“That Burst Is Ridiculous!”

May 1st, 2023

Bucs’ sixth-round draft pick OLB Jose Ramirez possesses a crazy-quick get-off.

Cynthia Frelund was excited Saturday night. Who got her so worked up? Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.

Well, sort of. The Bucs’ last draft choice Saturday (late in Round 6) was Eastern Michigan outside linebacker/edge rusher Jose Ramirez. And envisioning Ramirez working with Bucs coach Todd Bowles got Frelund fired up!

Speaking on a draft wrapup segment during “Total Access” Saturday night, the NFL Network’s stats queen was asked to select her favorite pick of the more than 100 players selected on Day 3 of the draft.

She chose Ramirez.

“That burst is ridiculous!” Frelund gasped. “His first three steps are so fast, I don’t know what they were feeding him there in Ypsilanti, Mich.”

Frelund marveled at Ramirez’s jump off the snap and predicted Ramirez will be the NFL’s next big thing.

“The Bucs got a great one,” Frelund declared. “Maybe you don’t know him because he’s from a smaller school … but you will know his name later.”

Ramirez had 12 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss last season for the 9-4 Eagles.

Here is something that backs up Frelund’s claim: In February at the combine, Ramirez’s 10-yard split on the shuttle drill was 1.53 seconds. That, Joe learned, is the kind of speed you expect from someone like Dwight Freeney.

The Bucs loaded up on defense in the draft, including the front-seven. Speed and athletic freaks.

No excuses, Todd Bowles. Time to prove you can mold rookies into feared pass rushers.

Yes, you better believe Joe is fired up to see Ramirez!

Sounds too good to be true. Can’t wait to see the rookies in action

One can not knock a wink and a smile from Cynthia. She made me a believer almost as much as Kay Adams would.

Hey Joes, thanks for excellent draft coverage, the best. Props also to Ira and Sean for their great takes and intel.

  3. Joe in Michigan Says:

Hopefully Shaq Barrett will show this kid the ropes, like Von Miller did for him.

  4. Onetime007 Says:

Right now I don’t think we should be worrying about Shaq Bennett showing this guy the ropes. We should be worrying about him as a dad right now. I can’t even imagine losing a child.

  5. Buc'n Enough Says:

Well…McCoys claim to fame was his quick “get-off”…
Does not translate to success in the NFL

    ^^^^^^
    Did I say “right now”?

  7. Stanglassman Says:

He was expected to go much earlier in the draft some had him a late 2nd to early 3rd round pick. This could be the best value pick of the Bucs in this years draft. Someone to definitely keep an eye on.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

That’s encouraging to hear a 6th round pick is a steal…….we usually don’t keep picks beyond round 4……this year I think it will be different.

Because of the money we need to keep all of our 9 draft picks if we can.

  9. Duane Says:

Joe – stop, just stop it with the “no more excuses”. Coach Bowles has never made any excuses, period. You created a straw man, and it’s dumb.

Every single person in the NFL – coaches, players, front office people – are constantly under pressure to perform. Pressure from themselves, from others on the teams, from the fans. It is rare indeed for anyone in the NFL to make excuses. because excuses simply don’t matter.

Joe in Michigan, I agree. After a few months of grieving, and granted he will grieve his whole life, he will be chomping at the bit for the distraction of football I would guess. But everyone’s timeline is unique so we’ll see how that pans out. I knew what you meant.

That said, the ladies really like our picks! First Kay with Calijah, now Cindy with Jose.

    Thanks, it’s a terrible tragedy.

I think Bucs undrafted free agent pickup, Sean Tucker was another gem that was unexpected. Some had Tucker rated as the #4 rated RB. He ran a ridiculous 4.33 and a 41.5 inch vertical jump.

Great job Joes, Sean and Ira !!!

The more I’ve read and watched of Jose Ramirez, the more I like this pick. TBH, looking forward to hearing about how they take to camp and I wanna hear what Tristan Wirfs will have to say about both Ramirez & Diaby. Common observation looking at his scouting reports from different sources, is Ramirez may struggle as a run defender early in career, but what made him worth drafting is his “natural” ability to press the pocket with his athleticism and motor.

2nd half of our preseason games should be an interesting watch this summer.

  15. Mike Says:

Speed kills! Glad the Bucs are emphasizing getting faster. Sounds like a great pickup in the 6th round!

  16. Bosch Says:

    …the 5-3 Eagles…. Was that a typo? They only played 8 games?

  17. Bucsfan13 Says:

Asking players how they feel about the skills of their teammates is absolutely useless. You won’t get any truth from them, nor should you. We heard absolute raves about Goedeke from his teammates last year. How did that work out? Wirfs is the ultimate team guy. He’s not gonna give you the unvarnished truth. The players production on the field will always give you truth.

  18. Dooley Says:

“Asking players how they feel about the skills of their teammates is absolutely useless.”

When two guys line up across from each other, with one being a rookie and the other being a one of the best OTs in the NFL, it may be worth a little something to listen to what Wirfs thinks of guarding any of the new guys. If it isn’t important to you, say that, but useless is kind of ignorant, because all through the rest of the spring and summer, reporters are going to be asking vets about their first impressions of rookies all across the league. Way to find an isolated example to generalize the usefulness of hearing feedback from players, about their teammates.

  19. Joe Says:

the 5-3 Eagles…. Was that a typo? They only played 8 games?

Good catch. That was MAC conference record. They buried the overall record.

So much for going to the MAC website for what Joe thought was clear information.

  20. garro Says:

I think we may have some worried veteran players at One Buc.

  21. garro Says:

A few of our picks are at positions where the starters have um… underperformed.

  22. Goatfarmer Says:

The draft, and then the UDFA signings…….might be Jason Licht’s best work yet.

Totally agree with Joes, now let’s see if Bowels can teach and develop a rookie defender. Fortunately Licht hired a professional from Dallas who seems to know how to do that. Let’s go, Edge.

  23. SlyPirate Says:

    Meh

I watched his tape and saw nothing special.

  24. Dooley Says:

“The draft, and then the UDFA signings…….might be Jason Licht’s best work yet.”

2 years and 363 days way too early to be talking like this, we don’t even know if this draft or last years draft will be as good as the 2019s draft, but keep cooking Fozzy lol

  25. Herbiebuc Says:

    Polk County 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿

  26. larrd Says:

I thought his tape looked great, but then he looks 6’5″ in it and he’s only 6’2.” The Midget Athletic Conference, I guess!

  27. Fred McNeil Says:

I think the kid will be a true diamond-in-the-rough. He’s not real fast but he’s blindingly quick. They say he’s a liability against the run, but teams seldom run on third and forever.

@Bucnenough: If the kid is limited to McCoys level of success I’d consider that stupendous for a sixth round pick. If he just stays healthy he’ll probably be amazing.

  28. Onetime007 Says:

Joe in Michigan you did say it “right now.”
I get what you meant, but referencing his name the day after his daughter died other than to say (condolences/deepest sympathy etc.) is distasteful.

Maybe 50 years ago there was a swimming class for infants and toddlers in St. Petersburg. Every now and then they would be featured on one of the local news shows. At such a young age they don’t panic being in a liquid state, like the womb. The babies learn to roll over on their backs to catch a breath. There should be classes everywhere, but in particular in Florida. Losing a child to a preventable accident has to be the absolute worst. My sympathy to the family.
