ).

It’s almost as if they need to dupe a team with more dollars than sense…Browns, Jets. The Bucs could be in that tier of cellar dwellers if this malaise continues.

  47. MelvinJunior Says:

I remember sitting at a birthday/Bucs Party and a couple of local CCC D-Linemen were there talking about how much they loved Vea and all about him losing that weight and being in such great shape, & being such a BADASS, & etc. I told ‘em… Yeah, that’s because he knows he’s running out of “Guaranteed MONEY” soon, and he’s playing for his next contract negotiations. He also KNOWS it will prob be his LAST big bite of the apple. And, in all honesty, the Bucs really need to move him. They asked me what he was making right now, and then both, immediately started googling his contract… Then, looked at me and was like, “damn, how did you know that!?” Cause, I googled it yesterday LoL.

  48. Herbiebuc Says:

Blaming the HC for a Gm management decision is crazy as it gets!

  49. MelvinJunior Says:

It’s time to finally turn the page on the entire Lickt-Bowles-Baker Era (and everyone else, who’s played a part of it)… It’s just continuing to hold up back. It’s time to move on and start fresh.

  50. itzok Says:

Vea is old and fat and only plays 75 % of the snaps. is probably only good for 60% He probably be capped at 40 plays a game to be effective.

Face it our owners are broke. They used to steal money from the soccer team in england but that pipeline was cut off by the new owner who runs the operation now.

malcolm glazer was a genius he bought that soccer team basically 0 dollars down and seller financed the whole purchase. He got paid to buy the team and his kids lived off of it until the gravy train was cut off. That’s why they wont fire Bowles they can’t pay Baker or Vea

  51. Confido75 Says:

Vea should play this year and hit free agency hard next season. If you had two or three more years on your current deal I get it, but its one season. Its not like you work at KFC and your struggling to pay rent. You look stupud and your pissing the wrong people off now. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you as they say.

  52. SmokyMountainBucsFan Says:

Will he play for another team with the same deal he’s already signed to? I don’t know why don’t you ask ME. Yes and he took less. Is Vita hungry to win another one like Mike, or is he all about the money? I think he’s just a greedy player who doesn’t deserve whatever he’s wanting. He’s really just been a part timer for the last few seasons. Please just let him go

  53. Joncyn90 Says:

@StormyInFl Says A record year?? A total of 34 tackles and 4.5 sacks and if you are going to talk about run defense in 2025 they ranked 5th but the year they won the Superbowl in 2021 they ranked 1st and Vea only played the first 5 games.

  54. Will Says:

Yes it appears he’s a greedy player, and knowing that financial advisor Suh is in the background only validates that thought.

  55. SlyPirate Says:

    VITA VEA ISSUES

    1. “Just Pay the Man!!!”
The Bucs have $8M in cap room. They don’t have enough to pay, and they want to preserve their current cap for vets (DBs) that get cut.

    2. Current Contract
Considering #1, increasing VV this year would incure a future dead cap. Why hurt the team when he’s under contract? That $18M will look a lot better to VV when he starts losing it.

    3. Extension
Obviously VV thinks he’s worth $28-$30M/year. He probably wants 2-3 years. He’s 31 years old. Too big of a gamble at his age. Especially if Bowles is gone EOY.

    4. Trade VV
*MOST LIKELY* “We have no desire to trade VV,” translates to “It’s a big price tag.” The Bucs have at least 3 suitors. They leaked that information to create a bidding war. Licht is playing this for a big haul. I love it.

    5. Don’t Negiate with Terrorists
Devin White, Baker, VV … Licht doesn’t negotiate with guys oppose the team. LVD, Evans, Godwin, Wirfs, AWJ … Licht hooks guys up that act like team players.

VV looks like an idiot standing around at practice, signing signs, doing “poor me” pod casts. No one on the team, especially the young guys, want to be VV. Allowing VV make a fool of himself helps ensure future players act more professionally.

  56. Alexandre Nascimento Says:

To me it seems that M1K3 leaving and Lavonte retiring made both Baker and Vea wanting new deals now instead of waiting the 2026 season come to an end.
If the Bucs had paid them (#13 and #54) both, my guess is that they (#6 and # 50) would “understand” the team side of busisness.

  57. catcard202 Says:

I’d say that it is data driven analysis that is keeping the Bucs FO from making Vea happy with a fat new extension…Vita is 31.5 yrs old as of now…He will be quickly approaching 32 by the end of the 2026 season. And NFL DT’s and NG’s show pretty steady declining production metrics, especially during their ages 32-34 seasons.

To me, it makes no sense to invest in declining players…Even ones that have been really really good…Because you aren’t paying for what they used to, you are paying what they are now & what they are expected to be going into the future. (I said the same thing about ME13 last off-season after he fell off a map – even when he was “healthy” for 8 games!)

The Eagles made Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis the highest paid (single team) tandem of DT’s in the NFL…But they are ages 25 & 26 respectfully…They are just now entering their prime years. It’s makes sense to try and lock those guys up – if you can afford it within your team building salary projections.

Vea – at 31.5 – is his past prime production window and ample supporting historical data points on DT’s of that age is not in his favor. No good FO is going to overpay to keep him happy. (JMO)

  58. catcard202 Says:

Second comment…As a post-June 1 roster cut…The FO could create ~$18M in immediate cap space to to enable the FO to target several quality depth pieces that don’t make other 53-man rosters later this month.

No, it’s not idea to release someone that can help the Bucs win games…But there is not guarantee that Vea helps the team win more games the 1st haldf of the season after “holding-in” for all of camp. It’s a 50-50 prop.

Licht has to weigh the potential benefit of finding quality depth late (from a list of guys that are in game shape) vs holding on to Vea in the hope he can be productive at 31 after not going to be game ready after missing all of camp)

  59. 3rd and 28 Says:

Perhaps the ghost Mr. culverhouse is real. For evidently it has awaken. Say it ain’t so Joe.

  60. Wolfet Says:

It was not a good move, to demand a trade. As bad as Baker came off, he wants to stay. Let’s be honest, is anyone going to pay Vea $25m per year for 3 years? He has been very good, but at this point he is just good. Someone offers a second round pick, I am jumping on it.
