Harold Goodwin, Joe Gilbert Bolt To The Stinking Panthers

January 30th, 2024

Gone.

[UPDATE: 6:37 p.m.] Joe had a hunch this would happen.

Over the weekend, Joe wondered how many guys new Carolina coach Dave Canales would cherry-pick from the Bucs. Joe figured Brad Idzik, Canales’ close friend from his Seahawks days, would join Canales in Carolina.

That happened.

In the same story, Joe wondered about run game coordinator/offensive line coach Harold Goodwin. Often in his weekly press conferences, Canales noted how he would lean on Goodwin, a veteran NFL coach, for advice and guidance.

Well, sure enough, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports Goodwin is bolting the Bucs for the Stinking Panthers.

Goodwin was the Bucs’ run game coordinator and interior offensive line coach. Joe Gilbert, another offensive line coach for the Bucs, usually worked exclusively with tackles.

Remember, Todd Bowles gave Goodwin and Gilbert a very odd and questionable endorsement a year ago.

Goodwin is a good dude and he was tight with Bucco Bruce Arians. When Bucs coach Todd Bowles or Arians had to be away from the team, they tapped Goodwin to be the team spokesman in his role as assistant head coach.

So now, the Arians’ coaching staff that stuck around after he left is starting to scatter.

[UPDATE: Fellow offensive line coach Joe Gilbert is heading to Carolina with Goodwin to join Canales, per Greg Auman of FOX Sports.]

I didn’t think you could poach a coach from another team of it’s a LATERAL position??

Canales offering the same job to Goodwin that he has now???

    Am I missing something?

    Contracts were running out.

  3. BoiseBucsFan Says:

    I thought these were Arians/Bowles guys ?

  4. Nutterbutter95 Says:

You know what… Good dude or not, Goodwin oversaw some pretty terrible run games. The lines overachieved in the pass… But I dont think its a huge loss

  5. Joe Says:

    I thought these were Arians/Bowles guys ?

Bowles hinted that he was going to clean house on the offensive side of the ball last year but at the last moment changed his mind.

  6. Allbuccedup Says:

Compensatory picks Joe ? whats going on, whos next sounds like a record album.

  7. DS Says:

At this point is getting kinda wild

  8. Viktor Saint Claire Says:

I hope the Panthers s*ck really bad next year. I dislike them greatly, and now, even more.

  9. sasquatch Says:

Well, the job of getting the offense on track in 2024 just got a lot harder. If I had complete faith in Bowles, I wouldn’t be too worried. As it stands, I’m not optimistic.

  10. Tbbucs3 Says:

Canales now poaching from the Bucs the team that helped give him this opportunity just a year ago. Dirty business.

  11. Jerseybuc Says:

He can have that sorry run game but canals really getting in my nerves! Bucs gave him a huge opportunity n seems like he’s just sticking to em

  12. Dadgumit Says:

This is indicative in general of Todd’s relationship with the offense. He didnt want them around or he would have tried harder to keep them here.

  13. Lakeland Steve Says:

Meanwhile back at Buc central, Bowles is taking his sweet time finding an offensive coordinator. Now our wide receivers coach and two offensive line coaches have been taken. Sure hope Bowles has a plan because those two were pretty decent O-line coaches and those guys don’t grow on trees.

  14. Knucknbuc Says:

Eh oh well they can have them we’ve had consistently statistically one of the worst run games in the league ever since we’ve had both of them hopefully canales wants our special teams coach Keith Armstrong too 🤞🏾. I like this have the oc come in and kinda create his own staff my guess it’ll be someone we don’t necessarily know what their offense is like a van pelt and will be someone more in that canales mode. I like it Bowles really surprising me by not playing it safe imo

  15. McBucky Says:

Maybe they see a future with Canales…. hmmmmmmm

  16. Majohn16 Says:

Maybe they know an OC hire is in the works. Knowing they won’t be retained, they made their move to secure a job.

  17. Carolina K Says:

Well if your contract is running out and your offered another job…

  18. Tye Says:

Surely not because the Panthers are a better team or have better owners!

  19. optimisticbucsfan Says:

    Interesting…that’s a lot to replace

    Rough. Real rough.

I would definitely franchise Baker now.

  20. Tye Says:

Slowik and Johnson both staying with Houston….

  21. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

They should have prompted Canales to HC.

  22. sasquatch Says:

    We’re effed.

  23. A Bucs Fan Says:

Jerrod Johnson definitely turned down the Bucs.

  24. Mike Says:

They need to get a new OC so he can do the same and bring in guys he knows and has confidence in to teach his system.

  25. Knothead71 Says:

    @LakelandSteve
Don’t worry, whoever the next OC is will do the same thing DC is doing and bring his own assistants. The Bucs will be fine.

  26. Murph Says:

Last year when Coach Bowles replaced several offensive coaches, he said he was unable to find suitable offensive line coaches. It was not an endorsement of the current coaches. They probably had no jobs to return to thus they went to Carolina.

Jerrod Johnson definitely turned down the Bucs.

Apparently you have no idea how interview processes work. What evidence do you have that he was offered a job? He interviewed with us. Do you have reason to think it didn’t go well? Like actual information, not just speculative BS?

  28. Popcorn Mike Says:

Dadgumit I agree. I don’t think Bowles wanted any of the offensive coaches from Arians staff around. I ll have to look and see but I think that’s about all of Arians offensive staff. On the other hand maybe Bowles is gonna hire a top notch OC and he plan to bring some good people with him ( hopefully)

  29. beeej Says:

I doubt they felt very secure in their job status here

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Red to hire an OC soon

  31. Oddball Says:

    $h1t. I liked Goodwin.

    Oh well.

Maybe they know an OC hire is in the works. Knowing they won’t be retained, they made their move to secure a job.
    ———–

    I’m thinking THIS

Question likely came up in interviews of how the prospects would handle the various aspects of the offensive coaching staff.

We’ll know if that’s the case especially if the OC for the bucs is announced within a few days

  33. Dave Pear Says:

Now the Toadster can hire some guys who specialize in up the middle runs for a yard and a half – a full half yard more. You go Toad! Obviously guys just love working for Toad.

  34. Marine Buc Says:

I’m sure Godwin is a fine coach – HOWEVER – the Bucs interior O-line was the worst in the NFL and the Bucs were one of the worst rushing offences in the NFL.

I’m sure some of that failure is due to the talent level of our RB group and our IOL players.

But I am fine with this guy leaving. He probably would have been fired soon anyway…

  35. A Bucs Fan Says:

Joe have you seen any rumblings of OC’s turning the Bucs down? I’ve seen other publications state that is what’s happening.

  36. Kgh4life Says:

    Why couldn’t Canales take Armstrong?

  37. sasquatch Says:

    A Bucs Fan Says:

Joe have you seen any rumblings of OC’s turning the Bucs down?

They can’t turn down what’s not offered.

    Hiring process:
    1) Interview multiple candidates
    2) Narrow down the field to favorites
    3) Go to second interview with favorites
    4) Decide
    5) Make offere to best candidate

The Bucs aren’t even deep into step 1.

Jeezus. Believe what you want… People think the Bucs were turned down by 10 candidates last year. Those people are dumb.

  38. Drunkinybor Says:

Meh…offense played well at times. The run game has been what in the bottom or close to it for years. Dueces

  39. Drunkinybor Says:

I’m still holding onto my prayer for Pete Carrol ro come and take over. We heard so much about him last season.

  40. Not Says:

Well running game and between the tackles sucked so maybe its good they are leaving.
But WTF ? Toilet has no loyalty on his staff.

  41. SB~LV Says:

    Reflection on Todd Bowles

  42. BucfaninMi Says:

Canales is a snake! No integrity. Hope he he gets fired! And the panthers lose every game!

  43. Not Says:

Those two also likely knew they were gonners when a new OC arrives if he is not on the same page as Canales style.
New OC will likely bring a bunch of their own people. These guys accomplished squat this year.

  44. The Fighting Schianoes Says:

Why do I feel like Canales is going to be hanging over us for years.

It’s a Bucs life for sure. I feel like a scorned lover.

  45. Jeff Says:

Really got the assistants scattering now. After reading Pro football talk this afternoon, we see Canales is loyal to himself so now some of this is making more sense. Makes me wonder if Bowles himself is safe at this point? Having to replace coaches that had some tenure in town wouldn’t make a possible “hot seated” Bowles feel secure IMO. Maybe the staff knew something as running from the division Champs to the worst team in the NFL doesn’t pass the sniff test to me

  46. Murph Says:

Coach Bowles will finally have his staff, not Bruce Arians’ staff. He should be able to fill the positions with better coaches. People complained that the offense sucked and these same people criticize him for trying to improve it. Amazing.

  47. Duane in Sanford Says:

Addition by subtraction. Our run game coordinator was not cutting it.

  48. Tbbucs3 Says:

The dysfunctional Panthers are the only franchise dumb enough to hire a guy who has the same amount of experience as a high school strength coach than he does as a NFL OC…..let alone to a 6 year deal, cant wait to watch this fail miserably and see the Bucs beat Canales twice a year

  49. Larrd Says:

Joe should report his hunches before they happen so folks might believe him, lol.

Hopefully Leverette and Fieler and lots of runs up the gut on first and second down will follow.

  50. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So that’s what? 4 coaches gone???

May as well rebuild the staff from scratch! FIRE BOWLES!

  51. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Allbuccedup Says
    “Compensatory picks Joe ?”

    That is a GREAT question!

We got 2 third rounders for Canales. Are any of these guys minorities?

  52. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Murph Says:
“Coach Bowles will finally have his staff, not Bruce Arians’ staff. He should be able to fill the positions with better coaches.”

Bowles had the option to replace them last year and chose not to. That made them HIS staff too.

Besides…didn’t he assemble the staff at his last head coaching job? How did it work out?

  53. DBS Says:

The thing people forget is no more restraints. He is no longer held back to run , run, pass. He can do what he wants and air it out or what ever he likes. Ball is in his control now.

  54. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The night of the Superbowl? When it is over? Call the 49ers and interview Brian Greise.

  55. Usfbucs Says:

I believe we get a comp pick for Harold Goodwin.

  56. Buccos Says:

You may get away fifth being last in rushing once. But to get away with it 2 years in a row would be a travesty. There has to be some accountability. Bowles was probably going to get rid of those 2 coaches or should have anyways. This allowed them to leave on their own terms. Either way they needed to go

  57. Murph Says:

Coach Bowles wanted to replace them last year but did not find replacements he felt comfortable with. This year he most likely was going to replace them. Now he will have his own staff. As to his last job, he is the last Jets coach to have a winning season. The Jets front office was dysfunctional and traded away players Bowles valued very highly.

  58. Davenport Says:

You cant blame any of these guys.
Bowles is another 9-8 year from being they dont know who the new OC will be because Bowles is slow to make a decision.

There’s security being offered, would you stay?

  59. Please Says:

WTF is everyone so worried about? That pathetic run game we had to watch for 700 minutes can go to Carolina, stat.

I seriously do not understand the panic – Canales was likeable but this offense sucked. To be so underperforming with the skill position talent was appalling.

  60. Jerseybuc Says:

4 coaches to a division rival and we get no compensation?

  61. BakerBucs Says:

Compensation mopensation bye bye fellas canales is a dirty snake POS that’s like u r bestie sleeping with u r wife Adios dirt bags never trust a west coast azzwipe that place is the worst be happy u live on Tampa can u imagine coming from that dirty drug infest shizzhole of Seattle.canales sucked anyway baker gave him relevancy in panthers land good for him send him a bottle of vodka so when tepper is finished with him he will get the ultimate send off vodka& OJ over his head

  62. BakerBucs Says:

Out with the old in with new & improved

  63. BakerBucs Says:

Send tepper a bottle of vodka& OJ so when he is finished with canales he has the perfect (screwed)driver water bowl over the head sendoff bye bye it’s a matter of what week I wager it’s faster than this year coach of 10 games & out of there

  64. BakerBucs Says:

Hay is WTF mean what the friggin?

  65. Pewter Power Says:

Thank goodness I’m glad they are gone. It’s time to move on from as many BA’s crew as possible. It’s time to move on with some fresh ideas styles

  66. BakerBucs Says:

Tepper obviously has buckets of money why doesn’t he just buy this entire division then he pour drinks on the entire league isn’t that what drunkards do?

  67. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

Not a big loss. Contracts were expiring and a new OC will want his guys or input on hiring them at least. Need to do some top-down work, that’s all. With the coaching staff and players. Start with a capable and hopefully experienced OC on the coaching side and sign Mayfield on the player side.

Get a smart, experienced center who knows how to communicate protections, etc and coaches that can get more than 2.2 ypc out of the running game.

Canales got his job here and in Carolina because he’s a slick salesman. He hasn’t proven a thing as a coach yet. He’ll be the next Josh McDaniels without the OC credentials McD has.

  68. realistic-optimistic Says:

The run game has been pretty poor every year under Goodwin’s tutelage. And, his focus (interior OL) was the worst part. Happy to see him move along. Gilbert was better. He did a good job coaching up Goedeke at RT and helping Wirfs transition to LT. He’s a bigger loss IMO.

  69. BucsFan81 Says:

Damn Bowles might be the only coach left standing here. Maybe they all know Bowles is as good as gone after next year. Whatever happens this team better be making a deep playoff run again or they regressed and everyone will need to be fired.

  70. Proudbucsfan Says:

Sasquatch – Just to let y’all know Jarrod Jonson withdrew his name from the candidacy of offensive coordinator position from the Bucs because the Texans offered him a raise and a promotion. Another thing is that we do not get compensatory pics for Canales because he was only here for one year, in order to qualify for the picks he would have had to be here in the OC position for two years.

  71. unbelievable Says:

    @Bonzai – incorrect.

We didn’t get any comp picks for Canales. He would have had to have been here for 2 years.

  72. Let em Bake Says:

Canales carried himself with nothing but class. His teary-eyed explanation of appreciation to Bowles mid-season was a window into the man. I would not be shocked if Mike Evans, knowing he would see his production diminish, follow Dave to Carolina. That type of positivity (that emanates from his faith) draws people, like a moth to the flame. This isn’t a knock on Bowles. His players respect him. Someone said, “A man’s gift makes room for him”. I think Canales is going to surprise many next year..

  73. garro Says:

Goodwin I totally will not miss. Joe Gilbert will be missed by many more than myself. This is realy starting to smell bad coach Bowles!

Now you will not have anyone else from BA’s staff to blame it on Sir. Tom Moore is the only one left standing I think.

    Go Bucs!

  74. Todd Says:

What an advantage this is for the Bucs next year!

Bowles will already have their game plans.

Toddradamas knows next year’s first play already! Running back behind the left guard!

    BOOM! 2nd and 9! #canalesball

  75. adam from ny Says:

it’s not like we’ve lost anyone significant as defectors over to carolina…

being it’s in the same division, it’s really bad tho…

and we’ll be fine without these shlubz anyway – just hate to see things going down in this fashion…with dave pantalones circling back for sloppy seconds on all our coaches…just remember the panthers are equal to the saints – in that they are an “in division rival” – just because they haven’t been good for a minute is no reason to view them any lesser than the taints or dirty birds

  76. Statguy Says:

Arthur smith would be able to have a run game that bowles wants . He never had a QB in ATL . But he is with the Steelers now

  77. Jeffs grandpa Says:

We’ve all seen the worst running game in the nfl the past 2 seasons why be mad let em go

  78. Drew Says:

Bucs would have been better off ditching Bowles and promoting Canales. Would leave them in a much better spot having to find a defensive coordinator than an entire offensive coaching staff. Canales is the future, and he should’ve been our future. He also helps us keep Baker a gazillion times more than Bowles. Who’s more important to the Bucs, Bowles or Baker? That’s an easy one.

You know what you have with Bowles. He showed his incompetence at the end of the Lions game. I can guarantee Canales doesn’t give up there. This guy is HUNGRY. Bowles is on his last breath. And after seeing meathead Campbell in the nfc ship, he probably goes for it and doesn’t convert on 4th. Dave will be missed.

  79. Locked In Says:

Take our special teams coach too, please

  80. Bali High Says:

Remember folks, It’s a business, Just like players coaches has to look out for their best interests, As my wife always reminds me, There is two sides to every story.

  81. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Sasquatch other credentialed Bucs media are reporting that the Bucs have been turned down. Not me.

  82. Dreambig Says:

Oh man, we are in trouble now. With new OL coaches, we might just be in the bottom of the NFL in rushing! Lol!

  83. Alwaysabuccaneerfan Says:

Wow! The Panthers are going to be right up their with the Saints as far as hated rivals go.
