Career Game For Jamel Dean

September 18th, 2022

Monster game.

Cornerback Jamel Dean put his foot down months ago. It’s a contract year for him and he’s shooting for a fat bag in free agency.

Some players don’t talk cash; Dean flashed his trademark smile and said he was prepping to dominate and cash in.

First, he won the starting outside cornerback job opposite Carlton Davis, putting Sean Murphy-Bunting on the bench. Then he balled out for what’s been the NFL’s best defense through two weeks — by a mile.

Today Dean hauled in two interceptions and they weren’t flukes. Those two match is total from 2021, and it’s same total he had during his 2019 rookie season.

Dean is long, fast and physical, and if he can develop good hands (something he’s worked on big-time), then the Bucs have something very special.

Joe can only imagine the huge grin on general manager Jason Licht’s face when he thinks about his pair of 25-year-old cornerbacks in his handcrafted secondary. Licht has done a masterful job building what appears to be the best defensive backfield in the game.

Anyone miss Jordan Whitehead?

  15. Dano Says:

Vea and Hicks got dominated. Our DBs saved us. Who woulda thought?

  16. CrackWise Says:

That was by far one of the worst officiated games I have seen in a long long time.

They were the story of the game up until ME threw a monkey wrench in things.

Seriously, that game was shaping up to make us all complainers and whinners BIG TIME.

THANK YOU MIKE. I will never forget these amazing moments you keep giving us. WE SO LOVE YOU BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. George Says:

Dean was very helpful to The Bucs cause today. Will need similar performances the next two weeks .

  18. firethecannons Says:

  21. geno711 Says:

George on two occasions you predicted the Bucs would only win 6 games.

    What do you think now?

  22. Goatfarmer Says:

Todd has his defense playing reminiscent of the days of Sapp Brooks Barber Nickerson Lynch Barber Simeon Shelton Kelly

  23. Bucfan Says:

This Defense is a special group that plays with passion and has a *hit ton of talent.

  24. Goatfarmer Says:

I owe Todd an apology. Still waiting on the crow for the DardOn, whose lone contribution was a holding penalty erasing a nice run.

  25. rrsrq Says:

How about a coaching staff that developed DBs

  26. Cometowin2 Says:

Dean is now playing up to his potential with his speed and length. Used to have trouble tracking the ball. He’s come a long way! Way to go Jamel!

    Go Bucs!

  27. D-Rok Says:

Grit, determination, will-power…erased a stalemate of a game through 3 quarters. It’s a sign you like to see from this team.

So pleased they woke up and pulled this game out.

These Bucs are for real, at least the D is. Hoping the O can round into better form in the next few weeks.

GO, 2-0 BUCS!!! We beat them Aints.

  28. D Says:

Player of the game, and it’s not even close. We are lucky to have two shut down corners. With D like this who needs offense!?

  29. Goatfarmer Says:

In other news….Cowboys are giving the Bengals supposedly retooled O-line fits.

  30. JimmyJack Says:

Grover great point about Winfield. Made several great open field tackles.

  31. Letsbucinggo Says:

Hope we can afford Dean next year.

  32. Brandon Says:

Been saying he’s our top CB for past two years. Brain dead fans have been hyper critical of him for a while. They need to STFU. He’s one of the best in the NFL.

  33. orlbucfan Says:

If this Defense stays healthy, they may top Dungy’s brilliant Tampa Two D. Plus, a lot of these youngsters already have SB rings so the skies the limit!

  34. Buczilla Says:

I pretty much ripped this dude all offseason for his inconsistency, tendency to get injured, and the coaches decision not to start him much as you would expect a good player to start. I’m thrilled to be wrong on this dude so far this year and Dean was a huge part of our win today.

  35. MadMax Says:

    Dean is def a keeper!

  36. David Says:

I’ve been calling it since last year, saying that he’s a better CB because of his speed. That interception he had on the deep ball in the end zone was a thing of beauty.

SMB is a very good CB but he needs to be a smart player in zone, he can’t handle tight coverage man to man like Davis and Dean can.

My guess is they pay Dean, let SMB walk when his contract is up and Zyon steps into that 3rd CB slot

  37. Goatfarmer Says:

The DBs are the strength of the defense. Where are all the morons calling them trash?

Thanks to them and to Todd and Logan Ryan for learning their schemes, assignments and executing the game plan. Ryan’s peanut punch was the real play of the game. Saints score a TD there, it’s over.
