Learning From The Greatest

June 3rd, 2023

Bucs QB Kyle Trask.

The last two years, Bucs quarterback Kyle Trask was the No. 3 (No. 4?) quarterback on the roster. In just three months (maybe two), he could be the starter.

Trask, so the Bucs constantly remind folks, is competing with Baker Mayfield for the starting gig. Few if any national NFL analysts are buying the hard sell.

(As Joe has typed several times, whatever method the Bucs are using to sell Trask as a potential starter to NFL national broadcast partners, it’s not resonating. At all.)

So earlier this week after an underwear football program, Trask was asked how he approached Tom Brady to learn the ins and outs of playing quarterback.

Trask said he was of the opinion that it was better not to get in the way and to just observe.

“I was more just taking the approach of trying to stay back, see how it’s done and just soaking up as much as I could,” Trask said. “It was more just focused on getting the job done one day at a time when it came to gametime with that group.”

Trask emphasized that Brady didn’t give him a cold shoulder or big league him. In fact, Trask said Brady was helpful.

Brady was “really encouraging,” Trask noted. “He always had great answers for any questions I asked him. I tried to soak up as much as I could … because I knew it wasn’t going to last forever.”

In fact, Trask said Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin also helped him learn the ropes.

Trask didn’t go into detail on what he learned from Brady or what was the most important thing, though Trask did mention he learned preparation is critical.

Once the worthless preseason games roll along, perhaps it is then that we will see what Trask picked up from Brady.

    Go Trask!

Joe – get it through your head that nobody who is a Bucs fan cares what anybody in the media thinks of anything, including you.

What the Bucs fans care about is what is actually produced on the field, which of course nobody can predict, nobody, no matter how many times you tell us and yourself that what you think is somehow a version of reality.

That’s why they play the games.

Little harsh Duane. Many of us care about Joes thoughts on this site. Don’t always agree, but are thought provoking. Just like some of the commentors as well. If it wasn’t for Joe Bucs fan, there would be little to nothing about Bucs lore this time of year. Try to follow other sites and they are woefully lacking.
    Go Bucs.

If this is the case Joe, perhaps the preseason isn’t so worthless….

  6. BuckeyeBuck Says:

He probably learned more from Griffin than the other 2. Brady has always been a jerk, Gabbert probably saw him as competition for a roster spot. Dude never got a chance. Healthy scratch your R2 pick for a 30 plus year old backup? That changes this year. Old boy will be throwing with the 1s and 2s, not a bunch of PS players. He might not win the QB competition but he will grow as a player

  7. BuckeyeBuck Says:

Plus, I have a short list of QB’s I consider “the greatest”, and Mr Brady isn’t on it. Archie Manning, Fran Tarkenton, Dan Marino.

  8. Beej Says:

I’ve never seen any of Brady’s former teammates diss him

  9. HC Grover Says:

Trask is better than Mayfield. This means Bowles will start Mayfield.

  10. Craig Says:

I hope Trask really lights it up.

I am not sure it will mean anything, because the Bowles cleaner is probably going to call the “experience” card and anoint Mayfly.

If you notice I did not say good experience because Mayfly’s one decent season was a fluke and is not his normal game.

  11. K2 Says:

Hopefully, both QBs develop. Also, I’m assuming Mayfield is the starter…based on experience. I believe previous coaches did a very poor job of developing Trask. Hopefully, at some point we see why they drafted the man. Given that he was given no opportunity to develop and treated with tremendous indifference…I still don’t understand why they drafted him. It’s now his 3rd year with the Bucs and he finally gets to practice?

  12. Permanent Moderation Says:

I wonder if Trask would have faired better with another team where he could have had a chance to develop his game. Putting him in the Bucs cellar did nothing for him.

  13. firethecannons Says:

Joe this time it is clear the “worthless” preseason games will have value. It is when we learn if either of these 2 QB can stand out. That is what preseason is all about. It gives the rooks and the wannabes an opportunity to make bank.

  14. lambchop Says:

Trask obviously hasn’t wowed the coaches. It’s been put out that he’s a slow learner. What more do you Gator homers need to hear?

It’s the same reason Jordan Love sat behind Rodgers. It’s the same reason Joe Montana’s kids didn’t get an NFL job handed to them. You have to show something or wait your turn while a legend finishes his carer. You know, like how Rodgers sat behind Favre. Trask was drafted as Brady’s successor because of his college resume.

But, the single most vote of confidence the Bucs gave Trask is not re-signing Blaine Gabbert. But, Mayfield was available and he was cheap. So, it doesn’t matter who starts the season, it only matters who finishes the season. When your job is on the line, you’re not just going to hand the job to a kid because you drafted him, especially when he doesn’t wow you.

So, I hope the best one wins the job and keeps it, because it means we will win more games with him than we’ll lose – hopefully.

I can speak for myself, Duane, thanks.

“Once the worthless preseason games roll along, perhaps it is then that we will see what Trask picked up from Brady.”

Those games are not worthless. Clearly. Since we are going to need them to see who our QB will be.

    BuckeyeBuck Says
“Plus, I have a short list of QB’s I consider “the greatest”, and Mr Brady isn’t on it.”

If Brady is not on the top of that list…your list is wrong. This isn’t about opinions, it is about facts.

“Trask obviously hasn’t wowed the coaches. It’s been put out that he’s a slow learner.”

Put out by media, not the team. Think about that.

Not a college fan, but here’s why I want Trask to start: We already know that Mayfield will fail. Trask is untested in game time.

    It’s really that simple.

Even if Trask turns out to be average…at least after we see that, we’ll know he can be our career backup for a while.

If he turns out to be really good…then we can draft something other than QB next year.

If Baker turns out to win the competition we know in real games he barely wins 40% of his games. That being the case…do you think he’ll remain as a backup for years? Probably not.

So we NEED to see what Trask can do.

  20. Bruce arians fanny pack Says:

I saw on nfl network when they did the bucs schedule predictions and adam rank had us starting 0-5, 1-6….. its very possible but if thats the case i see no way tod bowles is not fired and mayfield is benched by then, i think we just tank at that point start trask and go for williams at the number one pick.

  21. Buc4evr Says:

Not a Trask fan but hope he gets a fair chance to compete. I think the coaches all did a horrible job of getting him in the position to start, knowing full well that the house of cards was going to collapse the day Brady retired. Arians and Bowles did nothing to develop Trask and now the Bucs will pay for it. Kind of stupid, like standing in the tracks while a train 25 miles away and traveling 5 mph runs over you.

  22. Hodad Says:

I’m not sure Bowles will have the final say on who will be the starting QB. Canales should have a say in it you would think? How about Licht? Check his history with second round picks, he don’t give up on them easy, and Trask is getting his first chance to show finally. Having Trask win the job, and playing well would be quite a feather in Licht’s cap. If the Bucs win the division lead by Trask, just hand executive of the year to Licht.

  23. SufferingSince76 Says:

Preseason has become relevant again. At least in Tampa.

  24. SteveK Says:

    BuckeyeBuck,

On what planet, measurement, metric, core belief, or philosophical belief is Tom Brady not the greatest QB of all time?

    Please share said list!

I’m a buckeye fan, and even TB12’s greatness is blatantly obvious. He’s on a level of Gretzky, Jordan, Russell, Ruth. No
    Doubt. Change my mind.

    “He’s a jerk”. Lmao he’s a bonafide champion’s champion.

  25. Joe Says:

Joe – get it through your head that nobody who is a Bucs fan cares what anybody in the media thinks of anything, including you.

The Bucs very much do. VERY much do. It’s why they have a marketing department, a media relations department, and spend millions on their web team.

  26. Joe Says:

Put out by media, not the team.

And just who do you think “the media” is getting this from, the Tampa Bay Rowdies?

Hell, Clyde Christensen talked about this on the record — Trask’s own position coach! — and the damn video was on Buccaneers.com and it probably is still on YouTube.

  27. Beej Says:

Trask was basically red-shirted for 2 years, doesn’t mean he can’t/won’t succeed. It appears he hasn’t been wasting his time

  28. Crickett Baker Says:

I have never thought preseason games were worthless. I have mentioned before that when I lived in Tampa, and for OVER 20 years I had a “thing” with my friends that after preseason I would pick a team that was going to be in the SB. I was right all but two times! I missed on the Vikings when they had an undefeated season and then lost their final playoff game. I picked the Chargers (was it 1995?) and everyone laughed t me until they were in the SB and my friends were amazed. When I moved to AR I couldn’t watch enough preseason games so I gave it up. Note last year we LOST all those games and you saw what the rest of the season looked like.

Here is hoping we do well in preseason and no one can convince me that those games are worthless.

  29. Fred McNeil Says:

He Duane, we do care what the Joes think to some fairly substantial degree. Most of us care quite a bit about what our fellow posters think too. This time of year there is very little solid football to chew the fat about so Joe reports what he can glean and reposts some of what the other half million pundits have gleaned and speculated and we all bounce around our own thoughts along with our JBF friends pass the off-season. Some share hope. Some share pessimism. It’s all good.

  30. Fred McNeil Says:

There are no Buc sites with a discussion group like this one. The articles are consise and generally avoid the Ph.D math mumbo-jumbo gobbledegook a few writers like to babble so as to appear knowledgeable.

    Thanks, JBF!

  31. Fred McNeil Says:

I share a little of both.

  32. G-Buc Says:

If Mr. 7 Rings doesn’t top your list of greatest QB’s…

What the hell is purpose of trying to win!
That’s why you try your best.
That’s why you work to be the best at whatever your trade.

If substandard … anything… works for you … ok.
I guess it’s an easy existence!

Sounds like a blast! That whole settling thing!
No thanks! Give me a challenge! 52 yrs young and looking for more of them!

I take Brady all day, every day and twice on Sunday!

  33. BucaneroJim Says:

Some suggest Canales helped turn Geno Smith’s career around and therefore by some miracle could turn Mayfield’s career around… then, why not just stick with Gabbert ( a year older than Geno). Since 2019, Smith and Gabbert both had 3 years with the Seahawks and Bucs respective. Gabbert was familiar with the Bucs. Sure, Gabbert’s stats are worse than both Mayfield and Smith and Mayfield is more mobile, but bad is bad anyway.

That said, I’d like a miracle from Mayfield and/or Trask.

  34. David Says:

    Joe/Media;
Your takes on OTA’s are not seriously taken since you are only allowed to see 30% of the Bucs during OTA’s.

    Joe,
If Trask was a slow learner and couldn’t even beat Gabbert then why did Bucs let Gabbert go and they didn’t draft a qb when they had a chance.
Trask was red shirted due to irrational decisions by the coaches.

    Joe,
I agree with media not buying Bucs claiming a true competition for starting job as they are predicting Bucs record with Baker at the helmet on day one. Todd B. wants Baker to start and utilizing Trask as a motivation tool to push Baker. However it will backfire on him when Trask ends up surprising him and the media.

  35. Joe Says:

If Trask was a slow learner and couldn’t even beat Gabbert then why did Bucs let Gabbert go and they didn’t draft a qb when they had a chance.

Good question. Sort of points (as other pieces of breadcrumbs) that the Bucs are positioning to draft one next year. You also have to remember Gabbert was a free agent and the Bucs do have an investment in Trask.

Todd B. wants Baker to start and utilizing Trask as a motivation tool to push Baker. However it will backfire on him when Trask ends up surprising him and the media.

If Mayfield needs motivation then he’s already toast. It’s pretty clear this is very likely Mayfield’s last chance to be a starting quarterback in the NFL for the near future. He plays well, he signs a nice contract somewhere, probably here in Tampa Bay. He doesn’t play well, he’s a backup unless or until he proves he should start.

  36. Joe Says:

    Fred McNeil:

Thank you! Your comment is exactly what Joe set out to do back in 2008 when this site was launched. We purposely stay away from the silly acronym stats that tout “expected” or “above.”

  37. Statguy Says:

I think it’s worth noting that Canales came from Carrol, whom after signing Matt Flynn to a big contract ultimately started 3rd pick Russel Wilson. Whoever is ready will be out there. If Mayfield starts the season we should still see Trask at some point given his injury history. The best thing that could happen is we see what we have from both during the season before the offseason

  38. Wild Bill Says:

Trask is younger, better looking and not hampered by injuries. It would be great if after being ignored and given virtually no game time experience he should shock the team, coaches and fans and somehow outshine a injured qb who could not hang onto his job because he was only mediocre and inconsistent. The Bucs are in this situation because they thought Brady could play forever. Last season Brady had lost his MOJO and they failed to see what if anything Trask could do. So now we have a third year ROOKIE and an inconsistent, injured qb whose team was happy to get rid of him. Such a masterful example of how not to prepare for the high probability that Brady would not still be great at age 50! This situation is entirely on the owners and coaches who forgot to anticipate and plan for a Brady replacement that happened sooner than expected. Last year was misery for a long term Bucs fans. Hope Trask and the new draft pics do well!!!

“It’s why they have a marketing department, a media relations department, and spend millions on their web team.”

Which is all PR department BS and why I have not visited their web site except to get a player roster occasionaly.

They are wasting alot of money Joe. Many Bucs fans are much smarter than the Bucs organization, Bowles, and quite frankly you, give us credit for. We do not necessarily buy into the hype.

I come to this site to get unbiased coverage of the Bucs. Agree or disagree at least it is not the same lame ass crap as the other so called sports journalists….Mostly.
