Big Draft For Jamel Dean

April 1st, 2024

Last call.

The most interesting and prophetic Bucs-related report of the offseason came a few weeks ago.

It was when ESPN national NFL insider Jeremy Fowler dropped a nugget claiming Tampa Bay cornerbacks Jamel Dean and Carlton Davis were available via a trade. Fowler specified the Bucs were willing to move one of them but not both.

Fowler turned out to have great intelligence. The Bucs stunned a lot of fans by dealing Davis and two sixth-round draft picks to Detroit for a third-round pick this year.

Dean stays on the roster and head coach Todd Bowles said publicly that third-year cornerback Zyon McCollum will start in place of Davis.

That leaves Dean earning a truckload of money coming off his worst season in a long time. No interceptions for Dean last year and he had just four passes defensed, a horrid total. Even Richard Sherman screamed at Dean for weaksauce play that might have cost the Bucs a win in Buffalo.

Does anyone think Dean will be on the Bucs roster in 2025 to earn the $13 million he’s scheduled to make? It’s certainly possible. Dean has the talent to rebound. But if the Bucs were willing to deal him, then Joe can’t think of a bigger red flag when it comes to a player’s future in Tampa.

For Dean, the draft looms just 3 1/2 weeks away. Joe would advise Dean to pay close attention. His 2025 whereabouts could be on the line.

I don’t think Dean has a competitive bone in his body, unfortunately

  2. Capt. Tim Says:

Hopefully this is his last season.
Dean Signed his contract, and stopped playing hard.
Hes missed so much playing time, he wont be missed as much as a starting CB should be.

    Performance and availabilty.
    Hes provided neither

  3. 2023 Surprised the Hell out of me Says:

    good analysis Capt.

A smart G. M. trades player when its optimal for the team ….

  4. Bama Rich Says:

Kool Aid McKinstry would be a nice replacement

  5. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I still believe that a top shelf corner is our biggest need. Simple as that.

  6. Smashsquatch Says:

Build a pass rush and you can start an army of Zyons at CB. A good pass rush makes all corners look good. It doesn’t work the other way.

  7. Bobby M. Says:

Both Dean and Davis were grossly overpaid for what was asked of them. Had they got to play more press man coverage, I think their value would have been more on display. Neal at safety likely ruined that style of coverage so the safe play was zone. You can’t pay $25-30 million per year for two CBs to sit in zone. I thought it was a complete waste of resources that could have been used on the o-line, RB and TE. On top of overpaying for zone coverage those two can’t make it through a season….ever!

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

I have nothing against Dean, but the only time I remember him being above average is when his contract was getting ready to be up. Draft a CB in the 3rd that can learn this year and start next year.

  9. Biff Barker Says:

    Overpaid

  10. SB~LV Says:

There are draft day trades that once upon a time had more player trades, the trend seems to be returning.
So sit tight, if the stars align with names on an off the board come draft night suitcases could be packing.
    Say….
    Draft history
How many remember when the Vikings had a brain fart announcing their pick
And 2 teams jumped them turning in picks before they got their sheet together.
    Lol …
    Oh and another thing
Be sure to follow the Pat MacAfee draft show when you can’t stand the over structured official NFL draft melodrama

  11. Capt. Tim Says:

30 mil is alot for the 29th ranked pass defense.

  12. stpetebucfan Says:

Talent that is not on the field is irrelevant. You can’t contribute from the whirlpool.

Dean’s stats are just as bad as Davis when it comes to ‘AVAILABILITY”.

It’s virtually a waste of time debating their talent or lack of picks or anything else for that matter. IF YOU’RE NOT ON THE FIELD YOU’RE NOT RELEVANT!!!

  13. bucsfaninOregon Says:

If Dean should be worrying about who the Bucs pick, what do you think JTS and Logan Hall be doing?

I accidently posted my comment on another thread…Kool-Aid had 2 interceptions in 3 years at Bama. If the Bucs took a CB in the 1st, it seems like it’d be a guy who is a ballhawk. Lord knows Davis and Dean aren’t.

  16. NJbucs23 Says:

I like Dean, the dude has wheels, but he couldn’t catch a beach ball if it hit him in the face. The guy does play a very good man coverage, just don’t expect him to get interceptions.

CB is def a position I see the Bucs drafting 3rd round

  17. Boss Says:

    I like dean and davis….

there is a reason teams targeted the middle of the field so much!

I think Zy will keep up

  18. gotbbucs Says:

This is Dean’s last season with the Bucs.

  19. Buc1987 Says:

I agree with Smashsquatch and prolly Joe too.

  20. TampabayDJ Says:

I’m not saying that Dean had a good year last season at all, but it’s funny how many fans turn on a player who , just the year before, were saying that he’s the best CB on the team and the Bucs played way better when he was on the field. You people are tools

  21. TampabayDJ Says:

@Boss – Are you still stalking our Bucs sites ? You’re the definition of fake fan ! You’re an AINTS fan .

  22. Conner50 Says:

If Dean doesn’t have a really good season this year he will be traded like Davis was simple as that. He makes way too much to not get interceptions and to miss a handful of games. Tampa over paid him to begin with but he can play really well when he’s healthy and the defense is clicking. Hopefully he has a stellar season and locks down the top receivers he faces

  23. adam from ny Says:

so it’s a no for dee delaney ?

  24. bob in valrico Says:

I think Dean can play better. I would recommend Many hours on the Jugs machine or let Trask throw to him and I’m not talking about perfect passes but
make him work to get better. Kind of like shagging flies.

  25. adam from ny Says:

i think it’ll be interesting to see what type of season dean has without davis in the room…

maybe those two were just bouncing off each other in the wrong way or something…

you never know…bags sometimes do change people, and they lose drive or focus…

dean is a very good corner…

let the man rock…if he so chooses

  26. Simeon4HOF Says:

On Defense the Bucs broke up some of the underachievers .. whatever their issues were. Dean needs to have a really good year or he’s gone and the Bucs most likely draft his replacement next year. 45 and 24 outta here, 35 needs to tighten up

  27. VOT Says:

Dude is hurt every other play, he’s brittle and not physical at all

His crazy long arms and make up speed have saved him multiple times

He better have an outstanding year or he’s the next one out the door

  28. Duane in Sanford Says:

He misses too many games. Someone was willing to trade for Davis. That tells you who the weaker player is.

    Good points.

    Q:”whatta ya goin’ do bro?”

A:”Takin’ a dive early bro, gotta extend the career”

  30. dmatt Says:

Dean had what looked to be a sure int in the playoff game against the Lions. He’s just too passive. He struggles with reactionary time and hands eye coordination. He has speed size n height but lacks consistency with its use. I realized just how fragile n injury prone Dean is in 2022 when he played 49ers wr Brandon Ayuk man to man at line of scrimmage n allowed Aiyuk to go around him for a long td pass. He didnt touch Aiyuk at the line of scrimmage n got injured on the play without making contact with wr or ball. smh

  31. JimBobBuc Says:

Trade Dean for an Edge. Maybe a draft day trade? Or, some team will lose their CB during the offseason and will be willing to take Dean. Hopefully we can get a good edge.

  32. Don’t make a scene 35 Says:

    Slow down
Does Dean have good hands ?
    Duh
Can Dean blanket cover any NFL receiver?
    Hell yes
a Licht and Bowles no what their doing
Is Dean a chess piece ?
    No
But he can cover anyone in man

  33. Don’t make a scene 35 Says:

    Trust it

  34. Notafannomore Says:

This the Bucs problem, always trying to get rid of quality players knowing damn well no free agents want to come to Tampa to play (great city, poorly run organization throughout history) and now you have to rely on a draft which is not or miss.

  35. Notafannomore Says:

    Hit or miss

  37. TampabayDJ Says:

@Notafannomore – Well NOT a fan , that was the worst comment of the year . Why are you even on this site ? Your not even a fan ! Take it to the AINTS.. Go Bucs

  38. FrontFour Says:

So McCullum replaced Dean vs the Lions in the playoffs and that was the game. Goff went right at him and McCullum got burned over and over again. Say what you want about him, but Dean can cover.
