Peter King Floats Dubious Name For Next Bucs Quarterback

February 19th, 2023

Titans QB Ryan Tannehill.

Face it, folks. The NFL world is not sold on Kyle Trask starting for your Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023.

Oh, Trask very well could start for the Bucs. His former position coach believes he should (if the Bucs don’t retain Blaine Gabbert). Outside of Tampa Bay? Good luck finding someone riding the Trask train.

One guy who certainly has not boarded that train is none other than combine-fatigued, Bavarian pretzel-chomping, teeth-brushing, haircut-fascinated, Circa-bewildered, elf-rattled, green-lawns-frowning, soggy-socks-wearing, Daylight-Savings-Time-scared, crossword-puzzle-puzzled, Elon-Musk-peeved, Barstool-Sports-triggered, almond-milk-sipping, hot-dog-eating-contest-protesting, mock-draft-scowlingL.L.-Bean-wearing, tennis fans’ advocate, Second Amendment abolitionistMike-Florio-arguingparrot-insensitivechewing-with-his-mouth-opensoup-gulpingCalifornia-train-romancing, anti-football proliferationouthouse-admiringairline-nappingsteerage-flyingYogi Berra-worshipingurinal-picture-takingvideo-game-playingTaylor-Swift-listeningpickpocket-thwartingBucs-uniform-frowning, Allie LaForce-smitten, Big-Ten-Network-hatingpedestrian-bumpingolive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerking, craft-beer-chugging, cricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïvebaseball-box-score-readingNPR-honkfilthy-hotel-stayingfight-instigatingbarista-training, Budweiser-tolerantbaseball-scorecard-keeping, pasta-feasting, vomit-dodging scrooge, Kay-Adams-following, Coors-Light-souring, pineapple-upside-down-cake-eating social activist and NFL insider of NBC Sports fame, Peter King.

King seemed to scoff recently at the notion the Bucs will turn to Trask this fall during his appearance on PFT Live, hosted by the great Mike Florio, creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk.

How convinced is King that Trask is not the guy? Well, King floated a name the Bucs may be interested in. And it should give Bucs fans the shivers.

King invoked Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

“Kyle Trask, we know less than zero about right now,” King said. “So clearly Tampa Bay is going to be in the market for a veteran quarterback, whether that is a quarterback closer to the end than the beginning. Whether that is someone like Ryan Tannehill or whether they decide to get into the Derek Carr stakes.”

For those who defensively screamed that Tannehill is under contract with the Titans, Joe understands but look at the details. Per Spotrac.com, there is an out in Tannehill’s contract that could save Tennessee loads of cash. How much? Turron Davenport of BSPN says it’s $17.8 million in cap space if he’s cut.

Also, Davenport quotes new Tennessee general manager Ran Carthon not giving Tannehill the dreaded vote of confidence recently.

“I still need more time to evaluate and make those decisions,” Carthon said. “This is a quarterback-driven league and people are hired and fired every day over that position.”

Joe guesses the Titans might like to get out from Tannehill’s $27 million salary for 2023.

Joe thinks it would be asinine to trade for Tannehill, short of Tannehill reworking his contract to a much more Bucs-friendly pact.

However, if the choice of quarterback comes down to dudes walking the street like Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold, perhaps Tannehill is the way to go if the Bucs are serious about winning?

Yes Bucs fans, the team has sunk to this level.

Hey Joe, Fameous Jameous may be looking for a job any day now!

  2. Winky Says:

    Make lemonade, Bucs.

    Go Bucs!!!

  3. Scott Says:

I like Tannehill. He had no receivers this year but he looked good with AJ Brown

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Ryan Tannehill…that is a name I have not heard mentioned. Hmmn. Not sure how I feel about that.

I don’t buy it, but I guess its a stone that should be looked under.

  6. Onetrickpony Says:

I wouldn’t mind Tannehill over Mayfield and some others.

  7. NEfan Says:

Tannehill, being from the AFC he is NOT good, AJ Brown was handcuffed by this guy. Great D, Henry Jones, Brown and he couldn’t make it happen. Another $30M overrated QB.

  8. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Tanny looked great with an elite receiver in AJ Brown. How about having the dynamic duo of Evans and Godwin? I think it would be a great fit. But there’s still that part of me that would rather see what we have in Trask, and possibly lose enough to end up in the top 5 picks in 2024 for Caleb or Drake.

  9. BucsFan81 Says:

None of these QB will make a difference. Start Trask and see what you have. We will be re building next year anyways when Bowles is fired. If your going to sign one of these veteran re trends then you should just sign Winston back at least he has chemistry with the players on this team.

  10. View from 132 Says:

Starting Trask is a boring story and won’t get many clicks. But it’s probably what will happen.

  11. OHBucFan Says:

Ho hum, all these experts. Not one of them saw the 49ers winning with Mr. Irrelevant. Out of 32 teams, only 8 were playing with top 10 1st round picks at the end of the season. 2 of those were Mayfield and Darnold. Goff another. Winston and Mariota, two other “can’t miss” players were healthy scratches. Again, what do these experts know about Trask or the draft board?
Personally, I want to see Hooker drafted and give Trask a chance to start and see what he learned in the traditional QB tutorial way. Of course that’s probably a waste of time since his tutor was a 6th round pick from 20 years ago. What’d he know???

  12. SB~LV Says:

With all of this hate and Licht looking for another QB if I was Trask I would ask to be released.

  14. mark2001 Says:

Jameis will never be back….get over it. Sean Payton even knew he didn’t have it when he “retired”. And you don’t go back where they fired you after five years of intense scrutiny by both teams..

Joe…how dare you rain on the Suzy Sunshine parade.

  15. Allbuccedup Says:

Tannehill will get mauled with our O-line.

  16. Tye Says:

I’d take Tannehill over Geno Smith BUT that’s about it!

  17. NEfan Says:

OH Buc@ lightening in a bottle. Shannon conjured up an offense to protect him from failing, until he did.

  18. Zoocomics Says:

    @Jeebs, I agree.
There is literally not one re-tread Vet QB that this message board would all support. Somehow based on the opinions of many of you, this organization can do better no matter what…oh and things would be sooo different if we’d fired Bowles. That’s not reality, even with another coach, it doesn’t change the QB climate nor our cap situation. Never been a fan of most of the QBs that are connected to the Bucs, however I’ve never seen ANY of those QBs in a Tampa Uniform, nor throw to the weapons we have on the field. And now with a new offensive coordinator, who knows whether we can shake whatever talent is left in any of these Vets that may be available to us. But our division should make things interesting considering every one of them is on rebuild and/or has a new coach. I’m hoping at the very least we’re competitive. Let’s all stay a little positive as we venture into the offseason and see what this org does to compete.

Btw, I still love how so many of you love blasting our 8-9 “losing” record in Bowles first season as head coach, which is so f@cking childish, in that any one that saw that Falcons game knows if we kept our starters in, we win that game, period. YET we lose any key players in that game and we’re calling Bowles a f@cking idiot for playing starters when we already had the division and playoffs locked up. You cannot have it both ways.

  19. Stebobucsfan Says:

Don’t know much ago Tannahill as far as age and stats Will research. I still think Tampa’s best deal is to roll with Trask and J Brisset this season unless they can pull off a major QB deal , Just my opinion and as I’ve said many times, opinions are like rear ends, everybody has one. What I am really hoping is Canales and who ever his QB coach is can really develop young QBs At some point the Bucs are gonna have to draft and develop a QB are they are gonna forever be in cap trouble

  20. BucBoy Says:

King saying “Kyle Trask, we know less than zero about right now,” is not “scoffing” at Trask. It’s him saying he doesn’t anything about Trask. He hasn’t coached Trask for two years. Joe once again hears what he wants to hear.

  21. SKBucsFan Says:

It continues to amaze me how little comprehension some on here have about budgeting. Sure, sign a $30 million veteran. Now cut $85 million from your team …that means 6 to 8 high priced real players have to be let go. Now that is just to break even. So other free agents have to leave so you can replace them, and the proven vetrans ypu had to cut. That leaves you no money to sign your rookies so a few more have to go.

This could all work if we had 8 draft picks in the first 4 rounds. But we don’t. We have 3! And trading a few high priced veterans aren’t going to get much in way of picks. So what’s the solution?…oh I know sign a $30 million QB .

Show me this new magical math. One that doesn’t involve continuing to mortgage your future for years to cone while you dwell in mediocrity. I’m eager to learn.

  22. BucBoy Says:

Allbuccedup Says: “With all of this hate and Licht looking for another QB if I was Trask I would ask to be released.”

Agree. I have sources inside two teams and they tell me Trask would be snatched up immediately. It’s interesting that for all the daily hate Joe and the Haters throw at Trask, they never say the Bucs should trade or release him.🤔

  23. John Says:

While I think it would be good to draft someone like Hooker in the later rounds, and create competition, Trask deserves an opportunity. Playing with scrubs didn’t give him an opportunity to showcase anything, and his college numbers were very impressive. We need to focus on the trenches.

  24. Dooley Says:

Absolutely no to Ryan “thats not my job” Tannehill, keep that bozo away from our locker room dude is like the anti-Jeff Garcia.

  25. Dom Says:

Another QB that will land us in QB purgatory as well as having a bad team. No thanks. Unless the QB is considered a top 10 QB I’ll pass. If you have Tannehill, Carr, or Jimmy G as your QB in the playoffs you most likely got the worst QB in the playoffs or one of the worst QB’s in the playoffs. Good luck wining a championship with one of the worst QB in the playoffs. It has happened but rarely and usually with a dominate squad. Like a 2000 Ravens defense type of dominance. This team doesn’t have that anymore. They aren’t going to out talent playoff teams this year. Maybe in a couple years if they draft good and play their cards right.

Starting Trask and it working (which I highly doubt) or Trask failing, resulting in us getting a top pick to get Caleb Williams or Drake Maye is the best option for the team and it’s future because you get a QB on a cheap rookie contract. A QB on a cheap contract is what the team needs with its current cap situation. It will allow you to extend our cornerstones pieces (Wirfs, Winfield, Dean) and then go out and get some quality free agents in 2024 and 2025. This should get an evaluation year and seeing who else is worth keeping long term when the ship gets turned around

  26. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

Start Trask a d draft qb, no retreads

  27. Alanbucsfan Says:

How many Aggies does it take….

  28. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Trask deserves a chance to win an open competition at QB , and he will get it. Trask would beat out Tannehill , Ryan is more of a problem than a solution.

  29. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

BTW Peter King is a freaking Dbag.

  30. Couch Fan Says:

To be honest I dont care who they sign. Just as long as he isnt handed the starting job like Lovie handed McCown.

  31. Defense Rules Says:

Leave it to the media to make a mountain out of a molehill. QB is an issue, but it’s FAR from the only issue the Bucs face at present. And it’s actually one of the simplest to solve.

We’ve got Kyle Trask under contract for 2 more years. He NEVER was going to be the #2 behind Brady (who obviously felt much more comfortable with Gabbert behind him). So let’s have a TRUE competition for the starter’s role and see what we have.

Add Blaine Gabbert back into the mix. He knows the team, and before everyone just dismisses him out of hand, remember that he was the 10th pick in the 1st Rnd of the 2011 draft. MAYBE in the right offense he can be resurrected like Geno Smith was. He played for $2.3 mil last year, and I kinda doubt there’ll be dozens of teams clamoring for his services this year.

Also add at least 1 more veteran QB to the mix. There are 28 Unrestricted Free Agent QBs on the market right now not named Tom Brady. The only 1 who made over $8.2 mil in 2022 was Derek Carr. There were 20 FA QBs who made under $5.0 mil. Surely we can afford 1 of them.

Bucs should also consider drafting a QB in the late rounds (5-7) IF one falls who peaks our interest. You never know, we MIGHT get lucky & find a pearl among the oysters.

Beyond all that though, 2024 supposedly promises a banner crop of QBs that the Bucs could take advantage of IF 2023 turns out to be a real bummer. Rather than just jump at a meh ‘solution’ for 2023 who ends up getting us into deeper salary CAP hot water, let’s rebuild our team THEN look for the franchise QB to run it. Who knows, MAYBE that person has been right underneath our noses all along.

  32. Cobraboy Says:

Sorry, Peter, but YOU don’t know anything about Trask. I suspect the Bucs organization does. for better or worse.

I would rather not see a piddlin’ spendy QB at OBP. Fix the cap first, and get younger and faster.

  33. Voice of Truth Says:

Only is he is cut, don’t use draft capital and certainly done take on 27mil for him

The ultimate game manager for years, that doesn’t win super bowls

  34. Beeej Says:

Everyone thought Tannehill was a bust until the starter in TN got hurt and Tannehill lit it up. I’d reckon him to be a middle-of-the-road qb, would be ok if he didn’t cost too much

  35. Bucove81 Says:

We are good let’s Sink we gotta go for Caleb💯

  36. Brian Says:

Kendon Hooker! Look at the film!

  37. westernbuc Says:

Tannehill would’ve been better if he had anyone to throw to

  38. Bucove81 Says:

    Junk

  39. Pewter Power Says:

    Hell to the no

  40. Jfan Says:

I would hope that whatever money the Bucs have after making cuts and reworking contracts they spend it on the defense and Oline not overpay for some old Past his prime QB.

  41. BucBoy Says:

Dom Says: “Starting Trask and it working (which I highly doubt)”

What do you base that on? Trask looking good in the first and third preseason games? Trask posting the highest quarterback RTG of the three Bucs quarterbacks in the preseason finale against the Colts? Trask getting only 2 series at the end of the regular season Falcons game and getting a first down by throwing, when Gabbert played the entire second half (except Trask’s 2 series) and got zero first downs?

  42. Duane Says:

This team still needs a veteran backup to go into the season, so yes, they will have to create more cap space for that player like it or not. Many agents out there putting spin to get their players paid. Not sure what Trask has to offer, but there has to be someone else in case of injury, if Trask struggles, or if he needs competition to get ready. Contrary to BA’s ramblings last season, this team is not going to start the season with Trask and Gabbert. Although some fans want to see a clean sweep and a cap reset, thats not how you run a business, and they are going to squeeze every last ounce of success out of this roster before moving on. A division title and playoff appearance is very attainable, and I am certain the Glazers will be fine with the fan base complaining that we arent getting far enough into the playoffs versus what we have commonly experienced in the past.

  43. sasquatch Says:

If the guy will play for less than 10 million, call him a candidate. If not, see ya later.

  44. HC Grover Says:

Gabbert on the cheap is the call.

It’s not that there’s evidence Trask will suck, it’s merely that there’s no evidence he’ll light it up. If Trask could do it, I’d be a happy dude, and a lot of Bucs free agents would be also

  47. Rand Says:

If Winston would come in for backup money I wouldn’t be opposed to letting him backup Trask.

  48. Mark2001 Says:

Rand. You want a qb controversy? Uf ex qb and fsu ex? Wow.

  49. JimbobBucsFan Says:

As I don’t watch college football regularly anymore I have to research the draft class as best I can. At this point I would like to see us get a solid OLB/DE in the first round. Hendon Hooker intrigues me so far. I would be happy to see us take a QB like him in the second round. In the third I am expecting us to find a decent CB. If we hit on two of the three we will have had a good draft.

Since Todd Bowles has said we are not rebuilding I take it that we are trying to find our way back into the playoffs this year. We don’t appear to be trying to tank. The odds of us finding “the guy” at QB in next year’s draft are very long know matter what we do this season.

  50. JimbobBucsFan Says:

    long now

  51. JimbobBucsFan Says:

long now no matter (Do you what my brain did?)

  52. ScottyMack Says:

And how does that solve any problem for Tennessee? They would be without a QB, there are no truly elite QB free agents (and those that are pretty good cost far more than Tannehill to get). Plus, even then, there are still no receivers there.

  53. Rand Says:

    Mark2001

True …but myself I’m not a specific college fanboy. I like all FL teams but you are right, there would be a lot of whining zealots.

  54. BuckyPhillips Says:

Trask is perfect qb to tank with and regroup. Sold our soul for title now gotta actually coach and manage a franchise

  55. SC Bucs Fan Says:

At what point does the stupid introduction to Peter King become so lame it’s dropped

  56. Craig Says:

Every QB that can come to the Bucs via free agency has flaws.

Each of them needs a team built to minimize their flaw. This coming Bucs team does not have an identity they can work with, so it will just be wasted money.

Trask is an unknown, but he might understand what little identity the Bucs have. Maybe he can build something here, maybe not, but he will be the best to give it a do.

Bring back Gabbert for cheap and have a real competition, not the crap Trask had to deal with as a gopher for Tom Brady. This will be the first big step into a new era.

  57. Dom Says:

    @BucBoy

Why did you get so heated lmao? Like are we really bringing up evidence that he could be good by mentioning pre season or comparing him to Gabbert who isn’t a franchise QB either lol. The coaches haven’t given him rave reviews other than he works hard which is great. You need more than that to be a franchise QB though. Also, just going by history, more 2nd round picks at QB don’t pan out than they do. With multiple coaches saying Trask is a slow learner and never being an NFL starter, I’d say it’s fair to say that Trask will most likely struggle this year as a first year starter learning a new system. I’d love to give him the opportunity to prove me wrong though. Also this offensive line is highly over-rated at the moment. They only gave up so little sacks because of Brady and the emphasis on the screen game. No way Trask is going to process the game as good as Brady. He doesn’t have Bradys pocket presence or pocket motility either. Expect our sacks given up to be up this year..

  58. Eric Says:

I would be really convinced if one of the so called experts mentioned how high they were on Brock PURDY after the draft!

  59. Rod Munch Says:

Tannehill would be a terrible pick. Zero upside, already proven with the best running game in the NFL that he’s no good. There wouldn’t be a reason in the world you’d bring him in unless you’re just going to be happy winning 6 games, vs 4 games with Trask.

  60. Brent Clark Says:

Jacoby Brissett That’s who we need.

  61. Beej Says:

“Also, just going by history, more 2nd round picks at QB don’t pan out than they do.”

Heck, barely 40% of FIRST round picks work out, as the Jets and Bills can attest to

  62. Brent Clark Says:

Jacoby Brissett he has the arm, has the legs drafted by NE backed up Brady so I think nice transition QB for us. Was a great QB at NC State.

  63. unbelievable Says:

People keep saying “he looked great with AJ Brown”

    No.

He looked great with AJ Brown AND THE BEST RUNNING BACK IN THE LEAGUE WHO IS BUILT LIKE NO ONE ELSE.

Derrick Henry is what drove that offense. Make no mistake.

  64. ghostofrodjones Says:

Going to more of a run based offense

Do we need 2 WRs making over $36 mill(cap hit is much higher)?

  65. steele Says:

Tannehill is not terrible. The question is $. Funds should not be wasted during the Bowles tank/mediocrity era.

  66. Bucs Are Lost Says:

Welcome back to 16 games, all at 1pm. No more #PrimeTimeBucs or Bucs being in any commercials. All that retired with Brady.

Arians is a coach. You’re not.

    Thanks for playing, though!

  68. BucBoy Says:

Dom Says: “With multiple coaches saying Trask is a slow learner”

Really? Please give us their names and a link to them saying that. You won’t, because you can’t, because no coach has ever said Trask is a “slow learner”. A few haters on this website have said that, but they’re not coaches.

In fact, the Bucs’ quarterback coach, Clyde Christensen, has said Trask picked things up quickly:

“He’s a SMART KID that KNOWS WHAT HE’S DOING. I LIKE WHERE HE’S AT. He DOES A LOT OF GOOD STUFF RIGHT NOW FOR BEING THIS EARLY. He SEES THE FIELD WELL and he’s ABLE TO COMMAND THE HUDDLE.”

  69. Michael Says:

How long before Arch Manning is draft eligible ?

  70. Willie Says:

I’ve just assumed that we would get a cb or pass rush in the first round, but what about moving up a couple of spots and getting Anthony Richardson? I wouldn’t mind seeing an offense around here built around a mobile qb. Roast me.

  71. Goatfarmer Says:

The next time Peter King skips a meal, it will be his first time. Maybe he and Shaun The Burger King are related.

  72. Ranger Walker Says:

Hooker and let him battle it out in camp with Trask

  73. BoricuaBucfan Says:

I like Tannehill he would make a great bridge QB and he has proven that with a good oline and receivers he can win and we have both of those things.

  74. Brazen Zebra Says:

The 49ers proved again this year that if you are solid in the trenches, if you have a solid defense and a solid offense, and if you have solid coaching then just a good QB can play at an elite level. Give Trask a chance? Tough choice. No to Garappolo, Carr, Tannehill, Mayfield, etc. The more important decision is do the Bucs stay with Bowles. Gonna be fun to watch it all play out. Go Bucs!!!

  75. Dom Says:

    @BucBoy

Now you are just lying. Clyde Christen said this about Trask ““Kyle’s always been that kind of slow, steady, developer — in high school, in college — and I think that falls in line with exactly that,” Christensen said. “I think he would put a high value and premium on that, that he’s not the guy who comes in and just becomes the flash immediately. He has a methodical development to him.”

This quote falls in line with what has happened on the playing field with Trask. In Florida for example he couldn’t beat out Felipe Frankes who isn’t very good. After some time though of learning the system things started to click for he and he had a really nice college career. That process starts over now with the new playbook. When you combine that, his inexperience, as well as a much faster and complicated defense in the NFL vs college and its easy to see how he could potentially struggle this year. If I were a betting man I’d bet the under on him being the guy

  76. BucBoy Says:

    Dom,

You’re lying again. You said “multiple coaches” have said Trask is a “slow learner”. No coach has said that about Trask, I asked you to identify the “multiple coaches” and give us a link, and you have failed to do so.

Instead, you give us a quote from Clyde Christensen where he used the term “slow, steady developer”. First, that’s not “slow learner”. Second, you quote Christensen completely out of context by leaving out the rest of what he said. He was talking about Trask not being given a chance to compete with Gabbert for #2 and how that would actually help his development more and how that is consistent with how Trask developed slow and steady in HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE. Here is his quote:

“Kyle has always been that kind of slow, steady DEVELOPER in HIGH SCHOOL AND IN COLLEGE. And I think this follows in line with exactly that. I don’t see him competing with Gabbert. It is hard enough to get enough Gabbert reps. We will prepare Gabbert as No. 2. I see Gabbert being the backup and Kyle being a developmental guy.”

That was the whole purpose of drafting Trask: learning and developing for the two years Brady had left with the Bucs to chase Super Bowls. Read the news from back then.

Third, you conveniently forgot to mention that just last week Christensen said Trask is NOW READY TO GO:

“I think he has all the book knowledge. He has learned by observing all that he could. Now, he just has to get on the field and get some experience. I THINK SOMEDAY HE WILL LOOK BACK AND GO, BOY, THOSE WERE TWO VALUABLE YEARS.”

Boy, oh boy! But then, Christensen is just a 28-year NFL coach. What does he know, right?

Finally, you say: “In Florida for example Trask couldn’t beat out Felipe Franks who isn’t very good.” Lie. Trask beat out Franks and started in several games in 2018 but then suffered a leg injury that sidelined him.

    Thanks for playing, though!

  77. Florida cracker Says:

Just keep Trask, beef up the running game and defense. Gotta keep it all simple when you have simple minds running the team!!

  78. John Dixon Says:

None of this matters until whenever Bowles gets fired. This team is going to be a bottom dweller until that happens.
