Warren Sapp: Bucs Will Soon Know About Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

November 1st, 2022

Bucs OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyina.

With Shaq Barrett out for the season and perhaps never coming back from his nasty Achilles tear (Shaq turns 30 this month and Achilles injuries to dudes in their 30s are not good), former first-round pick Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is now the focus of the Bucs’ edge rush.

He will be the focus of opponents’ blocking schemes, too.

In a virtual sitdown with former Bucs guard and local personality Ian Beckles on his podcast “In the Trenches,” Bucs legend Warren Sapp said the Bucs “real fast” will learn if they have to go hunting for an edge rusher in the offseason.

Beckles, of course, weeks ago put JTS on notice. Beckles has a history of focusing on one player and never letting up until he’s run out of town. They have included Gaines Adams, Barrett Ruud, Gerald McCoy and now JTS.

Ian Beckles: Joe Tyron-Shoyinka, he’s got a lot of names but he doesn’t have a lot of plays now. I was the person — people were getting on me for being negative towards this kid. I’m not saying anything negative, I’m just telling you what he does which is almost nothing.

Warren Sapp: We are about to find out. Because one thing about the trenches, we are going to find out real fast if he can play this game.

Beckles: Can he play to you?

Sapp: I tell you what, the plays that I have seen, I have seen good technique, good form. Real good effort. But it is just not enough. You have to set it up. You have to work on it. … This is four quarters of football. I don’t agree with this damn, ‘I’ve got him on a pitch count.’

Helluva point by Sapp. How is a young player supposed to improve his craft if he’s standing on the sidelines? You learn by playing.

So Joe agrees with Sapp here. JTS needs to be on the field. Period. If, as Joe is starting to believe, JTS is a pass rusher only, then so be it. But if you think he is an every-down player, keep him on the field.

After all, with the Bucs currently owning a top-10 draft slot for next spring, and sadly looking square at a possible 3-7 record when you look at the Bucs’ next two opponents, what do the Bucs have to lose by keeping JTS on the field?

  1. SlyPirate Says:

    Time and coaching.
Not sure if he’ll be average or great, but he has the tools to be an NFL player.

  2. beano Says:

“Joe Says: How is a young player supposed to improve his craft if he’s standing on the sidelines? You learn by playing.”

No doubt, Joe. Too bad you and your fellow Trask Haters don’t apply that to Trask. You guys just hate on him, and do so despite the fact he actually looked good in the preseason games. Take a look:

“Bucs QB Kyle Trask shines despite loss in preseason opener vs. Dolphins” (BucsWire)

“Buccaneers’ Kyle Trask: Encouraging finish to preseason” (CBS Sports)

  3. Rand Says:

Run him out of town and watch him become a star on another team. Everyone is looking for an edge rusher.

  4. gofortheface30 Says:

Let me save the work for a lot of you: He runs around like a baby giraffe, clumsy, not near as athletic as the team seems to think he is. Weak against the run, terrible really, bad at the point of attack. Doesn’t show up or flash on screen at all. He is JAG personified. Anthony Nelson and Carl “leather” Nassib are better players., which isnt saying much because they are also JAGS. Frankly, just like the rest of the d-line. That includes YOU Vita Vea. The one, true BLUE CHIP player on that defense is Antoine Winfield. Average at best literally everywhere else with the exception of Lavonte David, who is more “good” at this point in his career than elite. Coaching sucks too. Other than that, were fine, totally.

  5. Joe Says:

No doubt, Joe. Too bad you and your fellow Trask Haters don’t apply that to Trask.

Hope you include Bruce Arians, Bryon Leftwich, Todd Bowles, and yes, even Jason Licht as “haters.” Those are the guys that have misjudged this new-age Dan Marino so badly he’s only worn a Bucs uniform once, and that was by default.

What do you see in this Trask (since you’ve seen so many of his snaps; more than Joe apparently) that suggests Trask will lead the Bucs to the Super Bowl?

Joe wants to know. Speak! What does Trask do so well as a Bucs wannabe that everyone who has seen him practice (including Bucs’ shot-callers) is missing? Go ahead. (And no, Joe doesn’t give a s(p)it what he did in college. That’s history.)

  6. Goatfarmer Says:

Get used to 3-7 and then more of the same.

  7. D Says:

See I think that’s Tryon’s biggest attribute, his athletic ability. If he can hone his craft and learn to be disciplined, watch out. Big if though…

  8. Rand Says:

The fact is that Trask hasn’t been able to show his wares because Brady is here. I don’t know what the kid can do at this point without the opportunity and suffice to say neither does Joe. So to definitively say Trask is hot garbage is shortsighted, plus unfortunately we know Joe’s batting record when it comes to QB evaluations.

  9. Mike Says:

There’s no way this kid isn’t going to be a player. He’s got too much talent and athleticism. He just needs time and experience. Give him playing time. As much as possible. Let him grow.

  10. Letsbucinggo Says:

Got too many players on a pitch count.

  11. Your Mom Says:

    google translate Sapp to English

  12. Your Mom Says:

If Shaq’s double-team go to JTS, you’ll never hear his name again. Those players Beckles targeted never went onto success later as I recall either.

  13. HC Grover Says:

Plan 9 From Outer Space. He is just pathetic and a major draft error. Get him out. The wrong stuff.

  14. D-Rok Says:

I agree with Your Mom. JTS hasn’t done much with 1-on-1’s so far in his career, so how are we going to see what he’s made of when teams pay more attention to him?

I don’t think anyone is silly enough to think JTS is the next Reggie White and will blossom into a dominant player; certainly, not this year!

  15. Beej Says:

I’ve always thought Nelson to be a better edge rusher than JTS

  16. teacherman777 Says:

He has all the physical attributes.

    He is extremely young.

He only played 2 years in college.

    He’s a freak. Athletically.

He just need “man strength” that will come both with time AND playing experience.

But we still need to draft another freak OLB next year in the first.,

    And CB in the 2nd.

  17. beano Says:

    Joe,

“Bucs QB Kyle Trask shines despite loss in preseason opener vs. Dolphins” (BucsWire)

“Buccaneers’ Kyle Trask: Encouraging finish to preseason” (CBS Sports)

    Bucs v. Colts QB RTG
    Trask 99.6
    Gabbert 89.0
    Brady 87.5

    Your hatred blinds you.

  18. Leighroy Says:

Joe when will you address the elephant in the room that your crutch argument against Trask is nullified by the fact that Blaine Gabbert is the mandated backup to Brady on this team? Unless I’m mistaken, the authors of this website have published this fact themselves.

Stop the madness! Find a better take!

  19. Leighroy Says:

And to be clear, I am not some Kyle Trask honk. I have no idea what we have in Kyle Trask as much as the next guy bc he’s being artificially pushed to the pine.

I’d like to know (somehow) so that we can either learn more or regroup entirely at that position post-Brady.

  20. Buczilla Says:

    Lol, we’re f’d.

  21. beano Says:

“Leighroy Says: Blaine Gabbert is the mandated backup to Brady on this team? Unless I’m mistaken, the authors of this website have published this fact themselves.”

Yes they have. Clyde Christensen, the Bucs Qb coach, said exactly that out loud before the 2022 training camp even began: “I don’t see Trask competing with Gabbert this year. We will prepare Gabbert as No. 2. I see Gabbert being the backup and Kyle being a developmental guy.”

  22. Oneilbuc Says:

Joe . You can’t judge a quarterback that only practice with scout team, practice squad and camp bait and Gabbert is practicing with the starters and second team and that’s a quarterback competition to lol 😅😅? Until he plays with the starters you can’t evaluate him right now. But it’s easy to push a narrative about a player when the fans can’t be there to see for our selfs. How does he look throwing to Evans or Godwin oh I forgot he never threw to them in practice. A real competition is 2 players regardless of the position competing with the first team . You can’t have one competing with the c team and the other one with the A team that’s not a competition especially when the coach comes out and say one of them don’t have a chance of winning the job .

  23. Bucsfanman Says:

    How’d we get onto Trask?!

JTS literally, put up or shut up time!

  24. Rod Munch Says:

JTS was a 2nd rounder, I think people need to keep that in mind when talking about their expectations. Also he didn’t play much in college. He has plenty of authentic ability, but he was raw coming out, and is still plenty raw. But pass rushers can take a while to develop – BUT if he is going to be anything, as Sapp said, I think we’ll find out here shortly as he’s thrown into the fire.

One thing the Bucs should do, however, is actually use White the way he should be used, and have him rushing up the middle on literally every play. Literally. No more zone with him, no more playing in space, no more standing down field – just have him run up the middle on every play. That’s how he became an all-pro, and I don’t get why the Bucs have abandoned that. Without Shaq there, White is probably your best pass rusher, so use him.

  25. FairMinded Says:

Joe it’s just what bad teams do…cause the fan base to question everything and somehow imagine the 3rd string non entity is “The Answer”..forgive ‘em

  26. Thisisouryear!! Says:

This is the position I would try to trade for. If there’s someone out there that could help, we certainly need it. I think our defense is going to lack pressure from a 4 man front.

  27. DEEEMO Says:

THIS HAS BEEN A LONG BAD SEASON SO FAR….thinking it might get worse before it gets better…2 many injuries, bad coaching, no fire in the players…it looked like they were getting it back in the 1st quarter on Thursday…..then the same hard to watch football happened again…

  28. beano Says:

“Rod Munch Says: JTS was a 2nd rounder, I think people need to keep that in mind when talking about their expectations.”

Wrong. 1st round in 2021 draft. Trask was 2nd round. Interesting how you show patience for the 1st rounder but not the 2nd rounder. Oh yeah, I forgot, you said you hate all UF people.

  29. Defense Rules Says:

Rod … ‘One thing the Bucs should do, however, is actually use White the way he should be used, and have him rushing up the middle on literally every play.’

I panicked there for a second and thought you’re gone over to the dark side. Wasn’t until I read further that I realized you were talking about DEVIN White, not RASHAAD White. I could see BL reading that and jumping up & down yelping ‘Yes, that’s what I’ve been saying. More rushing up the middle’.

    Whew, what a relief.

  30. Arn platz Says:

So this means Licht will not be making any trades on the defensive side of the ball. 3-7 here we come

  31. Defense Rules Says:

Beano … I know it’s fun to push Joe’s buttons, but you do know that he owns this site, right? I know from experience though that sometimes it’s fun to just jump right into the furball knowing that you’re gonna lose, but you just can’t help yourself.

Trask WILL get his chance, by default if nothing else. I’m not convinced that he was BA’s pick; more like he was JL’s pick (he loves 2nd round gambles). As long as BA was HC, Trask was always gonna be a ‘project’ and Gabbert was gonna be the backup.

But now look at 2023. Brady won’t be here. Gabbert more than likely won’t either (he’s not ‘The Future’). We won’t have the $$$ to buy a top-flight QB, and by the time we pick in the draft, all the really good QB prospects will be gone. So who’s Last Man Standing? Kyle Trask. He’ll get his chance. If he flames out, we get a high draft pick & draft his successor. If he does good, we’ve got someone we can work with & spend our top draft picks on other more pressing needs (like DE/OLB or DT, or ILB, or CB, or heck, the list goes on & on).

  32. Bucamania Says:

I’m seeing more Jane than Tarzan from JTS so far.

  33. Captain Oblivious Says:

What happened to @Beano today? His comments make sense and for the first time I find myself agreeing with him. Maybe because he isn’t denigrating Brady in every comment.

  34. Ben Harvey Says:

We will never know if JTS is a good pass rusher bc now teams will be running the ball down their throats there wont be any opportunity to sack the Qb. JTS has to prove he can stop the run forcing teams into throwing situations.

  35. beano Says:

“Defense Rules Says: If he [Trask] flames out, we get a high draft pick & draft his successor. If he does good, we’ve got someone we can work with & spend our top draft picks on other more pressing needs (like DE/OLB or DT, or ILB, or CB, or heck, the list goes on & on).”

I agree. That’s what I’ve been saying. But I think it should start this season. It’s lost. So, Trask should get meaningful playing time with the first team to see what he has. If he looks good (and I think he will) we draft accordingly in 2023. Otherwise we draft in 2023 not really knowing whether Trask is it. Which would be stupid.

  36. D-Rome Says:

Shaq Barrett will never play another snap for the Bucs.

  37. Defense Rules Says:

Beano … ‘I agree. That’s what I’ve been saying. But I think it should start this season. It’s lost.’

Do you REALLY want to be the team that benches The GOAT in favor of a 3rd string QB? I don’t.

  38. Defense Rules Says:

D-Rome … I really hope you’re wrong about Shaq never playing another snap for the Bucs. Bucs signed a 4-year $68 mil contract with him in 2021 that they restructured in 2022. His CAP Hits are unbelievable because we’ve been deferring the hits (as usual) …

    o 2023: $21.7 mil
o 2024: $23.7 mil (last year of his contract, BUT … because of the restructuring, he’d still have a $9.6 mil CAP hit in 2025 and a $2.9 mil CAP Hit in 2026). Those impacts total out to $45 mil, and there ain’t no one coming to our rescue to let us off the hook because he’ll be an over-30, damaged goods player.

There is a potential out in 2024, but it’d still cost us an arm & a leg. There-in lies the danger of these restructured contracts. IF a super-star like Shaq gets injured for any period of time. They make out fairly well but the team gets screwed.

As in … Welcome to Bendover U. And this is just Freshman year.

  39. Mike Johnson Says:

Joe Tryon is a nice little backup. He makes a splash play here or there but no consistency. We should have gone after Chubb from the Broncos. Our D line is Hit.

  40. Defense Rules Says:

Mike … The fact that we did absolutely nothing to bolster this roster during pre-season or up to this trade deadline tells me all I need to know. We’re screwed not just for this year but for several to come.

Next year we’re ALREADY over-committed on our projected salary CAP and we won’t even have a proven starting QB (Brady will be long gone once 2022 ends). Shaq will probably take a year to get back to 100% so we won’t have any DEs/OLBs worth a hoot AND we won’t even have a quality DLine (I’m admittedly disappointed in Vea; he’ll never be the second coming of Sapp or Suh in terms of production or leadership). The rest of our DLine is meh at best.

Doubt that we’ll re-sign LVD because of his age, and there’s a good chance we won’t give White a 2nd contract either. So then our ILBs (and OLBs) are shot. I doubt we’ll be able to afford Dean (I love the way he’s playing), but SMB is a possibility. Maybe Edwards too. Logan Ryan won’t be back so our Secondary will be toast also.

We’ve already seen how shallow the offense is (OLine, TEs, even WR depth). This is what happens when you keep kicking the salary CAP can down the street; sooner or later yo have to pay up. Just like the Falcons had to, and the Panthers had to. Bucs and Saints are next.

Sad part is that it doesn’t matter who you bring in as coaches; they’re toast about every 2 years (like Raheem, Schiano, Lovie, Dirk Koetter). Can’t win without the horses.

  41. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Bucs will be “edge rusher” shopping.

If JTS was gonna be some special edge rusher, we shoulda seen hints of it, by now. To say he’s very athletic, don’t mean squat. Anyone who plays in the NFL, is very athletic. People sound like parrots, repeating what they hear someone else, over and over.
    “he’s very athletic” lol

It’s a shame what happened to Shaq. Not good.

  42. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Bucs should bring in another high dollar player that can’t keep air in his tires, to shore things up, lol

  43. adam from ny Says:

i think nelson might hang tough during these times…

but i worry about joe sho…dude needs to be a football player – the time is now – we know he’s an athletic guy and all that good stuff – but now we need a football player to ball out

  44. adam from ny Says:

    omg jpp is missed now…………..badly

    imagine he was still unsigned…

wouldn’t it be a guarantee that we’d bring him back ???

  45. beano Says:

“Defense Rules Says: Beano … Do you REALLY want to be the team that benches The GOAT in favor of a 3rd string QB? I don’t.”

I’ve never said “bench” Brady. I’ve said give Trask “playing time”. It’s what’s best for the Bucs’ future.

  46. Adrnagy Says:

Being athletic doesn’t mean your good. Remember OJ Howard … this is the time for joe tryon. Next 5-6 games. What else you want as a player. Sit behind Jpp , shaq , suh and then start.

  47. Browsing from DC via MA Says:

And not grabbing Chubb from the Broncos to replace Shaq was GM malpractice. A first round draft pick? I think we could have afforded that and cut someone for the cap space. Plenty of guys to choose from there.

    BTW…any Gio sightings lately?

  48. JeffreyLane77 Says:

We drafted JTS in 2021 then in 2022 we drafted Logan Hall another DE. The knock on JTS was he opted out in college because of Covid. But he was a promising player that needed to learn technique. We had Shaq Barret and JPP when they drafted JTS. He seemed like a luxury pick to me at the time. This guy reminds me of those Clemson DE’s we drafted. They get right up to the QB then don’t finish the play. This kid will finally get some playing time. Teams are going to run right at him until JTS shows he can stop them.

But seriously we drafted a DE in back to back drafts

  49. JeffreyLane77 Says:

I guess my point is players drafted in the first and second round shouldn’t be developmental players.

  50. lambchop Says:

    @adam from ny,

JPP hasn’t really done a whole lot this season so far. Sometimes you have to move on. I wanted JPP back, but he isn’t the same player. Maybe it’s the scheme, maybe it’s because he’s being eased back into the line up, but he is taken out of the rotation more in Baltimore than I’m ever used to seeing him being taken out.

But, he’s already made an impact in a couple of games with sacks, so from a production standpoint, he will outshine JTS. But, I think they want to know what they have in JTS well before next year’s draft.

  51. Adrnagy Says:

    I wanted
Suh back. Not having safety adams hurts. The guy was a backup and played well. Knew the system vs. Neal.

  52. Rod Munch Says:

Defense Rules — hahaha, that does read completely differently that way, I didn’t even realize that until you pointed it out.

  53. RSJCheapSeats Says:

Barrett really didn’t blossom until his fifth season. Way too early to know how good Tyron will be.

But I think fans are about to see how valuable Barrett was.

People don’t get that we mortgaged a good part of the future to get Brady the near perfect roster. There was no way we could have fit someone like Chubb.

  54. Defense Rules Says:

JeffreyLane77 … ‘We drafted JTS in 2021 then in 2022 we drafted Logan Hall another DE.’

JTS was surely drafted as a DE/OLB, but supposedly Hall was drafted by the Bucs as a DT. Because of his size/weight, I kept insisting the Bucs would use him outside during his first year or 2, until he got bigger & stronger. I’ve contended all along that he was too light/not strong enough to play inside next to Vea.

So where do they have him playing? Yup, primarily inside. If you take a look at where the Ravens ran the most effectively (to the right side), I’m guessing that’s who they ran over. Hall finished that game with 2 tackle ASSISTS (no solo tackles) in 30 def snaps. On the season he now has 2 sacks & 4 QB hits in 213 def snaps.
    I’m unimpressed.

Other DLinemen haven’t been any more impressive though. Gholston has been playing more than ever, but his stats are way down (0 sacks & 3 QB hits in 251 snaps). RNR is even worse (0 sacks & 0 QB hits in 270 snaps). O’Connor also has 0 sacks & 0 QB hits in 29 snaps, while Senat has at least has 1 sack & 1 QB hit in his 93 snaps. Vea the only DLineman putting up any halfway decent stats, but of course he is making more than all the rest of them combined.

  55. Mike Johnson Says:

I agree with you Defense Rules. Fans are cryin for new coaches. But it won’t matter..Not with this cast of merry sad men. Like I’ve said, we have our one superbowl for the decade. They do not come around often. Bradys gone next yr. And he had better be real careful not..to get carted off the field this year. IF..the Bucs can string together 2 straight, We might have something. But I do not see it. Esp with this current defense. Teams are getting ready to run all over, between and right down our throats. Who is going to stop them?

  56. Goatfarmer Says:

Warren – we need you man. Put on a jersey. Even now you’d be better than most on defense for a few plays. !

  57. Goatfarmer Says:

    I’m just cryin.’

Sobbin’ like miss congeniality in an ugly pageant.

    Drinkin.’

    Cryin.

    Drinkin.

    Errrrp.

  58. Tony1775 Says:

JTS, 1st Rnd project. He plays like a project.

  59. Rudy Says:

Beckles is trash, and his opinions are of players who happen to have made major impacts on our team. Just Google something like “was Ian Beckles good” or something like that. It’s stupefying. The players he HAS singled out would be season-saviors right now.. I doubt he has the clout to run them off. These were just dumb ego decisions by a staff that lost their championship appetite or got distracted by delusions of grandeur. I was not a fan of losing a single player, but all the players who chose to leave were instrumental in both our former success as well as our current demise. Arians is an exceptional coach, but a failure at front office “advisory”.

  60. Ant Farmer Says:

Time to move to a 4-3 and let Nelson replace Barrett with Nassib as BU.

  61. garro Says:

Yes needs to be on the field… But when he is on the field he is costing us much like D White. Out of position cant get off blocks and runs himself out of plays.

  62. garro Says:

Beckles just needs to go and hunt up a job with BSPN where all the other “personalities” are.
