Another Hamstring Injury And Julio Jones Is Hurt

September 14th, 2022

“Gettin’ old sucks, Julio.”

The first official injury report of the week has been released at One Buc Palace, also known as One Hamstring Place.

Now it’s Leonard “Lombardi Lenny” Fournette landing on the injured list with a hamstring issue. He was “limited” in practice today. Receivers Russell Gage and Chris Godwin missed practice entirely with bad hamstrings, as did rookie cornerback Zyon McCollum.

Mike Evans is nursing a calf issue and was limited. And throw two more receivers into the medical mix, with Julio Jones out of practice with a new knee injury and Breshad Perriman limited with a knee.

Donovan Smith, as expected, was out with his bad elbow.

Joe is freakin’ dizzy seeing all these new names on the injury report. The Julio knee issue really popped Joe’s happy balloon.

On the slimy Saints front, Sunday’s Bucs opponent, quarterback Jameis Winston was limited with a back injury. Saints backup Andy Dalton was warming up Sunday in Atlanta to replace Jameis but Jameis stayed in the game after trainers worked with him.

  1. Logan Says:

Breshad Perriman is a waste of a roster spot. He’s always hurt and he can’t catch.

  2. Goatfarmer Says:

    This is a disaster.

  3. Buczilla Says:

    F!

On a side note, I pay very little attention to any other team other than ours, so I’m wondering if these pulled hamstrings are chronic throughout the league, or just our team?

  4. Bucanero Says:

Relax 80% will play on Sunday and look at the bright spot, our D is 100% healthy

  5. Buc4evr Says:

Don’t worry Darden will save the day. Too bad they dumped Tyler Johnson…

  6. Leopold Stotch Says:

What a bummer for Wednesday. Need that TB12 method to work overtime

  7. A Bucs Fan Says:

I knew all of these would show up. Bucs are a banged up bunch on offense. It will come down to defense this week.

  8. Jeff Says:

Lol! The Bucs new SuperStar receiver is know known as “one-game Julio.”

  9. Mike Says:

    Practice squad elevations in 3, 2, 1…

  10. CrackWise Says:

@Buc4evr did you see how well Tyler player this past weekend? Yeah no one did cause he was a no show for the game.

Regarding the injuries, not worried what so ever. WHY? Because are a smash mouth team. Our OLine is heathy and our TEs our healthy and we have 4 capable running backs.

ME will get his yards and TDs this game. Im thinking 150 and 2. We will dominate the Saints this game. WHY? Because our D will stay fresh as our O controls the TOP.

This will be the case until we get past these first 4 games

  11. Rod Munch Says:

It’s week 2 and we’re going to be starting Scotty Miller, who wasn’t even active last week…

  12. Rod Munch Says:

Before we panic too much, lets see what happens in the next practice. This is a veteran team and we’re playing to win a SB, so they might just be being extra careful as they’re playing for a SB, not a 1st quarter championship.

  13. Ash Says:

Oof thought we were past this since last year was so injury plagued what a bummer.

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

Like I said when Fournette reported to camp overweight. Don’t worry about him. He’s a pros pro. If he can go, he will play and play hard. He will be ready for the Saints. If our D plays well, I think we beat the saints bad.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

I’ll be concerned when they don’t make the trip.

I suspect Bowles will keep a lot of guys “limited” with tweaks.

    Psy-Ops.

  16. Goatfarmer Says:

If Fournette and Evans were “limited,” it means they’ll play.

Any word on Julio’s knee, as in what kind of injury is it?

And I thought Godwin tweaked his hammy. If it’s his knee, very very bad.

  17. Patrick grems Says:

I knew that deep pass hurt julio

  18. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Goatfarmer – it was his hamstring. His knee came out 100% fine by all accounts I’ve read.

  19. Marc Coppola Says:

Everyone will play except for maybe Godwin. Much adu about nothing.

  20. Irishmist Says:

God, I hope Winston is OK.

Cobra can address this far better than me but I believe you see so many hammys in football because it’s full of fast twitch muscled athletes. Explosive muscles are great for some performances but not others.

Look at track and field. How many marathoners do you see come up with pulled hammies. Sprinters on the other hand fear their hammies as much as football players.

The hole in my theory is basketball…another sport designed for guy with strong fast twitch explosive muscles but the players do seem longer and more limber and obviously less bulked up.

Bottom line…I do not accuse these guys of juicing at all because there are now enough “natural” supplements and training techniques to build muscles too explosive for your natural body to support. In addition the vast majority of NFL players are already carrying more weight and muscle than is healthy for their frames. It’s the cost of doing business. Then look at them after they retire.
Brad Culpepper is exhibit A but even the guys like Marpet and others drop weight as soon as they’re out of the league.

We and they are simply asking too much out of their bodies and so it becomes a bit of a crapshoot before the body says no and a hammy goes..or a calf..or in a strength position like the line perhaps even upper body muscles.

  23. Ed Says:

Practice squad WR Deven Thompkins made some highlight plays in preseason and practiced well. They should activate him if Jones, Perriman and Godwin are banged up. I think its time to let Perriman loose, he’s bounced around the league for years and didn’t look very good vs Dallas.

Is Cyril Grayson still available or did he get picked up elsewhere? Would rather see him out there instead of Perriman. Darden will get some opportunities, he’s not a punt returner, maybe he’ll grab a few balls as a WR. Watching him on TV he seems to lack any strength.

  24. Goatfarmer Says:

A Bucs Fan – that’s what I thought I’d heard, then I thought I’d read the Joes mentioning knee but I see now it’s hammy.

Paranoid PTSD from being a Bucs fan, thanks for reinforcing the situation.

  25. orlbucfan Says:

What’s with Winston’s back? I ‘m not worried. Our D is healthy and so’s most of the team. We get through these first 4 games w/out Buc Luck biting us, we’ll be fine.

  26. Dewey Selmon Says:

Smokescreen, they are trying to force N.O. to have to waste time with adjustments.

  27. JimmyJack Says:

Goat anybody thats been a Bucs fan for at least 5 years already knows Mike is playing. Youre literally gonna have to see Evans rip a hamstring clean off the bone and hop into the endzone onelegged, like he did in 2019, to keep him out. You can count on Mike.

Fournette is not a guy we can lose. Not for this game. He is too big a part of the offense.

But the big one is Donovan Smith. I already dont trust D.Smith vs Cam Jordan. I really dont wanna see how ugly it can get with a downgrade at LT.

  28. Crickett Baker Says:

@ED, Cyril got waived as injured and got a settlement. As far as I can tell no one has picked him up. We seem to have most of our WR on that darn injured list. Guess we will have another low passing game. IDK but I expect to win since hoping is out.

  29. Todd Says:

Vita Vay reported to be taking reps at slot receiver.

  30. Zwak Says:

Our health and conditioning staff is not very good!

  31. JimmyJack Says:

The most funniest comments here are the ones whining, crying and wimpering for Tyler Johnson. I swear you people dont pay attention. We saw this exact scenario play out last year and Tyler was elevated to starting reciever. He did absolutely nothing and thats surely a big reason why he didnt make the team.

Are you really begging to see Tyler back in our lineup doing nothing again?

  32. BucU Says:

Holy Shyt this team is brittle af!

  33. BucU Says:

I love a lot of these comments. We need like or dislike options here.

  34. Beeej Says:

How typical. I drop Godwin from my fantasy team, replace him with Julio. Now Julio messed up

  35. sasquatch Says:

The Bucs may over-report injuries. Psyche out the opposition.

  36. Ralphy Says:

Joe, this article regarding hamstring injuries in the NFL and $4million dollars in research funding tells me that hamstring issues are extremely common in the NFL, not just to the Bucs.

  37. #8 Says:

Brady used to be on New England’s injury report every week…I sense some gamesmanship.
My bicep is injured from lite curls.
    Suh.

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If Winston’s back was bothering him….just wait until Devin White rides him like he did Josh Allen……
    Getty Up……Ricky Bobby!!!

I’ll start to be concerned when I see the inactive list…..The only real concerning news is Julio….we need him playing with Mike Sunday….

Apparently, the only one not hurt is Scotty Miller (inactive)….so let’s keep him out of practice until Sunday….

    It’s grond & pound and passes to Lenny, Rachaad & Gio….with a few to Brate & Otton…

  39. D-Rok Says:

Well, and that’s a deep subject….well, IF all these injuries are legit and hamper players from playing or playing well….WELL, we do have other players on our team to step up. Would I ever want to sit Evans and elevate Miller (or whomever) in his place just for fun? Hellz naw. But let’s just see, my fellow fine-feathered fans. Let’s see. Don’t get too upset just yet. I’ve learned to be patient as a 4-decade-watching fan. Attrition in the NFL is real, but it’s too early in the week to freak.

We, and by we I mean, the team, has got this. They are professional athletes and coaches for a reason – because they are the best in the world at what they do.

    Consider me optimistic.

    GO BUCS!!!

  40. Scott Says:

irishmist says god i hope winston ok lol ,with our defense and the empty hole between his ears we dont need any offense

  41. ClwJB Says:

The hump day injury report rarely translates to game day

Gamesmanship is not just a word

  42. Smashsquatch Says:

Pretty sure Julio is nursing a knee contusion. Looked like he planted on that knee pretty hard when he caught the bomb from Brady.

  43. Ed Says:

The NFL has cracked down on false medical injuries, (Just Saying)

stpete, I was a football player in HS and college. I never had enough talent to make it into the league, although that was my dream in life. I played 2-ways in HS as a RB and a Mike LB. I was also a pole-vaulter on the track team, and threw a few discus and shot when the team needed someone.

I never did roids, but I saw guys who did. They got big and fast and strong super quick, no doubt. And then when they quit? They shriveled up in like 6 months. Most of us athletes could spot a roid user quick as snot.

The fact that Marpet lost so much weight so quick…it does make one wonder.

  46. IrishTony Says:

Honestly that Bowles said today has me concerned about anyone’s availability except Godwin. My sense is that Jones and Gage will play as should Smith.

  47. Duane Says:

No way Fournette misses the opportunity to play in front of his family and friends in New Orleans. Most of our banged up players are veterans. You gotta nurse them along during the week, and putting them on the report is what it is. Some of them should play, and the Saints still have to prepare to face most of them this week.

  48. Mr. Editor Says:

I’m hoping that this is all gamesmanship by the Bucs. It’s been done to them by many other teams throughout the years.

  49. Oxycondoms Says:

Felt like tyler johnson was always available

  50. Crickett Baker Says:

Well, the Texans grabbed Tyler so we will get to see how he does.

  51. captivajim Says:

Gage looks like a waste of roster position..he’s done next to nothing…for us to rely on Darden going up against slimies is WAY more than stupid . we let Johnson & Grayson go ????

  52. Bucsfan13 Says:

Bucs might have the worst strength and conditioning program in the NFL. Every single year they have copious amounts of soft tissue (and specifically hamstring) injuries. It seems way out of proportion. And don’t blame the heat. I don’t see the same situation with the Dolphins. Could the Joes ask Bowles about this. I guarantee Tom isn’t happy with the pile up of soft tissue injuries. Health and fitness are his life.

  53. Melvin Junior Says:

Amazing that after (seemingly) three-plus MONTHS of resting/doing NOTHING, that Gage’s “hamstring” is STILL Jacked… Unbelievable. Makes absolutely, NO Sense… Unless, the Bucs “training staff” is nothing but just pure TRASH.

  54. Stanglassman Says:

Lots of professional trainers on JBF community board.

    ————————-

I doubt Cobra Boy has any knowledge that I don’t have on this subject. Football and basketball are completely different sports. Football is a lot of stop and start, hard cutting, and tons of sprinting, while basketball is continuous motion and played under far more control. Football also has their players come off the field for several minutes at a time and the players get cold and then have to go back in and immediately sprint top speed their first play back in. The longest plays in football don’t last more than 8-10 seconds (special teams returns) and most plays last less than six seconds. There’s about 130-150 or so plays per game, almost all of those plays involve players giving a max sprint or a max press movement. It is the most anaerobic of all sports because after the play, there is a 30 second rest period between the next one. Basketball is continuous… continuous activity is better for soft tissue as the players stay warm. Also, the basketball court is a mere 30 yards long and about 16 yards wide… players are NEVER able to sprint full speed in basketball… if by some chance they did get to full speed… they would have to stop immediately. Hamstrings are starting and sprinting injuries… these are all major reasons football has a lot more than basketball.

Also, hamstring issues, and all soft tissue injuries, occur far more frequently at the beginning of the season. No matter how much simulation training athletes do, there is no substitute for game play. Also…. most muscle pulls and tears occur very early in a game or very late. They are most often a result of a muscle being used too hard that isn’t sufficiently warm or a muscle that is over tired and pushed past capacity.

  56. Brandon Says:

BTW, marathoners don’t pull their hammies because they rarely engage in an all out sprint. If they TRIED to do more sprints, most would have far more injuries because they have overtrained their slow-twitch fibers and undertrained their fast twitch. This is why i’ve always forbade any of my athletes from competing in long distance or cross country during the offseason from their sports. They absolutely don’t mix… and when they do… hamstrings and shin splints… constantly. Those athletes that didn’t take my advice were constantly hurt. There is ABSOLUTELY no jogging in ball sports unless you are losing… no reason to train your body to be good at jogging if you need to be good at sprinting.

  57. Brandon Says:

And marathoners have very little range of motion on their strides and get limited hip flexion nor do they ever start off fast and torque their muscles.

  58. Lee Says:

This is exactly what happens when the starters play zilch in the preseason.
