Timing Key In Mike Evans Process
March 4th, 2026So in five short days, various NFL insiders like Adam Schefter, Dianna Russini and Ian Rapoport will start spitting out free agent deal after deal on social media, announcing X player has agreed to a multi-year contract.
It’s a wildly fun and stressful time across the league.
Joe loves it. Hope rings for fans everywhere with that Monday free agency dinner bell.
The Bucs, of course, are building a big part of their free agency plan around Mike Evans returning for a 13th season. But how quickly do the Bucs need a decision from Evans in order to avoid losing players — either guys on their own roster like Cade Otton and Logan Hall, or free agents from other clubs that won’t wait for Tampa Bay to make a decision?
Suppose Evans waits 48 hours to pick a team? Suppose he actually wants to visit another team in person, like free agents used to do 10-plus years ago? Damn, by Wednesday, the Schefters of the world will have announced 50 or 60 signings/re-signings.
The timing of everything intrigues Joe. Obviously, the Bucs want to re-sign Evans before Monday at noon. That’s still possible, no matter what nonsense flows from the mouth of Evans’ agent.
In the coming hours/days, look for the Bucs to restructure contracts to clear salary cap room. The Bucs have plenty of deals in place that can be re-worked. Also remember that the Bucs can sign Evans, even for one year, and add up to “four void years” to his contract to kick salary cap charges down the road.
Still, an early decision on Evans could help the Bucs avoid losses in free agency — in-house players or fresh-blood targets.

You can not as an organization wait for Evans. Give him your best shot and tell him it is off the table by Monday. Evans can not hold the organization hostage and I don’t think he will.
Testing free agency is an ego thing, am I wanted and love. Sad that players need it.

I don’t see this as an ego thing for Mike, but a huge career decision. He is at the end of his storied career, and now he is in control of the final chapter. Does he stay put , which is in many ways easier on him, family, teamates,. or take a chance and leave because he sees a better chance to get one one SB shot. With that said, because we know agents know what is coming in on the table reguardless of what is publicly stated, Mike will publicly make make his decision known rather quickly is my guess.

Sign him or let him go. Dithering seems to be the hallmark of this organization. Other hallmarks: keeping prospects too long (see JTS and Braswell) and keeping Bowels.

I want Evans to play for an AFC contender so I have a good team to root for and the Bucs. It’ll make a 4-5 win season a lot more tolerable.
i.e Patriot fans rooting for the Bucs and TB12.

Bucs are not on the contender list I don’t even think bucs are on the top of Evans list will he hear them out absolutely but pretty sure he is gone not the end of the world the future really needs those snaps anyway.

Whatever happens, perhaps the greatest Buc ever

Well I’ve seen that Houston has been making a lot of moves. Hadn’t he considered them last year? Not sure about their cap situation but if they have the money we can probably say bye to Mike.

He wont leave us hanging

Houston is 13 million over the cap. They are paying WR Collins 28 mil and they just spent 2 draft picks on WRs. Plus they need OL help badly. They arent in play for Evans.
I think they teams to watch for IF Evans hits FA, are the Bills, Jags, and Panthers.

Ego thing? Its a business.. Evans knows ,hel l stick around for a bit till the bucs make a move. Its all about winning!

I personally don’t think the bills are going to be able to make the deal happen. They would benefit from signing a younger player who they can spread the contract out over a larger time frame.
Sure they could structure his contract as “a signing bonus” to keep off their cap for this year, but we’re talking about spreading that amount over what? 2 years, maybe 3?
Just don’t see it happening with younger receivers like Pierce on the market and with their holes on defense.

@Fan
Thanks for the update but now you made me even more nervous with saying the Jags might be in play. Still in Florida so no income tax and he knows that offense so no huge learning curve. 🤦🏿
