Billy Schrauth Brings Coach To Tears
April 27th, 2026
As expected, the Bucs added a late-round pick to bolster their interior line over the weekend.
Notre Dame captain and guard Billy Schrauth got his name called by Tampa Bay in Round 5. And fitting the Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht stereotype, Schrauth is a Wisconsin farm boy from a very small high school.
The video below is from the local NBC 26 in Green Bay. Schrauth’s high school coach, who is entering his 55th season as head coach (yes, 55th) gets choked up talking about the greatest player he ever coached, and the first to reach the NFL.
Heartwarming stuff tied to a guy the Bucs hope can keep Baker Mayfield upright if injuries again strike the interior line.

Oh I can’t wait for some JBF commenters to build their smart boy selves up by somehow knocking this heartwarming story down. Because, we just can’t enjoy a heartwarming story without being a smart boy and making it negative, can we?

That was sweet. Looks like a great coach.

Licht normally likes to take tackles, so I wasn’t sure if Schrauth would be on his board or not – but I did like what I read about him leading up to the draft.
In any case, if Licht takes an offensive lineman, it’s already predetermined that they’re going to be good.

Coach Castle was our coach at Lakeland High for 52 years
5 years as an assistant under Paul Quinn 47 years as HC
But Castle is the winningest HC in Florida high school history
473 wins, 98 losses
But l think Billy Schrauth is a tough guy, my type of player
Jason Licht made a power move.
Getting Billy Schrauth and Ted Hurst with our 3rd round pick
April 27th, 2026 at 5:37 pm
2nd or 3rd round was quite optimistic we picked him in the 5th with our extra pick…..perhaps a real steal.
Licht knows Oline so we probably have a winner

That’s all I needed to see and hear about the kid to tell me we got us a good football player.

Schrauth is a good player.
He probably slipped in the draft due to last year’s mid season sprained MCL injury.
He also red shirted his Freshman year due to a foot injury.
Hopefully, the injuries are behind him so Buc fans won’t be “brought to tears”.
This interior OLine for the Bucs , although talented, has alot of past knee injury issues.

Someone will b!tch and complain about Bowles still being head coach here soon 😂
April 27th, 2026 at 6:20 pm
Would have gone a lot higher, some say second day if he didn’t have a knee injury last year. Think this guy is a steal in the 5th round. Could end up as a starter in a year or two. Great pick.

Jason Licht has signed some really good UDFA
April 27th, 2026 at 6:27 pm
Kan Johnson gonna have some serious competition as WR/PR
I can’t for training camp
April 27th, 2026 at 6:37 pm
Edge, ILB, WR, CB, OL
I’d be shocked if these five are not contributing to a degree this year.
The DT and TE… Not so sure about.
Wish them all well
LFG!

I use Draftek for my Big Board. They had him at #116 and Licht picked him at #160, a great value pick by Licht. Billy will work hard and I’m sure he’ll be in the weight room with his new OL brothers.

That was a very good story.

Rankings are so inaccurate, I don’t know why people bother with them. Mock drafts, which are nearly always wrong outside the top 8, are based on rankings.

I luv the kid already. small town and farm boy. I got him giving his all and making the team.

Just one suggestion for the young man.
To get on Jason’s good side.
Lose a couple teeth, dye your hair red and dawn a mullet.
Easy peasy.
Automatic Ring of Honor member.
You’re welcome.

i wonder if he’s only a guard…or if he can move to center as well…
the kid looks like a beast, and great depth…
it’ll be interesting to see how he develops…
if the work ethic is there, as the video states, he could be a terrific late pick…the potential for more licht magic is def there with this one

Too bad Bowles is still the HC.
April 27th, 2026 at 9:10 pm
Pathetic.

I really like this kid, he’s going to be really good for us

At a YouTube channel called Irish Illustrated, I stumbled across a film study of Billy Schrauth’s high school play from when he was being recruited by Norte Dame.
Schrauth was a relatively lean 6’5” tall and 280# as a high school senior. He played defense and offense.
As a defensive tackle, he played with power and quick first step penetration. When he made tackles in the backfield, it looked like he was going to crush the poor kids.
As a guard, he was the first to move off of the snap, and he just did whatever he wanted to do with the DL players before heading downfield to smash linebackers and safeties.
Last season, Schrauth’s knee got rolled over late in the first quarter of ND’s seventh game of the season which was against USC. He played 66 more snaps in the game, but then he was done for the season. Reporting from that game said that he was playing like a man possessed- maybe he knew his season was done. The highlights from the USC game looked a lot like the high school film except that he was only playing one side of the ball. I thing he could go back to DT and still be ferocious!

My only concern is his injury history. As a 5th rounder I’m pretty sure will be quite the bargain if he’s available when we need him. I realize that sometimes lady luck can be a real beeatch and sometimes ya just get snake-bit, but some players seem to be snake magnets. We already have more than our share of china dolls. A toy shouldn’t break just because a kid plays with it.

GO BUCS!!!!

Nice story. He can’t be any worse than the backup matadors we had waving defenders through the line last year.
April 29th, 2026 at 5:48 am
Solid addition to our O line. Jason knows O line.

Lots of Taints fans in here lately.
Go Bucs!
