Dave Canales To Cherry Pick Bucs’ Offensive Staff?

January 27th, 2024

Who else on the Bucs’ staff is Dave Canales looking to grab?

Yes, Joe already wrote about how new Carolina head coach and former Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales requested to interview Bucs wide receiver coach Brad Idzik.

Canales and Idzik are tight. Canales brought Idzik with him to Tampa from Seattle last offseason. And it is no surprise he wants Idzik as his offensive coordinator.

(Reports out of Carolina indicate Canales will call the plays just like he did here.)

Well, closet Bucs fans and NFL insider Peter Schrager of NFL Network says his intel tells him “many” Bucs offensive assistants will have their contracts expire shortly. So Schrager seems to think Idzik is not the only guy Canales is interested in among the Bucs’ assistant coaches. Schrager didn’t toss out any names.

Just a hunch, but Joe thinks it may be the Bucs’ offensive line coaches, whom Todd Bowles gave a very strange endorsement last winter. Joe knows that Canales and Joe Gilbert grew tight in Canales’ lone season here. And often, Canales in his weekly press conferences cited run game coordinator/offensive line coach Harold Goodwin as someone he leaned on in Canales’ first season as an NFL playcaller.

Joe is just speculating but if Schrager’s intel is correct — and Joe knows who Schrager talks to (ahem) — it seems like Bucs coach Todd Bowles is going to be looking for more than just an offensive coordinator in the coming days.

    Benedict Arnold!

  2. Bojim Says:

    That’s gratitude for ya.

  3. Rayjay1122 Says:

A new OC will probably want his own coaching staff anyways. Probably not a big deal.

  4. unbelievable Says:

Not too worried about this, I’m sure most new OCs will have a few guys they want to bring in.

Have we heard about any offensive players raving about their position coaches anyway?

  5. Tye Says:

HMMM!… Work for Bowels who has a resume of not being able to beat average and above teams OR a young OC turned HC that could be the next big thing…

Coaches who can’t wait to cut ties from Bowels is understandable… And expected!

  6. adam from ny Says:

he should try to leave with a sense of respectability…

acting like he’s all in…then he’s all out…and in division, is rat type sh!t…

so take a guy or two of yours, all leave with head down, and a “T” on your back for traitor…

but don’t try to rape the organization on your way out…

try to go as quietly in the night as you can…

turns out that all that “good podium” he was giving was all a complete crock of sh!t…in hindsight it would have been better if he talked to the press and public like byron did…all that warm cuddly loving sh!t was just that…bullcrap…but honestly i bought it too…

this guy talks a good game…gotta be weary of people like this…

now i honestly am appreciating coach bowles podium more, after listening to dave cantalones…

never wh0re yourself out for money – in the end it usually doesn’t pan out…

  7. Anon Says:

We’ve had a pathetically coordinated run game since Arians arrived. Unimaginative up the gut every 1st down.

Losing the run game coordinator is could be great.

  8. FortMyersDave Says:

Losing anyone who advocated sending White up the gut behind the center and guards so many times would be a blessing in disguise. Plus Bowels will know exactly what Carolina will call on offense next year, just like how Chuckie knew exactly what the Raiders would call when he faced them for all the marbles in San Diego 2003.

Love that Canales is financially set for life but also expect him to really have couple of bad years rebuilding the Panthers if Tepper does not fire him during their first long losing streak and as a 3 win franchise, they will have a lot of those.

  9. garro Says:

This is the business of Pro Footbal but this stuff sucks!

    Go Bucs!

  10. Dave Pear Says:

Todd is going to throw the ball at the ground. He winds up….he lets it fly…..HE MISSES!

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Should’ve been expected; not a big deal. Bucs have some solid offensive pieces under contract & majority are still quite young. This team barely scored 20 PPG & finished #20 in Points Scored. That’s not exactly over-achieving IMO.

Re-sign a couple of vets (Evans, Mayfield, probably Stinnie & Edmonds for depth), have a good draft (RB, TE, WR, Guard and/or Center), pick up a couple of solid vets (whoever we feel we can’t get in the draft) and we’ll have the makings of a better offense. Tough 2024 schedule so we’ll need it.

The key will be the OC & his staff for us to take a big step forward (ideally into the Top-10). Lots of new HCs apparently, so we’ll need to be pro-active in our OC search & not dilly-dally.

  12. Buc4evr Says:

Bucs need better O line coach, who cares. Running game assistant, who cares. Hope we get a top OC like Robinson or Moore, their assistants will follow.

  13. Popcorn Mike Says:

This is the NFL and this stuff happens every day. This will also tell me how good of a talent evaluator for assistants Bowles is, good HCs are usually good at replacing assistants. Goodwin is a surprise, I thought Goodwin and Bowles went went way back to when they both were on Arians staff with the Cardinals. However, I also think sometimes when assistants leave at a high rate it’s because there’s some beef with the HC

  14. BucU Says:

I’m going to really enjoy wTching Canales fall on his face in Carolina.

  15. Dave Pear Says:

    Why prolong the obvious?

  16. heyjude Says:

We knew this would happen, and here we are. NFL is a cut-throat business. And that is just it, a business on the backs of the players and fans. Anyone is dispensable. Unsure, how Canales and others will work with Fetter. He fires people on a dime, and throws drinks on fans. Not good optics.

  17. Boss Says:

Puuuhlease let him take Todd as his TE coach…

  18. DungyDance Says:

Carolina dumped Tabor and also their offensive line coach. Joe, madam Ruby wants her crystal ball back.

  19. It's Corn Says:

    pretty slimy

  20. Since76 Says:

The bucs offense doesn’t have too far to fall. Ranked 20th in points scored and horrible in the run game. Pretty much only place to go is up. If they can keep Evans passing game is good doesn’t matter what QB you have.

  21. realistic-optimistic Says:

And often, Canales in his weekly press conferences cited run game coordinator/offensive line coach Harold Goodwin as someone he leaned on in Canales’ first season as an NFL playcaller.

Please take Goodwin with you, Canales! Our running game has been bad every year since he’s been with us. Through 3 OCs. He’s been the constant.

What’s with all the traitor talk? Good for Canales for getting a HC job. When has a coordinator taken a HC job and not poached coaches from his previous team? It’s the way of it.

  22. geno711 Says:

People on this site who take a crap on our O line coaches, I do not get it.

The year that Goodwin got here was 2019.

That was Jensen’s 2nd year. He was much better in 2019.

Besides Jensen, these line coaches had a hand in making Alex Cappa, Ali Marpet, Tristen Wirfs, and Luke Goedeke guys on the offensive line that are good. I think they are better at teaching the pass blocking skills more than run blocking but really are pretty amazing teachers of technique for pass blocking in the NFL.

  23. rrsrq Says:

The interesting part of complaints of the online, should look no further than upstairs, I like Licht, but how many times are you going to go to the well of small school guys, we hit it with Marpet, the jury is still out on the others. Not only that who on the offensive line is playing a position they played in college, our 3rd and 4th round picks have not only the NFL learning curve but a position learning curve while getting on the job training. Look at the team we just played, those are two or three first rounders on their offensive line. We have one and he just transitioned positions

  24. A Bucs Fan Says:

@GoForTheFace- I wrote a comment out and it disappeared. So I’ll paraphrase here. I’m not a Trask fan. I’m a Bucs fan, and the only reason Blaine Gabbert was second string was because Brady didn’t want Trask to be the back up and he was golf and drinking buddies with Clyde.

Trask’s first opportunity was this season, and they were pretty even during the competition. Yet Baker’s history of getting a team to the playoffs got him the start with Bowles job on the line. Thankfully it worked out for them this year. C

  25. Bucfan Says:

Shame Canales won’t take Todd with him. Lets face it – the NFC south was weak this year and the Eagles GAVE the game to the Bucs. How many games did they win against winning teams? Lets get Monkin and head coach & O/C.

  26. Curse of Gruden Says:

Is he taking Bowles with him?

  27. VOT Says:

The run game isn’t exactly a strength of this team and hasn’t been for quite some time

Most of the season I was asking if the “run game coordinator” even came to work

As to the WR coach – having Mike and Chris sure helps a lot…Palmer did good for a low round pick – but why did it take 15 games before we used our only true 3wr which was David Moore – Palmer should have been the 4th WR, he dropped a lot of passes and fumbled multiple times

Overall, Canales got better with playcalling as the year went on, but it didn’t look like he had enough protection checks in place and left RT and LG alone way too much in pass pro

Also his penchant for 2nd and 9 runs to nowhere is legendary in one season

Looking forward to a more experienced OC coming on board

  28. Jeffs grandpa Says:

This is what happens to good teams get used to it

  29. Beeej Says:

The Robinson guy from the Rams, he’s my fav at this point

  30. WillieG Says:

If any of BA’s/Bowles guys leave to follow Canales to the Panthers, that will tell me what they think of Bowles and his chances of winning it all.

  31. Sue Says:

Complete traitor. I understand the “business” of football. But this is a division rival!

Need to completely beat his PANTS OFF when they come here.
Don’t worry. A traitor will show the same characteristics with the Panthers. Good luck Panthers!

  32. stpetebucfan Says:

If Corum last till the second grab him. He’s one of the best pure runners in the game but has suspect hands. He MAY drop.

D.R. I’m with your choices except perhaps at TE. I thought Payne Durham flashed enough to give him a shot. Otton has turned into a genuine TE. The Bucs have been spoiled by Gronk. There are very few GRONKS in the game.

The old cliche is that games are won and lost in the trenches. Like all cliches they exist because of the kernel of truth they contain. IF the Bucs had a top 5 line on both sides of the ball they WILL WIN!!

In some pubs final rankings the Bucs moved up to 11th on the OL.

The DL is not ranked in the top 20 because of wait for it….no pass rush.
DL respected against the run but not the pass.

OK Joe you and my eyes have convinced me. Get some more pass rushers you can never have enough.

Question….IF…not likely but IF…DW45 ate his pride and gambled a year could the Bucs find a way to make him an effective pass rusher? Perhaps Shaq’s replacement?

  33. Beeej Says:

Apparently White’s build isn’t conducive to being an edge rusher. Man needs a change of scenery anyway to get his head on straight. Eagles will be going to 3-4, bet they take a chance on him

  34. stpetebucfan Says:

    Beej

THX for that answer. Wow if he goes to the Eagles he’ll fit right in with the other talented whiners. That team is already a dumpster fire character wise, why not add another malcontent eh?

  35. BigMacAttack Says:

[Come on man, take it easy. — Joe]

  36. Jmarkbuc Says:

Hope he takes the OL and RBs coaches

  37. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Relax everyone, the only constant in life (NFL) is change. I have confidence in the Bucs front office to figure it out.

  38. adam from ny Says:

as fans we have a right to be pissed…he duped us all…

and now we’re scrambling for things more than anticipated…

we have enough players we’re trying to hang on to – and now this

  39. MadMax Says:

Im sure theres room for a DC Mr. Canales…take Bowles too!!!

  40. Fansince76 Says:

I hope the crappy Panthers go 1 and 16 next year with their one win against the Aint’s.

  41. BelleGladeBuc Says:

I was a big critic of Baker at the beginning of this season.

Go rewatch this season and see how many times Baker bailed out the Bucs offense because they were off script because of Canales’ insistence that running behind Hainsey was a great call.

    It was a lot.

The Bucs offense started out slow for most of the season because Canales came up with a game plan that didn’t work.

Canales is an example of a guy who looks the part and talks like
he’s Dude Love and winning over people with his personality while being massively deficient at his job.

Canales as the OC led the Bucs to score 313 points this season, ranking the Bucs’ offense as 25th in points scored.

Only the Jets, Panthers, Patriots, Giants, Titans, Steelers, Falcons, Cardinals,
Raiders, and Chargers scored less touchdowns than Canales’ offensive genius could produce. None of those teams made the playoffs and some of them are the worst teams in the league.

That kind of offensive touchdown production from an offensive coordinator might impress Dave Tepper, but it doesn’t impress me.

  42. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Unpopular opinion, but Canales sort of sucked. He didn’t “save” Mayfield’s career. That belongs to to Sean McVay and Baker. The “Mayfield miracle” against the Raiders and The Christmas Present against the Broncos that got HC fired had not one damn thing to do with Canales. So, old boy came here and mismanaged Evans, Godwin, White and Mayfield for half the season, pulled head out of butt and let them shine. Dont freak out, failure is easily replaced

  43. CalBucsFan Says:

Canales will regret the move, Carolina’s owner is way too impatient for a HC that has hardly any experience at all as a coordinator, let alone a HC.

Seriously, I wish him well but he would have been a lot better off staying with the Bucs for at least one more year. Heck, he may very well have inherited the HC position in Tampa next year since Bowles is just not the answer here and the team has a lot more talent than Carolina.

Heck, I though Canales was smarter than that!

Klint Kubiac or Zac Robinson would be a great hire. But do whatever it takes to keep Thad Lewis in house. He’s a keeper but needs a couple more years experience

  46. gotbbucs Says:

So on the flip side, would we expect the new OC coming in to just accept the offensive staff already in place, or would we expect them to want to bring in people that they have relationships with outside of the Bucs organization?
This is a silly thing to worry about.

  47. Bucs Guy Says:

Please take Not-So-Special Teams coach Keith Armstrong.

  48. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Since76 says wtf r u retarded of course it matters what qb u have didn’t u go all in for brady plz don’t say such stupid stuff it really isn’t smart then again whoever said u were smart u have been a big mouth all season long

  49. BAKERSBucs says Says:

So when u hire a OC or a DC u r expected to bring in there staff so inother wards they suck without them? So why doesn’t the owner say this when hiring that particular person.what is the hype with Canales i don’t see what all u guys keep saying it’s not like he was the guy or guys actually in the game playing downs.what does that oc really do get the pom pom’s and will that player to do great things plz that guy was the most repetitive monkey all season I personally think baker just decided to do his thing I don’t give that traitor an ounce of credit

  50. BillyBucco Says:

    Zac Robinson to Atlanta.
    Maybe Brian Griese?
Maybe Kellen Moore? He does like to throw the ball.
Can’t see him NOT using our WRs correctly.
Would also be really nice if Griese incorporated TRUE scheduled plays like SF anyway.
We need a few pieces ONLY.
LG, TE, S, WR, LB and sign a talented DE/OLB.
Gotta keep Evans and Winfield and hopefully David plays one more year.
Even Kliff Kingsbury would be exciting.
Please get this right Todd. Again.

  51. Statguy Says:

I see everyone is in their feelings. Dude was offered 6 years guaranteed As a HC. He would be doing a disservice to his family if he didn’t take that and those opportunities are few far between. He was in Seattle nearly 15 years before he got ANY opportunity. And it took Raheem another 15 with a solid track record since leaving here to get another opportunity. You have one life and he is making the best of it while you do nothing’s are lacking a board here

  52. Statguy Says:

    Pecking a keyboard

  53. orlbucfan Says:

Well, looks like I haven’t missed much. I wish Canales the best, but it’s going to be a rough ride in Charlotte. He needed one more year as an OC. That new Panthers’ owner is an a-1 ahole. Can we kindly can some of the Bowles’ bitchin’ please?

  54. Eli Says:

Need non compete clauses at least in the division.
