Lavonte David Couldn’t “Find A Motivation Factor”
March 24th, 2026
Health was not much of a factor in Lavonte David’s retirement decision, the Bucs legend explained today on WDAE radio.
David said he just simply couldn’t find the motivation to continue playing.
Joe won’t be cynical and suggest the money wasn’t to David’s liking.
“It kind of dawned on me, probably about a week ago, that it was time for me to, you know, let the game go and move forward what what’s God got planned for me in my next life,” David told The Drive.
“… Every time I came into a season, you know, I always had a point to prove, and I just thought to myself there’s really nothing left to prove. I always try to find a motivation factor but I couldn’t find it. So I just came to the realization, ‘like yeah, maybe it’s just time for you to just let the game go.’ It’s been an incredible 14 years. It’s been an incredible journey to get me this far. And I don’t have no regrets about anything that I’ve been through and I have no regrets about my decision.”
David said his offseason knee surgery left him feeling great and he was confident in his playing ability because he responded adn recovered from the same surgery successfully in a prior season. “I think it was all just set it stone in my mind that maybe it’s just time to call it a career. I’m already happy with what I’ve done thus far,” David said.”
Was the Bucs’ losing run at the end of last season a factor? Absolutely not, said David. “If I was really pissed off about that, I’d be coming back for my 15th year to change that.”
Interestingly, David’s timeline of deciding “about a week ago” didn’t jibe with what he said earlier in the day when he noted that Mike Evans knew David’s retirement decision before Evans left the Bucs for San Francisco 15 days ago.
Joe is glad David losing his motivation is what drove him to retire. That’s the way to go. He hung it up on his terms.

He said he was getting his knee drained every week last season
He probably got tired of the pain

I thought it was interesting that re said in his press conference that the defense will be going to a 3-4. No one has mentioned that. I thought that was huge news. How does that change what our defensive needs are?

i respect the fact he was honest with himself that it was time to pack it. Top 5 all-time Buc!

The Bucs blew it by not taking an ILB last year when they wasted their number first round pick on depth at WR when they had a gaping chasm at ILB.
I wish SVD the best, but betting 2025 on him was as a starting ILB almost as dumb as using a second round pick for a backup quarterback when they were trying to repeat as SB champs.
The Bucs are now behind the need curve with their draft capital, and they really need to trade back from 15 to get more picks.
The Bucs need a first or early second round big guy who can stonewall the run and bring serious inside pressure on the quarterback.
Even with Kancey and Vea healthy, they need one more beast in that front three. And, it needs to be someone who can bring an A game to the NT spot if Vea is out for a spell.
And, the Bucs need a first or early second round ILB who can cover, blitz and run stop from sideline to sideline.
And, the Bucs need a solid Day 2 CB.
Bring enough inside pressure to disrupt the pocket while covering well underneath and down the field, and a group of good, solid dependable 3rd and 4th round OLBs like Yaya Diaby and Anthony Nelson can clean up the rest.
Use a later pick to take a tall, strong, fast developmental WR.

I have to disagree with that statement. That was actually pretty smart especially, when Ebuka blows up this year.

And the fact that Evans left #99 so yeah it was a very good draft at that spot. If EE would have gone someplace else and been great peeps would have been sticking the JL doll with more pins. Some folks are never satisfied. Actually the timing was better with the LB’s this year, so yeah I would say it was a smart move.

Mike, Hall, now David. Wonder what the players are indicating? Any of you Homers know? My “other” team keeps adding 2nd tier players, OL today, while JL is probably in the Bahamas. 49rs will let the scrubs fight it out in pre-season and add to their depth. They signed Jones two years ago and now they will likely flip him for a draft pick or have a #1 backup for QB.

Fourteen years playing linebacker at a high level in the NFL? At age 36 his knees are worn out. Once the cartilage is gone, it’s gone for good. LVD not only saw the writing on the wall — he felt it. Smart man! Legendary career! Bask in your well-earned retirement Lavonte. Job done with distinction!!

Tells you what he thinks about the state of the Franchise….

Another run from the Bowzo Defense. He may surface someplace else.

Another unmotivated player leaves this unmotivated team. Bowleso strikes again. It’s a Bucs life
March 24th, 2026 at 7:33 pm
Hey. When the retirement mode sets in, the lack of motivation sets in. It is the same in any career. I had a successful career and was ready to continue on. However, like David I felt I had nothing else to prove and suddenly found myself unmotivated. I announced my retirement and instantly felt really good. David sounded the same way. He had given his all for 14 years and nothing was left.
His play was declining and it was time to go on his terms. I will never forget Brooks and watching his play decline and hoped he would retire. His being let go was a sad moment. I am glad David left on his terms. Well with that said so did Evans. How about that.
Sad to say but the Bucs have so many holes and appear to be going the wrong way on a one way street. Hard to be a fan right now.
David has been great to watch for so many years.
March 24th, 2026 at 7:34 pm
Ticket buyers srr running into the same lack of “motivation factor,” I bet.
March 24th, 2026 at 7:39 pm
This season is TB & JL’s prove it season. Either they will or will not. At this point I doubt they will have success. Too many missing pieces. The defense will be devoured.
March 24th, 2026 at 7:48 pm
I thought that our qb, was a motivator? I guess not?? No one wants to play with this qb! It’s sad!!!! Two HOF, leaves the team in the same off season, not a good look at all!!!!
March 24th, 2026 at 7:52 pm
Lavonte, one of the best. So enjoyed watching you play. Whether the team was good or not, that was never in question with you. Such a brave hearted kind man. Thank you sir Blessings to you and your family enjoy life 🫶

dbbcpa … ‘I thought it was interesting that re said in his press conference that the defense will be going to a 3-4. No one has mentioned that. I thought that was huge news.’
Watched LVD’s entire press conference, but I guess I must’ve slept through that because I didn’t hear him mention anything about the Bucs going back to a 4-3.
Where abouts in his news conference did you hear that?
March 24th, 2026 at 8:09 pm
LMAO watching someone crying every thread about Baker. I hope they extend him just to watch you lose your mind. It’s amusing to watch.
March 24th, 2026 at 8:10 pm
toopanca … Doesn’t do any good to preach to this choir because Joe’s already cued them on what all the songs & the sermon is gonna be. And it doesn’t include drafting another beast for the interior DLine. IF we do get another one, chances are he’ll be at least 40 years old.
March 24th, 2026 at 8:23 pm
My recollection of Lavonte’s comment on 3-4 vs 4-3: He was talking about a conversion earlier in his career. You guys would remember any variations in defense.
March 24th, 2026 at 8:25 pm
…it was when he was talking about a front office/coaching regime change? He said he thought he might possibly be out of a job……

Yeah, that was really stupid of them, drafting a top-notch wide receiver the season before Evans quit the team [insert eye roll here].

Actually, the sad part is that you base your being a fan on whether or not the Bucs are bonafide contenders. Sorry dude, that’s not being a fan. It’s being a bandwagon follower.
March 24th, 2026 at 8:37 pm
HeavyE said: “No one wants to play with this qb”
Yeah, because everybody knows that a middle linebacker lines up right next to the QB every play.
March 24th, 2026 at 8:40 pm
Good for you, Lavonte. You’ve been a great player for fourteen years and you’re a good man. The Bucs have been blessed by your efforts.
March 24th, 2026 at 8:49 pm
Sadly this team is going to suck next season. What a shame. Poor Leadership, coaches failed and the team is on a downfall slump. Drafting and FA was horrible.
March 24th, 2026 at 9:00 pm
Enjoy your retirement Lavonte, it is well deserved
Thank you for the blood sweat and tears and the incredible way of being
The Man the myth the Legend !!! Good luck in all your future endeavors
March 24th, 2026 at 9:17 pm
Lavonte is 36 with over 1,700 tackles and 14 seasons of wear, and his production has already started to taper.
He leaves the game still respected and effective, instead of staying one year too long and watching his legacy erode.
All timer but doesn’t get the credit. Shame. Hope he is lauded in the HOF
March 24th, 2026 at 9:30 pm
Wish he would have waited until after the draft to announce this.
Now if the Bucs are planning on trading up to get a LB (see Sunny Styles) or stay put, other teams now know the Bucs have a huge need at the position and will leap frog the Bucs. Bucs should have kept this secret for another 5 weeks.
March 24th, 2026 at 9:50 pm
Stars not being “motivated” or motivated to be here is a big problem.
March 24th, 2026 at 10:10 pm
HeavyE,
If it makes you feel better, keep cracking on Baker. Fact is sometime in the next 12 mos Jason Licht will be offering $50Mill/yr to keep Baker in Tampa. With a huge 2026 meaning 45TD;4500yrds passing; 12INT, Baker will command 55-60mill/yr as a free agent. Mayfield will get the lasr laugh over a bunch of football duds posting here that were never was; or, never will be. Will be happy to name the duds. For the most part everyone knows who you guys are.
March 24th, 2026 at 10:59 pm
Happy Retirement LVD. You are truly one of The Bucs legendary players.
March 24th, 2026 at 11:10 pm
2-7
3rd and 28
No one knowing WTF they’re supposed to do. That will kill motivation pretty quick.
March 24th, 2026 at 11:33 pm
Well, todds scheme isnt very motivational, so i get it.

Headline says it all “Lavonte David Couldn’t “Find A Motivation Factor”
March 25th, 2026 at 9:56 am
@Gipper, and we will still be losers, just like our little leprechaun qb, so if you are ready to be losing for 5-6 yrs, You are Truly the loser, just like the leprechaun!!!
March 25th, 2026 at 10:01 am
He must be a little pissed that in 14yrs he couldn’t get one more tackle to be the all time leader and pass Brooks!

The answer to the D switching to a 4-3 is……..Based on recent discussions and 2026 offseason analysis, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not switching to a traditional 4-3 defense, but rather continuing to operate a hybrid, attacking 3-4 scheme under head coach Todd Bowles.
Key details regarding the Buccaneers’ defensive scheme:
Hybrid Approach: While officially listed as a 3-4, Bowles’ defense is flexible, frequently shifting into 4-man lines (especially in nickel packages), which are used roughly 70% of the time in the modern NFL.
“Attack” Mode: The focus is on an aggressive, attacking style rather than strict, traditional “two-gap” 3-4 principles, allowing edge defenders and linemen to play with versatility.
Personnel Continuity: The team continues to look for players who fit this flexible, aggressive front, such as in the 2026 offseason, where the focus remains on versatile pass rushers.
While some fans and analysts have debated the effectiveness of the current 3-4, the team has maintained this hybrid philosophy since transitioning to it in 201

“I thought it was interesting that re said in his press conference that the defense will be going to a 3-4. No one has mentioned that.”

No, what David said was when Arians became coach, the team at that time was running a 4-3 D. Arians and Todd were switching to a 3-4 D, which we currently run. The reason LVD said that was he has always been a MLB in a 4-3 D and was ready to leave the team thinking he would not like being in a 3-4, but Arians and Todd talked to him about how he would be used in a 3-4. LVD liked what he was told and stayed with the Bucs

Donald G and Senor Harry … Thanks for clearing that up. It seemed highly doubtful that Todd Bowles would swing our defense back to a 4-3.
For those who don’t understand why Bowles defense is called a ‘hybrid 3-4’ there are a lot of quality explanations that you can find through the internet. Just for kicks, ask AI to ‘explain Todd Bowles’ hybrid 3-4 defense’. Here’s what it kicks back …
‘Todd Bowles’ hybrid 3-4 defense is a complex, aggressive, and highly multiple scheme that prioritizes player versatility, deception, and front-seven pressure over rigid positional assignments. While technically defined as a 3-4 due to three down linemen and four linebackers, Bowles frequently shifts to 4-3 and nickel looks, utilizing four-man pass rushes or creative blitzes to force mistakes, as seen in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Super Bowl LV victory.
o Key Principles of the Bowles Defense
1 – Multiple Fronts and Hybrid Nature: Although technically a 3-4, the defense is “hybrid,” frequently employing even-front (4-3) looks in nickel packages. It is designed to be versatile, adapting to the talent on the roster rather than forcing players into a strict system.
2 – Aggressive Blitzing and “Illusion of Pressure”: Bowles is known for using heavy pressure, often blitzing with inside linebackers (5-man pressures) rather than just relying on cornerbacks or safeties. A key element is the “illusion of pressure,” where they align to look like they are sending many rushers, only to drop some back into unexpected coverage zones, confusing quarterbacks.
3 – Positional Flexibility: Defensive linemen often work in a “two-gap” system where they are responsible for holding up blockers, allowing athletic inside linebackers like Lavonte David to roam freely and make plays. Outside linebackers are expected to be versatile, serving as both pass rushers and edge defenders.
4 – Disguised Coverage: The defense relies on rotating coverage, often appearing to show a “closed post” (single-high safety) before shifting into different zone or man combinations.
“Show” vs. “Go”: Bowles will often show a specific pressure look before shifting to a 4-3 or 3-4 front at the snap, rarely rushing with the same combination twice to prevent offensive linemen from becoming comfortable.
o Key Components in the Scheme
1 – Elite Interior Disruptors: Players like Vita Vea and Ndamukong Suh have been crucial, acting as “disruptors” who command double teams and stop the run, even if their sack numbers are not always high.
2 – Versatile Inside Linebackers: These players are vital for blitzing and covering in the middle of the field.
3 – Smart Secondary: Because of the complex, multiple nature of the front, the secondary must be able to communicate effectively, often adapting to “sticky” man coverage or strict zone assignments.
Their explanation also noted that the system’s complexity is often cited as a challenge for rookies. To me the keys are that we actually predominantly use a 4-man rush, so those guys need to be ‘beefy & nasty’, plus our ILBs need to be top-tier. When that’s missing, Bowles’ defense struggles (as we’ve been seeing?).
