Bucs Training Camp 2023 Day 8 Practice Notes

August 4th, 2023

At least for a seven-on-seven period, Bucs quarterback Kyle Trask looked as good as any NFL quarterback, the Bucs struggled with snaps under center so badly they went to shotgun, and Ko Kieft gives a middle finger to all the draftniks who slammed him on his hands last winter. This and more in today’s Bucs practice notes from training camp.

* The Bucs begin practice using a giant beach ball (medicine ball?) during special teams drills. It appears they are using them as tackling dummies. How this helps tackling, Joe isn’t sure.

* Joe likes this: Bucs quarterbacks, in position drills, roll out each time towards the sideline and then throw to a receiver running toward the sideline. The drill is used both for quarterbacks to sharpen their skills and for receivers to get work on their footwork and getting both feet inbounds.

* Kyle Trask hits Cade Otton along the right sideline.

* Trask throws to the left and finds Mike Evans between Jamel Dean and Devin White. Trask smartly throws the ball just a hair high and Evans uses his height advantage to grab the ball. Otherwise good coverage by Dean and White but a pretty play by Trask and Evans.

* Trask is flushed to the right and dumps the ball off to Deven Thompkins for a loss.

* Almost: tight end David Wells got a step on cornerback Zyon McCollum down the left sideline and Trask tries to throw long for Wells but the ball was just too long.

* Baker Mayfield connects with wide-ass open rookie Trey Palmer over the middle. How can you get that open over the middle? Speed?Busted coverage? Speed and busted coverage?

* FUMBLE! Nick Leverett, at center, and Mayfield botch the snap as Mayfield lined up under center.

* FUMBLE II! Second straight play Leverett and Mayfield couldn’t execute a successful snap from center.

* On the very next play, Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales must have said, “Aw, skip it!” and had Mayfield line up in shotgun.

* Mayfield throws to Otton along the left sideline. Otton was open but he took off before he had possession and dropped the ball.

* Otton has been a mixed bag this camp. He’s gotten better as a tight end and he finds a way to get open. Often. But he’s developed butterfingers. Otton has dropped several cans of corn.

* Mayfield throws to Chris Godwin to the left. Nolan Turner races in and punches the ball out from Godwin but the Pro Bowl receiver recovered his own fumble.

* Sweet catch: Mayfield rolls left and as Ko Kieft comes in from the middle of the field and nears the sideline, he dives for Mayfield’s pass in traffic and hauls the ball in one-handed. Anyone remember last spring how the draftniks all said Kieft couldn’t catch?

* Tight end Payne Durham catches a short Trask pass on the right side.

* Running back Patrick Laird tries running up the middle. Nothing, doing.

* RB1 Rachaad White catches a Trask pass on the right side for a short gain.

* Trask throws to Evans again in tight coverage, this time down the right seam. Trask, smartly, again tries to throw high for Evans but it was a bit too high. Dean was on Evans like stink on SpongeBob Leftwich’s playsheet.

* Joe wants to type something very nice and complimentary about Evans in this summer’s training camp, but Joe doesn’t want to jinx the man.

* Trask hooks up with Ryan Miller in the very same spot as he tried to feed Evans on the previous play.

* Trask throws to Godwin over the middle but the pass is batted away from Godwin. Joe couldn’t catch the number of the defender.

* Trask threw to Dominique Dafney along the right sideline. A defender jumped the route and whiffed, which sprung Dafney for a good chunk of yards.

* Trask throws too low over the middle for Thompkins. This was a signature pass of Trask for 2 1/2 years. Offensive coordinator Dave Canales apparently got Trask to stop throwing that until today. Joe hasn’t seen Trask throw that pass in training camp until this play. That’s part of the transformation of Trask this summer from inactive clipboard holder to potential NFL starter.

* Mayfield throws to Thompkins in the right seam and the ball hits him in the hands and falls incomplete. However, flags fly. Defensive holding?

* Mayfield throws deep down the left sideline and overthrows Taye Barber. A fan gives Mayfield the Bronx Cheer but to be fair, Barber never could shake undrafted rookie DB Christian Izien on the play.

* If Kieft’s catch wasn’t the play of the day, the following certainly was. Mayfield throws to the left and short (Joe couldn’t tell who the intended receiver was) and the ball was tipped and bounced high and about 10 yards downfield. There Miller juggled and juggled and juggled the ball some more before pulling it in with one hand before hitting the turf.

* Mayfield throws behind David Moore on a crossing pattern from the right.

Red Zone

* Trask throws to Kade Warner on the right side for a score.

* Mayfield lobs a pass to the back of the end zone near the goal post for Mike Evans who boxes everyone out, jumps and hauls in a touchdown. This is such a common sense play with Evans. Joe cannot figure out why in the world it wasn’t used more last year. Then Joe remembers who was running the offense in 2022. Riddle solved.

* Mayfield tries to hit Trey Palmer on a crossing route near the back of the end zone and either Palmer was interfered with or he fell down. Either way, ball falls to the turf, incomplete.

* Mayfield waits and waits and waits and waits and clips his toenails and has a shave and then decides to roll out to the left. Then he tries to force a pass to Kaylon Geiger in traffic along the left sideline which may have been a loss on the play if Geiger caught it. Incomplete. But why? Why risk it on such a tough play that may have lost yardage? Just get rid of the ball and live to play another down. This play had to frustrate Todd Bowles.

* Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales said his quarterbacks must make a decision to throw or run 2.7 seconds after the snap. This play was more like 6.7 seconds and a poor decision on top of it.

* That play sure reminded Joe of a Jameis Syndrome pass. “I’m not scared of any pass.” Well, you should be.

* Bringing the juice: After a period of walkthroughs, Trask begins clapping to get his teammates perked up in the middle of a hot, repetitive practice. Trask then begins high-fiving people. Trask is fired up.

Seven-on-Seven

* Trask to Godwin to the left.

* Trask to Evans to the left.

* Trask to Sneak Vaughn along the left sideline.

* Trask hits Durham on the right sideline. Lavonte David tried to jump the route but he missed the ball.

* Durham again catches a Trask pass along the right sideline.

* Mayfield had enough time to order a pizza and he then connects with Geiger to the left.

* Mayfield hits Rakim Jarrett in the gut on the left sideline and he drops it.

* Mayfield tries to hit Jarrett over the middle but Kaevon Merriweather had excellent blanket coverage on Jarrett. B1G on B1G crime.

* Mayfield to Geiger down the right seam.

* Evans on a slant pass from the right and Trask hits Evans right in the hands in perfect stride and Evans houses it. Such a pretty play.

* Trask hits Moore on the right side as Trask threads the needle between three defenders.

* Trask throws into a crowd for Jarrett and it is incomplete.

* Mayfield tries to throw to Miller in the right seam but the pass is way short, incomplete. Ball hits the turf.

* Maybe a 10- or 12-year old boy in the bleachers after watching that play yelled, “What was that?”

* Mayfield tries for Dafney on a crossing pattern, incomplete but Joe immediately sees several flags in the air.

* Warner pulls in a pass from Mayfield in the right seam.

11-on-11

* Trask cocks his arm and pulls the trigger, firing deep down the right sideline, maybe 40-45 yards in the air and connects with Evans for a monster touchdown. But, being a two-minute drill, too much time left on the clock? LOL

* White runs up the middle for a few yards.

* Trask had Russell Gage open on the left side between a pair of defender but couldn’t get the ball to him, incomplete. Gage made three nasty moves on two separate defenders to spring open.

* Trask to Vaughn along the left seam but the zebras claim Vaughn dropped it.

* Anthony Nelson and Will Gholston chase Mayfield who throws over the middle incomplete.

* Sean Tucker makes an appearance and he runs up the middle for perhaps a 15-yard gain.

* Mayfield throws to Palmer on the left side but too high.

* Ronnie Brown runs up the middle.

* Gage makes a nice catch of a Mayfield pass to the left side.

* Someone f’ed up: Gage is so wide-ass open down the middle he could have brushed his teeth before a defender hit him. All John Wolford had to do was make sure his bomb hit Gage and still Gage had to stretch out for the ball near the 10 as he jogged into the end zone. Had to be a blown coverage.

* Trask is flushed left.

* Trask throws high to Palmer on the left sideline. Palmer had to go high for the ball and it appeared the ball may have gone through his hands.

* Trask tried to connect with Barber over the middle and it’s over his head. Barber was covered pretty well by Zyon McCollum and Turner.

* Trask hits Otton along the right sideline.

* Thompkins is the successful target of Mayfield for a pass to the left sideline.

* Trask dumps the ball off to Kieft.

* PICK! Mayfield launches a pass down the right sideline deep for Barber but overthrows the TCU product and instead, Derrek Pitts (North Carolina State) brings it in.

Is Sean Tucker getting any reps?

  2. Joseph C Simmons Says:

It’s a good sign that Trask is avoiding turnovers. Very un-Jameis-like. If he can also move the chains, I can see him possibly winning this competition.

    So Mayfield 6
    Trask 1?

Man it sounds like Mayfield is having an awful camp

    Trask keeps getting dubs!

    Love the bullet points
Might be good for a post game break down

  7. Scott Says:

    The offense sounds explosive

  8. Marine Buc Says:

Seems like Baker Mayfield’s biggest flaws have still not been corrected.

    – Blocked passes at the LOS
    – Fumbled snaps (he had several at Carolina)
    – Not knowing when to give up on a play/making bad decisions under pressure
    – Holding the ball too long and getting sacked

It will be interesting to watch these QBs play in next week’s preseason game…

  9. nick houllis Says:

I can’t see any way they give the job to trask. if you do, you will have Baker Mayfield as a backup and trask looking over his shoulder, right? if trask starts week one, he REALLY earned it. This is either 10-8 or 3-14, no in between

  10. 1#bucsfan Says:

Absolutely love what I’m hearing from trask. Always had faith in him. Just need to see how he does against other teams and when the lights come on. If he keeps this up in preseason games against other 1st stringers he’s will be out QB. I’m not a gator fan but I also don’t want to see a 2nd rd pick wasted or not even developed which seemed to be the case the last 2 years. Arians was to busy trying to win SB then develop his QB

    ………….

Where you for the past 6 months as the favoritism was all for Mayfield. Go find another site.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

Love the daily notes Joe. I get the sense that these practices are still very up-tempo (you mentioned something similar about the initial practices if I remember correctly). My question: Do you get the feeling from watching these practices that this is what we’ll see all season from the Bucs’ offense? (ie, a very up-tempo offense with a lot of variety in play-calling trying to keep the defense off-balance)?

  15. Dwayne Cone Says:

Excitement is growing. We have to read it in print but the coaches are seeing it first hand. We just have to imagine an overthrow PICK but I have seen plenty of those to get a good visual.

Joe has a lot of other good posts that are not QB related so there is plenty for you.

    Perhaps skip reading the comments.

    Go Bucs

  16. Kgh4life Says:

These receivers are dropping too many passes. They should get on the jugs machine.

Serg, for the past few months all we’ve been hearing from the national and local media was that Mayfield was going to be our starting QB. Do you realize how horrible a thought this is for a real Bucs fan?
Its like Jimmy Johnson being told he had to drive an AMC Pacer in the Daytona 500!
We are just happy to see our number 2, Baby Brady, developing after finally having been given a chance. With Mayfield there is a cap on how far we can go. With Trask, the sky’s the limit.

ALVIN KAMARA SUSPENDED FOR THE FIRST 3 GAMES!!!

    Yes.

  20. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    Gracias, Jose.

  21. Oneilbuc Says:

If this competition was the other way around Baker Mayfield would have been named the starter by now !!

  22. Dave Pear Says:

“Trash is flushed to the right and dumps the ball off to Deven Thompkins for a loss.” Joe, was that a typo?

  23. SteveK Says:

Sounds like Trask is continuing his consistent play and improving. Keep it up and go Bucs!

  24. Rod Munch Says:

“Almost: tight end David Wells got a step on cornerback Zyon McCollum down the left sideline and Trask tries to throw long for Wells but the ball was just too long.”

How in the world does that happen? Zyon has a perfect 10 RAS score, runs like a 4.3, how does a 4th string TE beat him? Zyon was/is very much a developmental player, but that’s troubling. Hopefully he just stumbled or something.

  25. Joe Says:

Trash is flushed to the right and dumps the ball off to Deven Thompkins for a loss.” Joe, was that a typo?

    No.

  26. ATLBuc Says:

    Oneil

Behinds the scenes and among the coaches, Trask has probably been named the starter. We will probably start seeing him get more reps with the one’s. Accordingly, Wooford will probably start taking some of Mayfield’s snaps. Based on what I’m hearing from Joe, I am starting to doubt whether Mayfield will make the final roster.

  27. OBVIOUS Says:

    Hey Slerb,

So you want this man to lie to make YOU feel better? NO THANKS!

And to be VERY CLEAR, this commenter is NOT interested in playing favorites EITHER WAY! I Personally WANT and NEED a Franchise QB, NO MATTER which direction it comes from!

And if it so happens that the 2nd round pick is “The Guy”, Then You Slerb, “WILL” GET YOUR ARSE OUT OF JOE’S WAY SO HE CAN REPORT IT TO US ALL!

Put yourself in the corner and SHUT UP!

NOBODY cares about My Feelings OR Your feelings but ALL of us BUCCANEER FANS Want and NEED a Franchise QB and We want to Know HOW and WHY!

And at the end of the day, NO Matter our personal bias, WE WANT TO WIN! AND WE WANT TO WIN IT ALL!

We ALL “Want” a DYNASTY level quarterback, But CERTAINLY WE ALL NEED “At the Least”, a Franchise quarterback!!

If Trask wins it, he wins it. Same for Mayfield. END OF THE CRYING GAME and the Beginning of the WINNING GAME!

Thank you Joe for tolerating Me and All of the rest of us. And Thank you at JoeBucsFan for giving us All a place to put in our 2 cents unlike Any Other.

    GO BUCS!

  28. Rod Munch Says:

Ko Kieft had some nice catches last year as well. The reason people said he didn’t have good hands was because he had 12 catches in his entire college career – and was primarily a blocker. But in games, some of his catches have looked great. The other knock on him is his speed as he runs a 4.98 40, but if defenses don’t cover him, it doesn’t matter what his speed is. However, unless he’s dramatically increased his speed somehow, he’ll continue to be primarily a blocker, who can sneak out on a few plays and make some nice catches from time to time.

  29. StretchOMatic Says:

I love your camp reports. Thanks so much for them Joe, I appreciate all you do!

  30. Rod Munch Says:

“* Maybe a 10- or 12-year old boy in the bleachers after watching that play yelled, “What was that?””

This reminds me of when I was a kid and I went to a game, and I think it was Lars Tate was tackled behind the LOS and I thought he got faced masked so I was yelling/booing the face mask, and people around me thought I was going nuts booing Tate for losing a yard, and they were like, calm down kid, he’s not going to get 5 yards on every play. I attempted to make my case about the facemask, but I believe this is before they had video boards in the stadium, so now the people thought I was lying to cover up being called out for booing. My mental health was very affected that day.

  31. Red86 Says:

8 picks by Baker. 1 Trask. If Trask plays well in the first preseason game, then Todd Bowles should stop playing games and end the qb competition. Sad part is Wolford seems to have a better camp than Baker. Each rep with the 1st team are more valuable to the starting qb, possibly Trask.

  32. Craig Says:

    Thanks Joe.

Sounds like Trask has a better grasp of the system and isn’t screwing it up as much as Baker is.

With close to a 70% completion rate, I think, Trask is just a step below any NFL QB. Doing that in just a couple of practices is also well above average for any QB to get it.

That adds up to look like a winner.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

Excellent report yet again Joe. I think I speak for everyone in saying, you sir, are a great American.

  34. Dave Pear Says:

Trash is flushed to the right and dumps the ball off to Deven Thompkins for a loss.” Joe, was that a typo?

    No. Ouch! Kind of harsh.

  35. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It sounds to me that Joe has definitely noted a change for the better with Trask….
I still think Mayfield will get the start but there will be a quick trigger on him if he doesn’t win.

  36. Mitch Says:

ATLBuc Says: “Based on what I’m hearing from Joe, I am starting to doubt whether Mayfield will make the final roster.”

Never considered that. Would be like when Hillary was anointed as the next President.

  37. Hunter Says:

Unless something drastically changes or Trask completely fails in preseason, it would be a dang shame if Trask isn’t named starter.

  38. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Trash is flushed to the right sounds about right

  39. Tbbucs3 Says:

Ko Keift is slow, stocky and ineffective as a receiving threat. Don’t care about him practice performance, come Sundays he will disappear like Kenny Bell.

  40. BigBuc56 Says:

Does that comment you wanted to make about Evans have to do with a hamstring that typically gives him problems this time of year?

  41. Joe Says:

    * Trash is flushed to the right and dumps the ball off to Deven Thompkins for a loss.

Yes, that is a typo. Never saw the misspelling of “Trask.”

(“k” and “h” look too similar on an iPhone with Joe’s bad eyes. )

Thought you guys were asking about Thompkins losing yards.

  42. Fred McNeil Says:

Excellent notes, Joe. Do I notice vastly improved OL play this session? Past notes have been littered with QBs basically getting sacked had the action been real. Today, a few cases of QBs getting flushed, but no sacks. Hey, I love sacks too, but they bode poorly for our pass protection.
As for whoever called the notes as pro-Trask propaganda: where do you get that from? The notes are by necessity rather terse and to-the-point. There’s a few attaboys and WTFs, but mostly it’s just the quick facts. And, yess: it appears Trask is faring better. Do you actually hate Trask or are you just wanting to fluff Mayfield?

  43. Fred McNeil Says:

Arlbuc: Kamara suspended three games? That means he’s available to play against us as we come off a short rest

  44. Lt. Dan Says:

“Anyone remember last spring how the draftniks all said Kieft couldn’t catch?” Lt. Dan does.

  45. Joe Says:

Excellent notes, Joe. Do I notice vastly improved OL play this session?

Wouldn’t go there (yet). You may notice in the notes a lot of times Bucs quarterbacks are flushed or take off running. Not sure if the defense is winning or the OL is struggling.

    Thanks for the kind words.

  46. Lt. Dan Says:

Of course! Joe enjoys (the vast majority of) comments. And Joe gets good intel and some story ideas from comments. In fact, someone in this very thread gave Joe an idea for a regular feature. Not sure Joe will do it but sure will think it over.

    ———-

His contract is fully guaranteed, so there’s pretty much no chance that he’d get cut as the Bucs are counting every penny, and you’d have to take the cap hit and then replace his roster spot with another salary.

Also, while I’m no fan of Baker, lets wait and see where we are a month from now, and how Trask is doing. I hope he cleanly wins the job, since good or bad, I’d much rather see him playing, since at least we have some hope, vs Baker, where it’s a guaranteed 5-12 or 6-11 season.

    —————-

I read that original comment probably 5 times trying to figure out why it was harsh, and came up with ‘flushed’ and ‘dumps’, and thought it was being offended by toilet humor. I also didn’t notice the Trask misspelling despite looking for what was wrong.

Note to parents, if you have hopes for your kid making the NFL, change their name so it’s not letter away from being ‘trash’.

  51. gotbbucs Says:

If they signed Mayfield to light a fire under Trask, it apparently worked. Based on these daily notes, the decision should be easy.

On the other hand, if the goal is to tank the season away, Mayfield us your man.

Mayfield feels to me like a little man with a big chip and a big mouth to go with it. His journey around the NFL last year may have humbled him, but it didn’t make his passes any more accurate.

I’ll say it again, ever snap that Mayfield takes with the ones is an opportunity lost to get Trask ready for the season.

  52. Mike S Says:

    Sadly yes.

  55. Buddha Says:

Too much focus on offense Joe. How about more comments on the defense. Sure looked like our linebackers and secondary was good today. If Trask has been so good what does that say about the first string defense?

  57. JimBobBuc Says:

I have always been interested in the TE competition. Seattle ran 12 personnel a lot and targeted the TE’s. We need our TE’s to step up from last year. I was expecting Otton to be TE1 and maybe Durham or Kieft as TE2. Based on Joe’s reporting, it seems like Otton has a case of the drops and Wells is doing Well. Durham also seems inconsistent at this point and Kieft is doing well. Could we end up with Wells and Kieft as our starting TE’s ??

  58. Joe Says:

Too much focus on offense Joe. How about more comments on the defense.

When defenders make plays, Joe writes about them. Unfortunately NFL practices are not set up for defenders to make splash plays (no sacks, often no tackling.)

Besides, we know who’s starting on defense. We don’t know who is starting at the game’s most important position.

  59. Joe Says:

Durham also seems inconsistent at this point and Kieft is doing well. Could we end up with Wells and Kieft as our starting TE’s ??

It’s Otton. Drops are a concern but the guy is regularly getting open.

Remember, whole month to go before real football begins.

Mike wrote “Trask doing well is what’s best for the Bucs. They invested a high pick for him.”

Not sure what the draft pick has to do with anything. The Bucs don’t “NEED” to have a draft pick pan out. Plenty of teams over the years have drafted players in the first round who have not panned out. Yeah, if a first rounder doesn’t wind up making the team, it is a wasted pick, but those things happen al the tine in the NFL.

What they DO need is to have a serviceable QB who can run the offense, whether or not that comes from a draft pick, a free agent acquisition or a UDFA.

  67. Herbiebuc Says:

@scotty you say it don’t matter if a high pick pan out?

  68. firethecannons Says:

Thanks Joe, I could read your cliff notes every day. Trask sounds good, Mayfield is not going to get better–he is what you see now. Trask offers hope. Wait and see, Todd Bowles is too afraid to make Trask the starter, his fear will continue to lose us games, just like last year.

  69. D1 coach Says:

    @Joe,

“The Bucs begin practice using a giant beach ball (medicine ball?) during special teams drills. It appears they are using them as tackling dummies. How this helps tackling, Joe isn’t sure.”

Simple, hitting is limited. The ball is To help with technique a “beach ball” is used to practice the tackler bending his knees, wrapping up and then lifting the ball carrier off his feet. It’s no more complicated than that!

  70. garro Says:

I litterally could not finish reading the camp notes.
    Rubber balls…tackling?
I have been witness to many stupid things Bucs caches have done over the last forty plus years but this?
Armstrong has lost his everloving mind! Tackling Balls that dont hit you back is not likely to help anyone tackle a real live moving, squirming, angry running back!

Geez this really just pisses me off!

    Go Bucs!

  73. TrueBucFan Says:

Serg@ and all the fake fans who love to suck up to Baker and the idea that Kyle couldn’t grow from year two to year three and that he’s ready to lead. Y’all just want to say we tried baker so he can potentially suck and you can call yourselves getting an unproven franchise QB in next years draft that may or may not even be good.
