Report: Bucs “Hot” For Teddy

March 2nd, 2020

What a coincidence!

This morning Joe wrote about Rondé Barber gushing over Teddy Bridgewater, and now a new report claims the Bucs are hot for the 27-year-old Saints backup and former Vikings Pro Bowler.

Pro Football Hall of Fame voter and The Athletic writer Mike Sando penned a column behind his company’s pay wall that featured quotes from sources he talked to last week at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“I am hearing Tampa Bay is hot on Bridgewater,” a GM said.

“That would leave Winston on the outside for Tampa Bay, and possibly elsewhere. How many teams in a buyer’s market will offer a starting job to a player known for making poor decisions on and off the field?  … …

“The only way you can put Winston behind somebody (as a backup) is if the starter is an old guy who is completely established and has one or two years left,” an evaluator said.

Which coach might think he could fix Winston?

“Sean Payton,” the evaluator replied. “New Orleans wants to keep Taysom as their gadget guy. To do that, they need a No. 2. They can sell it by saying Brees has one year left, so just spend a year with Sean and become the starter in 2021.”

Joe could totally see Bucco Bruce Arians offering Bridgewater a three-year contract. Sadly, that might mean the Bucs’ deep-ball prowess would near extinction, while ball-security would improve to what it was during the Mike Glennon era.

  1. Tbbucs3 Says:

Let’s just let Jason Licht run this franchise into the ground even further.

  2. CPN Says:

I’m content with Bridgewater. I’d rather have Dalton, but anybody will do over America’s QB for the time being.

  3. Tampabuscsbro Says:

you know after last year I am starting to think deep passes are overrated. anyhow this would be great for the bucs. Also Bridgewater will have Evans and Godwin. how in gods name would that limit any QB that would be here. oh also don’t forget Joe. Mike Evans rookie year he still had over a thousand yards with Josh Mcown and Mike Glennon throwing to him.

  4. Ed Says:

Nothing sad about ending losing. Jameis will live to play in the future for a team that has an older quarterback. The Bucs desperately need to start winning and adding a smarter QB that will play under control will give the team a sense of stability instead of the streakiness of Jameis.

  5. NutterBuccer Says:

Mike Glennon era? Come on Joe, Teddy is capable of 4,000 yards passing and 25-30 TDs and 10-12 ints. Seems like you’re reading things that aren’t written here. –Joe Which in result would get this team to the playoffs. Im a winston fan but after 5 years and the constsnt turnovers and bobeheaded moves its ok to move on. Maybe we will have a QB who can hit Godwin in stride on a slant route not 3 yards behind him, thus we wont need to throw 30 yard passes every ither play.

  6. Dreghost Says:

Please o please football Gods grant this wish for us, butttt not without a run game and possibly a top 5 Defense lol is that too much to ask for? O well…Go Bucs

  7. BrianBucs Says:

    Joe

Teddy’s deep and intermediate throws are much better than you keep giving him credit for.
Plus, he throws them to his own team

  8. Robert James Says:

If I really want Teddy but don’t like Jameis because of his play… am I racist?

  9. TexBuc Says:

teddy Bridgewater 6 years NFL Stat

    44 games, 65.2% comp, 7652 yds, 38 TD, 25 Int, 10 Fumbles lost = 35 Turnover

J Winston 5 years NFL Stat

    72 games, 61.3% comp, 19737 yds, 121 TD, 88 int, 31 fumbles lost = 119 turnover

  10. Tbbucs3 Says:

Teddy Bridewater has never thrown for more than 14 TDs in a season…..

And some people actually want him as QB. It’s Laughable.

  11. Buc50 Says:

I believe the Bucs are better with less deep throws and although I’m not a huge Bridgewater fan, he forces Bruce to dial it back.

  12. Bucsfan951 Says:

If Winston goes to NOLA, bucs will be spotted 7.5 points every time they play them 🤷🏻‍♂️

  13. TexBuc Says:

Some QBs CANNOT keep a offense moving without a running game, and I believe Teddy falls into this category.

    No Thanks

  14. Buczilla Says:

Oh gosh, say it isn’t so. If Arians thinks Teddy gives us the best chance to win, I have got to trust him, but I’m greasing up the plank in case it doesn’t work out. I think that getting Bridgewater is a bad idea (I’ve disparaged the poor guy enough in previous posts) and I’ll leave it at that.

  15. tnikkichristy@gmail.com Says:

I’ve been sensing this all along.

  16. Tbbucs3 Says:

I must of forgot most Bucs fans think the single most important thing to do at Quarterback is simply not throwing interceptions……

Sure Teddy will throw VERY few INTs….but Mr. 14 Tds production is crap.

  17. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

I think we are close w the run game. I like dalton-Bridgewater-Carr in that order. I think Bruce knows what he is doing. Go Bucs!!

  18. #1 Pick QB 2 Cent Brain Says:

What would be so bad about protecting the ball and not beating yourself?

  19. Tbbucs3 Says:

    #1 Pick

    See Mitchell Trubisky

  20. tnikkichristy@gmail.com Says:

Been sensing this for awhile. Arians’ offense is a hybrid one and this whole vertical notion is overstated. The key is getting the ball into your playmakers’ hands without turning it over and Bridgewater can do that well. I do believe they’ll either draft a stud back or pick up a decent 3 down back in FA.

  21. Bobby M. Says:

Bucs aren’t talking….I think the report is bogus. After losing Favre at last minute, I can’t see them showing anything unless it’s meant to be a misdirection.

  22. Tbbucs3 Says:

Teddy is total bait from a 5 game sample size. He would flop just like Foles did with Jacksonville.

  23. TexBuc Says:

    Bucs50

BA’s offense is CALLED 4 Vertical Offense – which is a play action long ball passing offense in other words “no risk it, no biscuit.”

  24. Bird Says:

No question which one wrote this article

    Definitely not logical joe
The amazing meltdowns we are seeing here from grown men are hilarious
    😂

  25. Losing hope Says:

I’d LOOOOVE Teddy over jaymiss. Bring it on!

  26. TexBuc Says:

We the Bucs have been left at the altar by big names more than most teams i.e.
Bill Parcels (twice), Brett Favre, Chip Kelly, and probably a few that have never been announced.

Hope we don’t Winston to another team while we flirt with another QB especially to the Saints.

  27. Jean Lafitte Says:

Ridiculous take on Bridgewater. He’s a fine smart and capable QB.

  28. Clean House Says:

    If they do this,
I’m officially done with this team and will root against them.
I will become a Saints fan and root for JW. My brother and his family live there, and I lived there for a few years.

I loathe Licht and really don’t care for BS to date-
I do t like pompous backstabbers

  29. #1 Pick QB 2 Cent Brain Says:

@Bobby That was 2 GMs ago not relevant at all

  30. Bucs Guy Says:

There are only 2 types of free agent stories you will hear over the next 2 weeks:
    1) Teams stating the obvious – Chargers looking at FA QBs since they’re not resigning Rivers.
    2) Smokescreens to fake interest and drive the price up for other teams.

I think you’re smart enough to determine which category this story falls into.
    HINT – It’s #2,

  31. TexBuc Says:

What we need is to keep Winston and commit to 50/50 run pass ratio. Improve OL and draft a bigger RB to complement Rojo.

  32. Jonzey Says:

Please don’t let Winston go it will be a big mistake watch

  33. Bucemup Says:

People freaking out over a QB that Bruce possible wants lol. Anyone that thinks Licht would tell Bruce who his QB is needs their brains checked. Who ever comes in to QB this team got Bruce’s stamp of approval. And who are we to tell Bruce who can and can’t run his offense. Teddy wasn’t asked to throw the ball all over the yard in Minnesota. Then he got hurt. So saying what he can and can’t do is laughable. Would you rather 30-35 Tds and 20-30 pics 0r 20-25 Tds and 7-12 pics? I’m trying to see wins. Turning the football over and watching 400 yard games has gotten us beat. I’ll sit back and chill while Bruce does his work since he is a two time coach of the year. IJS

  34. TexBuc Says:

When Sean Payton committed to a running game and limit the number of pass plays even with Drew Brees the Saints have become almost unstoppable the last few seasons.

  35. TexBuc Says:

    Bucup

Teddy averaged less than 200 yards a game as a Viking and the most TD he ever threw was 14 in a season. When the running game was stopped the Viking offense was toast.

  36. Tye Says:

    One thing is for sure…
Teddy Bridgewater and Blaine Gabbert (2 castoff 1st round draft picks)..
If Arians can resurrect either one of their careers as a Starting QB and win with them, he just may live up to his reputation!

  37. stpetebucsfan Says:

Geesh I gotta wonder if some folks here just want a lot of TD’s and yardage or would actually prefer to win.

So Teddy’s career was obviously interrupted by the horrible knee injury.

    When he’s played he’s WON….17-11 with Minn. and 5-1 for N.O.

So he doesnt’ have JW’ “deep ball” cannon. He has an overall record of 22-12 compared to JW’s 28-42. There is no way Bridgewater would have lost those last two home games that could have given us a winning record

  38. PuertoRicanBucFan Says:

Test Bridgewater is not a check down Charlie like Glennon. Did you not watch him against us? Also he had no problem getting the bal l downfield to Stephon Diggs in Minnesota thus earning him a pro bowl. He is definitely an upgrade over Winston nist in the aspect of how much more he will protect the ball. Trust me Bridgewater will get the ball downfield no problem when the opportunity is there

  39. Adrnagy Says:

That’s fine. Bucs are hot for him. But is teddy hot for the Bucs. There’s an article in teddy having interest in chargers and LA.
Also , something to note. Bruce Arians has kept saying what’s on door no.2 , let’s not forget that perhaps jameis has given indication to licht he wants to see what’s on no.2.
It’s totally possible it’s the other way around.

  40. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Stepete

You seem to be ignoring the massive elephant in the room when you mention Teddy Bridewaters W/L…..

Hmmmm what’s been the main difference between the Vikings and Saints compared to the Bucs over the past few years……..Oh ya defense.

  41. bucfan999 Says:

Please God NO…..not captain checkdown who while in Minnesota never threw more than 15 TD’s in a season and is so risk averse he checks the ball down 90% of the time. I don’t see the fit with BA’s no risk it no biscuit philosophy. If we get Teddy say good bye to the long ball and top 5 offense and there will be no way we play in the Super Bowl

  42. Tbbucs3 Says:

Ignoring the Bucs defensive struggles while trying to make Jameis look bad by bringing up his 28-42 record is obvious bias and is intellectually lazy.

  43. I’m a Tandyman used to be Bucs Fan Says:

Finally some sensible talk!! Now act on it, get Jay Miss outta Dodge and give Teddy the keys to the Rolls and see what happens!! Finally the Bucs are making some sense!! Do it and with the talent the Bucs have watch them get to the Playoffs in their new Dream- Cicle Unis!!!

  44. SOEbuc Says:

No problem here compared to any other FA QB other than Brady. Bridgewater is a gun slinger and lost one of nine games starting in 2019. W’s and 33/30 TD/INT are the only stats I care about. He had Michael Thomas. We have Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Cam Brate. Three pro bowlers that have proved their skills without getting catches from the deep ball from overthrow Jameis. It’s all but certain Perriman is gone. Maybe Jonathan Taylor or JK Dobbins in the second can become Alvin Kamara for us. Transfer from Sean Payton’s mind to BA’s is something that gets me warm about Bridgewater.

  45. BucHead588 Says:

I’m really growing on the idea of Bucs getting Bridgewater I was hoping a Bucs drafted him coming out of Louisville also if the Bucs draft another RB an Get a WR3 this team will be in the playoffs just think how many more games would Bh w have Won if Teddy was here last year N threw say 24 TDs an 12ints

  46. Tbbucs3 Says:

“Bridgewater is a gun slinger and lost one of nine games starting in 2019.”

Wrong and wrong…….we sure like to ignore facts on this website don’t we?

Since when is throwing 14 TDs in back to back seasons mean your a gunslinger?

Keep in mind that Teddy Bridewater couldn’t beat our JOSH MCCOWN to start for the Jets. That alone should be a red flag. If we sign Bridgewater were going backwards.

  47. BigHog Says:

This is all Smoke @ Mirrors…..it’s that time of year….BRING BACK Mr. 5,000 and STOP blowing smoke up my anus!!

  48. Big O Says:

Never mind bucks and jameis need to part ways plain and simple regardless who is the next person to center. “You can’t beat a dead horse with a stick”

  49. SOEbuc Says:

Tbbucs3…yeah you’re right. He started five but played in nine. All I mean by gunslinger is that he’s better at in’s and out’s compared to the deep ball.

  50. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

    Bridgewater > Winston

  51. AwshBucs Says:

James going to the Saints and flourishing with Sean Peyton would be the ultimate cosmic irony.

  52. Eric Says:

Drop off Teddy would be a fish out of water in this offense and what do a fish out of water do it dies people it dies!

  53. Ocala Says:

This would be idiotic….so of course I could see the Bucs doing this

  54. Juggernautical Says:

I’m not a huge Bridgewater fan but I caution anyone who things this guy can’t sling the ball to go back and simply re-watch his Week 5 (?) highlights against our Bucs. Plenty of deep balls and vertical routes

  55. Bucsfanman Says:

Tbbucs- “Bias”?! You’re talking about “bias”. That’s funny!
Teddy played one FULL 16 game season before that horrific knee injury. Yes, he only put up 14 TDs. Do you remember the Vikings’ scheme during that time? He wasn’t asked to do anything other than be a “game-manager”. Why? Because that’s what his coach wanted.
Is he the answer? You and I don’t know. What I do know is that we wouldn’t be having this conversation if we were 100% sure that we had our QB on this roster.

  56. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    Jamie’s to Saints = Steve Young 2.0

Sean Peyton is a far superior coach than Bruce Arians.

Just like with Jamie’s, stats, good and bad, matter.

Peyton’s winning and accomplishments as a head coach are far superior than Arians’.

Andrew Luck, Ben Roethelisberger and Carson Palmer we’re sacked 40 plus times and injured in Arians offense, and Jamie’s was no different in regards to this in Arians’ offense.

All of those QB’s are big men.

If the Bucs replace their QB, whoever it is must be able to take a 40 plus sack beating, because Arians has shown he doesn’t change his offense for anybody.

  57. Defense Rules Says:

Agree with Bucs Guy … this is a giant smokescreen. As StPete also said … when Teddy’s played, he’s won. Love that part of it, BUT … in his 6 seasons (96 games), he’s only played in 44 and only started 34. Sorry folks, that’s NOT the picture of durability & reliability.

I want our starting QB to actually start. David Carr has only missed TWO starts in his 6 seasons (96 potential games). Jameis has missed 8 games in his 5 seasons (80 potential games). Availability counts when it comes to starting QBs. I know … ‘No risk-it, no biscuit’. Not in this case. Let somebody else take the risk. HOPEFULLY this is just a smokescreen to let Jameis & Oily Rosenhaus know that $20 mil is the top offer or we’ll be going with who’s behind Door 2.

  58. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

I have to admit, I am LOVING reading the America’s Grop……errr, Quarterback seminole defenders crying over the crotchgrabbing turnover machine.

  59. Hodad Says:

Sean Payton has played against Jameis enough to know he ain’t worth a sh#t. No one wants America’s ATM. He’ll be pitching in the minor leagues next year living off the loot he made from the Bucs, and living his dream. Any of you Jameis fans remember Teddy threw for over 300 yards, and four TD’s against us? I didn’t think so.

  60. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

BA knows what he is doing. That said, hope he brings in a QB whom can wins games, not stats.

  61. Pewter power Says:

Sadly, that might mean the Bucs’ deep-ball prowess would near extinction, while ball-security would improve to what it was during the Mike Glennon era.

Sounds like you are comparing teddy to glennon, yea I can see him not liking you very much. Teddy will do what Winston cant protect the ball get the win. Apparently noted love the rollercoaster ride and drama of Winston so want to keep getting the style points while losing

  62. westernbuc Says:

Arians still won’t use his tight ends

  63. Stevebobucsfan Says:

I think the big issue here is, if u gonna get rid of Winston the Bucs better make damn sure the new QB will have the same or similar skills as Winston does with less interceptions and turnovers. Other than that I think it’s a start all again offense when you got to install a offense to fit the QB. I’ve watched the NFL for 40 years and 8 out of 10 times that situation turn into disaster. Nonetheless, I trust Arians moves he’s won every where he’s been including the Bucs 2 games better in his first year

  64. Sierra048 Says:

I’d trade Winston for a one-armed, blind amoeba. Would save a ton of cap space and definitely cut down on the turnovers.

  65. Cobraboy Says:

    My preferences:
    Brady—>Carr—>Dalton—Bridgewater—>Winston

  66. Doctor_berto Says:

So bring in a quarterback who needs an offensive line and running game to a team that doesnt have an offensive line or running game…in a vertical passing attack when the qb struggles pushing it down the field?

  67. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Mike Sando’s source is Ian Rappaport, lol…whose sources are other GMs guessing.

Those same GMs are the ones who said we will tag Shaq.

    Nothing but guessing.

  68. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    CPN Says
“I’m content with Bridgewater. I’d rather have Dalton, but anybody will do over America’s QB for the time being.”

    Clearly, you know QBs. Not.

Bridgewater is fragile and sucks. Dalton is not even worth mentioning.

  69. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    • “Winston hasn’t done it in 5 years”
    • Bridgewater hasn’t done it in 5 years
    • Carr hasn’t done it in 6 years
    • Dalton hasn’t done it in 9 years
    • Stafford not available
    • Brady not really available
    • Brees not available
    • Ryan Tannehill not available

  70. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If Stafford were available, I would take him in a heartbeat. Carr might be okay I guess.

But neither of them is available. Gruden and Mayock are blowing smoke, just lie Arians is.

Arians probably gave Jameis a call and told him to ignore anything he says in publick because its the misdirection season.

  71. unbelievable Says:

    Great post Bonzai.

I’d take Carr over any of the rest of those bums.

If they sign bridgewater we mind as well just start looking at the 2021 draft cuz we ain’t winning chit in the NFC south with a QB who can’t throw more than 14 TDs a season.

  72. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

I’m not seeing it with Bridgewater. To me he looks like a quality career NFL backup, nothing more or less. I’d rather see the Bucs roll with Jameis again than sign Teddy. Brady, Carr, or Dalton seem interesting alternatives to Jameis if he prices himself out of a job. Bridgewater (as well as present day Rivers, Tannehill, Foles, etc.)…meh. Then again I thought Hackenberg was going to be great (hey, we all can make a mistake…gotta own it), so I’ll leave it to a guy like Arians to decide who he thinks he can win with.

  73. Crabberbill Says:

I’d love to see Teddy as our QB. Look at the turnovers that “TexBucs” provided. Teddy 6 years 35, Winston 5 years 119. You can’t win with all the turnovers !!

  74. Mike Johnson Says:

I’ve said all along our Bucs might take Bridgewater. he’s smart and knows how to manage a game.He completes passes and his turnovers are not that great. ANYBODY REMEMBER A GUY NAMED..BRAD jOHNSON?

  75. Nick2 Says:

Yes!!!!!! My prayers are being answered. Arians watched Bridgewater carve us up like a Thanksgiving turkey and wanted him as bad as I did. Please say this is true it’s Teddy or bust. Why should we keep someone who won’t get a starting gig with any other team?????
