Geno Smith To Use Bucs As Leverage

February 19th, 2023

“Mr. Glazer. Nobody plays us. Nobody.”

Interesting chatter out of Seattle from a former quarterback who says he knows new Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales quite well.

Joe is referring to Brock Huard, the former Seahawks QB who is now is a radio guy in Seattle.

Canales got the Bucs job after many seasons as the Seahawks’ receivers and quarterbacks coach, and he spent the four years coaching up Seattle starter Geno Smith.

Smith, 32, was the surprise of the NFL last season leading the NFL in completion percentage and Seattle to a 9-8 record. He was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year (though JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman didn’t use his vote on Smith).

Huard said on KIRO radio in Seattle last week that Smith, a pending free agent awaiting a fat payday, is giddy that Canales landed in Tampa. Multiple times Huard referenced the instant “leverage” of Smith’s old coach landing with a team hurting for a QB.

Huard is confident Smith’s agent will float Smith’s desire to play for the Bucs and Canales — fabricated or real — in an effort to get a better contract in Seattle.

Joe has listened to a lot of Seattle sports radio to learn more about Canales and understand more about what he did with Smith. But Joe’s most interesting takeaway was the leverage game between Smith and the Seahawks.

Seattle holds the No. 5 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft courtesy of the Broncos, and plenty of fans out there would be more than happy to see the team draft a quarterback and move on from Smith.

If that’s an organizational sentiment on Smith, then perhaps Smith really does hit free agency. In that scenario, it’s hard to imagine Todd Bowles and Canales not pushing Team Glazer hard to sign him.

No, Joe is not lobbying for Smith.

Yeah I’m not lobbying for him either.

No, Joe is not lobbying for Smith.
    And I’m with Joe

  4. Couch Fan Says:

Pete Carroll or Todd Bowles… Thats a pretty easy decision to make. Using the Bucs for leverage sounds about right.

  5. Gofortheface30 Says:

Who the F are WE to be condescending towards Geno Smith? He was in the MVP running for most of the year, he was EXCEPTIONAL against the 49ers. His persistence and resilience from where he came is hugely impressive and he was much MUCH better than Brady this yr. Omg we’ve had Brady for all of 3yrs (2 of them good) and we’re gnna have some uppity standard now. Let me tell you something, that Seattle offense here, handing off to a Robinson/white with “maybe” a slight upgrade at receiver over Metcalf and Godwin? That wouldn’t exactly suck and just about the very best you can hope for if you want to be competitive in 2023. But that isn’t a long term solution, because the Bucs are kinda slow, they older in some spots, and over the cap. Rebuild is coming

  6. Gofortheface30 Says:

Yah well that’s the ceiling cobra boy. The Bucs are not in any position of power and a Josh Allen or burrow or Mahomes isn’t walking through that door. I’m not quite sure who anyone expects we should get given our current situation. You want to try to get a franchise QB? Then it is time to tank for Caleb Williams. Or trade who you can trade to move up in this yrs draft for a chance at Young or Levis. Otherwise you try to be co petit I’ve with the Carrs of the world and a patchwork roster

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We could do worse than Smith…….If I were Seattle, I’d draft a QB and keep Smith for a year while the new QB develops…..

If I were the Bucs….I’d spend zero money on a QB….Todd Bowles blew his opportunity with a good QB…..doesn’t deserve another chance.

  8. Power of Pewter Says:

If he’s just using the Bucs as leverage, he really doesn’t want to come here and won’t. A QB in his 30s looking for the final contract in his career would probably take one look at Tampa’s offensive line and decide theyd really like to live long enough to spend their millions.

  9. A Bucs Fan Says:

    Just say no.

  10. HC Grover Says:

Let them keep Smith and give us the pick. We will throw in Plan 9 from Outer Space.

  11. RagingBrisket Says:

This organization is sliding inexorably down into another dark lost decade.

  14. Buccos Says:

I think Geno Smith is a better option than Carr

  15. Pewter Power Says:

He’s smart to use that leverage but with the 5th puck in the draft they could easily move up for a quarterback so he doesn’t have as much leverage as he thinks he does with Seattle

  16. BigMacAttack Says:

I’m not opposed to giving Geno a shot, but big QB money? Not a chance. Build the team and when a great QB comes along, sell the farm.

  17. HC Grover Says:

2023 will be the year of The Deep Stink! Phew at Ray Jay. fergit the germ masks the fans will need gas masks for the odor. No used QB will fix the Bowles disaster. He is a team wrecker.

  18. WillieG Says:

If I was a free agent QB, there is no way I’d play for the Bucs. Here’s why:

Bucs are in cap hell, so if they pay me, they won’t be able to pay others.
The head coach is a defensive guy.
The head coach is too conservative with the offense.
The head coach will be (rightfully) on the hot seat, so I might get someone even worse the following season.
The head coach has a losing record. He could really screw up my career.
The OC has never called plays. He could make me look very bad and screw up my future payday(s).
I want to throw the ball!!
Handing the ball off 80% of the time sucks!!!!
    Playing to not lose sucks!!!
I want to air it out on 2nd and 1, not act like it’s 3rd and 1.
    I don’t want to follow the G. O. A. T. !! Hell no!

Yeah, if I’m a QB, I avoid the Bucs like the plague.

  19. sasquatch Says:

Geno can try to use Bucs as leverage against the Seahawks, but it won’t work because the entire league knows we can’t spend on a QB this year.

Bucs to Geno: We can pay you 8 million.
Geno to Seahawks: I have an offer from Tampa.
    Seahawks to Geno: How much.
    Geno: Ummmm.

  20. Goatfarmer Says:

Given the cap situation the Bucs are in, I doubt Seattle’s GM takes that very seriously, and given the way he looked and played, they’d be silly not to keep him unless he goes insane and asks for Mahomes money or something.

  21. Redeemer Says:

They can’t be in the market for these guys. It doesn’t make sense financially or from a cost benefit analysis. Look, they could pay a QB 30 million. The first couple years could be negligible as far as the cap is concerned. But it’s just kicking the can further down the road. Oh yeah, you have to field a team too. Get the books right, roll with Trask and get a high pick in next years draft.

  22. Rand Says:

No, cause Geno would be the starter automatically. Even if Trask has shown to be better. Bowles philosophy is similar to Arians, he has an affinity towards veteran players and gifts the positions to them without competition from underlings. Especially QB’s

  27. Mike Says:

Bucs should not be in the market for a QB seeking a payday right now. We gotta get cheap this year.

  28. Letsbucinggo Says:

All they have to do as sign him to a 3 year 100 mil contract is to charge 5 mil this year 45 next year and 50 mil his 3rd year piece of 🍰.

  29. Mike Johnson Says:

Stay tuned. Nothing surprises me what our Bucs might do. Nothing. Licht wants to win now. We might just be surprised.

  30. Letsbucinggo Says:

Seriously because Geno had a breakout year at 32 its going to be buyer beware. He will likely have to settle for about 20-25 mil at best. But of course we signed Shaq to a hugh contract and its taken 3 years to get 21 sacks versus the 19.5 he had in his pro bowl year. Hes still a good player but vastly overpaid.

  31. Joe Swanson Says:

💡 sign Geno Smith and Drew Lock trade Trask to the highest bidder I am sure you could get at least a 7th rounder. The Bucs deserves all the blame for not developing Trask and if he stinks they should have traded or released him last year.

  32. Stebobucsfan Says:

Don’t think the Bucs can afford any double digit million dollar QB this year. I think it’s gonna be Trask starting like it or not and they will bring in a veteran back up in case Trask doesn’t cut it. I am one also not sold on G Smith but who knows what the Bucs will do. Until last week I really didn’t know who Canales was

  33. Joe Swanson Says:

I thought canales was a french pastry.

  34. Joe in Michigan Says:

Rand: IF Trask redeeming qualities, which he doesn’t (immobile, lack of arm strength, deliberate learner) you’d have a argument. IF Trask was good, you’d have something to argue about, but you don’t.

Hope the Smith option does not happen!

  36. Joe in Michigan Says:

Goatfarmer: You can bring up the above post (over and over again) if Trask ever is good in the NFL. Good luck

Huh? The only post I made in this thread was about the unlikelihood of any bluff game by Smith’s agent being believed by Seattle’s GM due to the Bucs cap space.

Are you inviting me to comment on Trask? There’s plenty of that in print elsewhere. Why be redundant?! (LOL)

  40. Joe Swanson Says:

Apparently the NFL has stated the salary cap will increase 18mil to 22mil for the foreseeable future. The Bucs need to add a couple of years to Evans and Godwins contract create some cap space. Trade Smith, Gage, Fournette and Mason those four add up to 32mil. Release a couple more players. Then we can sign whatever QB we want just easy.

  41. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Geno threw for 5 TD’s in the Pro Bowl……

  42. Defense Rules Says:

Joe Swanson … ‘Trade Smith, Gage, Fournette and Mason those four add up to 32mil. Release a couple more players. Then we can sign whatever QB we want just easy.’

Easy? Not so fast Joe. With your ‘solution’ you just lost 2 of your starting OLinemen, your #1 RB and your #3 WR to ‘save’ $32 mil on salary CAP. Then you propose to ‘release a couple more players’ (unnamed apparently, but they must come from the offense since our defense is down to a skeleton crew already).

Strange thought just occurred to me though: How much is it going to COST YOU to replace those SIX players who you traded and released? And WHO are you going to replace them with? Inquiring minds (ie, that high $$$ QB who was stupid enough to sign onto a skeleton team) want to know. Oh wait, there aren’t any high $$$ QBs out there who are THAT dumb.

  43. Rand Says:

Geno threw for 5 TD’s in the Pro Bowl

    lol ..you mean flag football

  44. Rand Says:

(immobile, lack of arm strength, deliberate learner)

sheep talk ..he’s not a statue, he has an accurate strong arm, slow learner unsubstantiated

  45. Allbuccedup Says:

With Joe Swansons logic we could sign Geno to an 8 year 200 mil contract and the Bucs would be set at quarterback for eight long years. Not!

  46. Defense Rules Says:

Joe Swanson … ‘The Bucs deserves all the blame for not developing Trask’.

How do you KNOW what Trask is capable of being or how well he’s been developed? The only time anyone has seen him play is with 2nd & 3rd & 4th stringers. He always got the scraps in terms of reps (behind Brady then Gabbert). So how does anyone really KNOW how well he’ll perform if given an opportunity to run with the big dogs?

I’ll be the first to admit that he MAY fizzle out (since they say roughly half of the 1st Rnd QB picks do & he was a 2nd Rnd pick). But none of us KNOW at this point, so it’s all pure speculation. Here’s an alternate thought: Why don’t we see what he’s capable of in a fair competition BEFORE we start talking trading him for 7th Rnd picks.

  47. SB Says:

    @Joe in Michigan.

I am starting to think you are a “deliberate learner” nowadays. I used to think you were a decent commenter but your ‘clairvoyance’ on the whole Trask situation leaves me wondering. Carry on though. If nothing else you are entertaining.

  48. BucsfanFred Says:

Smith has had a well deserved reputation of being a complete and totally unbearable azzhole. I don’t want him.

  49. SB Says:

Why in the heck would that comment go in the corner for a while?

  50. Joe Swanson Says:

Defense rules if they don’t trade or release some of the higher priced players I just can’t see shoving more money down the road. I could see keeping Mason but Smith is not performing very good at all. He’s becoming like an unfine wine that gets worse as years pass.

  51. BucsfanFred Says:

DR, I kinda want to see what we have in Trask too before I cast judgement. .

  52. Rand Says:

By the way for those of you who bandy about the deliberate learner as slow learner about Trask are all wrong and lack reading comprehension.

    “deliberate learner”

    does not mean slow learner

deliberate learning means one who requires feedback, conscious thought, and interaction with others

  53. SB Says:

Here’s what Brady recalls people saying about him at the time:

    –Poor build
    –Skinny
–Lacks great physical stature and strength
–Lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush
    –Lacks a really strong arm
    –Can’t drive the ball downfield
–Does not throw a really tight spiral
–System-type player who can get exposed if forced to ad lib
    –Gets knocked down easily

I’m sure Everyone like you thought he would be the greatest QB Ever!

And I am not sure why SO many people here harp on Trasks Arm.
Here is what NFL.com said on Trasks ‘poor, weak’ arm.

    * Made substantial production gains across the board in 2020. * Enabled team to open up game plan in 2020. * Became the first FBS quarterback in 15 years to post three or more TD passes in nine consecutive games. * Stepped up against Alabama in SEC Championship Game. * Able to pump and reset against baiting coverage. * Feels edge pressure and climbs to free space in pocket. * Gets back into passing platform when moving outside the pocket. * Arm strength to whip field-side deep outs with no issues. * Tardy safeties will find a willing challenger over the top. * Talented downfield passer with touch and accuracy. * Can attack one-on-ones and place deep throw where it needs to go. * Fairly accurate even when feet are not set

Too bad guys like you are doing whatever and not being an NFL scout.

  54. Stebobucsfan Says:

I don’t think the Bucs drafted Trask in the second round to just be a bench warmer behind Brady. They saw something in him. If not mistaken, I think the Bucs moved up to take Trask in the draft. So I want to see what they saw. Let him play and have a backup plan if he’s fail’s which I am pretty sure the Bucs will do

  55. Redeemer Says:

SB, seriously? All of what you listed is true, but in Brady’s rookie year, they knew they had something. That’s why the Patriots carried four QBs that season. It’s the opposite for Trask. They thought they had something and found out different. Don’t give me the snaps bologna either. A guy drafted 64 at QB, always gets a look. Tim Tebow was a great college player too. Sometimes these guys just can’t make the jump. I’m all for seeing what the kids got, but I think you’ll be quite disappointed. When you can’t beat out Gabby, it’s a red flag. And yes, it was a competition for the backup job. It’s always a competition in the NFL.

  56. Nprbuc Says:

Holy crap! Isn’t it just a tad to early about tanking for another QB? Where the hell have all the Bucs fans gone? We had the GOAT last year and stunk up the Bay Area under Bowels and Leftnut. An unknown daft pick or veteran QB is going to fix this stench? Everyone seems to be hating on Trask. A kid who came to us off a stellar year in the SEC. How many of you have seen him work with the Ones? I haven’t seen it at all. It’s a good time to hook our wagon to the guy and see what he produces before you kick him to the curb. He may be the second coming of Christ for all we sofa jockeys know. Give him a chance and if he fails, we are in position to draft another QB that looks good on paper. Calm down. I don’t know anybody who is picking us to go to the SB next year, no matter who we have under center. Lots of work to do before we start that kind of dreaming again.

  57. HC Grover Says:

If Trask is good Bozo will not play him. Clearly good QB’s have no place in the Coach Bozo Game Plans…see Tom Brady.

  58. Rod Munch Says:

A classic one-year wonder. Like Josh McCown being a garbage QB his entire career, then having having 5 good games, and the Bucs bringing him in as a starter.

  59. Defense Rules Says:

Joe Swanson … I don’t disagree with you that we have to do SOMETHING, but if the Bucs start trading players away, it’d be at fire-sale prices (in which we’d still be stuck with a sizable salary CAP hit) AND have to replace the player on top of that. That tactic would be somewhat doable IF we already had someone waiting in the wings (ie, a DEPTH player under contract) who could perform as well or better than the player we traded. If that wasn’t the case Joe, we’d end up with the same poorly-performing offense that we had last season. THAT’S not solid team-building IMO.

No matter how you cut it, we painted ourselves into a corner for 2023 and beyond. We’re not getting out of that corner in 1 year. Probably not in 2 or 3 years actually (depends on the 2024 & 2025 salary CAPs). The only real way to get under this year’s salary CAP AND to have room to sign the FAs & draft picks that we HAVE TO SIGN to flesh out our roster is to restructure most (but not all) of the big $$$ players (Evans, Godwin, Davis, Vea, Jensen & White) to push enough forward to give us the room we need. That means that those 6, plus a number of others, will be with us for several more years. And oh BTW, some of them may say ‘No thanks’ (that’s their right).

In the case of Donnie Smith, I’d hold onto him for 1 more year (it’s the last year of his contract). I think once he heals up (he did sustain a pretty nasty elbow injury & another injury, both of which probably kept him from getting leverage) that he’ll be OK. Remember, he’ll be playing for his next contract (with whoever) & that’ll provide some motivation all by itself.

On top of those things though, we can release Succop (save $3.7 mil) & Brate (save $2 mil). IOW, there’s quite a few things we can do BEFORE we start the fire sale. It’s impossible to completely rebuild a team in 1 year.

  60. RustyRhinos Says:

Let’s leverage Lock to our team. He knows the OC coaching style and has worked with him in the past. We have a whole bunch of players to try and work to keep and add new ones, for the lost ones. We have our second SB trophy and had three years with Brady as our QB. We need to look forward, get our cap in order and look forward to 2024.

So tired of the nonstop negative JBF “know-it-all” keyboard GMs, keyboard player evaluators, and keyboard prophets. Who are all none of these things. If any of them had any clue about the future or GM or scouting skills some NFL Organization, NCAA football program, or USFL-XFL-AFL teams would be beating down their doors to get their names on the dotted bottom line of a contract.
    That is the truth.

  61. Jack Clark Says:

Joe Swanson … Kudos for thinking outside the proverbial box. Licht may well agree with you 100% (he may be gun-shy though once his sidekick Mike Greenberg explains the ramifications of the salary CAP mess to him). Of course, I still chuckle about the Mar 2021 article ‘SR’s Fab 5: Greenberg Has Bucs’ Future Salary Cap In Great Shape’. Yup, we’re in GRRREAT shape. I’m beginning to think it was the blind leading the blind.

Jason Licht doesn’t usually talk to the media to give a “state of the Bucs”. I don’t think it matters. Is that something other GMs typically do?

I’m sure he’ll have things to say at the media sessions at the combine.

The Glazers (no apostrophe) aren’t selling.

Give Gabbert a small raise to $3M (+ incentives if he starts.)

Draft Hooker in 2nd or 3rd rd

Open competition between Gabbert, Trask and Hooker

Pay off as much of our “debt” as possible in 2023.

With a good draft this team can get right with the cap and still be competitive.

  71. Anonymous Says:

I’m curious Redeemer. You’re bringing up guys like Tebow. Did he really have “comparable” stats to Trask? Considering when and where that Trask was drafted as a “project” mind you (second round, second level), who else truly stacks up to him in comparable stats and achievements, in a similar scenario?

Because with the type of resume that SB just laid out it, Trask sounds to be a guy that we “have to” give a shot. We committed to him to. We gave him a fair shake and trained him like crazy!! Or did we?

You mentioned that the Pat’s were “heavily” seeking QBs at the ti.e with a big 4 of them on board. Meaning that they gave Brady an “actual shot” and it sounds like he also got legit training to give him his best chance with the shot.

It’s VERY opposite for Trask. Isn’t it? In fact it was pretty much made clear that he would be riding pine the first year. And then it was “initially” MADE CLEAR that be had NO SHOT in year 2 , and that they weren’t going to bother to even look his way. That is what the QB Coach said (I think it was the QB coach.) UNTIL Bowles “corrected” him. Well sort of. Kinda.

We all know how Brady felt about competition. Wasn’t Going to Happen. And it Did Not. Proved out by the whole Garrapalo situation in Foxboro. How long did he have to wait for his shot?

We don’t know what Trask can do. We never did groom him properly so We Don’t Know.. “Then again, what QB have we EVER groomed properly?”

Now if I think about it “that way”, it makes me think that maybe Redeemer is onto something!

  72. Redeemer Says:

Many of you here are way to afraid of the cap. They can resign guys and convert existing money on deals into signing bonuses with others. Not advocating that strategy, but it can be done. The bucs have spent a ton of real dollars the past three years. That’s the real issue, not a fake cap excuse. It’s a business like any other. An owner isn’t going to throw away good money after bad. But, if they wanted to, any of these free agent QBs are certainly attainable.

  73. SB~LV Says:

They have had their time and managed to rent 2 Lombardi trophies.. thanks no go away
Jason is only average as a GM and I don’t believe he can navigate the next few years safely. He will sign some veteran with a record equal to JL’s
Folks I don’t think I am being negative, I realize that Cap Man Cometh so bright light FA’s will not be looking here unless it’s the best money they can grab on their way out of the league.
This franchise is SO FAR OFF from the postseason football we just watched it’s a crushing depression.
Go ahead with your wishing and ah hoping… good luck with that as a strategy.
    The OC is a joke!

  74. Goatfarmer Says:

As much as many / most of us would love to see Toad’s Bowels get fired, it’s unlikely that he himself agrees with this sentiment.

Presuming he’d like to keep his job, there is no way in any universe that Toad just goes sailing into 2023 regular season with Kyle Trask penciled in as the starter or the backup. There will be at a minimum a full-on QB competition for all QB slots available, and it’s a certainty that at least one if not two are veterans pining for another shot.

If he somehow took a lot of mescaline and named Trask his starter, he might as well apply for unemployment right away.

  75. Redeemer Says:

Anonymous, I get where you’re coming from. My general point is, why would they draft a guy that high, if they didn’t intend to give him at least a shot at being the backup. Jimmy drove Brady, almost as soon as he was drafted. Bill talked about Brady’s age and contract situation. Now I will admit that Trask was never allowed to compete for the starters job. That’s just silly talk. But, he should have had ample opportunity to compete for the backup role. If he didn’t, then they did the kid and the organization a disservice. I hope I’m dead wrong and he turns into Joe burrow.

If he somehow took a lot of mescaline and named Trask his starter

If he took mescaline, he’d probably become no risk-it no-biscuit.

  79. Craig Says:

Geno will get the franchise tag from Seattle. Bucs don’t have and probably don’t want a shot at him, he is past his “best by” date. It will be interesting to see if Canales was the reason he had his most productive season ever.

Trask was drafted as insurance, in case Brady got another Stupor Bowl ring and retired. He has all of the physical skills to be a great pocket passer with the ability to move the pocket enough to matter.

With decent coaching he might go far. I am not sure the Bucs have decent coaching, so he might end up like Derek Carr’s big brother, gun shy.

  80. Sean G Says:

This is why I don’t want Geno Smith. Seahawks’ Geno Smith drove 96 mph, threatened police during DUI arrest:

I’m thinking we should give the kid out of Tennessee a shot on day 2. He’s coming off of injury but I think he could be a huge payoff in the long run.

JR Sweezey played the Bucs like a football version of Oceans 11.
It should be made into a movie. It could end with Sweezey boarding a plane to Seattle as Licht chases the plane down the runway.

  83. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Nothing against Licht. He’s an excellent GM who has to work within the Glazers parameters.
Personally I think the Glazers have checked out and gone turtle-mode.
They’re probably doing real estate deals to capitalize on the FL market
and the Bucs are an afterthought, if that.
Amazing how KC stays competative no matter what but the Bucs implode
    every few years.
Making Bowles HC after he “proved” himself in NY was just dumb…or an
    example of just not caring

I would take Smith over Garoppolo or Trask. Lose Donovan, move Wirfs to the Left side and put Goedeke back to RT , his natural position.

  87. Joe in Michigan Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai:
    Kyle Trask’s arm:
    Arm Strength (6.25/10)
Trask’s arm is by far his greatest negative. He can throw a 50-yard strike at any given moment; however, his velocity tends to not carry past 30 yards downfield, leaving it up to his receivers to make a play, even if the ball is placed correctly.

Trask ran a 5.08 40 yard dash at the Combine.

If you all believe Trask was the second coming of Tom Brady, wouldn’t he beat out Gabbert for 2nd string? I know, you’ve got excuses, such as Brady felt threatened by Trask being 2nd string. Hahahaha

  88. Joe in Michigan Says:

What is Kyle Trask’s 40 time?
    5.08s
Percentiles vs. Quarterbacks: 40 Yard Dash 5.08s* 8% tile

  89. BucaneroJim Says:

The Bucs offense was under the ol’ familiar dark cloud and in the pirate ship doldrums 2022… even Tom Brady could not get the sails billowing and steer the team to winning. Really?… we expected Gabbert & Trask to step in against Atlanta and the sun to shine?

Who knows if Trask will be successful in the NFL, but if the team and coaching approach/attitude is the same in 2023, no quarterback will be able to steer the ship to winning. I hold hope, though.
