Adam Schefter: Baker Mayfield And Team Glazer Had Noteworthy Dinner

“He didn’t touch the brisket, Bryan.”
So Buccaneers co-owner Joel Glazer showed up at training camp last month and, magically, a Vita Vea raise and contract extension was sealed hours later.
Now comes speculation from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter that Mayfield dining and mingling with Team Glazer last week was an important piece of the contract-extension puzzle.
Mayfield signed an extension through the 2029 season yesterday.
“[Mayfield] was at a function last week, the sponsorship dinner with the organization, sitting at the table with the owners,” Schefter said on his podcast. “You’re like, ‘Oh, what’s that about?’ Right? Your sitting with the owners at the sponsorship dinner, like that’s interesting to me. You take note of those little things and you see ultimately where they wind up.”
Yesterday morning, before the deal was toasted at One Buc Palace, Schefter was on the same podcast saying he expected the Bucs to make one more run at Mayfield before the NFL season kicked off.
Joe is intrigued by how important things seem to happen when Team Glazer is around.

The Glazers know exactly what they are doing.
They know football. They know business.
They have won 2 SBs as owners. That’s more than Khan. The idiot from Atlanta who waits on the sidelines like a homeless guys in a park when he thinks they are going to win. More than Jones since 2000. More than Miami. Cleveland. Minnesota. Chargers. And on and on. They’ve done it with two different coaches two decades apart.
That’s impressive.
So give them credit.

As someone who has negotiated contracts in the hundreds of millions of dollars, I can tell you from experience how you plan. The immediate team conducting the negotiation has a plan that has been approved by the intermediary and the final approver before you ever start. Everyone has different approval amounts. You want to resolve things at the lowest level when possible. You don’t want every deal to go to the Glazers.
For example, maybe one of JL’s assistants started the negotiations, but he couldn’t agree to anything more than $45M per year. At some point the Assistant realizes this isn’t going to happen and he elevates to JL (intermediary). Licht could only agree to a max of $52/yr. When it goes above that he has to go to the final approver — the Glazers. Only they can set a new number. In this case $55M/yr.
Other issues, such as the length of the contract, guaranteed money and other perks make it more complicated with trade offs (more year, but less money or less guaranteed money). I have no inside knowledge, I’m just sharing how large contracts are often negotiated.

I like the optics of Baker seated with the owners at the sponsorship dinner. Might one speculate that the sponsors gave some feedback to the appropriate persons? Did the Glazers run up the flag to see who would salute? Or an inside reveal to the inner circle?

My wife was at that dinner she said a coach she didn’t know who he was. Was roasting baker on stage about his comments on feeling disrespected. So I knew then they were signing him. Or those jokes would have never been made especially with the glazers in the room. She sat at a table she said with some rookie who’s dad played linebacker. Josiah trotter. And I had to sit home and watch the kids because she didn’t have an extra invite for me. That would have been a fun thing to be a part of.

JL was just on WDAE. He basically said he did the deal with Baker with Greenberg and his team. He said the Glazers have full confidence in him to do these deals.
Wouldn’t be shocked to hear the Glazers wanted to give their input before writing a check for the largest deal in team history.

They’re morons, when you have all the leverage in a negotiation you don’t piss it away. This is business. I’m tired of seeing the stadium full of opposing fans.
Reality is they’re scared to death to draft a QB because they can’t evaluate one. And the best way to win is on a rookie QB deal. So they over pay and destroy the QB market. He can’t even make a top 100 list and he’s making 55 mil a year, because our head coach has clearly demonstrated what a Defensive genius he is, lets just blow the whole payroll on a QB who throws picks like jaymiss. Yeah, why question the billionaires.
