Hall Of Famer Look At Mike Evans And Bucs’ Execution

December 21st, 2023

Love from an unlikely source.

Joe loves when Hall of Fame players break down Xs and Os.

Packers Hall of Fame Safety LeRoy Butler does that regularly for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which means he studied Bucs film this week after Tampa Bay rung up 34 points on the Packers.

Those who follow the NFL on a broad scale like Joe does know Packers fans are convinced their defense is beyond horrible and the Bucs caught them Sunday in the midst of a steady implosion.

Joe can’t buy into that. Every team has talent, and one could argue the Bucs defense was in bad shape entering Sunday’s game after allowing a career day to dismal Desmond Ridder the Sunday before.

Joe brings up Butler for a few interesting reasons.

First, he noted during the film breakdown how much Jon Gruden, as a Packers position coach, taught him about red zone routes and concepts to defend them. Before Gruden was Raiders and Bucs head coach, he was a Packers assistant and wide receivers coach. Joe thought that was very cool.

Second, Butler, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2022, was firm in saying Mike Evans will be a Hall of Fame. Guys in the Hall don’t call modern players worthy of the Hall very easily. So that was special to hear.

On Evans’ red zone touchdown in Green Bay, Butler praised Evans for the “looky route,” which is designed to draw the eyes of the cornerback and pause his feet before the receiver cut inside. “He’s going to be a Hall of Famer, man,” Butler said.

Interestingly, Butler acknolwedged that Green Bay played 2nd-and-29 late in the first half in a prevent-style defense. And he said they should have approached it more like 2nd-and-11 to stop the Bucs from getting into field goal range.

Per Butler, the Bucs had the right call in for the right guy, Chris Godwin, who Butler said should have been jammed at the line of scrimmage on what turned out to be a big Godwin reception.

He also backhandedly praised Bucs playcaller Dave Canales at other times for forcing the Green Bay defense to make smart adjustments they haven’t made previously.

There definately was improvement with the play calling. They set up the run with the pass. That is today’s NFL.

Interesting. Butler is DHOFamer. He’ll know Blue Ribbon receivers cos he played against them. ME13 going to Canton is no surprise to Bucs fans. LVD better be headed there, too.

    He isn’t done yet.

Let’s wait and see how long ME13 can continue playing at a high level.

We may see another 4-5 years of production from this guy if he stays healthy…

Idea for an article. Explain what goes into profootball reference’s hall of fame monitor, and why Mike Evans is so far away from even the average hall of fame wide receiver.

HOF Monitor: 54.34 (65th among WR, average HOF WR is 103.63)

  10. Bojim Says:

Best hands in the NFL. At times he makes it look so easy. A few more good seasons I can see him as a first ballot.

  11. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Very impressed with Canales for adapting, figuring out what works, what doesn’t, team strengths and weaknesses, how to get an edge. Moving off wide zone to counter for the running game. Moving Godwin back into the slot where his athleticism creates mismatches. Taking advantage of White’s pass catching skills. He’s a keeper

He is the only player in the history of the NFL to have 1000 in each of his first 10 seasons and is tied with Jerry Rice for most consecutive seasons with 1000 yards. That in itself makes him a HOFer. And next year when Trask is the QB, he will get close to 2000 yaeds which will make him a shoo in.

  14. BillyBucco Says:

    Me too
You just threw up all over the post.

  15. Drunkinybor Says:

I watched that and thought man it’s cool Evans is finally getting recognized. He was a wild man for his first few seasons but he then would score quietly. No more fights besides matshonne little less. Sometimes that recognition never comes if you aren’t screaming look at me. But 10 seasons over a 1000 plus he’s done it in 16 games not 17 is golden ticket to the hall of fame. Can’t believe it used to be a onean show in Canton. Now we have 5!!

  16. Drunkinybor Says:

    Going to be 6

Leroy Butler holds more street cred than Nate Burleson. Butler’s a defensive guy. They don’t like to toss out compliments for a wide receiver often.

  19. 1#bucsfan Says:

That’s what I’ve bin saying buc. Pass to set up the run. Bowels like to do the opposite so maybe this past Sunday was a turning point for him and how he puts guidelines in place for canales. Can’t say he doesn’t have his hand in the offense cause he straight up said he didn’t want to run BA offense last year cause players were too tired which is BS. Bowles has handcuffed his OCs

    Go Bucs!

  22. Pirates Life Says:

    Arrrrg!

  23. BradyGronk Fan Says:

I was looking at the all time receiving leaders list and Mike is not a HOF,.. yet.

Outside a few exceptions on the long end ie Rice and Fitzgerald and short end ie Calvin Johnson,… almost all HOF receivers played between 12 to 15 years.

ME don’t have the stats and accolades Calvin Johnson had and what Tyreek Hill has.

ME needs 2 more years of 1000+ yards to get to HOF but likely not 1st ballot. The accolade is beating Rice in consecutive 1000+ yards.

ME needs 4 more years and 15000+ yards and 120+ TD to be 1st ballot. The fact is the offensive rules and extra game are padding stats thus he needs to be top 10 in both categories. He needs to show he is better than his contemporaries Hopkins, Adams, Allen, Diggs. Tyreek is at the Calvin Johnson level which is one above.
