Buccaneers Re-Sign Baker Mayfield

March 10th, 2024

UPDATED 5:30 p.m.: Time to break the Big Storm beer out of the refrigerator!

The Buccaneers have their Pro Bowl quarterback returning to the team for the 2024 season and beyond. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Mayfield will sign a three-year contract worth a maximum of $115 million with incentives and $50 million guaranteed.

That’s not a ton of money at all for a quality starter under 30 — Mayfield turns 29 next month — and those incentives might be difficult to achieve. Contract details will flow later or tomorrow. It smells like the Bucs got Mayfield for $100 million over three years with room for him to cash in more if he and the team kick ass. (Rapoport has since updated that it is, in fact, $100 million over three years plus incentives).

Joe is so happy. Life without a quality starting quarterback is brutal. Remember, in the playoffs, Mayfield had 686 passing yards and six touchdowns.

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht gambling by potentially exposing Mayfield to free agency paid off. It never happened. So the Bucs locked up their QB and star wide receiver while locking down their stud safety, Antoine Winfied, with the franchise tag.

As former agent Joel Corry detailed was likely in late January, Mayfield got Derek Carr kind of money with an Ulta gift card to make it all look prettier.

Next up, iconic Bucs linebacker Lavonte David!

  2. CalltheSaltTruck Says:

Whooooo! Let’s go. Glad Bake got paid, it’s a good deal for both sides. Kept Mike, kept Winfield, just need LVD back and a solid draft (and maybe a long-term deal for Wirfs).

  3. Stewart Brew Says:

    Finally!

  4. Zzbucs Says:

    Makes sense.
Seems to me JL didn’t oberpay.

    Good Job!!!

  5. Rob in Land O' Lakes Says:

Smart move by both sides. $50 million is the operative number that really only has the team on the hook for 2 years. Good move for Baker as well. His stock will never be higher.

  6. Let em bake Says:

Congrats. Not as much as I thought, but glad both parties got it done. Time to extend Wirfs😊

  7. Jeffs grandpa Says:

    Good deal for both sides

  8. Bucs Chump Says:

    Good News!!

  9. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Wooo! He might finish his career with all the franchise records

  10. agnosticbuc Says:

    BOOM!

3 years @ $115 is basically the tag number.

    Great job JL. LFG!

  11. ocala Says:

    Great job Jason Licht!!!

  12. Chrisonthecape Says:

I’m ok with it, but would any other team have paid that for him? I’m not so sure.

  13. Barbosa Says:

Excellent. Seeing the transition from bone head ownership and a bottom tier franchise to a consistent competitive franchise with a chance to win is awesome.

    Your response made mine

  15. Fansince76 Says:

Fark yea!! We got our guy!! top 15 QB our offense will be formidable if we can secure a quality center and guard.

  16. Esteban85 Says:

    Go Bucs

  17. DoooshLaRue Says:

Now sign LVD, Chase and go get Bobby Wagner.

  18. Marine Buc Says:

I’ve been saying for months now – 3 years $90M plus incentives with $45M guaranteed.

Bucs can get out after 2 seasons with limited cap damage.

    Good move for both sides.

There is no way the Bucs were going to pay $40-$50M per season mostly guaranteed.

You fools are tools. Thank goodness you are not our GM.

    LOL!!!!!!

  19. #99 the big fella Says:

Now the genius guys yesterday predicting that he was gone can cry all night now

  20. ATLBUC Says:

    DAMN! DAMN! DAMN!!

  21. Tbbucs3 Says:

Lets go! Look away Rod Munch!

The Trask brigade is officially out of business

  22. Panhandle Buc Says:

I originally predicted this contract out of hope and was worried he would command over $40M with other teams driving the price up! This was BEST case scenario!!! Love the TEAM friendly deal!

  23. MP Says:

Well guys, March 10th, 2024. Day one of lost decade two

  24. Tony marks Says:

Frankly he did give a bit of a discount but comes in the 30 – 35 window reasonable people were projectong. Very good deal.

  25. agnosticbuc Says:

Trask will be traded for a 7th rounder

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Tag number was $36m, right?

This is $33.3M per year, $15m incentives.

I find it acceptable. We can cut bait next year if needed without having a hug cap hit.

  27. BUCman Says:

Fair deal for both sides. If he makes half of the incentives he will earn an average just under 36m per year. Good job Jason and company. Now David and McLaughlin need to be signed along with working on extensions for Winfield and Wirfs. Signing Whitehead would be icing on the cake!!

  28. Truth be Told Says:

As predicted would never leave a good thing for everyone. This guarantees the Bucs will be the cream of the South again. Now Pass Rush Pass Rush. Pass Rush.

  29. Richard Dickson Says:

Good deal, doesn’t kill us if he flames out, gives us somewhere to go for an extension if he keeps producing.

  30. Tbbucs3 Says:

“Trask will be traded for a 7th rounder“

7th rounder and a hot dog

  31. Joseph C Simmons Says:

I’m pretty happy. Mayfield won’t carry a bad team on his shoulders the way Brady did his last couple of years in New England, but if he has good talent and a good system around him, he’s a heck of a QB.

I judge a QB by how I feel when the offense is lining up on 3rd and sevenish. Do I have confidence we’ll move the chains? With Brady, I felt good. WIth Jeff Garcia and Brad Johnson, I felt good. With, say, Trent Dilfer, I felt like “get the punt team ready”.

With Baker, I feel like the chances are better than 50-50. Even when the defense knows it’s a pass, the ends are rushing and everything, I feel like Mayfield will make the right read and throw it accurately, and if there’s no one open immediatley he has enough athleticism and knack for making things happen that we’ll get the first down.

    GO BUCS!

  32. BucsFan81 Says:

Kind of over paid. Would have liked to see 3 years 75 million with incentives up to 100 million. 50 million guaranteed

  33. Buc You Says:

    Great job Tampa Bay!

  34. LongSeason Says:

Give credit to Jason Licht for building a winning culture making Tampa Bay a place great players want to come to and stay at.
Need Lavonte signed, Tristen extended, Chase McLaughlin resigned. Love to see AWJ get a long term deal, too. Love to see Zach Triner resigned because he has been a great long snapper.
Bucco Bruce been sayin’ “You ain’t going nowhere. 👉😀 You ain’t going nowhere. 👉😀 You ain’t going nowhere. 👉😀 You ain’t going nowhere. 👉😀 You ain’t going nowhere. 👉😀 You ain’t going nowhere.” 👉😀
    LFG
    GO BUCS!

  35. agnosticbuc Says:

it’s closer to $40 mill per year

unless you don’t want him to ball out

  36. Panhandle Buc Says:

Anyone saying this contract is too high isn’t paying to attention to comparable salaries and increase EVERY damn year! Watch what Cousins gets!!!

  37. Popcorn Mike Says:

Sounds like a good deal for both side. I will wait til I see and hear more details The new contract seems to be in line with what myself, many Bucs fans and the more accurate NFL talking heads at around $32 to $34 mil a year. Good deal, Good deal

  38. Irish Laughter Says:

Sorry Joe, I told you so. It was never in doubt and you can bank my euros on that. Let’s go Baker, lets go Bucks and this season will be our third Super Bowl. Keeping it real in Ireland.

  39. ModHairKen Says:

Boss, you can go find the Falcons site. They don’t have Baker and they need some more whiners.

  40. Buchen61 Says:

Great day for Tampa Bay buc fans¡!!!!!!!!

I feel like lighting a cigar

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    agnosticbuc Says:
“Trask will be traded for a 7th rounder”

We still need a backup. No reason to trade him.

  42. ModHairKen Says:

MP, you’re a closet Saints fan anyhow. Go get cozy with Carr and Jameis.

  43. agnosticbuc Says:

now serving crow for rod…come get you some

  44. Joshua porter Says:

All it cost was dean or Davis……

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

  46. dbbuc711 Says:

    Glad this is done.

  49. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

That seems to be a fair deal for both sides. Nice job Licht!

  50. Keystone state fan Says:

    Great signing

  51. Miller5252 Says:

Great to hear! Got him signed without doing some crazy expensive deal. Now go give David the expensive contract he’s always deserved! Haha all seriousness David does deserve an end of career contract. Pay the man good and let him choose when he’s done. $10-12 a year fully guaranteed.

  52. Capt.Tim Says:

Congrats Baker Mayfield. Tampa Bays Franchise Qb !
Baker got his Bag, Jason Licht got him cheaper than I expected- and before the Free Agency mad house tomorrow!

Great day to be a Bucs Fan!

Breaking out a drink of the good stuff! Good times!

  53. BucFanDMV Says:

Glad to see this put to rest now we can focus on the off season … I wonder what is the over and under he plays 16 games now that he has been paid???

  54. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Tony

Does this mean you will remain a Tampa Bay Buc fan?

So glad your boy came to his senses and realized he was not “elite” and signed a team friendly deal.

Baker was smart not to test free agency. He would have been very disappointed.

  55. Boss Says:

nothing like saddling the team with another 3 years and 113 million to a guy with one decent year in a crap fest division. All while bever trying your draft pick that studied under the GOAT QB.

    facepalm

  56. Paratrooper Buc Says:

It’s a good deal. There are worse QBs making more than 33-35 million a year (Jones in NY for example). If Baker has a better year with an improved OLine and hits his incentives then in 2 years he can push for a better contract. If he flails then he is gone. 40-50 was always way too much and 25 was too low. I was thinking 30-35 and I hope this allowed Bucs the ability to improve the team. Looking forward to what else we do in FA and the draft.

  57. Rusty Shackleford Says:

How much money is left ? Can the Bucs resign David and McLaughlin ? If yes, will there will any money left over to sign anyone else from other teams ? Hassan Reddick ?

  58. Gipper Says:

Happy for all. Baker will be only 32 when this contract expires and the Bucs will have been to at least one Super Bowl by then. At 32 when this contract expires, Baker will still be younger than Cousins is now. If he gets the O line and tight end that all successful QB’s need (think Kelce at KC, Gronk at NE and TB), it will be fun watching the team the next several years.
The downside will be the haters complaining about EVERY incompletion and interception. There will be far more good than bad and this team with just a little more tweaking will be ultra competitive.

  59. Rusty Shackleford Says:

How much money is left ? Can the Bucs resign David and McLaughlin ? If yes, will there will any money left over to sign anyone else from other teams ?

  60. mark2001 Says:

I said earlier today 35 mil a year plus incentives. Thanks for listening, Jason. As if he listened to any of us. LOL

  61. Scott Says:

Great job Jason Licht! Always can be trusted operating the bucs. All the negativity over this signing, great deal for a quality quarterback

  62. D Cone Says:

Does not extend past Bowles contract with basically 30 mill 1st year and a second year out if the bottom caves.

New Seattle Coaching is sure not talking like they are committed to the Geno Experiment. We’ll see.

My heads not exploding but I’m still pretty sure he’s not the Guy.

  63. Todd Rolls Says:

Good deal Jason Licht your the man

  64. Critmark Says:

Given market rates, this was a good deal for the Bucs.

It seems like there are a lot of better than average players hitting FA this year. Let JL put his skills to work to fill in a couple of holes between that and the draft, and the Bucs are good.

ME, AWJ (sill work to do long-term but in for 2024), now Baker, a solid start to the off season!

  65. Buddha Says:

I like the guy. Toughest nails. Still room to grow? It’s not my money and I trust Licht.

“There is no way the Bucs were going to pay $40-$50M per season mostly guaranteed.”

Theres no legit evidence that Baker EVER was pushing for over 40 mil and he came right in where I said was a reasonable offer.

lol You lost – You and Rod go take your Wilson and Minshew plan and go fish.

  67. D Cone Says:

Have to wait on Florio tomorrow to get the facts out there.
Top 10 will be tougher with guys like Burrow, Herbert, Rodgers and Cousins back in the mix. Not to mention 4 QB’s leaving college that might even be better.

Stay healthy and get those 70% of the snaps.

  68. White Tiger Says:

    #LETSGO!!

Leaves excellent cap space for 2024 – now on to extend Wirffs, which will create some room to also sign LVD & Money McLaughlin – and maybe sneak a FA/Edge!!!

Then, IN TO THE DRAFT BABY!!

Great deal, team friendly, And gives us the best chance for WINS!!

  69. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Tony

“Theres no legit evidence that Baker EVER was pushing for over 40 mil”

Maybe not but there were goofballs on here saying 5 years $250M fully guaranteed.

And lets not forget – you have been calling Baker Mayfield an “elite” QB this entire time.

Give me a break bro – don’t try to run and hide from your past statements.

Be a man for once and just admit you were wrong.

  70. WyomingJoe Says:

Glad Baker will be back. It’s a fair deal for the Bucs. I’m certain that Licht would be more than happy to renegotiate his contract after he balls out the next two years!

I’m telling you that he hasn’t reached his ceiling yet.

And (with all sincerity), I hope that Trask gets traded so that he could compete for a starting job. If I were Licht, I’d make that happen.

  71. Rod Munch Says:

That’s not too bad – only $20m on the books for next year if Baker falls off a cliff.

Really though, if Baker does revert back to being a bust, that means Bowles is getting fired anyways, and you’re doing a rebuild, so I guess that money doesn’t matter too much.

I think Licht protected himself from getting fired if Baker busts – the $30m this year is right in expectations for what I thought he’d get ($27-30m), and the number next year is higher than I’d personally like, but not crippling.

Overall, lets just hope Baker can improve on last year, or at least not fall off that much.

Now we just have to hope the Falcons do something really dumb at QB.

Don’t care never heard me say that and Ya know it

“And lets not forget – you have been calling Baker Mayfield an “elite”

Take it up with Mike Evans

    “Baker is elite.”

    — Mike Evans, professional WR that played with Tom Brady

“”Baker’s a hell of a player and he showed everybody that he’s criminally underrated.”

    – Mike evans

Whats good enough for mike to call ELITE is good enough for me Brah 🙂

Why so salty dude? REAL buc fans are celebrating.

    Great job Jason!

Good for you Baker, welcome back bro….you just dont know the F ive been going through with this…..i was already saying bye lol.

    This is awesome!

  75. BigMacAttack Says:

This is great deal for both Team and Player. The Bucs also appear to have the least dead cap money of all 32 teams.

  76. Jack Clark Says:

Jesus Christ, $38 million dollars a year for an average at best quarterback? Tom Brady was the greatest quarterback of all time and he only got paid $25 million dollars a year

  77. WyomingJoe Says:

This is open to anyone (including the Joe’s), and I’m serious. Provide me with your definition of what an “elite” QB is.

  78. HeavyE Says:

Licht and the Glazers are COMPLETE IDIOTS AND FOOLS!!! We couldn’t pay Mike this kind of money? for over 10yrs of Complete Dominance, but this one year wonder? Oh I guess it’s because he’ —————!

  79. DBS Says:

So much for the he gome. crowd. You were wrong again.

  80. Rod Munch Says:

If you believe Adam Schefter, it’s a straight 30 all guaranteed / 30 with 20 guaranteed / and 40 with no guarantees, with $15 in incentives.

If they’re truly taking the full $30m hit on this years cap, then it means they’re going to have to make a number of moves. I’m going to guess that the contract turns out to be a lot more complex with a ton of void years and deferred salary.

As a non-Baker Boi, I really don’t hate this deal – it’s not as bad as I was expecting, and hopefully we find out in a few days, like with Evans deal, it’s actually less than reported. Agents love to roll out big numbers for the PR statement, so hopefully this follows that trend.

Regardless, since Baker is back, it’s a reset from me. Hopefully he breaks out and has a good year (not a Baker Boi good year, but a real one) and the contract looks like bargain.

  81. Montana Says:

Trask and 30 million to spend on other players would have made for a better team.

  82. covertwo22 Says:

    uff!
Hopefully there’s enough left over to sign LVD, a center, kicker and a safety. Probably won’t be able to get a top tier OLB in free agency and get one in the 1st Rnd.

  83. David Says:

Awesome! I wish they would’ve made it for about 5 years, but this is great. He is guaranteed to be there through the end of Evan’s career. After Evan signed a two year deal my initial thought was – do not be surprised if they extend for a 3rd year after next year to spread the wealth because he’s got 3 good years left.

As for BOSS and everyone else on here who makes a negative comment… Go watch women’s softball because you obviously don’t know a damn thing about football.
Now sign LVD and draft that center out of Oregon.

  84. Usfbucs Says:

There’s no reason for the Bucs to trade Trask. It’s crazy how much some here hate a guy who’s done nothing wrong.

  85. Allbuccedup Says:

No need to draft a quarterback hopefully this will be a good thing and doesn’t backfire.

  86. Usedtocould Says:

Good. Now draft a center, guard and tight end. In that order.

  87. Murph Says:

Baker told Schefter he loves Coach Bowles and the staff. Great job coaches.

  88. Duane in Sanford Says:

This is open to anyone (including the Joe’s), and I’m serious. Provide me with your definition of what an “elite” QB is.

    ^^^^
An elite quarterback is a top 5 quarterback. Objective measurements for being an elite quarterback can include total passing yards, total passing touchdowns, total regular season wins, total playoff wins, and total Super Bowl wins

  90. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Rod

“I’m going to guess that the contract turns out to be a lot more complex with a ton of void years and deferred salary.”

    I agree.

Hopefully the cap hit for 2024 will be @ $15-$20M with 2-3 void years added to the back-end of the deal in order to allow the Bucs a little wiggle room this season.

Also look for a new deal for Wirfs and a restructure for Godwin and Vea that will allow for more cap space.

  91. David Says:

People worried about the money… Do you have any idea what the salary cap is now and what it’s going to next year?
You’d rather be a 5 win team with Trask or draft a rookie and go backwards for 2 years? Ridiculous. Thank God for LIGHT and not you people.

I was ready to move forward with a rookie quarterback… Knowing full well that means don’t expect the playoffs for about 2-3 years, but I actually watched the games saw Mayfield progress and realized they don’t need to draft a rookie, they got their guy for the next five or six years.

Anyway, great day for Buccaneers fans and it’ll be even better when LVD signs. And if you are sitting there, banging the table for Trask… Seriously, take up watching girls softball.

  92. HeavyE Says:

More tipped balls, more bad throws, more of taking unnecessary sacks and more not making the correct throws for first downs and no more, can’t audible….. GREAT JOB, J licht……….are You Kidding me??????

  93. Bucs since 76 Says:

It’s a great deal for both sides. I sure his cap hit this year will be team friendly. I sure the Bucs will keep Trask and draft a QB in the late rounds. Also, Baker’s wife probably didn’t want to move again as she is going to have a baby in the near future. Plus Baker really likes his teammates here and is having fun playing football again.

  94. Biggun Says:

BOOM… Now lets get dangerous and stake another SB…

  95. geno711 Says:

Based on his new contract, Baker Mayfield is now being paid as the 16th highest QB in terms of average salary per year at $33.3M/year with 50% guaranteed.

To all the guys saying he was average, I guess that what the contract showed.

To all the guys saying he was elite. Guess what, the contract does not show that.

  96. Toad Bowels Says:

    Great job Mike and Jackie!

  97. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

    Relief.

  98. Rod Munch Says:

Marine Buc – personally I’d take a bigger hit this year, since I assume Baker will bust, and I’d rather have as little cap hit next year as possible so they can easily cut him. But, the team is doing what they’re going to do, so I’m just going to hope Baker can get better and more consistent.

Really if Baker can just not have so many bad games, that would go a long ways towards him improving. But the good news is the Bucs aren’t committed long term, that was key to me, and the deal isn’t crippling.

Also, who knows, maybe some clicks with Baker, maybe playing with Evans, Godwin, Palmer for another year something clicks and his downfield accuracy gets a lot better. He’s in the NFC South so he doesn’t really need to be a top 10, or even top 15 QB, he just needs to be consistent and that might be good enough to sneak into the playoffs once again.

In any case it’s all over for this offseason in terms of who the QB is, so I honestly hope he does well.

  99. All_da_way Says:

That is a good deal and it gives the Bucs flexibility to re-sign their own UFA and to add a few.

    VALID AND FAIR point

Kyle has handed himself with nothing but class and as an olive branch to trask fans

Your guy should see some minutes this year. Baker plays in a way that he is now going to have to learn to rein in but probably won’t learn fast enough plus the investment also means Bowles should NOT be having Baker out there when he clearly should not be.

He needs to be ready this season . I think Trask’s time will come in 2024 and I will be cheerleading that it does.

  102. Show Me the TDs Says:

    Mediocrity here we come!

  103. Davyboy Says:

  104. agnosticbuc Says:

  105. Usfbucs Says:

We hope not Tony. We want all of our starters to be healthy all season long.

  106. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Rod

“I’m just going to hope Baker can get better and more consistent.”

Same here but the Bucs need to get better at protecting Baker – especially improving our interior offensive line. We had the worst LG, C and RG in the NFL last season.

Baker can handle pressure off tackle but when it comes from the middle it destroys the play completely.

Bucs need to spend a little money and grab a free agent guard/center then spend a high draft pick on another…

  107. Usfbucs Says:

@Davyboy – he does appear to have signed a team friendly deal. It tells me that Baker is more interested in winning the big game than just winning regular season games.

I hope the Bucs go all in with draft picks and FAs to put us in another SB window.I would have all the draft picks this year and next available to trade to snag a key player or to trade up in the draft this year to get the players we need.

  108. Rover Says:

    Go Bucs!

  109. Defense Rules Says:

Jl’s now got 3 in the bag PRIOR to the start of free agency (Evans, Winfield & Mayfield). Sure would be nice to get LVD & McLaughlin done also, plus get Wirfs on a new contract.

Far as Baker’s contract details go, it’s ALL speculation at this point. Mike Evans contract turned out to be substantially more team-friendly once we got all the details. Got a hunch Baker’s still turn out to be the same.

  110. Davyboy Says:

  113. D Cone Says:

Didn’t have to test the Markey. Agent at the Combine mentioned Daniel Jones and everyone smiled and said have a nice day.

Didn’t want to risk Licht saying we live in a different world than we did two days ago when he didn’t sign before Weds.

4 million in incentives this year. Next contract is probably close to that.
12 million in incentives if he plays lights out and Tampa does well for 3 seasons.

103/3 is basically 34.4 plus incentives. Guarantee of 1.5 seasons tells me 9-8 won’t be good enough going forward. For him or Bowles.

  114. Rod Munch Says:

Marine Buc – I think the Bucs can improve on the line by just getting a center, via FA or the draft. But if you can move Hainsey back to guard, where I think he’s better, that would go a long ways. Also, I expect Cody to report to camp being a lot stronger, and that will go a long ways toward helping him as he seemed to know what he was doing, but just wasn’t powerful enough – which is common with lineman coming from small schools.

Also Luke and Wirfs will have a year under their belt at a new position.

Really, the line could take quite a leap next year – and they weren’t awful, they just weren’t great like we got used to them being. But they could certainly step up and that will hopefully help Baker.

  115. Trask To The Future Says:

Awesome. I look forward to many more 170 yard passing games and very little scoring.

  116. RBUC Says:

    @Wyoming Joe
In my opinion the league has only 3 Elite QBs! They are Patrick Maholmes, Mathew Stafford, and Joe Burrow. So what distinguish these 3 elite players is at anytime in the game REGARDLESS of the receiver talent on their team or the opponents defensive prowess they have the ability to put the team on their shoulders and SCORE!!! Quarterbacks that aren’t as talented MUST have elite receivers to accomplish the same things!! Teams can win without these players BUT the team must always be great in many different areas of the game. THAT’S WHY IT IS EXTREMELY important not to over pay average QBs

  117. Davyboy Says:

Geno try and pay attention, Baker said he would make a team friendly deal. Well he did that and all you have to say is that proves he’s not elite?? What a rube, what a freaking rube

  118. Davyboy Says:

Ohio Stae fan no doubt. Get over the flag planting incident

  119. GhostofBrady Says:

Amazing job by Mr. Licht. Long run, this is really the best for both of them. Baker’s not the type to take the money without earning it. It’s not in his nature not to gamble on himself. They are going to own the NFC South even if bended ankle Cousins go to Atlanta. That is going to be a train wreck for Atlanta. Panthers are perpetually a wreck and Derek Carr is a half a season from being split dead money losses in 2025 and 2026. I still think Minnesota’s schedule for 2024 and Kevin O’Connell was a safer path for success but TEAM baby. Baker is not going to see Mike Evans’ HOF out.

I read the Baker deal as a 1 year deal $50M with offset if we cut him and he signs with another team. If he sucks in 2024, they can cut him after 2024 and split the remaining $20M guaranteed between to $10M in 2025 and $10M in 2026. And recoup any league minimum he gets from another team in offset. Minimal risk considering how much dead cap teams let walk every year and growing cap. Then it’s just $30M per year if we keep him in 2025. And he gets a fat pay raise to $40M in 2026 which he has to earn. And incentives all around for performance and playoff success.

I am a fan of players knowing their max and giving up 20% to be in the best situation. Because winning results means future contracts. $35-40M was his max per year. He’ll get that if the deal goes through all 3 years with incentives. Baker is doing the team a solid because he wants a team that gets him Tom Brady results. Not be like Cousins pulling in $185M over 6 years and only producing 1 single playoff victory. Leave some loot and love for Godwin, David, Winfield, Wirf and the rest.

Now let’s start talking drafts! Edge, O-line, LB and RBs baby. Save picking ME’s replacement at WR#1 in next year’s draft. Improve the defense and O-line first.

  120. Capt.Tim Says:

    Jack Clark
AN ELITE QUARTERBACK WINS FOOTBALL GAMES, DIVISION TITLES, PLAYOFF GAMES, AND SUPERBOWLS.
Not another damn thing matters. All the stats are usually just to make excuses for losers.
The Game has only one goal. One end game.
    The Superbowl.
An elite QB wins, and gives your team a chance to win the Superbowl.

    Everything else is BS.

That doesn’t get him to 4k yards

  123. Gene Says:

Baker played great in 2023 AND in the playoffs.

He backed up what he said after the playoffs and signed a VERY reasonable deal with Tampa.

The BUCS management combining with Evans and Mayfield who pretty much guaranteed that the BUCS could tag Winfield this year and pick up contracts on other needed players, set themselves up to make the most of an off-season that could’ve went very wrong. Team players are PRICELESS!

    GO BUCS!🏈

Oh geno give it up. YOU LOST. We all know you are just trying desperately to comfort yourself. IF you could rank Qbs by salary then Watson and Jones would be tearing up the league. Boom. your theory blown up.

Elite? take it up with mike evans. Baker is QB1 for the foreseable future . Baker bois rule the Bucs. Licht and the glazers officially boarded our train. Nothing you can do about it.

  125. Pewter Power Says:

No guarantees in this game just ask the eagles. It is entirely possible the Bucs don’t repeat as champs since we barely won the nfc south twice in a row. For this reason they need to draft a quarterback. Paying that kind of money on a winning team is a steal for us but on an average team that can’t win the nfc south that’s a waste. Atlanta almost won it with no quarterback. The saints well who in the world knows. But those two are the main concerns

  126. BakerFan Says:

Don’t do it Baker, Bucs don’t deserve you.

  127. Gene Says:

  128. Bucben61 Says:

  129. Steven007 Says:

Boss, you’re apparently a poster of very little brain. The metrics aren’t what you’re saying. It’s quite a good deal for the Bucs. And of course Baker gets paid too. Win-win.

  130. Gene Says:

There are no guarantees in LIFE. One of my coworkers died suddenly this past week, just gone….

The BUCS stars stuck together and are going to give The Tampa Bay Buccaneers their BEST SHOT at improvement this off-season, that’s all we can ask.

“The best Is yet to come Norstadt.”

  131. Matt Says:

At least we are guaranteed a top 30 NFL QB. That’s better than potentially relying on Trask or a rookie (which neither may produce QB1).

The problem is always how do you win with such a huge cap hit at QB when the QB is a bottom tier QB1?

    Teams win with either:

cheap QB + elite supporting cast
Elite/expensive QB + mix and match supporting cast

  132. Bucben61 Says:

Boss has been proven a fraud time and time again….why are you even here… obviously not a fan

  133. Mike Says:

I imagine Baker said I will sign “only” if you get me a top tier Center in thie draft!

  134. Capt.Tim Says:

Great Job Jason Licht, getting Mayfield signed, before he went to free agency.
Did you have to wait til the last minute?

Im really happy the Bucs will have a franchise QB next season.
We address a few weaknesses- and we will be a very good team next year.

Tony Marks, Wyoming Buc, and others. Thank you for keeping the faith, and posting intelligence, in an ocean of idiocracy!

Great day for Buc Fans, Mike Evans, Liam Coen, and many others.
Now, we kept from getting worse.
Lets see what we can do to get BETTER!!

  135. Eric Says:

a great day in Tampa Bay. He wasn’t going to get the huge K because everyone wants the next Mahomes.

  136. Gerald Says:

It seems to be a very team friendly deal.

  137. sdm5821 Says:

Good deal for both sides. It will be a (pick your superlative) deal, if Baker and Emily talk their friends, Quads and Anna in to joining them in Tampa Bay. Granted, that will take some more impressive Licht magic, but it can be done.

  138. Tony Marks Says:

    @WyomingJoe:

I go with the dictionary ( though doesn’t always limit usage)

ELITE : select group that is superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society.

Thats all. It does not specify a quantity. I think whats really bothering some people is it definitely does NOT mean average or middling which is what they desperately want to sell as Baker.

I dont think for a minute Evan was saying Baker was top 3 and I don’t even think Baker would put himself to 5 but definitely Evans was saying above average. The word Elite just cannot mean middling or average

Boss, you’re apparently a poster of very little brain. The metrics aren’t what you’re saying. It’s quite a good deal for the Bucs. And of course Baker gets paid too. Win-win.

Teams often find Baker level production cheaply (rookie or just cheap vets).

We now have our Derek Carr or Daniel Jones

  140. SB~LV Says:

IMO … the behind the scenes understanding by both sides is that it Baker continues to improve along with the Bucs W&L’s he will be offered a new longer term contract that will pay him comparable to the top QB’s in the league.
    Win
    Win
Now on to FA’s and the draft.
    It’s a good day!

  141. GhostofBrady Says:

Sometimes being the #1 Pick in the draft or being a top free agent are not about the money. It’s about building and keeping a winning culture and having team success. Team success will make you Elite.

Sam Bradford reeked in $130M in his career and had 0 playoff starts and 0 seasons he played 50% snap and the team made the playoffs. He zapped the organizations he played for to build a team around him. Cousins $185M in 6 years with just 1 playoff win. And Cousins has had weapons du jour so no excuses for such limited playoff success. Baker has got a real opportunity to play many years in Tampa and have a lot more playoff success. And separate himself from the Cousins, Carr and the rest of the mid-tier QBs by having playoff success. Good for him. His family and friends will love living in Tampa awhile over Cleveland. I am looking forward to all the commercials we are about to get from Baker brand inc.

  155. GhostofBrady Says:

Hey – we all win! Can we all “just get along” 🙂

Baker is our guy for 3 years. 2 playoff wins in 4 years. Only a handful of QBs can say that. Team friendly for us, still top 15 QB money for him. We got cap space to build around him and improve on the success.

We have the best GM, best coach, best QB, best WRs and best team vibe in the NFC South. That spells HOME PLAYOFF games and then it is all guts and moxy to push up forward to the conference championship games and super bowls. Sign me up for that for the next few years.

Kyle Trask would have won 9 games last year. He would have gotten Bowles fired and Canales looking for a job as QB coach. Do you think Trask or Fields will do better this year? I think Licht does Kyle a solid and trades him to a team that is building with open competition to be a starter. Give the young man a chance. The Jets, Patriots, Broncos, Seahawks all could take a flier on the kid. Would love to see him stay as a solid backup but he deserves a shot at being starter. Wolford probably beats him out as backup just because the LA RAMs offensive tree has infected Buc Nation.

  170. Ex-Browns02 Says:

Congrats to the Bucs and Baker. Looking forward to a deep run into the playoffs in ’24!

I told you guys that you would see the type of man Baker is. He would’ve seen more in the range of $37-38MM — or possibly more, in FA. With the purported incentives in this deal, he can actually attain his “current” market value on the back side.

Baker said that he wouldn’t chase a paycheck and that he wanted to stay with the Bucs. He came through on his promises because he wants the team to continue building, success and to win! Smart kid.

Getting this done — and assuming other value-players/draftees are going to be added to the mix — virtually assures that none of us will be debating whether or not Baker is “elite” when it’s all said and done.

And to many of you: just drop your fear of “regressing”. It’s not going to happen. This team is only going to get better together.

And — Kyle is going nowhere. There’s absolutely no reason not to leverage his last year under contract — for both him and the team.

  175. Doc Says:

Look at Mayfield history, this will be sad, but he got his money, who cares.

  176. Canabuc Says:

I think this is a fair deal for all sides. If Baker plays to his potential he has the ability to earn close to 38 million dollars a year. If he does not we can easily cut bait after 2025 with zero cap hit. And if we do cut bait after this year we only have a cap hit of 20 million dollars that is still guaranteed which there are ways of stretching that out. So basically if he performs he has a good contract for 3 years and if he doesn’t we have an out.

  195. Davyboy Says:

I was told that Bakers 3 year contract is just to help the team and owners out of a tight spot. He will live cheap and rough it these 3 years and after winning 1 or 2 superbowls that’s when the owners agreed to really pay him. Biggest contract in history $95 million for 10 years. With incentives it’s a little over $1 billion. It’s a win-win

  196. matmartin Says:

We paid him $6.8m last year. We are likely going to pay him $60M in 2024 and 2025. That’s 3Y/$66.8M or less than $22.3M per year.

I don’t know how anybody can be unhappy about that. That’s an absolutel bargain contract in today’s NFL.

Even if he plays out his deal, that only takes up the average to $26.7M. There’s going to be a dozen position players next year who earn more money than that.

Bucs fans should be very content with that outcome.

Adam Schefter says it’s 30M year 1 and 2 and 40M year 3 with up to 5M in incentives each year. Year 1 fully guaranteed amd Year 2 20M of the 30M guaranteed. No guaranteed money in year 3 so its a short term deal that is realively easy to get out of. This deal proves exactly what some of us have been saying but have been called “haters” for saying it. He’s an average QB. The average starting QB contract in 2023 was 30M with 16 starters making at least 30M or more. Hopefully he continues to grow as a player with the continuity of being on the team, in relatively the same system as last year, and gets more consistent as a QB. Jason Licht continues to be really good at his job.

The only downside to this deal is we still got to deal with the non Buc Baker fans like BakerFan who was trying to say 40M-50M a year was the market rate for him lmao

  202. stpetebucfan Says:

So what are fan expectations? Gipper asked a great question on an earlier thread, what is the definition of a “franchise” QB?

I think many confuse “franchise” QB with “great QB”. I think the one thing I absolutely look for is whether the QB can win a SB with the right team? Can he at least be a Dilfer or Brad Johnson? If he can win a SB he is then a true “franchise” QB. If he LEADS teams to multiple SB’s then he is a great QB.

Mayfield does not appear to be in that latter “great” category but he could very easily be in the former category as a guy who could win a SB with the “right” team around him. He’s already won in the playoffs with two different franchises!!!

  203. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    geno711 Says
“Based on his new contract, Baker Mayfield is now being paid as the 16th highest QB”

    This.

Exactly where I said he ranked.

    So…here’s my thinking:

Baker Mayfield DID NOT have a great regular season last year. He started okay, and the defense won thos games.

    Then he lost 6 of 7 games.I

The he played great for 3-4 games, then defense saved the last could games.

In the playoffs, coaching had a great game in game 1. The entire team played great.

Game 2, Baker returned to his normal self and blew the game. Defense did not bail him out that time.

So I bring this up because all of his stats combined and averaged out ranked him at 16th.

Right in the middle of all starting QBs last season. That is NOT a great season.

But…those 3-4 games he did great in, and that one playoff game, showed he had potential. It also showed he handles pressure well.

But then…knowing that…I saw one of the Joes suggest he could regress in 2024.

That is certainly a possibility…which is why I did not want the Bucs to overspend. They didn’t…so I’m happy…though I wouldn’t have given him more than $30m/yr.

  204. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

The worst thing about this signing is we have to put up with 2-3 more years of these fangaebois up on this site who only care about one player on this team. Baker’s not bad he’s a pretty good dude but his fanbois are a rancid bunch who have torn down the fabric of this website. He’s a little over paid for someone as streaky as he is after being in the league for 6 years now and was on the best of the trash heap before he was forced to sign here. Plus he barely beat out a dude who’s never started or played an entire NFL season. He better produce as good or better than last year and stop these streaky games he shows us. Stop making excuses for the man.

  205. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Excuse the typos.

  206. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I would love to have Brad Johnson in his prime right now. I think he would be a top 8 QB on this team and with current NFL rules.

  207. Davyboy Says:

They can’t Shane. They are Texas fans

Currently, I think Mayfields ceiling is Brian Grease level…who would have done well these days too.

  209. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Fanbois love them an an eleet qb who didn’t even average 250 yards and 2 tds per game

  210. Carl Says:

So with 22.4 million cap space, they are now over the cap. they still have to sign david and draft picks. Sounds like Jason messed up again like he did with brady by pushing the money back a few years. Worst GM in the legue.

  211. Bucben61 Says:

Give it a rest haters…joes flash poll earlier has shown that over 90% of the folks on this site look upon his signing favorably…there is just a few of you that are upset by his signing but you are posting under multiple user names…like a cancer. Your rhetoric is growing old…most of us are tickled pink he’s signed

nbc says baker turned down 30 million per year to stay with the browns, because he wanted 40. this deal is closer to what he wanted but the 8 million last year has a hole that he hasnt made up. assuming nbc is correct, lots of denials.

anyway i was scared we would lose him. either directly or indirectly, this one goes to jason. good work. really good work.

now, can we ignore the haters. Baker is the real deal, he has taken two franchises to the top 8. thats better than 95+% of the top qbs drafted have done or will ever do. i dont want to hear the bs anymore, and i love trask.

This deal proves exactly what some of us have been saying but have been called “haters” for saying

🙂 Hey Dom whatever gets you to sleep tonight. I know its been a rough day for you. Just don’t go anywhere else and embarrass yourself with your QBs are ranked by pay silliness.

According to your desperate attempt to save face

Watson should have been tearing up the league

and wilson – I have no idea why Denver released him he’s top tier too by salary

I could go on but like I said I want you to get some sleep tonight. At the end of the day you all can pretend but none of you wanted Baker AT ALL to be the team’s answer to the QB question. All this tortured begging you were right is to feel better and save face that the real professionals at One buc don’t buy your silly narratives of Baker being average

It is what is is. Sleep tight.

  217. Oneilbuc Says:

I knew the Baker fan boys would be happy their not real bucs fans so what they say about the bucs don’t even matter to me. I think everyone knew the Baker was coming back. How ever it’s NFC championship or bust no excuses!! I told y’all we will be stuck with Baker Mayfield. And this year it will be Todd Bowles fault, he’s learning a new offense, he don’t have a running game, it’s his offensive line fault. I can’t wait until the season starts because I will call it like I see it. But at the same time I know we ain’t winning a superbowl or even be contenders for a Superbowl and we have to root for Baker Mayfield because he’s a buc for this year at least. Teams don’t mind moving on from quarterbacks now days even if it’s a garuteen contract. This will more likely be another average season 8-9 7-9 or 9-8 at best. Lol 🤣🤣

  218. Oneilbuc Says:

    7-10.

  219. Shak Says:

    Congratulations! Now no worries.

  220. SlyPirate Says:

IDK what y’all read but I saw 2-years and $50M guaranteed. That’s essentially a two-year $25M/year deal. WOW! Licht and crew are awesome!

  221. Rod Munch Says:

SlyPirate – Hopefully we’ll find out in a few days it was worth even less than reported, the same way we did for Evans. But yeah, the only thing that matters, for the most part in NFL contracts is the guaranteed money.

Personally I’d have paid more in year one not to get tied down in year 2 with guaranteed money, just in case Baker busts, but if Baker is terrible, that $20 dead cap hit won’t matter since they’ll blow up the team and rebuild — short of Baker getting injured.

In any case, I’m certain the deal isn’t as simple as reported, the Bucs use all sorts of accounting tricks to get year one of deals down very low – and I’m sure they did that here as well. I just hope they don’t kick too much of the cap hit down the road.

But, if Baker gets more consistent and improves, this will be an extremely good deal for the Bucs. If Baker busts, and is awful, well, everyone gets fired so a one-year cap hit won’t really matter.

  222. Cometowin2 Says:

Well done Jason and Baker! Right where intelligent Bucs fans wanted the contract to be. Fully expect Baker to earn it. Now get LVD and Chase done and get another Edge rusher, Center, LG and Safety in FA or the first 3 rounds of the draft.

    Go Bucs!

  223. Bake n Your Face Says:

Happy for all Buccaneers. The great thing is that Mayfield already has the scheme down after one season and already has dropped solid numbers in it. As a previous poster pointed out, a couple of solid O L drafts and the Bucs can play with any team if their defense keeps bringing in quality likewise.

  224. Bake n Your Face Says:

P.s. I forgot to mention that I watched him play for the Sooners with my alumni family here in Oklahoma. Boomer Sooner Baker! The underdog has done it again, from two time walk on to the Heisman Trophy, first overall pick, rookie quarterback TD record in 13 games and now back in Red. Exciting times..

  225. MelvinJunior Says:

    Didn’t Carr get like $100-MILLION Guaranteed and like 4-YEARS & $150-MIL Total!? If so, then that’s NOT “Carr-like $$$” at all… Not even really close. $50-million vs $100MIL… 3-years versus 4!?

  226. GhostofBrady Says:

A lot of things can be true
    1. Baker career is a middling QB and he has potential – and he got a contract that reflects his hard work to bet on future success as he works toward that potential
    2. Daniel Jones, Derek Carr, Kyler Murray and others getting paid more hurt their teams and thus themselves. To players who care about winning, Team matters. Baker took the team-friendly deal most of us expected from the Team guy who wants to win. Daniel Jones got $92M guaranteed and the rest of his $160M won’t happen. He’ll be a back-up in 2025. Carr and Murray will join him.
    3. In 3 years Baker will be 31 years old and the franchise tag will likely be $45-50M. Being on the Bucs was his best opportunity for Team success and cashing in again in 3 years. The 4 year deal would have given him more guaranteed money but he would have only gotten $30M average, now he gets to reset after 3 years on top of probably $35M average after some of his bonuses kicks in.
    4. Bucs have outs in case Baker plays like Freddie Kitchen or Mark Rhule are his coaches.
    5. With no Baker Mayfield to leverage on, the Vikings are gonna have to pay Cousins. Great more money for Cousins, less money to build around him. I like it when NFC teams are weakened by overpaid QBs.
    6. Falcons may get Cousins. And it may cost them. Great. Less money to build around him. I like weakened NFC South teams by overpaid QBs.
    7. I will be doing cartwheels if Atlanta ends up getting Justin Fields, now that the Steelers are no longer an option. I’ll be a little mad if Fields goes to the Giants instead providing us two easy wins each year. I can’t imaging the Falcons sticking with Ridder. I’ll be doing cartwheels if they pick JJ McCarthy – that guy has bust in the pros written all over.

Path for playoff success is usually owning your division and setting yourself up for a round 2 home game. Baker did himself a huge favor staying.

  228. Davyboy Says:

No you’re right onei TB couldn’t be a contender for a superbowl. nope no team has ever won a superbowl with a qb with a 95 qbr. Stafford did it with an 82. What a total maroon. Texas for life huh

  229. heyjude Says:

Excellent news! It is all coming together.

    Go Bucs!

  230. Ted Says:

I am happy for BM and his family. The real issue is how long will the Glazers put up with 9 wins a year? They fired Dungy for the same thing years ago and with the less than stellar off season hires by Carolina and ATL, our division will continue to be the worst in the NFL by far. In spite of winning a playoff game this year, the Bucs are very hard to watch and frustrating for a lifetime buc fan. Now Bowles has no excuse to hide behind with Mike and Baker back in the fold.

And I want Baker back for the reason I stated in my post as long as they dont over pay and handicap the cap.

I slept great knowing I got Jason Licht as the GM of my team. If it was up to some of the crazies here we’d be paying 10-20M more per season than we had too.

You are correct that the pay doesn’t indicate a 100% of where the players ranks. However, pay and the contract length does say what the team feels about a player and Jason Licht and I seem to be on the exact same page. Giving him a short term deal and making him the 16th highest paid QB, right dab in the middle, the very definition of average. If Licht thought he was anything more than that he would have given him more money and a longer commitment compared to the two year deal with a team option for the 3rd year that he gave him.

He hasn’t proven to be the elite QB you or others have claimed him to be. I’m hoping he can change that though over the next 3 years

  232. Marky Mark Says:

If you average in this year over 4 years that is 26.71 m year and he starts out for the team with a big playoff win and pro bowl.

Great then quit the whining and put downs of your teams players and finally be the fan you claim to be because you are delusional. You and Licht are not on the same page. You are not a professional GM and you have not a clue of being one or the financials the glazer impose on him

Like a lot of you guys, you are just playing Madden franchise mode in your head and swearing you are GMs equals. At least with madden you know the fantasy is over when you turn off the game. You genius wanna be Gms never turn of.

I’ve been a fan of this team for 17 years and was a season ticket holder when I lived in the area. Being a fan however doesn’t prevent me from being objective. All I’ve done is state the facts over Bakers career so far and you get in a hissy fit over it becsuse I dont agree with your take that he’s an elite QB. I cant believe you are questioning my fandom when you were prepared to root for a division rival against “your team” if he signed there. Thats one of the fakest things Ive ever heard. Check yourself

Cousins $185M 6 years with Minnesota yielded 1 playoff victory. He’s coming off a nasty Achilles tear and will make at least $100M for the next two years and maybe $180M over 4 years. Cousins fleeced Minnesota and Baker Mayfield and his agent again fleeced themselves. On the bright side, Tampa will be a stronger team with the crazy team-friendly Baker contract, Baker will have better support to be successful and Atlanta will sink in Cousins debt.

So long as Baker can live with missing out on another $30-$40M guaranteed by having more playoff success, he will be happy with fleecing himself financially.
