Crucial Game For Kyle Trask

August 16th, 2025

Tonight’s probably the biggest game of Kyle Trask’s professional career.

It’s kind of a wild statement for a fifth-year veteran, but the Bucs’ backup quarterback has never started in the NFL regular season and his only significant action was in a game the Bucs were tanking after clinching the NFC South crown for the 2022 season.

Trask may be battling for a roster spot as quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was signed last week and will see his first preseason action tonight in Pittsburgh.

Trask had a solid game against the Titans in the preseason opener and Gators fans know well that he’s a true competitor. And yes, Joe believes Trask is competing.

Bridgewater was signed for a reason. Joe believes the move was sparked by Trask looking shaky with the first-team offense in practice when Baker Mayfield sat out part of this summer’s training camp with a bruised hand.

Trask is expected to start tonight and will play behing the starting offensive line, minus Tristan Wirfs. A bad game for Trask will createa  massive opening for Bridgewater.

Joe hopes Trask can show he’s still the guy who threw 43 touchdowns in 12 games as a senior with the Gators in 2020.

Joe, could he be QB3, or cut him?

  2. Hawk Says:

This certainly is an important game for the Buccaneer’s roster. Everyone knows that the *backup* QB is the most important player on the team.

  3. SlyPirate Says:

QB2 vs QB3, does it really matter all that much? Even if Bridge is QB2, he is an extremely injury prone QB. They won’t count on Bridgewater’s health.

Trask knows the playbook and has rapport with the WR. He’s contract is $2.7M with $1.3M guaranteed. They’d save $1.4M. That’s nothing in the NFL.

    Trask is going nowhere.

  4. Letsbuccingo Says:

    Teddy is not that good.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Why should it matter…it’s a worthless game…

  6. Ben the GA Buc Says:

It matters for guys we wont see much of during the regular season.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

I absolutely do not think the Bucs brought in Bridgewater for the #2 spot, I think it was more about the guys behind Trask and the fact they had no business in the NFL. With the expanded practice squad with six veteran spots, I think Teddy was brought in for that role – and I’m sure they talked about it before he was signed – which the Bucs should do every year, use one of those spots for an emergency veteran QB (it wasn’t too long ago every carried 3 QBs on the roster). Of course Bridgewater, like just about any player, could have won a roster spot with a remarkable camp, but I haven’t really heard much from him.

  8. LakelandBuc Says:

Why did the Bucs make Kyle Trask the only QB, in their 50 year history to get a second contract?.

Why haven’t Licht signed a veteran Edge Rusher to replace David Walker.?

Why haven’t they signed a veteran ILB to spell Anthony Walker?

There’s so many question marks about this team
I’m not comfortable with the makeup of this roster

  9. James in Memphis Says:

Here you go again with this Kyle Trask crap. Kyle is not going anywhere. Is that what you really want? Teddy Bridgewater to be your backup QB? Why? What has he ever won? I like Teddy but he isn’t the caliber of player nor does he has the skill of Trask. Trask is going to be a good player in this league when his opportunity comes. Stop making smoke where there is none. Now Kancey on the other hand needs to elevate his game. 7 sacks a year isn’t enough. Jovon Haye did that.Talk about that. Talk about Logan Hall needing to elevate his game. Not Trask. Trask has done everything we have ever asked of him.

  10. James in Memphis Says:

Again Trask was a second round pick. Jason Licht would make himself look incredibly foolish removing Trask as the QB2. After all.. that is one of two positions that he has yet to figure out in the draft as good as he has been. QB and edge rushers have eluded his skill of drafting. Just being honest. So stop putting him on the back. He is the best drafter in franchise history but that isn’t saying much.

  11. Bojim Says:

    Go Kyle!

  12. Bee Says:

Lol….Who knew a worthless game meant so much Joseph.

Baker and Trask are the only QBs who know the offense and have worked with the offensive players. If Trask looked good in an actual game last week, why is his “job” in jeopardy?

Its funny, Baker can start camp off shaky throwing pick-6s and it’s cool. It’s just practice, no big deal. Trask is shaky with the starters for a few practices now his job is in danger. Make it make sense.

  13. James in Memphis Says:

    Win 12 games… Period….

  14. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Since Dr. Stroud has diagnosed Kyke as a “Gamer,” he should do well tonight right?

  15. LakelandBuc Says:

The Bucs has to see something in Kyle Trask

If they didn’t, they wouldn’t have re-signed him
The only QB in their history, to re-signed
None of this make any sense to me

And then they signed Teddy Bridgewater
    Without even working him out

  16. Obvious One Says:

It’s not a competition at this point. Unless Bridgewater turns into Dan Marino all the sudden. But that ain’t him….

  17. ModHairKen Says:

Joe, I readily admit that you are much more closely connected to this team than I am. In fact, if we did an on a percentage scale, you are probably between 50 and 80% and I am 0%.

So when you write this: “Trask may be battling for a roster spot as quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was signed last week and will see his first preseason action tonight in Pittsburgh,” I try to keep that in mind as I think to myself Traskhas been here for five years and has shown capability every time he’s in there.

Bridgewater has been here for three weeks. He was out of football all of last year. And that was after playing for what? Six or eight different teams? He does not have significant arm strength and he has a history of knee problems.

So I’m trying not to be disrespectful, but what do you know that we don’t?

  18. JimBobBuc Says:

The Bucs will have 3 QB’s on the roster so Trask will make the team. At the end of preseason Grizz and Todd will decide who’s QB2.

  19. FrontFour Says:

There’s a reason Teddy became a journeyman QB after the horrific injuries with the Vikings. And there’s a reason he’s spent the last year as a high school football coach. And there’s a reason the Bucs didn’t bring him in during OTA’s but late in the middle of training camp. Always liked the guy, but is he really much more than an extra arm.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Teddy Bridgewater will probably get injured and solve the problem for us.

I like Trask, and for me I prefer him to stay.

For Trask’s sake, I hope he gets another opportunity.

  21. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Trask is going nowhere.

  22. buc4evr Says:

Teddy is pretty brittle and doesn’t know the playbook. Trask stay #2 and Teddy is #3 or gets cut and goes to the practice squad.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    JimBobBuc Says
“The Bucs will have 3 QB’s on the roster so Trask will make the team.”

We don’t know if they will have three QBs. I agree they SHOULD, but they may not.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Honestly, I forgot this was Saturday and the Bucs are playing. I work pretty much 6 days a week (Fridays are spent with wife; that’s how I get away with constantly working). Retired life rocks! 😉

  25. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Joe believes the move was sparked by Trask looking shaky with the first-team offense in practice when Baker Mayfield sat out part of this summer’s training camp with a bruised hand.“

So it had nothing to do with Pratt being injured? Seems like a reach not even Mr.Fantastic could grasp

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I believe Teddy will make the team. He left a job to be here, and even though he was in trouble for stupid reasons, he still put himself on the line to be here. I don’t think he would have done that without some sort of promise being made.

  27. Mobucs Says:

OK. Baker lit up the Steelers defense in the combined practice. Pittsburgh is notoriously merciless with payback. Which quarterback do you want to see hurt on Saturday night? That’s why Baker’s on the bench. Your ball, Kyle or Teddy.

  28. Scotty Mack Says:

“We don’t know if they will have three QBs.”

NFL teams can now dress a third, emergency quarterback on game days without using a standard active roster spot.

  29. LouisFriend Says:

“Trask may be battling for a roster spot ”

    **************************

To whichever Joe wrote this, c’mon. Michael Pratt is gone and they needed a 3rd QB. Bridgewater is a highly qualified backup, but he’s not there to take over Trask’s roster spot.

  30. Todd Says:

Trask is here to stay and he will do well when called upon.

  31. buc4evr Says:

Does anyone know what is going on with JJ Roberts? Injury status?

  32. Baking with Grizz Says:

I don’t know but the Trask fan club sure seem to be walking on egg shells.
If you have trust on the guy, relax and enjoy the game. There is no need to defend him from a non situation. You Trask fans seem to want him to play but boy your vibes seem uncertain that he got this.

The Jameis crowd got silenced by Jameis. Let’s seem what Trask can do tonight with most of the 1st team.

I don’t care who is QB2. We just need for him to win a few games if Baker goes down.

Good luck to both oof them.
    Go Bucs!!!!!

  33. Defense Rules Says:

Scotty Mack … ‘NFL teams can now dress a third, emergency quarterback on game days without using a standard active roster spot.’

There’s a caveat on that Scotty that says the emergency (3rd) QB still counts against the team’s 53-man roster but not against the 46-men who dress for the game. In yet another caveat to the 46-man rule, teams can now dress an additional player IF 8 of the players dressed are OLinemen. So we could theoretically dress as many as 48 players, but they all still have to be on the 53-man roster. Weird huh.

Signing Teddy Bridgewater makes a ton of sense to me (and yes, I’m convinced that either Teddy or Kyle will dress for each game as the 3rd emergency QB). The Bucs have confidence in Kyle, BUT … he is an unproven commodity in terms of games won/lost, so they’re covering their bets. We’re shooting for a Super Bowl, and Teddy gives us just a tad more insurance, for relatively little money more than likely. He’s very similar to Baker in terms of accuracy (66.4% career completion percentage is outstanding, and a ton of it has been short/intermediate passes … much like Baker?). If Baker goes down and Kyle goes in, he’ll be on a very short leash.

  34. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

    ^^^
This whole post is made to sound like a competition between Bridgewater & Trask, when it’s really us shuffling the deck and not wanting to count on Bazelak.

Trask & Bridewater > Trask & Bazelak behind Baker. It’s that simple

  35. Buddha Says:

Fiction not fact. Come on Joe. No way is this a test of anything.

  36. BayouBullet Says:

Kyle Trask NFL career stats are 4 out of 11 for 28 yards 0 yds

How he isn’t in Canton is a total mystery

  37. BayouBullet Says:

    0 tds… Damn spell check

  38. RustyRhinos Says:

LOL!!! T. Bridgewater, is not as good as he once was, and he was not all that good then either… 33 wins 32 losses, 0 Dash 2 in playoff games. Nine seasons in the NFL and Teddy only played in every game 1 season, either as QB1 or QB2…

Yes, Bridgewater is a veteran QB. One who has not played in any NFL games since the 2022 season in Miami, when he last played in an NFL game. Good QB3. Good QB in 2025 Buc QB room Yes.

Trask does have his chance this season with the pre-season games he plays in. I just do not understand all the negativity for Trask. My hope is he plays like a Champion, and we win.

    GO!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  39. Hodad Says:

Teddy has a pop gun for an arm, and can’t run to save his life. He’s had the play book for a week, and hasn’t had any time to work with the starting offense. This is Joe stirring the pot, nothing more. If the Bucs really thought Teddy was a better option they would’ve signed him in the offseason instead of Trask. End of a non story.

  40. Larrd Says:

Balderdash! They’ll keep three or stow away Teddy somewhere.

  41. Alexander Lara Says:

Why didn’t the Glazer offer Tom Brady 10% of the Buccaneers ownership Tom as well love in Tampa. It would’ve been a great fit. Plus he won a Super Bowl here. I would like to know.

  42. infomeplease Says:

It’s “put up or shut up” time for Trask! Produce or get cut loose! Rise to the opportunity or fall to the floor. We’ll see how that goes!

  43. infomeplease Says:

It Trask has a crappy game he won’t be cut. But he may drop to #3 QB around game 1 of the season… depending how well TB plays during this time.

  44. Oneilbuc Says:

Alexander. Brady haven’t mentioned the bucs since he retired I really wish you guys would just move on from him. He’s not a buc and he’s had shown y’all that the past 2 years. Brady had already said he’s a Patriot for life and they just built him a 12 foot statue in New England give it up he don’t want to be apart of this organization that’s why it would be a stupid and desperate to put him in the ring of honor.

  45. Oneilbuc Says:

I guess the Joe’s didn’t like what I said about moving on from Brady lol 🤣🤣 . Because they have been begging for Brady to acknowledge the bucs and he refused lol 🤣🤣.

  46. Jmarkbuc Says:

    JJ Roberts to IR….

  47. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Scotty Mack Says:
“NFL teams can now dress a third, emergency quarterback on game days without using a standard active roster spot.”

    I didn’t realize this.

  48. Rod Munch Says:

Again, it’s not about keeping 3 QBs on the active roster, it’s about being able to have veterans on the practice squad. I assume Teddy and the Bucs already have worked out that he’ll be one of the practice squad players – unless he flat out beat Trask for the backup job, and I haven’t even heard whispers about that happening.

Bridgewater, as the practice squad QB, makes a ton of sense. No one is rushing out to sign him to their active roster, if they wanted him, he was available and the best job offer he got was from the Bucs. I don’t know what exactly happened with Pratt, but he fell out of favor. Ballsack meanwhile, I don’t think he’s a legit NFL prospect, he’s just way too inaccurate, which shows up on his college tape – but if they wanted to keep him around it surely isn’t on the active roster, and if something happened to Baker, and all you had was Trask and Ballsack, that would be truly scary. So bring in Bridgewater, let him learn the system, earn some easy money on the practice squad while he can adjust to almost being a player-coach as he moves on to do more coaching.

  49. LakelandBuc Says:

    I’m pulling for Trask,

But Trask made a huge mistake by re-signing with the Bucs
They continue to disrespect him, and will not stop

At some point, he gotta man up, and say enough
And move on from the Bucs

  50. Tavvy Says:

@ Lakeland, move on to WHERE!
    HOME????

  51. LouisFriend Says:

    Tavvy Says:

@ Lakeland, move on to WHERE!
    HOME????

    ***************************
The NFL is a league starving for QB’s. Half the teams have a QB they’d dump in a heartbeat for a better option. Love him or hate him, Trask would have a job as a backup somewhere.

  52. HC Grover Says:

I doubt the Bucs are stupid enough to let Trask get away and win a Super Bowl for another team in favor of Bridgewater. But they have done it before.

  53. buc4evr Says:

@jmarkbuc, thanks. not good , thought he could help the secondary. Hope Shilo balls out tonight !

  54. KT Says:

    > Bridgewater was signed for a reason. Joe believes the move was sparked by Trask looking shaky with the first-team offense in practice when Baker Mayfield sat out part of this summer’s training camp with a bruised hand.

You are just making up stuff now.

  55. Couch Fan Says:

Super Todd handed the starting job to Mayfield so its not crazy to think he’ll hand the back up job to “his guy” as well.

  56. Scott Says:

Let the best QB win. Trask seems to do rise to the occasion. I think he will be fine.

  57. Dewey Selmon Says:

The Bucs did Bridewater a solid by signing him as camp meat and letting him get back into football shape. He will be put on the practice sqaud and if someone signs him (which i doubt) then he is gone.

  58. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

How is signing Trask to a second contract (only Bucs QB ever to get that) being disrespectful? Please explain how, when, where, the Bucs have ever disrespected Trask? Be specific. Because he didn’t beat out Baker? Because he didn’t beat out Brady? Exactly where is the disrespect?

  59. Scott Says:

We definitely need 3 good qbs on roster

  60. Robbie lyon Says:

Todd Bowls is a snake in the grass so if Teddy is the backup QB wants he will get it right or wrong. Hey did we just work out somebody’s son as a favor and now that kid has a roster spot?

  61. Scott Says:

I believe the third can be inactive and still be put in as an emergency QB as long as they are on the 53

  62. TBBucFan Says:

Don’t think a backup qb can be on a short leash. I believe an emergency qb can only come in if all other qbs are hurt and can’t play.
    Baker – 1 Trask – 2 Teddy – 3 when the season starts.

  63. Rod Munch Says:

Keyshawn Vaughn getting big time playing minutes with the game on the line in the SF @ Vegas game.

  64. Rod Munch Says:

Vegas with 30 seconds left, have the ball, game tied – their last two preseason games have ended in a tie, so this could be three ties in a row. Unbelievable odds if you bet that.

  65. Rod Munch Says:

And Vegas throws an INT at their own 40 with like 13 seconds left. Ouch.

  66. Rod Munch Says:

And that’s why you don’t bet on games kids – Vegas manages to lose the game on a 59FG bringing their tie streak to an end.

  67. Don'tBmad Says:

Said if for 3 years now ….trade bait. He ain’t it

  68. Les opyd Says:

AGAIN ,HE DID NOT PLAY WITH THE SAME LINE AS TEDDY . WE WONT KNOW REALLY TILL HE PLSYS WITH STARTERS !

  69. DrunkInYbor Says:

I don’t give a spit what line he played with. He sucked and he looked scared. Trade him to Pittsburgh for a 7th rounder. He’s just rattled too easily.

  70. DrunkInYbor Says:

There’s plenty room for another drunk. Welcome!!

  71. Dr. Says:

I remain a fan of Trask, but he’s not shown the growth and consistency one would expect at this stage. Bridgewater proved he’s a dependable backup after just one week in the offense, and Bazelak seems to have functional potential. Trask’s abysmal numbers against the Steelers —3/11 for 19 yards — don’t cut it; the only upside is that he didn’t fumble again this week. We know Trask is a relatively slow learner of offenses, and this likely contributed to his staying with the Bucs, but he may have just one week to prove he’s worth keeping on the roster

  72. Robert Says:

Funny how everyone is downplaying Teddy Bridgewater’s play saying it is a nothing game but the same fans were ready to annoint Shedeur Sanders as the second coming of Tom Brady after last week. Get real. Kyle Trask looked horrible. He will never be a starter not even in the XFL.
