“He Doesn’t Ever Worry About Being A Pig”

March 14th, 2021

Not Tom Brady.

A man who once had to negotiate contracts with the current Bucs starting quarterback shared very interesting insight.

Basically, park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing Bucs Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady is not offsides-jumping, Lightning-trolling, belly-shirt-wearing, practice-hating, kicker-heckling, tree-grinding , non-contact-football-loving, chicken-wings-grilling, playing-time-squawking, TV-cooking-star, half-sack Swaggy Baker.

That comes from former Belicheats general manager Scott Pioli.

Brady truly believes the Bucs have what it takes to make another run at a Super Bowl. Why does Brady know this? Because, Pioli said, that’s why Brady redid his contract last week.

Pioli appeared on CBS Sports HQ to discuss Brady’s move to help the Bucs clear cap space. And Pioli has seen that before first-hand when he negotiated Brady’s contracts with the Belicheats.

“His deal is about winning and winning championships,” Pioli said. “Does he like to get paid like everybody else? Sure he does. But he doesn’t ever worry about being a pig. To him, winning championships is just as important as getting paid.”

Pioli said he remembers Brady actually confronting Pioli in contract negotiations offering to take a lesser deal so long as Pioli and Bill Belicheat promised to use that savings to get and/or keep other talented players.

“He consistently did that over time,” Pioli said of Brady. “But he was never a pig coming to the table.”

Pioli also believes the Bucs are in a good position to make another run. The first thing is, he said, Bucs coach Super Bowl-winning Bucco Bruce Arians has to convince the team last year is over and has nothing to do with this year. The other is the Bucs have had mostly good luck with injuries. That must continue.

“Everybody is going to talk about how good this is for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” Pioli said. “But to me, this is truly good for the National Football League. Because Brady is definitely one of the people in the league that really helps the National Football League for so many reasons, love him or hate him.”

If the Bucs are able to retain Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett, Joe doesn’t know of another team as loaded as the Bucs.

We will soon learn where Shaq’s priorities lie.

  2. Bird Says:

Someone keeps posting that he is just lucky and he wins 7 super bowls cause of his defense ?

    😂

You dont think that team friendly qb deals help filled the cupboards with his generosity …on both sides of the ball…
And he is about to do it again with this deal. I have a good feeling shaq will be signing shortly.

Look at the last winners in the superbowls over the last decade. It was brady or teams where qb was on first contract (cheaper). Mahommes did make it to this super bowl but won his last off rookie deal. You have to go all the way back to eli and giants to find a qb making top dollar.

  3. Bird Says:

If they are able to sign shaq..rheir onoy weakness is receiving running back and return guy. How awesome is that?

Shaq is final big piece wherein the rest will fall into place on the cheap

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So….what’s the fair amount for Shaq to turn down from the Bucs?……can anybody put a figure to it?

I suspect that it’s near $5mil per year….so if Shaq is offered $17 & someone else is at 22……who could fault him.

If this were his second big contract things would be different….but this is essentially his NFL payday.

  5. Hodad Says:

I’ve given Licht my share of grief, but he found a good one in Shaq. Key word, found. Sometimes that’s what you have to do. That’s what Licht, and his staff get paid for, finding Shaqs. All’s not lost if Shaq goes somewhere else for more money. There’s the draft, and other F.A.’s out there. Maybe Licht will go all in on Shaq breaking the bank, or he has the next Shaq in his sights. Ding, ding, the dinner bell will be ringing soon.

To over simplify Brady’s outlook all u have to do is listen to Brady talk. He’s a we guy. He’s always talking about what we can do or what we need to improve or we need to execute. Every one of us has an I guy that they know somewhere . So it’s easy to compare the difference. You can tell that he gets great joy out of seeing teammates succeed.

  10. Brandon Jeff Says:

    @TBBF.
I think you nailed it and that is pretty much what I was thinking. 17mil is probably the upper end of what we can offer and in the neighborhood of 5mil more is what it would take to sway him.

  12. Irishmist Says:

Brady has been playing for over 20 years, has a lucrative side business, unlimited endorsement opportunities and a rich wife. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate that he is willing to take a little less, but let’s not pretend he is Mother Theresa. He is just smart enough to take the long view. But positional players like Shaq don’t have the luxury of taking the long view. Their window of opportunity is a lot more limited, and I can’t blame them for getting what they can, while they can. If someone is willing to give Shaq over 20 million guaranteed and we can only afford 17, then he should go for it. And I would rather have Floyd or Reddick at 15 and keep Suh, the Shaq at 20 and lose him.

  13. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Irishmist, you missed the part that he has been doing this his whole career. And why do people keep bringing up what Gisele makes. Just because you have a successful wife doesn’t mean you have to be a stay at home dad. Why can’t they both be successful? There are.numerous professional athletes with investments that make more than Brady and VERY few sacrifice their wealth for the better of the team. That is the DIFFERENCE, it’s not the total amount of $$$.

  14. mark2001 Says:

That is freaking Arnold Ziffel, isn’t it?

  15. pert Says:

Shaq will probably make more money in Tampa even if he takes a lesser deal. If he gets a 17 mil/year offer from the Bucs, Licht will almost certainly let him finish the entire 4 year contract. But lets say he gets 22 mil/year from the Jets and only nets 4-5 sacks in year one. They’re probably going to let him go after 2 or 3 years.

    17 * 4 = 68; 22 * 3 = 66. Clearly a better deal in a friendly system like Tampa.

  16. Buczilla Says:

We are lucky as f to have Brady.

  17. Joe in Michigan Says:

Bird: Yes, the “Brady is just lucky” posts are comical. Another posted that the Bucs only got a defense after Brady arrived, although there were 9 of 11 defensive starters that returned from 2019 (10, if you count that VH3 was cut, and Dean/SMB replaced him). Antoine Winfield Jr. is good, don’t get me wrong, but it was more than just him that turned the Bucs around.

  18. Oneilbuc Says:

Irishmist I agree with you bro I’m tired of hearing about Brady taking discounts . When you have a wife that makes what she makes then you can take pay cuts. But all this loyalty talk to a team is just crazy. Where is GMC , Bennett , Blunt, and others they moved on from them . So to Shaq go get your money bro because as soon as he turns 31 yall will be saying move on from him and I probably would be saying the same thing . This ain’t about loyalty remember it’s a business just like these teams tell these players . So get your money bro !!!

  19. Joe in Michigan Says:

Oneilbuc: Shaq got his money, and it’s from the Bucs.
