Pete Carroll, Jason Licht Talk New Bucs Offensive Coordinator Dave Canales

February 28th, 2023

Pete Carroll opens about new Bucs playcaller Dave Canales.

New Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales spent a generation learning professional coaching alongside iconic Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll.

So Joe was interested in hearing what Carroll would say about his protégé today at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Joe was front and center when Carroll talked about his former receivers and quarterbacks coach.

“He is one of the young guns,” Carroll began. “He is one of the guys we see coming through the league that have that kind of that connection to creativity, freedom of though, openness, that allow for so many good young guys to make it. You see it, whether they’re playcallers, or whether they’re head coaches. And it’s a really cool element to see guys express their ability. Dave is one of the guys that fits right in with it.

“He has been so deeply involved with us that he is us. You know, we talk the same language. We see things the same. We evaluate the same. We have the backlog of stories that we’ve shared and what we’ve learned and how we’ve grown. And Dave’s a guy, for me, I’ve always gone to him to communicate with him because he has great vision and great insights and he works really, really well with people. So he’s been an integral part of our process along the way.  So man, to me he’s going to be highly success. I don’t see anything but that.”

Carroll, 71, went on to quip that me might be a little biased when it comes to Canales.

Joe thought it was especially interesting when Carroll said of Canales, “He is us.” That sounded like Bruce Arians talking about Byron Leftwich.

Bucs GM Jason Licht noted he was in on offensive coordinator interviews with Todd Bowles. The implication was Licht was part of all of them. And Licht emphasized that Canales was singing the right song.

“Lotta energy. He’s very confident,” Licht said of Canales. “He comes from a great system. He’s got a lot of core beliefs that we liked. And he’s got plans. He’s got a plan. He’s very prepared, so we’re very, very excited about what he brings to the table.”

Compared to Leftwich, Canales is like a breath of fresh air!

OK, haters, I have a question. When Arians praises Trask many of you blow it off as “Well, what else is he gonna say?” Given that, are we to believe what Carroll says about Canales? Asking for a friend.

    😛

  3. D-Rok Says:

For some reason, as Carroll says of Canales, “He is us,” I somehow imagine that our previous OC might say, “He be us and he do what he do.”

    Sorry for the joke.

    Or am I?

All kidding aside, Canales sure does ooze enthusiasm. I like it.

Licht has hired some of the top producing offensive minds. Koetter and BA both had top 3 offenses. BL was a bust, but that was a loyalty hiring.

Because Licht knows good OC, I have confidence Canales knows his craft. Whether he can take on all that the OC job entails will be interesting.

It will be nice to see some enthusiasm on the sidelines! Enthusiasm is contagious!! Bowles is mostly depressing!!!

lol i could see a future where raheem is a headcoach in the league again soon. he is awesome and clearly has a mind. once this regime gets the boot, it would be cool to have him come home with more experience.

you dont have to look far to find people raving about him hes come to be seen as something of a guru.

  7. Hodad Says:

If Canales does good, we do good. Go Dave.

When Raheem became head coach for the Bucs I recall his style being compared to Mike Tomlin who was with the Bucs and left to have a great career for Pittsburgh. He didn’t get the support he needed back at the time from the front office unfortunately and it ended badly. He’s much wiser now and will do great when he gets another opportunity.

That said, I do hope Bowles has long-term success here in Tampa, so I hope no opportunity opens up here for Raheem in the near future.

Bowles gets a lot of criticism here because of the way he is on the sidelines. I couldn’t care less about how he is on the sidelines. I’ve watched Hall of Fame coaches (like Tony Dungy) who similarly showed little emotion of any kind during a game. Bowles can motivate players. His players on defense held KC to zero TD’s during the SuperBowl. They looked pretty motivated to me.

An OC with a plan? That’s a new one around here.

I do like what I’m hearing about this guy. Maybe we’re looking at the Bucs next head coach after Bowels flushes out another consecutive losing season as head coich.

Ask Daddy what he thinks of one of his sons, what’s he gonna say? Of course “he is one of us”, “we are Borg”. You are not going to hear anything except exactly what is coming out of the Pete Carroll motivational speaker school of football. Rah rah, non-stop excitement, we love everything, rah rah, enthoooziasm, hyper oxygen, tales of USC, WE ALL WE NEED/ HAWKS!.

This jaded team is in need of a shot of motivation, to be sure. But it is one thing to bring up an entire young to prime team on the Kool-Aid, the way the Seahawks bought in for a couple of years (before everything soured and the locker room turned poison) it’s quite another to insert that program into a team halfway down. And Canales is just the OC, not the HC. What’s Bowles going to do to lift an entire team off the canvas?

I’ve never been a big Pete Carrol fan but he’s a very successful coach that has molded some great players. He should have run Marshan Lynch up the gut for the TD win, but he’s still nevertheless.
