Spence Sure Weed-Speed Issue In Rearview

Yes, defensive tackle Akeem Spence was arrested in Alabama in January after a traffic stop. Police claim he was driving over 100 miles per hour while in possession of marijuana.
Of course, Joe talked to Spence about this today, the first time Spence was available to media since the incident.
Spence’s “bench trial” in rural Alabama on the weed charge was bumped back to July earlier this month. He has been ordered to pay a fine for the speeding violation or have his day in court in July, as well.
Spence said he’s “real confident” the matter will be disposed of smoothly in Alabama court. Spence has had no prior legal troubles.
In discussing the incident, Spence did not claim innocence and seemed contrite.
“That was some stuff that was supposed to be taken care of last week, but I told them to push it back [to the summer] because I wanted to be here. I didn’t want to miss any work days,” Spence said. “It’s just something small. Some [stuff] that happened. It was a mistake.”
Spence also was confident the new Bucs regime won’t hold his actions against him as long as he does the right thing moving forward.
Joe hopes Spence has learned a valuable lesson.

Everyone’s entitled to a mistake here and there, as long as something was learned from it. At the same time I would hate for someone to bring up what I was doing at that age. Keep going forward Akeem,

I’m a big fan of Joe and this site. It may be a little jumpy at times but it’s a small price to pay since Joe doesn’t charge us.
As far as Spence is concerned, I think he’s a good kid. Unless this becomes a reoccurring problem I’m not worried about him.

Spence should do well with the new coaching staff. He could be the guy beside GMC causing havoc in Frazier’s new system. I don’t see any more problems coming out of him either. This was his 1st offense so not a big deal yet. GO BUCS!!

Nobody is safe. A guy that was more than serviceable at his position was traded from the team and not only has he never been arrested, but was also the victim of a stabbing which apparently was the last nail in the coffin.
Spence’s actions could’ve killed somebody and himself. Nevermind the debate whether weed should or shouldn’t be legal, the fact is it is not legal in Alabama and Spence knew that. You should not risk throwing away a promising future by getting caught with a little baggy of grass. It is like the new NFL rules, adjust or youre done whether you agree with it or not.
That said I would not like to lose Spence, who was a surprising upgrade over Roy Miller. But I would not be surprised if Spence is ousted during summer cuts because again, he actually broke the law and put lives in danger unlike ousted Mike Williams.

Spence, just say that Schiano leaked the story of your bust in Alabama and it will all be well. On a serious note, if he keeps his nose clean (no pune intended) he has a good chance to stay on our team but as others have said Lovey doesnt spread his love on those who get in the headlines off the feild. We need you big guy.
