Bruce Arians Was Right: Turnovers Would Change The Game

November 1st, 2021

Turnovers tell the tale.

When Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians spoke last before the traveling to New Orleans, he noted how turnovers always change games with the slimy Saints.

“The games with them usually turn on turnovers,” Arians said Friday. “[They] decide it. We’ve got to do a great job of protecting the ball with them and taking it away.”

Arians was dead-on correct and the Bucs did a s(p)itty job of that early on. Turnovers in the second quarter led to 10 points by the slimy Saints that put the Bucs in a hole.

Then, when the Bucs most needed to move the football with 1:36 left in the game trailing by one, Tom Brady throws a killer pick-six.

Ballgame.

The slimy Saints’ hex on Brady in regular season games continues. Brady, as the Bucs’ starting quarterback, now has eight turnovers (including a fumble) in three regular season games against New Orleans.

Arians said of the throw to Chris Godwin on the pick-six that Brady “telegraphed it a little” but gave major props to slimy Saints corner P.J. Williams for making a play on the ball.

Brady said he had Mike Evans wide open on the play but made the wrong throw.

Basically, Sunday was a flashback of 2019 when Arians used to say, “Bucs beating Bucs.”

Defense has to get off the field when the Bucs took a lead. Two chances and they couldn’t do it. Cockrell blows.

We beat ourselves yesterday, plain and simple.

Thankfully the frequency of Bucs beating Bucs changed significantly in 2020 and in 2021 compared to the previous five seasons. The team is currently 6-2. I’ll take it. After all, was anyone seriously thinking the Bucs were going 16-1 for the season?

The Bucs will lose at least one more game, maybe two. We’re good, and better than we’ve been in a very long time.

The call was correct, White’s horse collar tackle was a legit call sorry to say.

No player shall grab the inside collar of the back or the side of the shoulder pads or jersey, or grab the jersey at the name plate or above, and pull the runner toward the ground. This does not apply to a runner who is in the tackle box or to a quarterback who is in the pocket.

I am still not sure what Gio’s roll us. Lenny is a so so receiving back at best and Gio has shown great promise, get him in the game. Whole different offense with AB & Gronk. Godwin balled out yesterday.

Still not hitting on all cylinders, consistent theme

Interesting discussion by Albert Breer on TV this morning. The Saints may end up making a few phone calls to Drew Brees, Phillip Rivers, and maybe Deshaun Watson. Breer’s point is that the Saints are a strong team and have been knocking on the door to a Super Bowl for quite some time. Their window is just as open as the Bucs so if there’s an opportunity to improve at the QB position they’ll do it.

  9. Bosch Says:

Bucs beating Bucs. With the officiating crew piling on.

  10. PSL Bob Says:

Exactly what I was thinking. Bucs beating Bucs. Some stupid penalties, some deserved, others questionable, and turnovers, particularly the last interception killed us. But even spotting the Saints 10 points off earlier turnovers, we still had a legit chance to win. We’ve become accustomed to Brady leading the team to victory in the final minutes of the game. And then he threw that fatal interception. The Saints still own us during the regular season. We better damn well turn the tide we they come to visit us at the Licht House.

  11. Beeej Says:

There are other QB is in the concussion protocol, he’ll be back soon

  12. Ed Says:

I thought the stupid defensive penalties were more costly than the turnovers since Saints kicked field goals. But the White taunting and the off sides 3rd and 5 were killers at exactly the wrong time of game.

Give credit to the Bucs defense for swarming Kamara the entire game.

Give thumbs down to Ross Cockrell for holding on a play that Semien had no chance of completing. Give thumbs down to allowing Desir to have to play one-on-one with the outside receivers. Those were one-read plays for the QB, look to your right, see #29 and chuck it as he is either playing 10 yards off the ball or not seeing where the ball is. He should not be on the field, his area of the field was where all the big plays the Saints made in second half.

  13. PassingThru Says:

Turnovers mattered as did the penalties. But what dictated the course of the game were the penalties, which are what placed the Bucs into position where that last turnover killed the team.

I keep reading about Arians ragging on the team again and again on penalties, but they continue. That’s the sign of ineffectual coaching. Whatever Arians and his gargantuan staff are doing, it isn’t working. And continuing to yap about it hasn’t done a damn thing.

You might pick up an extra penalty or two being the road team, but 99 yards of penalties sealed the deal. It caused a game-changing interception to be called back, it killed offensive drives and even breathed life into stalled New Orleans drives. This isn’t a ref problem, this is a coaching problem.

I hope Bradys not losing his Mojo the last two weeks he has not looked very sharp. If so this could be his last year if that doesn’t change.

  15. firethecannons Says:

He threw 4 touchdowns, Saints defense is way better than ours. Do not put this on TB12-he brought us back to being ahead–defense lost this game.

  16. firethecannons Says:

there was NO reason not to draft multiple good corners, we do not need kyle trask and we never will

  17. Jmarkbuc Says:

Maybe those back to back turnovers in the first half had something to do with it?

TB don’t look right… holding the ball to long, forcing throws, missing throws. I hate it but somethings up with him.

  18. Ed Says:

Yes, I agree, Brady seems off. His last 3 ints have been horrible throws into double coverage. Normally his ints are at least “understandable”, tips, defender jumps the route, just an inaccurate throw, etc. The last few have just been obvious bad throws that clearly should have not happened. Maybe he is just pressing because Gronk and AB are out and he knows they have to score a lot because the defense is struggling. Having a good consistent running game would also help.

  19. Listnfrmafar Says:

Brady threw for 4 tds and 38 points last week. Why does he have to be the only QB in the NFL that has to score 30 points to win. He leads in TD passes and passing yards. WTF, what do you want? Who would you want in his place? Mathew Stafford?

  20. Allbuccedup Says:

Ed agree Gronk and Brown are his go to receivers. With those two out they can double down on Evans or Godwin. Of course they did not do a good job on Chris. Bucs need to get another tight end next year to backup Gronk or replace him if he goes. Howard or Brate are not the answer.
