Scotty Miller Is One Very Relieved Receiver

November 7th, 2022

Dodged bullet.

Scotty Miller may have had one of his best games in a long time last night. Well, except for one play.

On the second-last drive for the Bucs, Tom Brady went to Miller three straight plays to the left side, all complete passes as the Bucs marched to the red zone.

On second-and-goal from the Rams-6 with 2:06 left in the game and the Bucs trailing by four, Miller, from the left side, got behind Rams rookie corner Derion Kendrick in the end zone.

Brady hit Miller right in the face and Miller barfed all over himself.

Had the Bucs lost, Miller would have been the villain. And Miller knew it.

So on the final drive when Cade Otton caught the winning touchdown, Miller was a very happy camper. Yeah, the Bucs won but Miller knew his hide was saved.

“I was especially relieved after I just dropped that ball,” Miller said. He was “thinking this loss is about to be on me but thankfully we were able to get it done. All of us collectively, we really needed a win. I think it was three straight losses or something like that.

“We need to stay in the divisional race with the Falcons too, so a big win as far as that goes. We needed it, we got it, and the flight to Germany will be a whole lot better now.”

As godawful as the offense played for roughly 50 minutes of last night’s game, and how badly the Bucs have played since losing to the Packers, it’s hard to believe the Bucs are now in first place.

And really, that’s all that matters. The Bucs are clearly still in the playoff hunt — wild card, too. They likely will need a division title to play into mid-January.

Joe still has a hunch one reason the Bucs didn’t make moves at the trade deadline is the powers at One Buc Palace figure they will take their chances with Brady in the postseason so long as they can win a division.

Being in first place is NOT all that matters. They need to be playing well as the season ends. There is still time to get their act together, as they did in the Super Bowl season. But the current effort / execution will not get them far in the playoffs.

  2. Bosch Says:

AMI is right. This performance against Seattle would ave had them down by two or more scores with 44 seconds left.

  3. SB~LV Says:

Yes he should have caught that ball!
But I can understand that he didn’t have time to process what was coming directly at his eyes, he was seeing a ball coming directly at his face with no side angle to judge depth perception. If you think I am making excuses, I have been one of Scotty the Bodies harshest critics last off season and camp .

  4. Beej Says:

If Jensen’s return means we can start running the ball, we’re saved

  5. Colonel Angus Says:

Eh, if he catches that, the Rams have 2 minutes to tie or win it. That drop may have been a blessing.

  6. Jack Sparrow Says:

THank God Bucs did not cut Scotty. 🙂

  7. ZZbucs Says:

I love Scotty and I ws really glad he had all those catches before and after the drop……Great fourth receiver!!! very happy we kept him

  8. Dooley Says:

It was good seeing Scotty get right back at it after that drop in the endzone. Also worth noting, he still gets like 8-9 yards of cushion from DBs out of respect for his speed.

  9. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

It was refreshing to see them go to the 4 receiver set with Otten in tight. I can’t for the life of me understand why this isn’t our base set. We are a team made to keep a team honest with the run. Why aren’t we doing it from the first play of the game. Brady should have 15 passes every quarter.

If our D gets healthy and stays healthy, they are the best in the league. If the offense can score 28 points per game, we can win it all.

  10. Jack Sparrow Says:

Scotty is better than “Who lio”. What a waste of money with Julie.

  11. AKicknTheBucNuts Says:

Scotty Miller: ” I think it was three straight losses or something like that.”

WTF is going on at One Buc Place?

You mean to tell me Scotty does not know how many losses they’ve had?

Is he next going to say: “We needed 5 yards for the first down, or something like that.”

“I ran the wrong route, or something like that.”

“I just couldn’t hold onto the ball, or something like that.”

“I forgot where to line up, or something like that.”

“I’m on a professional football team, or something like that.”

The point is Scotty…you should know EXACTLY what the “F” is going on with your team and yourself.

This to me, is a microcosm of what is wrong with the Bucs. Are they so out of focus that they don’t know what is going on when on the field? Or even their own record, or how many losses they’ve had?

I’m hearing things this year I’ve never heard from any Bucs team ever.
Like: “We got bored” And now “Something like that”

It’s the COACHES job to make sure these guys are dialed-in.

    Clearly, they are not.

  12. John Sinclear Says:

Bottom line is – 3+3+3+7= 16 points That’s what they did.

Should have been 7+7+7+7= 28. One Touchdown Tom remains consistent. Blame Leftwich, he calls those no-gain inside runs. Blame Tom. He’s the commander on the field and can change the play if he so chooses. But somebody, somewhere, HAS to stand up.

  13. LVMYBUCS Says:

Guys a good coach puts in players that can match up well on select teams. It may not be Evans or Jones or Godwin sometimes this why I say we have coaching issues its just that our coaches dont know what they are doing. If u have slow corners put in a speedy receiver if u have speedy corners put in tall physical recievers. Leftwitch and Bowles have no clue what they are doing im sorry to say.

I posted this in another thread but will post it again. I am Facebook friends with Chidi Ahanatou, who thinks that Scotty Miller should play the slot full time instead of Godwin.
Yes, he dropped a sure touchdown, but sure made up for it at the end of the game!
Because of his well known speed, the Rams defenders gave him plenty of cushion, allowing Brady to work the ball down the field, and still save time by getting out of bounds.
Like Bruce Arians says” You can’t coach speed”, you either have it, or you don’t.
As good as Chris Godwin is, I don’t think he would be able to do what Scotty did for us yesterday, simply because the Rams Defenders would have challenged him more.
At my house yesterday, we had quite a few people who were standing up and hollering on the amazing final drive by Brady.

No, we did not play especially well, but we won!
The Seahawks are a much better team than the Rams, and we have to play them in Germany next.

  15. Jonny Says:

Let’s hope that loss to Panthers does not come back to bite us in the rear big time.

  16. Jack Sparrow Says:

Bowles and LEftwich does not have a clue how to use their weapons in armory. They stick to their bow and arrow instead of using their canons and cruise missles.

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bucs traditionally lose in out-of-country games more than they win. So I will be surprised if we win.

Our team still sucks…and it’s not just Leftwich. Bowles has not trusted the offense enough to take chances. He’s coached like a coward.

When is the bye week? After this next game? When we lose against the Seahawks? That’s when I think heads will roll.

And the Glazers are probably talking to Arians about taking over as interim HC already.

At this point, if Bowles is fired and Arians takes over, Leftwich can stay on while Arians calls plays. It might be goid foe Lefty to see how Arians changes things.

  18. Smashsquatch Says:

Scooter had fresh legs yesterday and it showed. He needs more playing time, and the same can be said for White. I’d start Rachaad in Munich, and not look back. Lenny is simply dancing too much and looks sluggish.

  19. macajubav Says:

I don’t know. I froze that pic and saved it. Scotty trying to catch the ball with his face mask. At the NFL level, a player who wants a second contract and expects to be #1,2 or 3 on a depth chart has to grab any ball that his hands can touch. Through the hands and bouncing off the face mask is absurd. No excuses. Maybe for someone who will bounce around multiple teams thats ok.

  20. orlbucfan Says:

I hope they knock off that ridiculous running play to Godwin. The one which looked like a slanted lateral. Who called that whopper? Brady? CG14 is a WIDE RECEIVER.

  21. macajubav Says:

@smashsquatch, right, apparently Lenny was getting pouty and Rachaad had to boost Lenny. He was upset he was not playing ! Friggin guy isn’t getting any yards, if he wants to play get some friggin yards Lenny. No burst, and misses holes, he does give it his 100% though.

  22. matthew veal Says:

I’m happy to be proven wrong, but one series of downs is not proof.

  23. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

And why did we bail on Justin Watson???

  24. JimbobBucfan Says:

Box scores show Miller and Godwin had seven catches each. Otton, Fournette and Evans had five. White, Jones, Kieft and Perriman had three, two, one and one. This bodes well for how well Tom is able to spread the ball around for our remaining games.

    Go Bucs!

  25. JimmyfromNY Says:

Anyone making excuses for that drop have their head examined it was an Egregious drop , Papa wanna kids make that play. In the way the team is going could have been a season ending drop , don’t make excuses for that

  26. Woodenman Says:

Jimmy from NY why you worried about the bucs stick to critiqueing the jets and giants

  27. BigBucs Says:

Here’s the thing… Scotty Miller is the Bucs 5th or 6th receiver on the depth chart. He definitely needed to catch that ball but he was also a big asset on the last 2 drives. They need to play him more because he’s the only real deep threat they have.

  28. Redeemer Says:

It was a bad drop, all on Miller. Good for him for keeping his head in the game.

  29. PassingThru Says:

Great, Scottie Miller doesn’t have to share Least Valuable Player award with Gage, the other WR who cost Tampa Bay a game because of a dropped TD pass.

  30. macajubav Says:

    Chris @ apple roof.
Scotty (aka “the feather”) Miller is fast but in the slot everyone just bumps him off his route and messes up timing. He has shown he is not strong enough. He is a one trick pony. Teams have shown Scotty is easily neutralized with press man coverage, why the Rams didn’t bother is beyond me.
We clearly see, Godwin has the hands and squeezes just about every ball, doesn’t he have the highest completion rate on the team ?
Miller, not close, feather lets it bounce off his face mask.
(BTW , I do like feather, just don’t believe he measures up anywhere near Godwin).

  31. Nick2 Says:

One trick or not Miller and Perriman are the only two reveivers we have that stretch the field. Without him the last several games coverage was stuffing all Bradys dink and dunks. Miller gets open and that’s our issue right now no separation. That being said he totally choked and almost cost us that game. I’d keep him in the field to at least keep the defenses honest either way.

And why did we bail on Justin Watson???

He was responsible for two Brady pick-6’s in 2020, was on IR last year, saw the writing on the wall, signed with Chiefs. Mahomes loves the guy

  33. frustrated fan Says:

Miller has awesome speed agree stretch the field but everyone knows were he catches the ball is were the play ends there is no yards after. If he ever wants to truly shine he needs to stay on his feet. As for the running game can Leonard Fournette try an face forward when he runs. Trying to back pedal for the first everytime is just showing a complete lack of effort. He is better than that and somehow someone needs to remind him. So if he is frustrated how do you think the fans feel with you complete 9 yards of back pedaling. Bottom line is if white is tripling your yards only a fool would put you back in.

  34. Bunny Says:

I am happy and relieved that the BUCS win on Sunday, while it was not pretty where guys dropped the football, and blew scoring chances, this have to stop soon if the BUCS want to be in the playoffs, Brady is still good only need his players to do their part…Brady can get it done, The BUCS can surprise I believe in the Bucs
