Report: Mike Evans Was Told By Bucs They’d Make All Efforts To Keep Baker Mayfield

March 8th, 2024

The latest.

Never, ever question Mike Florio’s sources.

Partly because every NFL owner reads his site daily, partly because he has such a high-profile forum seen on an NFL broadcast partner’s interwebs, there are a whole lot of heavy hitters in the NFL who have Florio’s cell number.

That includes big-time agents, front office suits, coaches and yes, some owners. Remember when Florio first reported that then-Bucs quarterback Tom Brady was under contract with the Bucs but flirting with the Dolphins? Everybody and their brother screamed that Florio was full of it — until he wasn’t.

A few months after Florio’s initial story on the subject, the NFL released a tampering report that documented in black and white the Dolphins were in talks with Brady to try to get him to Miami. So Joe fully believes the following is dead-solid accurate.

Florio’s sources tipped him off that before he agreed to a deal that he will sign today, Mike Evans was given a strong pledge from the Bucs that they would pull out the stops to bring free agent quarterback Baker Mayfield back.

Receiver Mike Evans recently re-committed for two years; surely, that didn’t happen without Evans having some idea as to who the quarterback will be.

Indeed, per a league source, Evans got an assurance from the Bucs that they’ll do everything they can to keep Mayfield. Really, why pay Evans $20.5 million per year on a two-year deal if they don’t intend to have a viable quarterback?

Joe is starting to think the hangup between the Bucs and Mayfield is actually Kirk Cousins. One could argue Mayfield would be a better option than Cousins. Mayfield has won more playoff games and has a better playoff record. Mayfield is also much younger and, unlike Cousins who at 36 is coming off a blown Achilles, Mayfield is not damaged goods.

“This Joe” believes Cousins may set the market for Mayfield. So it very well could be Mayfield and his handlers want to see what Cousins pulls before they begin getting serious about a contract with the Bucs (or another team).

As Joe always types, all it takes is for one team to put more zeros on a check.

Baker, wtf dude?!? get real and get on board at a reasonable price or we’ll move tf on….simple as that!

  2. MadMax Says:

We were looking when we found you and Brady and we can start looking again!

  3. SteelStudBuc Says:

Don’t look now… but Buccaneers gonna be top 10 most important market teams next 6 to 8 years

  4. Delusional Intelligence Says:

The Great Corn Florio can kiss my Peter King.

  5. Rod Munch Says:

I have no doubt the Bucs said they’d make an effort to bring back Baker. But effort, and “we’ll do everything” are two different things. Business is business, and it really doesn’t matter who is throwing him the ball as long as they get it in his general area. I mean this is a guy who make Mike Glennon look like a fringe NFL starting QB, and took Baker from a two year stretch of being the worst QB in football, to being a middling starter!

“and it really doesn’t matter who is throwing him the ball as long as they get it in his general area”

So the real question is who do we trust? Mike Evans indication he thinks it DOES matters who throws him the ball or Rod Munschk?

Thers never been a simpler IQ test.

  7. Cesar Says:

Rod Munch? More like a butt munch! He’ll catch everything thrown around him? I like Mike Evans, but he dropped a few passes that hit him square on his hands. So don’t be an ingrate, shut the hell up and appreciate Baker.
As for “Mad Max” you’re just a Mad Idiot! Make some sense dude.

  8. Let em bake Says:

I think I said exactly this, joe, earlier today. Glad to help with yer copy😊

  9. Tony Marks Says:

“Mayfield has won more playoff games and has a better playoff record than Cousins. ”

IF as you theorize Cousins is an issue then you would also have to consider the additional possibility that its not just about the price of cousins but what happens with Cousins and Atlanta.

Btw there was a very short interview after the batting practice above and one question about his future. He said he would find out about the future within a week.

  10. Bucfan1988 Says:

    Ok, so check this out….

Article on Bucsreport.com said Mayfield’s agent dropped asking salary of $44 million a year 😳😳😳….
Said they were $20 million apart from the starters….
They are still quite a bit apart…

This came out then supposed Rick Stroud talked to Baker’s agent and he denied this was out there….

That asking price wouldn’t surprise me in the least cuz Mayfield now thinks she deserves a bigger contract than Daniel Jones RIDICULOUS contract that the G-men stupidly gave him last year….

We don’t know that’s going on, but something smells bad about it right now to me….

If this is really the case, STAND YOUR GROUND JASON LICHT!!!!
    Don’t give into this crap…

Captain Average can go hit free agency with his selfish request and suck the funds out of another team…..

Again what I loved & admired about Brady…He never chased the money….Team always came first and building the foundation around him…True GOAT!

  11. MadMax Says:

^1988, thats what we need….he has a chance here and we need money for others too….check your ego at the door, its not like you’re in line for affordable housing…geeze. Ive been saying 33.333 for 3 years….and if he cant take that then move on, fu!

  12. MadMax Says:

And I talked about bringing him here for 4-6 mill before we got him, its in the archives…

I dont know, at this point he’s looking like a diva and im almost ready to say f it.

  13. Bucfan1988 Says:

MadMax, I still think $33 milly a year is too high 🤷🏻‍♂️…
I like the 3 year deal though with like 2 years guaranteed maybe…

I’m thinking $27-$28 milly with some incentives to get Baker to $30 milly or so…..

To me, he hasn’t proven anything.
    Way too much inconsistency
He was on the cusp of being benched if they would have lost that 2nd Falcons game…. Pulled it out at the very end, and the Bucs were lucky….

He needs to be more appreciative about what Tampa is offering here.

  14. MadMax Says:

Spencer Rattler is looking pretty good right now….and the brass has met with him! They also met with Pratt.

  15. Bucfan1988 Says:

    Penix still has my eye….

The most accurate, deep ball, thrower of all of the QB’s…

Mike Evans would love him, lol

  16. MadMax Says:

Let him test free agency, go ahead. If they offer him more than 30, bye!

yeah, offer just came down from 33 to 30…thats how it goes, we play hardball too….go test that FA buddy 🙂

  17. GhostofBrady Says:

Man Kirk Cousins is the master at maximizing his dollars. The 35 year old recovering from an Achilles tear has made a whopping $185M in the last 6 years from Minnesota. The cap from 2018-2023 accumulatively has been $1179.1B (224.8, 208.2, 182.5, 198.2, 188.2, 177.2). That $185M is 15.69% of their cap. Normalized to 2024 cap of $255.4M, that is $40M per year. Imagine paying a QB $40M for the next 6 years most of it guaranteed for a single playoff victory and then asking for a raise. Minnesota offered Cousins that $40M and no deal. Cousins wants $45M X 2 years guaranteed. It’s up to the Market to determine whether Cousins gets something close to that. Needy coaches that have a shorter line to show success these days and hungry teams that believe they are built to win now might be in on it.

Odell Beckham got a $15M because he was the missing link to the Raven’s SB hopes. He delivered 565 yards, 3 TDs and did little in the playoffs as the Ravens were 1 and done. Teams that think they are close will swing for the fences. No bigger swing then the QB.

Baker’s had 2 playoff victories in the last 4 years. His handlers are making sure he maximizes his dollars towards those needy on the fringe teams. $40M a year is not far-fetched considering Baker is much younger, not coming off injury and had better playoff success in much more difficult situations. And probably asking for $5M less per year than Cousins.

If this is the market reality, we can only hope Baker and Licht can compromise for long-term familiarity and fairness with respect to the market. To Baker, that probably means a 3 years guarantee not a 2 years. Something Atlanta or Minnesota might be willing to do. It would suck if we let Baker go and he balls for the next 3 years. And we end up with Fields, Trask or JJ McCarthy. I’ve been saying 4 years $160M with $100-105M guaranteed. It’s up to Licht on whether he believes in Baker or not to pay him 3 years.

  18. Saskbucs Says:

Heard Baker and his team are using the 40 Jones gets in NYG but as a counterpoint, Stafford and Prescott make around 40 as well. I think JL just needs to tell Bakers team, tell us what ATL offers and we will go from there. I don’t buy any other teams as real suitors that Baker would go for unless the money is 10+ million per more.

33-37 million for 3-4 years if you can reasonably cut bait after 2 is well worth our time and I can’t believe its not done yet. Cousins is the only acceptable back-up plan. If both fell through, need to sign a Minshew or Brissett and draft Penix if he gets there.

  19. sasquatch Says:

Mayfield is clearly the best option for the Bucs if they want to win this year.

  20. Allbuccedup Says:

Baker Baker Baker either sign or leave could care less. I am ready to turn over another rock.

  21. HC Grover Says:

A million aint what it used to be.

  22. MadMax Says:

Cesar, Ive made a lot of sense, and the Bucs a lot of cents around here “dude” for many years now….you dont know me, must be new, so i’ll give you a pass.

  23. GhostofBrady Says:

    Saskbucs Says:
“Cousins is the only acceptable back-up plan. If both fell through, need to sign a Minshew or Brissett and draft Penix if he gets there.”

How much would you pay Cousins? He just said no to Minnesota for $40M annually. Cousins wants $45M X 2 years guaranteed. I guess Cousins $90M guaranteed for 2 years is better than Baker for 3 years at $105M guaranteed?

Man if Cousins and Baker are at Atlanta and Minnesota and we got Trask, Minshew or the 4th+ best rookie QB in the draft, we are ***curse word*** . We might as well tank. Ack, that would squander Mike Evans last two HOF years.

Come on Baker and Licht, don’t do that to Evans.

  24. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Kyle Trask has the highest ceiling

  25. Hodad Says:

Evans gave the Bucs a good deal. It was so good it wasn’t take it now, or leave it. So Mike could’ve waited to sign, and made sure Baker got signed. He didn’t. Mike did what was best for Mike, like Baker will do what’s best for him, and of course, the Bucs gotta do right by the Bucs. It’ll get worked out, or it won’t. Mike got his, and if I had to bet he’ll get his 1000 yards this year even if Minchew, or Trask are throwing him the rock.

  26. Maxxedbuc Says:

Looking at the market for QB, apparently the need is there for Baker. This is all about business for team Baker and the Bucs. The points made in this article are all logical from different perspectives, as we get to the point at hand. But when we think about this from a what have you done for me lately standpoint compared to what’s the ceiling or reality of what to expect from signing Baker, it’s fair to everyone to let Baker go out and test the market. Basically meaning bye Baker if he’s all about the Benjamin.

Because based on the above comments and my own, we know that Baker is a gamer, at times. And we know that one year rarely dictates what next year will bring. So the question I pose for us to consider is, are we building an NFC South winning team or a team with the potential to win another SB?

Because if Baker is not the missing piece for us to have a realistic super bowl run over the period of his contract, compared to the financial limitations he’d put the team in while he’s a Buc, it’s just not worth putting all the eggs in one basket to satisfy either the moment or our stud receiver.

Now keep in mind, the two times that the Bucs went all in or nothing, we’ve won the big dance (with J. Gruden and with the GOAT!). Also, consider the fact that JL has managed to get the most out of the draft and a collection of fair market players through free agency and the draft (the last three seasons) and still win the division.

    Go Bucs

  27. MadMax Says:

^Baker shows promise….i think he’s coming into his own now….and with a better O line, we’ll see more accomplishments like last season….

but he and his agent needs to get their head out of where the sun doesnt shine! Its still a risk…yes, one year, shows some promise….and he’s def a gamer…he killed that white board while going through the draft and thats why browns took him 1 overall…thats stuff you cant teach

you also cant teach humility and understanding where this path of life has blessed you. His best deal will happen here and the sooner he realizes that, the better of ALL of us will be.

    But thats on him now.

  28. ATLBUC Says:

That doesn’t sound very promising “we’ll do all we can”! In other news: On Tuesday, Tampa Bay did exactly that as they announced the signings of both WR Deven Thompkins and OT Brandon Walton to one-year deals.

  29. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I hope the glazers do not go full on ‘culverhouse’ on us and blow this mayfield negotiation priocess on us. Time will tell and It may take another generation to undo this one, and i aint got another generation in me; so yes having lived in these here parts for the last 54 im concerned…. A lot.

Really? When Mike agreed to come back Trask is the only QB on the roster and bringing BM back is not written in his contract

  33. BakerFan Says:

The Glazers and Licht are of a tribe that think they can be cheap skates and pinch pennies for people to chose the Bucs. Was really surprised that Evans signed for what he got, he must of realize the market was not going to pay him that much more and assurances had to be made to him.

Baker will test the market come Monday and may get big numbers or may come groveling back to the tribe for their offer. Who knows, I don’t think anyone does at this time, not Baker, not Baker’s agent, not the Tribe or anyone else. But like a lot of people I am becoming fatigued reading about this qb and what will happen

  34. NYbucsfan Says:

He is not worth 40 mil. That would be dumb to pay that kind of money for Mayfield. I know Joe is madly in love with Mayfield but let’s not forget the clunkers he also put on tape last year.

    ……
Texas does not have it either but the Texans passed. I just find it hard to believe more we’re not interested. I think it was due to a strong draft for WR and his age.

  39. lanshark Says:

    @ATLBuc and @BakerFan:

Taxes in the NFL don’t quite work like that. The IRS has decided that the home stadium for each game is their ‘workplace’. So, if you play in Cincy for one game, you pay Cincy taxes for that game. IF you play at RayJay, you pay Tampa Bay taxes, etc. So, the ‘tax free’ part only applies to about half the games. Still significant, but not the same as all of your play is tax free.

  40. Show Me the TDs Says:

The Love, yearning and obsession of some Bucs fans for our starting mediocre 9-8 QB is astounding. He’s ready to take all the money and leave very little for his teammates. It appears that Mayfield is who I thought he was.

  41. Bucben61 Says:

    Quarterback
    Typical Salary — QB: $31,333,333

Quarterback is obviously the highest-paid position in the NFL, and the market for a starting QB is one of the more complex markets in the league, as there are clear cutoffs depending on whether a player is seen as a star, a longtime franchise starter, or a spot starter. There are 7 quarterbacks making $40 MM a year or more (Rodgers, Watson, Mahomes, Allen, Carr, Prescott, and Stafford), and all except one has signed a contract extension in 2021 or 2022. There are 7 quarterbacks making between $25 MM and $40 MM, and the vast majority of the other starters in the NFL are on their rookie contracts. Teams have responded to the sky-high QB market by drafting 1 first-round quarterback in 2022 and 5 first-round quarterbacks in 2021. Essentially, the market will pay any quarterback it sees as a legitimate starting option $30 MM or more, and there is a sharp cliff below that point

Atlbuc….$15m a year….maybe you shouldn’t be involved in this conversation…it’s way over your head

    @ATLBuc and @BakerFan:

I did realize that. I knew several years ago players got exempted from paying city taxes when in other cities. This May of changed though. It goes beyond income tax. My sister in law works for an attorney that represents the NFL on Workers Compensation. This is a big big mess. California has lucrative worker compensation packages so most players want to claim injuries occur in CA. A lot of crazy stuff happens when making claims.

  43. Pewter Power Says:

At some point baker has to open it and stop getting all the credit he gets as if he’s waiting on cousins or we’re waiting for the Bucs.

Anyone thinking they haven’t been working on this before the playoffs started is a fool. They already had a number in mind and I’m sure he knows that number. He just wants to test free agency to see what he can get or try to drive the price up. Stop blaming the Bucs instead of baker

  44. Robbie Says:

That was a promise to try not a promise they are signing him, lol so yall keep reading more into it then is really there!!

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

They are simply setting the value by what the legal tampering period reveals.

I believe Baker wants a done deal before free agency officially starts. That he wants to remain a Buc. His agent is probably just delaying it to figure out the value.

Mayfield has gained fans in Tampa. If he goes elsewhere he’d have to prove himself all over again. If he is smart and believes in himself, he’ll know taking a reasonable amount now will help the team improve around him and increase his value on the next contract.

So I predict a deal will be announced just before free agency.

Atlbuc….$15m a year….maybe you shouldn’t be involved in this conversation…it’s way over your head.

Bucben61 get off of your high horse 15M is a steal for a mediocre QB who barely got us to the playoffs. Let him walk and draft another QB simple. Evans is a stud no matter whose throwing the ball. Hed love Spencer Rattler or Mike Penix. If we give Baker more than 25M Im gonna come back and see if youre still talking crazy after the falcons or saints eliminate us from making the playoffs like the nearly did this year. Defense saved us.

  47. BucU Says:

Bonzai I concur wholeheartedly. I have ZERO concerns about resigning Baker.
He’s found a home for the first time. Most fans love him here. ALL the players love him and the front office loves him.
Good post man. There is no way he wants to start all this over again moving to a new city and team.

  48. Levin Says:

“Evans got an assurance from the Bucs that they’ll do everything they can to keep Mayfield.”

WHAT? I learned from reading this venerable website that Baker is elite and Evans wanted to play with an elite quarterback – not Kyle Trask – and then Evans signed without Baker being signed and Trask being the only signed quarterback. LMAO. You can’t make this shït up.

  49. BA’s Ref Pen Says:

  52. Zeke Says:

Why is Baker Mayfield batting in the video left-handed????

  53. Buccos Says:

We should re-sign Baker for $40mm a year or less if possible. If he won’t accept this offer then it is next man up and Trask is QB1. I have no doubt that Evans would still get his 1000 yards with Trask throwing him the ball. So make every effort to re-sign Mayfield but if he is stuck on $44mm a year then cut bait and promote Trask and draft Penix or McCarthy

I’ve been a Bucs fan since Doug Williams and the Selmon brothers were rocking the Creamsicle colors. I am definitely a Mike fan. He is the epitome of a class act elite WR. Not like some of these “watch me” “give me the ball” guys. Mike will get his 1000 yards. If you’ve got Lavonte David signed and some other pieces for our defense before we start screwing around spending all of our money on them quarterback that is going to end up being a washout there’s plenty of other quarterbacks and free agency and there’s rookies I just he’s not worth the money that he wants like he’s been in the league for what six seven years and his best year was last year come on guys he’s not even close to being an elite quarterback we cannot give him that much money or the Buccaneers are doomed for like 4 or 5 years

  69. Go bucs Smokey Says:

Life as a Buc fan they never fail to raise your blood pressure and have you bitting your fingernails during the season and off season

  70. White Tiger Says:

With Pennix, you only have to be worried if you run up against a defense as good as the university of Michigan….which is pretty much EVERY defense we’ll face in 2024…and beyond…so maybe we can call him Buzz Lightyear, or Fameous 2.0..

    Pennix = hard pass.
