Can’t Let Scrubs Blow Up

Former Bucs QB Shaun King was left bummed after the loss to the Saints.

It is one thing to let Drew Brees beat you.

The guy already has folks making his bust for the day he enters the pantheon of greats in Canton.

It’s quite a different animal to get roasted by a couple of nobodies.

That’s the gist from former Bucs quarterback Shaun King in the wake of the loss to the Saints that knocked the Pewter Pirates, for all intents and purposes, from playoff contention.

First, the Bucs were roasted by rookie wide receiver Willie Snead from the football factory known as Ball State. He caught seven of eight targeted passes for 122 yards, the second-best game of his career.

Then, with Mark Ingram out for the year, the Bucs thought they would get a break in the Saints’ run game. But, no! Tim Hightower ran for 85 yards and a touchdown.

It marked both Hightower’s first touchdown and best game in four years!

King, one of but three quarterbacks to lead the Bucs to the NFC Championship game, accepts getting fried by Brees, but not a couple of ham and eggers.

“It is one of those things if Antonio Brown hits you with those numbers, but not Willie Sneed,” King said. “That is what is disappointing, We let a team with Tim Hightower and Willie Sneed beat us.”

That, to Joe, goes town to team discipline — just like week after week after week collecting more flags than a veterans cemetery the day after Memorial Day.

I don’t think its discipline but lack of depth. Sterling handled Braden Cook, but Jude was unable to cover anyone thus Sneed’s numbers. The run defense suffered from the injuries to the defensive line and Kwon being out. There scrubs were better than ours. I’m sure the Saints were saying we can’t lose to Jude and Carter and this pair of nobodies at DE for the Bucs.

  2. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Come on Joe, the team just lacks talent on the defensive side of the ball. They had no pass rush because outside of McCoy they are all back ups or practice squad players on the D line. Our safeties are scrubs as well as our cornerbacks. With Kwon out we have basically TWO starting calibur players on defense. This is not a team that can win consistently in the NFL. If they can fill a lot of holes via FA and the draft in the offseason maybe next year they can be a real playoff contender.

  3. Stanglassman Says:

Sneed is a very good WR he beat out another up and coming Wr in 6′ 6″ Branden Colman. WR depth hasn’t been the Saints problem this season.

  4. mike Says:

Scrubs love us. One game with us and they get a contract next year… austin, andersen, hightower, mallet just to name a few.

  5. Fsuking Says:

It’s cause we had our super scrub rookie out there trying to cover him. I laugh in the face of all who thought he was even halfway decent. Can u believe people still defend him??? I still hear “aw he’s just a rookie”!? Those are not rookie mistakes people, he let’s dudes run free like dogs at the track

  6. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Lol, I was typing mine before I read your post destro. You are right on with your comments. King talks about Snead and Hightower beating us but if he points out the players they were able to beat it isn’t surprising. Our undrafted free agents we have on starting on our defense aren’t exactly world beaters.

  7. Fsuking Says:

    @TouchdownTampaBay
Thats not true at all. People drastically underestimate the talent on our team, especially on defense. It’s because we have a coach that could make the Broncos defense look like a middle school team. Between Verner, Banks and Moore we have better CBs than half of the NFL. We have the best DT situation in the NFL with at least 3 quality starters there alone. Two of our three linebackers could start anywhere and our safeties are also on the field. So many teams do so much more with so much less on defense, it makes me wonder how much more incompetent Lovie Smith is than how he appears. It must be tragic.

  8. Couch Fan Says:

At what point are you going to realize that it isnt a talent issue, its a lack of preparedness. It’s a lack of enthusiasm. It’s a lack of coaching just as much as anything else. Simple things like 3rd and long that anyone should be able to stop, doesnt get done.

  9. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Last weeks starters were Howard Johnson, William Gholston, Tony McDaniel, Danny Lansanah, Bruce Carter, Jue Adjei-Barima & Major Wright. Damn you are right Fsuking, this defense is loaded with future hall of famers. My bad. LMAO.

  10. biff barker Says:

    Their scrubs schooled our scrubs.

  11. biff barker Says:

    We need better scrubs!

  12. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Talent is almost the only issue couch. Bad players that arent very good get penalized often when they are getting burned. If Josh McCown was playing for the Patriots this year in place of Brady do you think there might be a drop off in wins for them. Even great coaches have to have good players.

  13. ChessMaster Says:

Funny, I didn’t see Lovie rip the helmet of the Saints defender, nor did I see any high fives from Lovie to Evans after the play. How in the heck do you blame coaches? What do you do, bench Evans? And who replaces Evans on the field that can make plays? Dye?

  14. Couch Fan Says:

Yea no other team has to put in scrub players because The Bucs are the only team that has to deal with injuries LoL. And of course the good teams that do have all pros backing up all pros right? LoL

The Excuses for good ole nice guy Lovie are hilarious.

  15. Couch Fan Says:

What do you do, bench Evans? And who replaces Evans on the field that can make plays? Dye?
    ———————————————–
You are acting like individually stupid plays is a random occurence. If it were, then you’d be correct. But its the norm for this team. Multiple people on both sides of the ball routinely make idiotic penalties…. that falls on the coach. But continue with the excuses please.

  16. Couch Fan Says:

How in the heck do you blame coaches? What do you do, bench Evans?*
    ——————
Sorry thats what I meant to post.

    and TDTampaBay…

Wow. The only issue huh? Ok.

  17. Brandon Says:

Tim Hightower had 28 carries, he averaged 2.9 ypc. He didn’t “beat us”. Brees and the lack of pressure on him, beat us. Hightower was simply the recipient of 28 carries and had to get some yards. Holding him to 2.9 ypc is impressive.

  18. bucrightoff Says:

It’s like 2013, who cares that we can stop the run when the secondary is so bad any average QB will destroy it? I’m still shocked teams aren’t throwing 50 times a game against the Bucs. When a defense has an awful secondary + no pass rush, it better be good against the run.

  19. Hawaiian Buc Says:

As I keep saying week after week, it’s time to stop this nonsense and put Banks back in. Nothing against #38, but you’re crazy if you think he’s better than Banks. Whatever Banks did to piss off Lovie, those two need to reconcile, and now.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Shaun King is totally Full of $hit….

We got beat by Drew Brees and the Saint’s D.

Snead is a good WR & it took Hightower 35 rushes to get the 85 yards….

We should be more focused on the Offense’s impotency than the D…..it was an average day for the Saints Offense…..

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 9 points.”

  21. Patrick in VA Says:

Listened to the Commish podcast this morning and I think he really nailed it with his assessment of what this team’s focus needs to be this offseason. We don’t need to change the losing culture in the locker room anymore. Bringing in Jameis has taken care of that. We need to purge ourselves of the loser players. We have players at all tiers of the player hierarchy who have shown that they are not winners. They don’t get up for the big games. They don’t play their best when the team needs them. A big job for the front office this offseason is getting those flat tires out of the locker room or adjusting their roles on the team so they’re not bringing the team down anymore. We have winners on the team. We have guys like Doug Martin who are fighting hard for every inch that they get. We have LVD who is flying to both sides of the field. We have Jameis who is giving it everything he has on every play. Those guys shouldn’t be brought down by the losers and the me-first players.

    —————-
Please tell me you’re joking about this comment? I watched Verner get burned several times in this game and even watched Snead beat Banks on a 3rd and long after Banks missed the tackle short of the first down marker. So if you say these CB’s are quality starters you’re sadly mistaking. I like Moore so far but let’s not forget Dallas was fine letting him walk rather than resigning him.

They put him in but pulled him back out after 3 plays once Snead beat him on a 3rd and long.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

Contrary to what King says, Saint’s scrubs didn’t beat us. And actually neither did Drew Brees. We beat ourselves .. again. Brees did a masterful job of capitalizing on our weaknesses (not the first time he’s done that by the way). And yet, the Saints only scored 25 points … in 37 minutes on the field. We beat ourselves offensively and defensively.

Part of the reason is that the Bucs were flat Sunday. Shame on them. Part of it is that we lack talent in a number of positions, especially on defense. That’s tough to fix through free agency … other NFL teams don’t let great players walk. We’ll get there I’m convinced (and yes, with Lovie at the helm), but it’ll take time. Probably 2-3 years to compete in the NFC.

  25. Attorney Erin Woolums Says:

We are still in this. Do not give up hope. Go Bucs!

  26. Wes Says:

I’d like to hear what Shawn King has to say when we win a game for once…

  27. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Waterboy,

Yes, he did. That wasn’t a good play, but you could argue he was cold off the bench and was completely on an island. However, #38 got beat on 3rd and 21, so why did he stay in the game? That’s the thing, there seems to be accountability with some players but not others. Now obviously I don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, but it sure seems like Lovie wasn’t a fan of Banks from day one.

  28. Howard Cosell Says:

    @Erin
    No….we’re not

  29. BucFan20 Says:

The Bucs are 2 games out. Can’t win back to back games . And would need to win out and still need help. There are no playoffs.

  30. Buccfan37 Says:

Still talking playoffs, that’s barfable. Getting one more win to reach seven is a daunting task for the Buccos.

  31. 813bucboi Says:

@waterboy…I totally agree…we lack so much talent on the defense its not even funny….starting banks would change nothing…he will still get beat just like he has all season…I rather give jude a chance to get his feet wet and gain experience…its obvious to see that jude wont be starting next year but at least he has some game reps…banks may not be with the team next year…@patrickinva nailed it…the next step for this organization is to rid itself of the players that don’t care if they lose or not….people say its lovies fault that the team came out flat…lol..that’s BS….as a HC if you have to get your team pumped/fired up to play a division opponent with a chance to get into the playoffs, then you don’t need to be an nfl player…I bet ron rivera didn’t have to pump his team up and I would say the same thing about the seahawks…mature experience teams know exactly what’s at stake and know how to prepare to go out and take care of business…they don’t need the HC to say anything they already know win and we’re in….until this team grows up and becomes more mature, we will continue to do stupid things that will cost us games….GO BUCS!!!!

  32. Patrick in VA Says:

Ahhhh. There they are. I was confused about what site I was on there for a little while. Now that all the nay-sayers have returned, it feels like JBF again. I wonder that they’re planning for next year when if we have another good draft and fill some more of these holes and Jameis has another year under his belt. Maybe they’ll get promoted at work for being so much more productive since they’re not spending their days disparaging the team.

  33. orlbucfan Says:

That’s the one BIG bitch I’ve got with Lovie: he gets a hair up his badoda with players he didn’t bring in. Now, he’s laying off guys like GMC, LVD, Doug M, V-Jax,and a couple of others. But, the rest, forget it. Koetter makes him back off a little on offense. Lovie needs to check the ego at the door, and concentrate on fixing our defense. Aints beat us Sunday cos of injuries, HOF QB vs. rookie, and just flat. Sean Payton has always pulled late/dirty hits on us. So, what else is new? 8-8. Go Bucs–Champs in 2016!!

  34. mike Says:

Wait, is king calling guys “scrubs”? LOL shaun…

  35. Fsuking Says:

I understand that a lot of you don’t understand defensive concepts, but if you did, you would have the same questions I do about WTF Lovie Smith is doing!? He let the game of football pass him by. He simply doesn’t understand that Drew Brees has no problem throwing a 10 yard out to Willie Snead against Banks in tight coverage for a first down. You can’t play man coverage on that route from 7 yards off the line of scrimmage. It doesn’t work like that!

  36. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Fsuking,

It’s debatable as to whether the game has passed him by, but that was a bad defensive call in my opinion (unless it was executed wrong by Banks). I remember seeing Banks come in, then watching him back off the line 10 yards, with zero safety help. I watched Brees look there pre-snap, then take the snap and quickly make the easy throw. I understand why Banks would play a bit soft, because if he didn’t and got beat, Snead would walk into the end zone.

  37. Attorney Dion Hancock Says:

We’re still young and learning how to win. Willie Snead isn’t that bad.

  38. Buccfan37 Says:

Got the sue me sue you blues, great Harrison song.

  39. godzilla13 Says:

We got beat by a better team and still we beat ourselves. Why can’t coaches get it through to Alterraun Verner and Mike Evans, in this game keep your hands off the other player? Other teams do it. Why can’t we? Howard Jones, didn’t you get called for hand to the face the week before? Then you have the Penn State graduate, criminology major who cant figure out how not to hold the defender. Simple Donovan, you do not grab hold of him. Do you understand? Sterling Moore played very well. Bradley McDougald and Major Wright stink. Jude Ali-Baba needs to ride the pine or does playing like crap not apply to Ali-Baba. Verner and Moore are our best corners. Play Banks at Safety and see how it goes. What do we have to lose? Wake up Lovie, there are a ton of talented OC and DC biting at the bit for a HC job.
