Bucs Beating Bucs — No, Really

November 1st, 2021

Defense didn’t get the job done.

Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians coined the phrase early in the 2019 season, his first Tampa Bay campaign.

Arians used the phrase “Bucs beating Bucs” to describe how the team always seemed to shoot itself in the foot. A rash of penalties, a pick, a fumble, you name it. It was always something that started in-between the ears that led to losses.

That’s came true again yesterday when three Tom Brady turnovers — three Tom Brady turnovers!!!??? — led to 16 points in a 36-27 loss to the slimy Saints.

In his analysis of Sunday’s games, Pro Football Hall of Fame voter Clark Judge of SI.com can see what we’ve seen — and last saw with regularity in 2019.

Tom Brady separates Tampa Bay from the field. But so do defense and penalties. Not enough of one and too many of the other.

Joe certainly hopes Joe never to see the Bucs defense get embarrassed like they did against a fourth-string neverbeen from Northwestern yesterday.

Just a shameful, shameful effort by the defense all around.

A week after the Bucs had forced the Bears into six turnovers, the Bucs couldn’t have found a way to get one (that counted)?

Brady looked off from the beginning of the game IMO

  2. Robert Says:

TB was off a bit………dang I miss AB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Halloween in New Orleans? Voodoo…..not to mention the Bucs have lost how many straight regular season games to the Saints?

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

All I can say is that I almost feel sorry for the WTF………we will have 2 weeks to work up a hunger for a decisive victory…..

If Jameis is out for any extended period Simien won’t be able to beat some of the teams on their schedule…..ATL, Titans, Bills, Cowboys..

  5. Robert Says:

JW will be back soon enough. looked like he sprained his ankle a bit.

  6. Medicated Pete Says:

The 2 point conversion play call was a joke & Mike Evans made ZERO attempt to block his man. It’s time to trade him before the deadline

  7. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

Joe- you keep going off on the defense. We haven’t played anyone with an offensive line since the rams or an offense for that matter. Bowles has done a great job of hiding our secondary until we run into a real offensive line. For crying out loud, Jacoby Brissett passed on us like we didn’t exist. There is no secondary. Bowles has been pulling out of his blitz packages recently to supplement the secondary. With NO having that offensive line, our secondary is going to be exposed or they are going to run for 300 yards. Pick your poison.

  8. Robert Says:

@ Pete…….yeah, everyone hate me for busting on ME. He missed the crucial pass at the end of the game as well. then had the dumb look on his face….like what happened. Dude can not be counted on for routes.

  9. deuceswild78 Says:

when is devin white going to let himself out of his stable… he is just a guy right now. the DL has been good enough just not getting home enough

  10. Lifer Says:

I think you can start to see the lack of mental toughness on defense come through in games like this. As “Thisisouryear” said, the offensive line of the Saints played well and they just kept moving the ball. Devin White hit in the head on a sack is a frustration penalty, that cost points. Same with Gholston who had a late hit that wiped away Winfield pick in the end zone, that cost points. When you hand leadership in the locker room to young guys, you will get energy, but you will also lose some composure. Need David and Suh to bring that savvy veteran mentality back. Alas, it’s only a mid-season game. Let’s hope adjustments (mental and physical) are made in the coming weeks. R-E-L-A-X. We are still elite and the team to beat.

  11. Cobraboy Says:

Peyton says Winston has a “significant” ACL. Did that change? Just an ankle?

  12. Cobraboy Says:

I am incredibly disappointed in Devin White’s play.

    I’m glad I didn’t spring for a White jersey.

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

LMAO at all of you. Seriously, Just how long did you really think we would go with our Defense? I’m actually surprised we are 6-2. Th Saints have our number. Now, we can get them back when they come to Tampa. Unknown QB’s always spell doom for our Bucs. This Bye comes at a great time. Week 10 is when the real ball..the real teams start steppin up. Brady is mortal and will not win against top notch defenses. Get healthy and come back swinging hard. Every team is giving us their best shot. It will be double hard to repeat as champs. We shall see.

  14. Admiral Redbeard Says:

It’s 1 game, time to move on. Next up, the WFT. Let’s Go Brandon!

  15. Steven007 Says:

Robert, I think I’ll trust TB on that one. He said himself that Evans was open and he should have went there. Admiral, friendly suggestion. Keep your silly toxic politics out of a football blog in a football post. Seriously. Plenty of other appropriate places for your sixth grade coded messages.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Hard to blame this game on any one player….but I think Anthony Nelson’s neutral zone infraction is at the top of the list…..

  17. Robert Says:

our speaking of a diff play steven. I am talking the series before when they had time to score and he threw to ME, but ME did not cut in on the route because he knew he would take a hit. The one you are referring to is when the game was already over and TB probably only passed on ME and went to CG because…..well that’s what TB does…. you drop on him he moves to the next guy for a while.

  18. 163doubleplay Says:

This is a good loss for the BUcs. THey think they can just cruise along winning games. It gives them a wake up call and they have a lot of improvement to work on especially when it relates to being DISCIPLINE.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Seems like a lot of Bucs’ fans & media have an inflated opinion of just how good we really are as a TEAM. You are what your record says you are: 6-2. We lost to 2 solid teams with solid Top-10 defenses: Rams (7-1) and Saints (5-2). The only team with a winning record that we’ve beat this season is the Cowboys (6-1) … and it took a Brady comeback inside the final 2 minutes to beat them.

Bucs are, by design, an offensive-focused team. That’s where we’ve put our money … into our offense. The preponderance of our depth is in our offense. The defense was on shaky ground personnel-wise to start the season, and that’s only gotten worse as the injuries have impacted this defense since Game 1. At various times we’ve lost JPP, LVD, Davis, Dean, SMB, Winfield, Whitehead … the list goes on.

Bucs have a realistic chance to go someplace between 14-3 and 12-5 this season. That’s not good enough more than likely to get us a 1st Rnd BYE, but it might be good enough to give us a home field advantage for at least 1 of the playoff games. Maybe more. I doubt we’ll be making any trades by tomorrow, so ‘what you see is what you get’. Whining doesn’t help. Time to heal up, put on our big-boy pants, and kiss some ass.

  20. SB Says:

ANY of you that want to get rid of ME should stick to your professional crocheting background.
    Flippin’ Idiots!

  21. SB Says:

    Really????? Joe????
    That comment went into moderation???

  22. Steven007 Says:

Robert, I stand corrected. Clearly thought you were talking about the last play.

  23. alton d green Says:

I think we are stuck with the secondary that we now have but dear Lord PLEASE hit those receivers!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why does this Country Boy have to tell Bowles something so damn obvious. I didn’t get the game but i watched espn’s gamecast. When NO got the ball near the end to take the lead, i knew it was over. Why would i know this. DUH!! this is what gamecast said the whole freak’n game. Seimian left, siemian right, seimiam left blah blah blah. Why would they EVER want to throw downfield?????????? If the QB can throw the ball 3-10 yards on every play, BINGO 300 yards. Lord knows Todd will just stand there like he’s worried about not getting any Christmas presents. Or maybe a toothache

  24. 163doubleplay Says:

Even the return of Bunting and Davis will not make any difference. Both played during the Cowboys game and Prescott who has not played for a year and pre season lighted the secondary up. This issue is on Todd Bowles’ vanilla type defense and no imagination on how to create a new scheme.

  25. alton d green Says:

163, you nailed it man!!!!!!! If they continue giving 7-10 yards on every frick’n play, it doesn’t matter. Might as well have Slingblade playing corner. Let me give you all a reality check; Siemian only completed 55% of his passes. what if it was 75% slaughter!!

  26. alton d green Says:

Tompa completed 70% but those int’s and fumble killed us. And 99 yds in penalties!!!!!!!! there was AT LEAST 2 drives that were killed because of penalties. One writer said that the roughing the passer call was questionable. HUH? What the Hell was questionable about it? The only thing he didn’t do was hit Hill with a ball bat. Stop your whining and fix the discipline problem

  27. Mike Says:

We absolutely lost that game due to dumb @ss penalties by the Defense. Just really dumb stuff man. They better learn from this game and stop letting the Bucs beat the Bucs.

  28. ClwJB Says:

No AB & Gronk made a HUGE difference on O

Cockrell and Desir just got roasted repeatedly

Oh, and the refs….they only saw red jersey penalties yesterday

But…who cares, we lost both games to them last year and still carried home the trophy

    It’s a new Bucs life 🙂

  29. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

When they can play a complete game against a good team then they’ll start winning. When your qb throws 4 tds inspite of the tos this loss rests on the shoulders of the defense. NO scored only 13 points with these same players last week but 29 this week? Settling for that punt with the game so close was ridiculous. We throw 40 yard bombs on 1st & 2nd but don’t have a play where multiple routes can get open on 3rd and 14??? Get out of here with that garbage. No Riskit turned into just that, We no Riskit we got no niskit. Total tail tuck!

  30. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

They turn into We’ll Just Kickit too many times.

  31. Cainishere Says:

We are missing our speed on the outside

  32. Listnfrmafar Says:

With Gronk out we have no TE to throw to, don’t know what happened to Brate this year but clearly he and Brady are not on the same page. Johnson did ok but offense is now left with Godwin and Evans and I can’t believe how much he struggles to run tight routes and lacks the ability to connect with Brady on broken plays. Godwin, Gronk, AB and even Johnson get it. Where the heck is Gio???

  33. Hondo Says:

I’ve been a patriots fan since they were the Boston Patriots. I’m a Brady fan therefore a Bucs fan. In my twenty plus years Brady/Belichick with Bill’s leadership i never once watched a Patriots team that wasn’t prepared to play and play with discipline. Sunday’s game was shameful, the team on both sides of the ball WAS NOT PREPARED to play Sean Payton’s team. The D has no discipline hence all the penalties. This isn’t the first time I noticed this. Good coaches will always out coach Arians and Bowles. Both are way over rated. But the team has talent and will continue to win in spite of the coaching.
