OK, it’s time to chum the waters.
For the first time in years, Joe is actually looking forward to Bucs training camp.
Yeah, for many, the start of training camp means football is here. The Joe typing here still has dark flashbacks to two-a-days as a high school kid. If Joe hasn’t overcome that black cloud yet, it won’t happen. So Joe struggles a great deal to embrace training camp as a ray of sunshine.
Yes, camp is a harbinger of the new season. Once those three or four weeks are over, we’re home free.
An annual occurrence, finding unique stories in the final days of the dead period of the NFL calendar becomes challenging. That all changed yesterday when Bucs Pro Bowl defensive tackle Vita Vea demanded a trade from the Bucs because, apparently, he’s frustrated the Bucs are dragging their feet in contract negotiations.
Vea is in a contract year.
Suddenly, fun has returned! Nothing beats good ol’ fashioned drama to spice up camp and make things exciting, if not interesting.
That’s certainly light years more fun than typing about the boilerplate, dreadful training camp stories of LEE-dehrs, and how Baker Mayfield completed five straight passes in warmups against zero defenders or how a linebacker is “looking” before pads come on.
What’s fun about the Vea squabble is former Bucs great Ndamukong Suh launched a Twitter campaign to advocate for his good friend (and client?) Vea.
There’s more: We all know Bucs coach Todd Bowles is perhaps the most unpopular Bucs coach since Joe launched this here website some 18 years ago, though former Bucs commander Greg Schiano might give Bowles a run for his money.
Naturally, Bucs fans are trying to blame Bowles for the Vea contract dispute. Hell, Bowles gets blamed for everthing from unrest in the Middle East to climate change.
It is funny to Joe because Bowles has very little, if anything, to do with contracts. You think Bowles wants to get rid of Vea? LOL
Twitter freaked out about Bowles last night. That was expected. But the fan outrage is worse than Joe expected. It’s almost like folks were waiting for something like this to happen. TikTok last night was flooded with well-produced videos of folks unloading on Bowles, blaming him for the offseason exodus of top players.
Yes, there were the expected Bucs-fans-screaming-into-a-camera videos. But the tricky spliced and diced anti-Bowles videos that surfaced last night were extraordinary.
But it wasn’t just Bucs fans fingering Bowles for the root of Tampa Bay’s problems. This morning on “Wakeup Barstool,” seen on FS1, “Big Cat” tore into Bowles.
There, Big Cat explained how the Bucs lost two possible Hall of Fame players (Lavonte David and Mike Evans) this offseason. And, Big Cat said, the way the Bucs’ defense quit last year, and seeing how Vea wants out, it is obvious to Big Cat that Bucs fans are done with Bowles.
In short, Big Cat said, Team Glazer has a Todd Bowles problem.
“I do think there might be a blind spot here with the fact that they have kept Todd Bowles after a disastrous year last year,” Big Cat said. “And you are going to see the consequences of that because when you have a head coach that no one believes in, it’s hard to get buy-in.
“This is not a good start to the season when you already are having these things happen.”
It is a riot how folks are going after Bowles because of Vea’s contract dispute. It’s like months-long frustration that he was retained by Team Glazer after Bowles’ defense quit on him was finally turned loose last night. The Bucs collapsed after a 6-2 start in the league’s worst division to finishing 2-7 and miss the playoffs,
You know, like blowing off steam.
Folks, Lavonte David did not retire because of Bowles. If not for Bowles, David would have been gone years ago. Bowles is the one who talked David into staying when David wanted to retire after Dirk Koetter was fired.
Joe has been told by more than one Bucs source Mike Evans bolting to San Francisco had zero to do with Bowles. The firmness of these words from Bucs types about Evans’ departure suggests that’s true, though fans understandably have a difficult time believing that when they witnessed Evans explode on the defense after it choked away a key division win and the playoffs on Thursday Night Football.
Training camp hasn’t even started and already Bucs fans are full-throated screaming for Bowles’ head on a platter. Imagine what it will be like if the Bucs start out 1-3 or even 2-2.
This is approaching the level of a night game in 2013 when the Bucs hosted the Dolphins and Bucs fans, well-lubricated from tailgating, nearly had a mass riot to run Schiano out of town.

Jason Licht’s time here is done. We know this is Todd’s last year barring a miracle but Jason Licht hasn’t signed anybody since Brady left. Weird how that works. Reddick? LOL. Jason Licht has a 103 losses as a GM in 12 years here. Do the math. He stinks. Damn, it’s too early for this crap.

The biggest mistake the Bucs organization has made the past year was promoting Josh Grizzard to Offensive Coordinator when he clearly wasn’t ready.
Yes, the Bucs offense played well before the Bye, but once teams got tape on the Bucs’ offense and the injuries piled up, the Bucs couldn’t score enough points to win games with the exception of a couple of games.(Buffalo, Atlanta)
The Defense and Special Teams were also bad and that’s a reflection of Bowles’ choices of Assistants. And several of Licht’s picks on Defense haven’t worked out to put it nicely…JTS, Logan Hall, Chris Braswell.
The blame can be spread around for the Bucs’ collapse last year.

The team practically all quit last year esp after week 6 of the bye. It’s pretty clear if you watch some games. At this point we really don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes. It it hurts the Bucs fan base and other players who want to play for the Bucs. I’m ok with VV being traded for good draft pick or a good player. We need an experienced CB. I would rather see him stay like most others.

Stupidity abounds in the fan base on contract negotiations. No team could exist if they all paid what the players wanted. The Glazers and Jason Licht handle contracts. Coaches are hired to coach. not negotiate contracts. They can advised Jason and company.
The media loves a story so they are throwing gasoline ⛽️ into the fire. The NFL sets the payroll for the teams. The figures are designed to create parity so that teams in larger markets can’t throw more money at players with teams in smaller markets. This results in teams losing good players to other teams.
This means Baker gets paid well while Vita is paid less because there is only so much available to go around to everyone.
That’s the life of the NFL. Instead of letting Vita walk. trade him and get a playet or future draft pick in 2026.

First, I love the Bucs! Been a fan since the beginning! That said, you have to wonder if this was the plan all along. Licht does a good job looking ahead along with Greenberg keeping the cap in line. Knowing ME13 was likely to leave, and LD54 was already ready for retirement, with major contracts looming on aging players and other significant contracts on other underperforming players, perhaps keeping Bowles was just a way to eat this season and blow things up (rebuild) for next season. Players like Vea, AWJ, Godwin and McCollum all have trade value for next year’s QB heavy draft. An aging, but average at best team in the middle of the pack is somewhere you don’t want to be. Getting an A+ coach to come lead the disassembly would have been be a disaster for that staff, so maybe they let Bowles be the one to pull the short straw and start new after 2026. I don’t like it, but maybe that is the plan. Fully aware this isn’t Madden, but at some point every team has to reset. 31 teams are unhappy every year, and even with this fully healthy roster, I don’t think this team has the roster to be the one holding the trophy at the end.

1) Bowles wasn’t here
2) LVD wanted to leave after Koetter, not retire
3) LVD stated he loved playing for Bowles so he delayed retiring

Lavonte David said (more than once) he was ready to retire after Dirk Koetter got fired because he was sick of constant change at defensive coordinator. Todd Bowles, when he arrived in Tampa Bay, talked David out of it.

I agree that Lavonte David’s retirement had nothing to do with Bowles. David, like me, watched the tape and did not like what he saw. Last year, David was occasionally out of position, late to the ball, or missed a tackle he normally would have made. Father Time caught up to him and he wanted to hang it up before it got worse.
The jury is still out on Mike Evans. Unless or until something more material surfaces as to why Evans left for less money, higher income taxes, and more travel without any greater chance of going to and winning the Super Bowl, I and many others will continue that Bowles was at least part of the equation. If you have something solid, not rumor, please publish it!!
I understand Vea’s position. He is still a marquee nose tackle, but is no longer compensated like one. He is also looking for one last big payday. If the Bucs want to take a wait and see approach, he is better off going to a new team that will give him a fat new contract. It makes perfect sense for his long-term financial security.
But I also see Jason Licht’s side. He’s under contract. Baker is the priority. Once Baker is signed (or not), plans can be make for how to get others signed to longer-term deals and fit under future salary caps. Given Vea’s size and physicality, he is likely to have a sharp decline at some point in the near future. As Bill Belicheat and countless other coaches have said, better to get rid of a player a year too soon than a year too late.
I love Vita and would like to see him retire as a Buc, but this might not be practical at this point.

Okay, wow… is there a lot here…
1. It can be about Bowles *and* the contract. It could be that like (suspected) former #13 was (who is still dead to me) done with Bowles, Vea is also done with him. I strongly believe it was everything to do with Bowles, even if the unnamed “Bucs-types” say otherwise. They could be flat out lying to themselves and believe every word of it and still be wrong. 3rd & 28. 4th & 14. In the absence of any statement, we’re left with Occam’s Razor, and Mr. Occam says it was the team’s direction, which points directly at the sideline.
2. Bowles has nothing to do with contracts. That’s true. But hating to work for the man can directly affect contract negotiations and desire to remain in town. As it turns out, some players would take a pay cut and a huge bump in income taxes to play for a winner. I can’t think of any names off the top of my head, but I’m sure there’s a player or two out there in California somewhere.
Coming back to Mr. Occam… his razor is telling me that Vea’s going to be fine once they come to terms. This is about getting one last big contract, and he’s probably just reminding Buccaneers Ring of Honor General Manager Jason Licht that, as a 350 pound nose tackle in a 3-4 defense, he’s as arguably important as Baker is.

How is right. Bowles has very little to do with Via’s contract. He sees a few guys at his position making a lot more money than him. He knows he doesn’t have many years left. Suh was strictly a mercenary. Guess who Via has been training with. It’s not like the Glazers are too cheap to sign him. There is a hard salary cap in place. Sometimes contracts can be tinkered with to free up a little more space today, but that takes away from tommorrow. Due to his age I don’t think we can get a second round pick for him, but that’s what we would probably want. He might hold in for most or all of preseason, but he is not going to forgo any game checks. It’s a tough business. You sign a long term contract that puts you at the top of your position for a year. Typically with a bunch of guarantees. Next year somebody gets even more. Welcome to professional sports.

Fans wanted Bowles gone after he went 2-7 at the end of the season. It is not going to take much for fans to riot this year when no one wanted him but ownership. All because they are too cheap to pay out his contract since they just renewed it last season. We saw a lot of good coaches some that even made the playoffs last season get fired. Yet we some how kept Bowles around when he couldn’t get into the playoffs and had an epic collapse at the end of the season.

I have seen other posters call the Glazers absentee owners before the post above mine. It says a lot in only 2 words.
RE: Occam’s razor – the simplest answer is usually, not always, the correct one. Meaning, Vea just wants his bag. He IS underpaid. Targeting Bowles is a CREATED ASSUMPTION not a fact. Therefore, once assumptions are shaved away…we are left with Vea just wanting to be paid like others at his position. That is the proper usage of the principle.

Nerd Glazers hosed the fans. This is on them. Todd does not deserve to be here. I put my tail between my legs and renewed my season tickets recently. It feels counterproductive to contribute to the asinine decisions made by ownership. I can’t help it, I love the whole of game day experience, traditions etc. I wonder what the stadium will look like this year as far as attendance goes overall.

There were Bucs coaches worse than terrible Todd, but I dare say none of them had the talent that Todd has. Bennett , Williamson. lol. These guys didn’t have top to bottom talent. Should be an interesting last season for Todd and Jason. They are both gone after this season. Both have screwed this team up in their own special way.
BTW, Whether you like Gruden or not, he would still be better than Todd any day of the week.

Everyone knows in their heart of hearts that this team is destined for a 8-9 season again. It is hard to blame Bowles for contract issues, but it is not hard to blame players for wanting more money to stay and play for a loser. The Joes can talk all day about how great a guy he is, but at the end of that same day, he is a horrible HC. They’re going to have to start signing fans to contracts just to watch “Buffet Crushing, Kit Kat eating Bowles” for another year.

It’s true that Vita wanting to be traded isn’t 100% on Bowles – but this clearly is no longer a team that top talent wants to play for.
Remember the player ratings for the Bucs organization. Team Travel — F (32nd), Ownership — D- (29th), Treatment of Families — F (28th), Locker Room — C- (22nd), Food/Cafeteria — C- (24th), Head Coach — B- (26th).
Player complaints: the locker room was described as unclean/smelly, with bugs in the showers and a dirty, broken-down sauna; players also criticized cramped travel and the lack of a free family room on gamedays.

It’s hard for anyone to believe in Todd Bowles. Repeatedly making bad in game decisions! Poor in game clock management decisions! Quitting during games before the end of 60 minutes! Not making timely coaching changes when it’s obvious one is needed ( think of special teams play last season…waited until the end of the season to make a change)! Not being able to tell if his offense or his defense is playing better when making critical in game decisions. Refusing to adjust his defense to his available players. Not using his players to maximize their abilities. Not getting his team ready to play big games especially in the middle and at the end of the season. Expecting the players to be the coach and to motivate other players instead of doing what he’s paid to do. Making excuses and blaming others after a loss! Seldom accepting responsibility for wins and losses. Doing the same thing over and over again and hoping for different outcomes instead of making adjustments to achieve different outcomes.

It is pretty easy to tell who is carrying the water for the Bucs at this point. He is right. Keeping Bowles let everyone know what the Glazers think about winning versus finances. They just got a ring and now time to watch the checkbook. Why would any of the players on this team truly believe Todd Bowles can get them to the Super Bowl much less a playoff win? 8-9 again in one of the worst divisions in the NFL. Maybe we can see some more comments about division wins and playoff losses stemming from the worst division in football to round out this hit piece.

Its a legitimate question. How much blame should Bowles get? Ownership and the GM stand by him. If there’s more to thos story then spill it. Maybe Licht spent 5yrs of draft capital on offense. Because Bowles thought he could coach up what we have? Or maybe Licht has been generous with the offense. Because we have a new OC every year. Who knows? But at some point someone will have to hold him accountable. I mean the defense down the stretch last year was atrocious. They played worse as the year went on. The offense kept the team in position for all those come from behind close wins.

For the record, I have been calling for him to be canned since the end of the 2024 season. He is NOT a good coach.
And right now, the optics are not good for the Bucs. Bad coach they refuse to fire. Refusing to extend good players. This can’t be good for the locker room that Todd lost the D last year. Then, on top of the direct impact, why would any good free agent want to come here?

The bottom line is Bowles is the very example of Average.
He has a 500 record-AVERAGE as a Bucs Coach, and a losing record vas a Jets Coach. So for his career he has earned a C- grade. He is a decent man, but when it comes to football coaching and getting results over the years, NO… No matter what people say or think, Stoic Todd on the sideline is not inspiring anybody right now. When your Hall of Fame WR Mike Evans bolts from Tampa Bay to Frisco Bay, there is no way around it. The players saw the week after week lifeless efforts from the Defense last season. Mike could not stomach it anymore, ands was not going to waste his last few years playing for an organization that seems adrift with no real plan. At least it sure looks that way, by keeping Mediocre Average uninspiring Head Coach T Bowles. Again, Todd is a decent man, but he has not been a decent winning Head Coach…..

This isn’t about Bowles. This is about a total lack of organizational direction and veterans want no part of that.
NFL careers are short, why waste another season on a sinking ship if you don’t believe in the message and already have a full bank account?

Non Believer since the Jets! Not a hater but am waiting to see what the Buccaneers Administration saw that we Diehard Buccaneers fans saw prior to him becoming Head Coach? There’s a lot of explaining if we do go far in the Playoffs if not Super Bowl?
