Sloppy Football Needs To Stop

October 5th, 2022

Be smarter.

If you take care of the little things, the big things will take care of themselves.

The NFL has played four games, nearly 1/4 of the schedule. So teams’ strengths and weaknesses are beginning to emerge.

For the Bucs, a bad trait is surfacing — they’re too often are playing with their heads up their tailpipes.

That seems to be what Joe’s good friend Mike Tanier of Football Outsiders is trying to say.

Simply put, Tanier thinks the Bucs are too sloppy football to be considered one of the league’s elite teams. The Bucs have the talent, but not enough to overcome dumb, easily correctable mistakes against good teams (see: losses to the Packers and Chiefs).

Keep up the sloppy play, Tanier hints, and it’s a one-and-done appearance in the playoffs.

The Buccaneers are now 0-2 against the Packers and Chiefs, two teams they need to be able to beat to make the Brady encore worthwhile, and they have fallen behind by a combined 42-20 score in those games. The Bucs just aren’t good enough to overcome fumbles on kickoffs, strip-sacks, an out-of-bounds kickoff that gave the Chiefs a breathing-room field goal, and other miscues. They’re about to catch a break in the schedule, and they’ll be fine thanks to the overall weakness of the NFC. But if the Buccaneers were in the AFC, they would be the Broncos.

Tanier is right on. If the Bucs don’t commit that sinful delay of game penalty at the end of the loss to the Packers, who knows? The Chiefs curb-stomped the Bucs but take away the dumb mistakes, with Tom Brady at quarterback, maybe the Bucs make it a game or better?

One could throw in the loss to the Rams in the playoffs last year and how the Bucs’ weren’t ready for Cooper Kupp to destroy them in the final seconds. Though the Bucs had a better team last year, injuries gave the Bucs little room for error.

The good news here is that the NFC South is horrible outside and the Bucs are starting to get healthy at receiver. Can the Bucs find a way to stop shooting themselves in the foot before Brady strangles someone?

Yep, it’s been clear from game 1. This team is missing Arians.

  2. Jeff Says:

Bucs are poorly coached. There is a good reason why nobody wanted sleepy Todd Bowles as their team’s HC. He’s clueless. He’s stubborn. He’s Tony Dungy 2.0 without the wins.

  3. Kody Says:

    Agree with @Show Me

Bowles and Leftwich are a big problem

  4. CrackWise Says:

Is it just me or all these losers talking crap about are coaches just looking for an excuse to try and make themselves look and feel better???

Man, everyone is making so many EXCUSES these days. What happened to the good old days when EVERYONE was PERFECT at EVERYTHING!!!

Dam you Eve, WHY!!!!!!!!!!! meh, women. I love them STILL, just like you clowns.

  5. CrackWise Says:

Oh yeah and if Brady can’t throw the ball come playoff time cause his shoulder is falling off do to his recent injury and because he is throwing the ball 50 times a game.

Thats an EXCUSE because he should be able to throw that much with a bum shoulder and Todd sucks as a coach because he should have run the ball more.

Just covering the narrative of the future so you truly hardened rejects don’t have to think about it later.

NOTHING will make you people happy, and NOTHING will shut you up. UNLESS we win the SB. Then you will just shut up and become MORE BITTER because you got nothing else to offer to this fan base.

  6. pewter941 Says:

What a sloppy game, kicking the ball out of bounds, fumbles, to many men on the field penalties.

  7. Cho Says:

Better improve. Joe, I don’t agree that the Bucs had a better team last year. This is the most talented team Tampa Bay has had in my opinion. Logan Ryan was an amazing addition. I love all the rookies. I think Hicks is better than Suh (some on this site won’t like it) and when he gets back he’ll be a game changer. Russell Gage is better than our third WR last year. Two things we have taken a step back on for sure: TE and depth at OLB. Other than that, greatest Bucs team I’ve seen.

  8. Joe Says:

Russell Gage is better than our third WR last year.

Third receiver last year was Antonio Brown. C’mon, now.

  9. Wild Bill Says:

Got to remember other teams improve too. And they are all fired up to play the Bucs. Being a recent Super Bowl winner and a playoff round team last year puts an extra target on the Bucs! Opposing coaches have an easy time motivating their troops. They all circled their calenders when the schedules came out.

  10. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

LOL, I caught that too Russell Gage is better than our 3rd receiver from last year.
We can say what we want about Antonio Brown, but even 10 Russell Gage’s will not strike fear in opposing defenses like Antonio Brown.

As far as coaching our team goes, the New York Guys at my local sports bar are having a field day, now that we have lost consecutive games at home.
These guys hated Bowles up in New York, and they hate him here.

  11. Listnfrmafar Says:

Crackhead, do you really believe Bucs weren’t out coached? How about the GB game? The D started unprepared (2 games in a row). Yes the White turnover didn’t help but it wasn’t like the D made any effort to keep them from scoring immediately. I’ll even give you those 7 points ts but Bucs still loose. Brady’s sack fumble is a wash with Mahomes pick as far as points. I know I blow a lot of smoke up TB12’s arse but c’mon in the last two games until Bucs went hurry up and Brady took over the offense they couldn’t move the ball. I still can’t get over a run up the middle 1st &20 and stalling a drive with a double reverse pass with backups. The timeout debacle was just the icing on the cake. BAD COACHING leads to bad play and discipline issues, that’s a fact?

  12. CrackWise Says:

    @Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa

Good point regarding the NY folks. I totally agree and can’t believe I missed that point.

It explains a lot actually. Now THAT is an Excuse. I feel sorry for those people. NY is a DUMP. I just wish they would leave their crappy attitudes up there!!!

  13. Wild Bill Says:

@Crackwise. When the Bucs got down by 21 to 3 and the run game was being stuffed they were forced to throw. With a total combined score of over 70 points defense was not exceptional for either team.

  14. CrackWise Says:

    @Listnfrmafar

For starters, you disrespect for yourself carries over in how you address others. The least you can do is respect my name. NO REASON not to.

That said, I don’t believe you know how to read and comprehend. I also don’t believe you want to have an honest conversation. Your clearly agenda driven. So, I won’t wasting my time talking to you or reading you non sensical redirect anymore. I encourage other to do the same.

I will leave you with this. Todd was 100% responsible for a masterful coaching job in our Super Bowl victory. I will continue to give him the benefit of the doubt no matter what. While ignoring people starved for attention like you.

If you want to blame a CAT 5 Hurrican on Todd not having the team fully focused and prepared for KC. Thats fine, you’re an idiot and your intitled to be one.

If you want to blame Todd for not having any of his starting WRs and a depleted OL for losing to GB. Thats fine as well. Your intitled to ignore facts as well.

That said, your opinion is useless, and you are truly worthy of being ignored by me from now on.

You clearly are incapable of Cracking Wise. So, your welcomed to stay Cracked Out

  16. CrackWise Says:

    @Wild Bill

I get it. I think the team showed up TIRED and not focused on the task at hand.

It was as clear as day that they were gonna get beat from kickoff on.

To your point. I don’t credit Brady with having a good game just because he scooped up GARBAGE time yards/stats.

We should not of abandoned the run game. Even though it was apparent we needed to score in a hurry. All it did was give KC more opportunities to wreck a tired D.

  17. Kentucky Buc Says:

WildBill. Agree Bill. While the Chiefs are celebrating they should be concerned about their D.

  18. CrackWise Says:

    @Listnfrmafar

You’re lucky my post to you keep getting pulled by Joe.

Bottom line, you are an embarrassment to this fanbase and do not deserve anymore of my time.

People like you deserve to be ignored into oblivion!!!

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Third receiver last year was Antonio Brown. C’mon, now..

Great catch. Same though with Cho’s ‘I think Hicks is better than Suh’ comment. In our first 4 games this season, Hicks has exactly 0 sacks, 1 QB hit. In his first 4 games last season, Suh at least had 1 sack & 3 QB hits. Availability counts.

  20. Defense Rules Says:

Chris … ‘As far as coaching our team goes, the New York Guys at my local sports bar are having a field day, now that we have lost consecutive games at home. These guys hated Bowles up in New York, and they hate him here.’

Actually your last sentence made me feel a LOT better about Todd Bowles. If the ‘New York Guys’ hate him here, he must be doing something right.

  21. Infomeplease Says:

Until most of our receivers and o line are healthy, this team will thrive or die by the hands of the defense. The defense needs to start strong on the first drive!! Get off the field on 3rd downs!! Not at halftime!! LFG!!

  22. Goatfarmer Says:

    Rachel the Idiot.

  23. Bucamania Says:

As Bowles said, the poor play falls on him. The sloppy play, poor tackling and stupid penalties all falls on coaching and a lack of leadership among players.

  24. Killian Says:

One could argue that fumbles have cost us two games.

  25. Goatfarmer Says:

Suh. Now. For leadership. Before it’s too late.

  26. lambchop Says:

Big things don’t take care of themselves either. They need to tighten the ship. No more excuses.

But, I’m ok with 2-2, just not with the costly self-inflicted wounds. 2020 was a roller coaster of a year, but they got hot at the right time. We need to get back to winning in this next quarter (4 games).

    Go Bucs!

  27. Bucs since 76 Says:

Under Brady we are not a team that can run the ball. We must pass to set up the run.

  28. Listnfrmafar Says:

Crackhead, apparently you have comprehension issues. I stated the hurricane was clearly a distraction but as someone else mentioned Brady and Evan’s and I am sure others were very prepared and focused. I admit 100% my issue with the Bucs is its coaching staff and has been since Brady arrived. Bowles did put together a great SB game plan but as much of a distraction Ian was so was missing starting olinemen, Mahomes turf toe and Reids kid/asst.coach arrested for vehicle manslaughter and dui. Do you deny those distractions? Are their players getting lazy on this team, yes and I point them out. I also don’t believe GB or KC are a more talented team, they are better coached. It can’t be anymore obvious than their offensive schemes. Bowles is a two time loser and was granted the job by BA. As far as reading my posts I really do not care and honestly read your own, they are as if not more negative than mine. BTW, calling someone an idiot is also offensive.

  29. Bucamania Says:

Just read Bowles is off today for personal reasons. This whole team is a load of distractions.

  30. PewterStiffArm Says:

Sloppy football has a way of appearing at the most unopportuned time and biting a team square in the ass.

  31. Pewter Warrior 813 Says:

Bucs have yet to play a turnover free game on offense. Gotta protect the ball and TB 12 to have a chance.

Being stagnant on offense with ZERO creativity is a problem. Chiefs ran a TE sneak for a TD, Byron doesn’t even know you can do that. His mentality is always out talent not out scheme and that’s a problem

  32. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

I wana punch everyone in the gut after last weeks game and another punch for the packers game.

  33. Show Me the TDs Says:

The team is undisciplined. Reminds me of the years before BA showed up. #backtothefuture.

  34. Goatfarmer Says:

Bowles is off? Give him a leave of absence to deal with his stuff and name BA interim Head Coach.

  35. Tony1775 Says:

Joe Tyron is weak. He is not gonna make it.

  36. Carl L Says:

BA became a great head coach when Winston left and Tom Brady arrived. Perhaps Brady should be named Head Coach and let Bowles go to Cleveland.

  37. Carl L Says:

Antonio brown 3rd receiver last year? Before or after the 15 year old kid took his shirt off and left the field. He became our “ left out” receiver.

  38. captivajim Says:

Gage and White need to do a LOT more than just show up …….

  39. Goatfarmer Says:

If Rachel just didn’t show up it would be addition by subtraction. He is a fumbler. That won’t change.

  40. firethecannons Says:

fumbles that are hugely detrimental to the outcome, stupid penalties (punter kicks out of bounds!) horse collar tackle for 15 yards! it just goes on and on some players are worthless after you subtract their penalties

  41. firethecannons Says:

JTS needs to prove himself this week otherwise switch Anthony Nelson into his spot

  42. Defense Rules Says:

firethecannons … I agree with you about Anthony Nelson. He impressed me last year with his increase in production (5 sacks, 10 QB hits, 7 TFLs in only 358 def snaps). He’s off to an even faster start this year (2 sacks, 2 QB hits, 2 TFLs in only 83 def snaps). Seems to be one of those making the most of his time on the field. Needs to get a lot more def snaps IMO.

Another player doing the same is Keanu Neal. His productivity is off the charts IMO. He’s only gotten 49 def snaps (all but 3 in the KC game because Ryan got hurt) but he’s excelled: 9 solo tackles & 1 QB hit with 1 blitz. Chiefs targeted him only once; incomplete. I’m impressed.

Our youngsters seem to be shell-shocked to this point. JTS has gotten 193 def snaps (69%) but has minimal productivity: 0.5 sacks, 2 QB hits & 1 TFL in 4 games. From what I’ve seen, he doesn’t seem to be doing a consistent job in run defense (which is where his predecessor, JPP, excelled).

Logan Hall is faring about the same: 1 sack, 2 QB hits & 2 TFLs in 4 games (105 def snaps). What’s bizarre is that virtually all of that came in the Green Bay game (he was skunked in the others).

Suh & JPP would’ve whipped those two into shape real fast.

  43. Redeemer Says:

CrackWise, your reference about the Superbowl, and Bowles tremendous gameplan couldn’t be more far off. The Chiefs offensive line was decimated. It also helps to host the superbowl. Absolutely no way is this team better than last year. Had Godwin not been injured, and AB not gone full bananas, they probably win two in a row.

  44. Mackey Says:

I got a really bad feeling when Arians took the front office job and Bowles got promoted. Bowles is really just one step above Lovie Smith as Bucs head coach. We need an offensive genius like Arians to jump start this team. Send Bowles back to being defensive co-ordinator (which is his best destiny). And Leftwich is lost without Arians.

  45. Mackey Says:

The coaching this year has been as successful as having Greg Schiano or Lovie as head coach. Oh, well. It’s early in the season. Hopefully I will be proven wrong.

  46. garro Says:

This team needs to get more leadership from players and coaches.
We turned the ball over on our own 20 twice.

The 2002 defense always, and I mean always, took those situations as a challenge.

Leaders like Sapp, Ronde, Brooks, Rice, and Lynch wouldnt allow a letdown.

Often they stiffened up and held opponents to field goals, forced them back out of field goal range with a sack or got turnovers.

I dont see that kind of leadership or mental toughness with this bunch.

  47. garro Says:

What I do see is a lack of discipline, and a bunch of selfish grandstanders. Looking at you JTS and White.

Great coaches motivate players.Looking at you Bowles and Byron. Great players lead. Sometimes by example sometimes with words and sometimes with both.
