Two Cornerback Legends Call Out Jamel Dean (Exclusive Video)

October 28th, 2023

Richard Sherman has harsh words for his good friend Jamel Dean — to his face. (Exclusive JoeBucsFan video)

Bucs cornerback Jamel Dean has zero interceptions in his last 19 starts.

He’s missed two pick-6 opportunities in the past two games and big names are now needling him publicly.

(Disclaimer: The “Joe” typing here is not the Joe who was pounding the table for the Bucs to re-sign Dean as a big-money free agent this past winter. This Joe thought Dean was a nice player totally unworthy of a fat, eight-figures-per-season contract.)

Enter legendary Bucs cornerback Rondé Barber. He can be heard on the Buccaneers Radio Network after the Lions game last Sunday wagging a finger at Dean for not intercepting a fourth-quarter pass from Desmond Ridder and taking it to the house. Dean didn’t pick the ball off at all,  and Barber delivered a short blast stating how he personally would have gotten a touchdown.

Next up was iconic cornerback Richard Sherman on Thursday night. Joe has video below of Sherman, Dean’s former Bucs teammate, scolding Dean on the field after the Bills game.

“Stop worrying about fuc*ing up and worry about making a play. You got the money! Make a play time.” Sherman shouted at Dean.

Joe has no doubt Sherman was referring to the Bills’ fourth-and-goal play from the Bucs’ 1 yard line in the second quarter. Dean batted down the pass but made a clean break on the ball and was in great position, but he didn’t even attempt to catch it.

At the time, Joe barked on X that somewhere Barber was screaming at the top of his lungs.

Because the Tampa Bay offense has major issues, the Bucs need Dean, Carlton Davis, Devin White and other expensive defensive playmakers to attack the football and make big plays. That’s what they’re paid to do — to change games.

As Barber has said many times, that’s the difference between good and great. And in the Bucs’ case, possibly the difference between 5-2 and 3-4.

  1. Couch Fan Says:

I remember reading awhile ago how the defense was told during practices not to pick off Brady. I wonder if they are still doing that and if so, that might just be a natural reaction now. They say you play how you practice and that would make some sense as to this article.

  2. Knucknbuc Says:

We pay 30 + million for this cb tandem. Lmao they barely get 2 picks a year and the problem is their playing way farther off this year so they aren’t even knocking down passes at a good rate.

  3. Steven007 Says:

When Dee Delaney and rookie Chris Izien, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, will gholston are among your interception leaders, you know there’s a problem.

  4. Rayjay1122 Says:

Yeah, I agree with Barber and Sherman on this. This Buccaneer ship is floating with no rudder and is taking on water. Theship is sinking, the BUCS are stinking and confidence in Bowles is shrinking.

  5. B Says:

But we knew that before we signed em. Both those guys go for passes defensed not picks. It is in their resume. They are not going to magically change by turning on the money hose. Also devil’s advocate- it was a great coverage switch and nobody would blink if they scored there because everyone thought they would.

  6. Lt. Dan Says:

“…Dean was a nice player totally unworthy of a fat, eight-figures-per-season contract.” EXACTLY.

  7. Bobby Says:

In January 2024, The Tampa Buccaneers introduce who as the next HC?

  8. AtlBuc Says:

I thought that was a pick 6 and then Dean sort of hesitated. Seems like he second guessed himself.

  9. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

I have almost as picks as they do.

  10. rickym Says:

Leslie Frazier as new HC ? Maybe he can talk an experienced OC to join him?
Not sure who else is out there.

  11. Texasbucsfan Says:

Poor coaching and limited talent are a recipe for a losing season.

  12. Architek Says:

It’s funny how we fans call out the organization on this stuff and we “don’t know spit”.

It appears the chickens have come home to roost.

  13. Sly Pirate Says:

I’d love Sherman as our new HC. He’d kill it.

  14. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Joe instead of calling out the player(Dean) , call out the GM that overspent like a drunken sailor on the Dean contract , the GM that gave us JTS and Logan Hall , the GM that has not brought in a quality RB-How about calling out JASON LICHT??????????????????

  15. Old School Bucs Says:

Great call out by sherman. This defense aint all that luke people want to say. They get gashed for big plays at critical times. This team lacks toughness and discipline. But as Joe likes to say this team is so much better without Brady! 🤣😭😂😭🤣😭😂😭🤣😭😂

  16. unbelievable Says:

I think the “defenses were told not to pick off Brady” was total nonsense.

Didn’t Winfield and Dean both have some picks during training camp / practices against him? Truth is neither Davis nor Dean have ever had high interception numbers. I think Lavonte David has probably had more picks in a season than either of them.

As for this year, what I see is both Dean and Davis playing incredibly tentative and soft. Preserving their bodies rather than sticking their nose in and getting dirty.

We’re paying over 30 MILLION dollars per year for 2 press corners that are playing soft zone over 70% of the time. #Genius

  17. Rican Says:

Definitely do not want Leslie Frazier as a head coach.

  18. realistic-optimistic Says:

I often see Dean/Davis in very tight coverage as the ball arrives, yet the pass ends up completed anyway. Situations where a good corner turns their head and snags the ball (like Barber or Sherman). So frustrating.

  19. Ed Says:

They are press corners, let them do what earned them those contracts. Our zones are always dependent on a switch and I think the opposing OCs figured out if they see Ryan Neal in their vision just throw the ball at anyone near him.
Nearly every passing touchdown the Bucs give up I see Neal runnning after them as they cross the goal line.

  20. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

The Bucs do have a funny way of massively rewarding selective mediocrity. I will never understand that. What gives?

  21. 1#bucsfan Says:

FOR REAL JOE. our defense is going to have to start scoring pts for us to win. Fumbles returned for TDs and pick-6s. Seriously if our defense puts up 14 and our offense 18 then we are sitting at 5-1 or maybe havnt lost a game. Our offense only getting 18 pts a game is going to loose us a lot of games.

  22. 1#bucsfan Says:

76 hall has turned out to be a gostlon 2.0. He had played good this year. Also you do t let talented DBs walk especially in a passing league. Not as easy to replace as you might think. Look at Zion last year. He’s playing a lot better this year but he’s still not a starter today. The market is why we had to pay a little more than he’s worth and honestly him and CD111 are only a few years removed from helping us win a Super Bowl. Quit crying about the GM. The best in Bucs history

  23. Drunkinybor Says:

Thank you 🙏 Richard Sherman. That is all

  24. Bucnjim Says:

The defense has way more issues than just Dean! Somehow they’ve been able to keep teams out of the end zone (mostly by luck) BUT the sustained drives make me sick to my stomach. Some people like to label it bend but don’t break…..I call it playing soft. A couple physical teams punched them in the mouth now the have their tail between their legs. I hate this style of play and now every NFC South team is looking to smack us in the head.

  25. SBucs Says:

Everyone means our GM Jason Blight.

  26. August 1976 Buc Says:

“Stop worrying about fuc*ing up and worry about making a play. You got the money! Make a play time.” Sherman shouted at Dean.

I have been saying for several years that Dean plays scared, and so many have defended him, well argue with Sherman.

When you play scared all the time, QB’s will always be glad to see you, and you giving them easy first down pick ups, because you are laying off by 10-15 yards.

Talent is not the issue, this is the 6 inches between the ears.

Seems strange because Dean is not bad at press coverage, but the fear just taakes that away.

  27. garro Says:

The NFL has insisted on changing the rules of real football so that all the over weight Americans who barely understand the basic rules and now the international bozos can watch high scoring games and be “more entertained”.

So crazy good QBs and anyone who can be a decent cover corner is now being paid crazy money. End of story! In our case it has been common for any DB in Bowles system to struggle for the first year. Soo…

    Go Bucs!

  28. garro Says:

Dean is better than he is playing this year. for sure.

    Go Bucs!

  29. Rich Says:

1st year Garro? I think not!!! They have zero…ZERO…ball skills. In addition this HC insists on his players work into his style of play instead of coaching to develop their natural skills. Good coaches adapt their methods to match the players skillsets….to insist that the players adapt to the coaches mindset, philosophy etc. is a sure recipe for failure.

  30. italnsd Says:

LOL, maybe they simply read all the scorn heaped in here by fans on SMB, the author of three of the most consequential interceptions in Bucs history (no SMB, no SB), and took note.
