Best Run Game Performance

December 21st, 2023

The Bucs’ prized rookie defensive tackle showed more improvement on Sunday.

Kancey didn’t sack Jordan Love and didn’t have a big stats day, but Todd Bowles said Kancey advanced in the one of the least sexy aspects of his job.

“I thought Kancey had his best run defense game of the season as far as not getting out of his gaps and staying in his gap that way,” Bowles said.

The Bucs’ run defense is significantly better this season. It’s not the force it was in 2019, 2020 and 2021, but it’s better. And that’s encouraging, with Kancey playing a ton of snaps and second-year DT Logan Hall starting and playing more than half the time, though he has played less recently. It’s also interesting that the run defense is a little better this season with Lavonte David and Devin White missing a combined total of five games.

Bowles add that Hall needs to do a better job of finishing.

This is O/T. Speaking of run, what exactly was that play called that White scored the 31 yard TD?

  2. SteveK Says:

Love the Kancey pick. Lining him up next to Vita is a MFer.

Here’s to hoping Licht signs Brian Burns if he hits FA, and drafts another menace on the defensive line. Keep building the trenches.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It should be better……we ave invested 5 of our 7 last top draft picks on the front seven………Kancey, Hall, JTS, Vea & White

Time to bolster the Offense with a stud TE, RB & G/C.

Do you guys still do podcasts? Been TWO weeks since the last one. Just wondering

I love that this year Licht targeted players with great athleticism, even if raw. With Kancey he is both hyper athletic and polished as a pass rusher. He needs to hone his craft to make an impact despite being undersized, which he is doing a good job of so far. If he ends up like a player like Grady Jarrett, this would be a great draft pick. We all obviously want him to play like Aaron Donald, but that may be unrealistic.

Just like JTS, it’s another quiet season for Logan Hall.

  7. SteveK Says:

I appreciate that Licht sticks to his board and will make a move when he feels it is so.

Not all on Licht for the missed picks. I’d take his picks and results over damn ear every GM right now. He’s gotta be top 8, top 25%.

Keep drafting DL and may the top dog win. No need to draft a guy and get complacent. Try again.

If the board dictates, I’m all for getting an offensive player. Hopefully a big bad MFer in the trenches.

  8. SteveK Says:

Draft more kickers and linemen. Those a-holes win games.

Take the other skill positions if the situation dictates such.

  9. Beeej Says:

Read a neat analysis about this on PR. The Bucs increased spacing between the lineman pre-snap, and they’re doing less zone blocking and more counters

I can’t wait for this kid to get bigger, stronger, faster this off-season.

Dude is going to be a beast if he stays healthy…

Love kancey pick. The crazy thing is he’s super athletic. Same thing with JTS tho yet JTS doesn’t produce can’t knock Jason for going after athletic talent and them not producing. Zion super athletic kancey mauch hall JTS white dean all got speed and are athletic some have produced greatly others havnt. I won’t knock Jason for it. More produce them not. Keep picking like you are

  12. Bucfan1988 Says:

Marine Buc, could you imagine Kancey getting FASTER…
Dude ran 4.67 at the combine, haha…

    A little bigger & stronger is cool w me…

    More than anything, SMARTER!!

    I need a drink.

Kancey is a beast, he is only going to get better and stronger. Hall is garbage so far I don’t have any faith that he’ll turn it around, same for JTS, get rid of them. I do however have complete confidence and faith in Jason licht.

  15. SlyPirate Says:

CK and Vea are solid. Hall … He’s a rotational guy. Still need another DL.

  16. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Giving Licht a pass for the Covid years..Limited data and you have to make a pick. Swing and a miss on JTS and Hall. Wasted pick on Trask, statues don’t work out in the NFL. Goedecke is solid, Mauch and Otten too. Cancey is a home run pick. Chop Robinson R1 next year

  17. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

If Hall ends up being this generation’s version of Will Gholston, I could live with that. I know we don’t have Bears money this off-season, but if we can somehow get an impact player on either line that would be great. One for each line is probably asking for a bit much.

Excellent! Throw in a few more power and toss sweeps per game (getting White into space) and our run game will look SO much better, methinks.

I’ve been hollerin’ all season long for more space-concept runs. Hope to see more!!

  19. Lakeland Steve Says:

Kancey is playing better but let’s not sell the addition of KJ Britt to starting inside linebacker short. Although I am sure he still has a lot to learn he has at times been a real force in the run defense. Britt hits you and you generally go backwards.

  20. Beeej Says:

OOps, ought have read thread title a lil more closely. ANYhow, SPEAKING of defensive tackles, read that Sapp is gonna help coach at Colorado next year w Deion, that’s pretty cool

  21. garro Says:

Funny but I was noticing the other rookie on the Kine. Diaby was a busy man Sunday. The OLB got 60% of the snaps. Finally got to see this dude play the snaps he should be playing. Did not really focus on him but he looked good the few times i noticed him Sunday.

    Go Bucs
