No Excuse For Zac Robinson Not To Be Creative

Use your players’ talents.

This can be fixed if the offensive coordinator is motivated and open-minded.

As Joe typed yesterday, the explosive play rate for the Bucs is brutal. Dead-last. Unless you only factor in the past four games. Using only the data from those four games, the Bucs are No. 31.

With the talent the Bucs have on offense, that is simply inexcusable. You can’t use Jalon Daniels as an excuse. Hell, the Bucs *improved* with Daniels — by a very scant margin.

NFL data scientist Steve Patton of Statrankings.com had a graphic about quarterbacks who made the most outside of script. As you can see in the graphic below, Baker Mayfield and Daniels are excellent at making plays outside the pocket and off script.

A savvy, open-minded offensive coordinator, seeing how his passing offense looks like a car stalled on a street flooded with seawater, would notice that Mayfield/Daniels can make explosive plays by using their legs or at least getting them outside the pocket.

(If you believe in EPA — Joe is very suspicious of this stat, but boy, the statgeeks swear it is an 11th Commandment — Mayfield isn’t the best when plays break down but we all saw last Sunday how he made a play with his feet that ended in a touchdown.)

How about some RPOs? Some options? Maybe a keeper or two off-tackle? You don’t have to use a lot, maybe a half-dozen plays. Something to add a spark and get the ball downfield better than throwing to receivers three yards behind the line of scrimmage.

Joe doesn’t know how many more opponents in the next 10 games outside of Carolina that you can obliterate on the ground like the Bucs did to the Stinking Panthers last Sunday.

Joe took Robinson to task for not going back to watch Daniels at Kansas and maybe lift a half-dozen plays he was comfortable with and use them with the Bucs to help Daniels out.

Nope, it was the same ol’ drop the ball off to a receiver behind the line of scrimmage.

In Joe’s eyes, that’s irresponsible for a coach not to take advantage of some of your players’ skill sets, especially when you have the worst explosion rate in the game.

It’s the slowest collection of WR/RBs in the league. So in terms of explosive plays, the talent is objectively an excuse.

No one tall enough to lob it up either. No one is athletic/skilled enough to adjust to a deep ball. Everything always has to be perfect.

You’re asking a playcaller that was fired last year to overcome these big hurdles. Maybe Hurst develops, but he’s 1 guy.
