Calijah Kancey And His Touchdown Backflop
October 29th, 2026
Calijah Kancey discusses his scoop-and-score.
It wasn’t a bellyflop. It was a backflop.
Calijah Kancey scored his very first NFL touchdown last week at Carolina and Joe decided to have some fun with him.
Joe told Kancey he did a backflop. It was like a bellyflop but he instead landed on his back. Joe winced in pain watching it. And Joe honestly thought, as often as Kancey has unfortuantely missed time over the years with this injury or that injury, that he made have done a lot more damage than good on the play.
Kancey swore to Joe his flop didn’t hurt.
“Nah, it didn’t hurt at all,” Kancey swore to Joe.
Tez Johnson, known for his gymnastic flips and rolls when he scores, was very dubious of Kancey saying he didn’t feel anything.
“He may not have felt anything then but he definitely felt something Monday morning,” Tez told Joe. “I was shocked. I was shocked he even tried to flip.”
Kancey told Joe, rather than the row-the-boat routine Bucs defenders often do after a defensive touchdown, his flop wasn’t choreographed at all.
Kancey maintained his flop was a spur-of-the-moment thing that crossed his mind when no one was near him to try to bring him down on the fumble return.
“You don’t get that many chances [to score] as a D-lineman,” Kancey said.
So why not the P.J. Fleck/Jason Pierre-Paul row-the-boat routine? Has it been retired? Kancey said it’s not retired.
“I think that’s still a thing,” Kancey said. “We just kind of talk about celebrations as a defense when we get a turnover, and we just kind off with that.
“We did [the row-the-boar] a lot. I wouldn’t say it’s retired. You got to ask some of the older guys who’s been here, who’s been doing it.”
But you know what, Joe doesn’t care if Bucs defensive players pull a Colin Simmons and try to water the lawn if they score a defensive touchdown.

And that’s where we’re different. Kancey had fun with his celebration without disrespecting his opponent. Simmons act was the very definition of unsportsmanlike conduct. Low class. Bush league. It will follow him for the rest of his career.
