Baker Mayfield Becomes New NFC South Quarterback

July 6th, 2022

Bucs rival now.

The Stinking Panthers became less horrible today.

As if the Bucs need any more competition, the Bucs just got some. Estranged Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was traded to the Stinking Panthers. He will almost assuredly take over for Sam Darnold as the starter.

The Stinking Panthers have talent, both on defense and on offense. Thankfully, they were held back by truly atrocious quarterback play. Say what you will about Mayfield — he can be a mouthy, preening schmoe — but he’s not awful.

Hopefully, this means the end to those annoying Baker-Lives-In-A-Football-Stadium insurance commercials.

The No. 1 overall pick in 2018, Mayfield has a 29-30 record as a starter and is 1-1 in the playoffs with 96 touchdowns and 57 picks in his career.

It’s a good deal for the Panthers, though I don’t think Mayfield is the long-term answer. I also don’t think Darnold is either, but at least they can roll the dice on two. All it cost was a fifth rounder and a little cap money ($5 million or so, that’s cheap). Cleveland got stuck holding the bag for most of Mayfield’s paycheck.

  2. GOB Says:

I doubt Mayfield will move the needle much. He’s certainly better than ghost seeing Sam

  3. ATLBuc Says:

If he could not take a stacked Clevelabd team to the playoffs. he will be no threat in Carolina. Its a plus for us because he will tear up the locker room if he hasnt matured since last season

  4. WalkdaPlank Says:

    ATLBuc

He won a playoff game in 2020….

  5. Joe Says:

If he could not take a stacked Clevelabd team to the playoffs.

He did. Lost a close game on the road to the eventual Super Bowl-bound Chiefs.

  6. Goatfarmer Says:

Minefield sucks. He is one QB Bowles can successfully scheme against.

  7. ATLBuc Says:

Thats just one year, Joe. They’ve been stacked for the 4 or 5 years hes been there

  8. EEK Says:

Carolina got 2-3% better; good career move for him if he can be the starter next season as well

  9. DoooshLaRue Says:

He should make our DBs look good for a couple of games.

  10. Larrd Says:

Who knows how good Baker might be? The front office and coaching have been atrocious for him, stabbing him in the back in the press and shackling him with pedestrian receivers and three tight end sets.

They claimed they needed an adult at quarterback and went out and signed a guy who may never play due to sex assault accusations, to the biggest contract in league history.

    Dumbest folks ever.

  11. PassingThru Says:

This trade might have serious upside. It might end those stupid Baker Mayfield “at home” commercials.

  12. Darin Says:

Gob. If he’s better than Sam he hasn’t shown it yet.

  13. JJ Says:

Highly likely that sometime in the next 12 months Brady will either be injured or will retire. That’s what happens to old QBs, no matter how good. NFC South will look look a lot tougher with Mayfield.

  14. D-Rok Says:

Good. Now the Panthers will be all smug thinking Baker Maynotfield will make them better. Best of luck, lads!

    GO BUCS!!!

  15. Elita Vita Says:

…..and our plan for life after Brady is……?

  16. D-Rok Says:

Ummmm – they traded Maynotfield without knowing the ruling on whether What,Son? will play this year? Silly Browns. They must know how the ruling is going to go, otherwise, DOH!!!

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Carolina really needed this…..they made a good deal……5th rounder for a starting QB……reduced salary……
Although Mayfield isn’t great….he’s much better than they had.

We should take no team for granted…..

  18. Hodad Says:

Carolina has been floundering to find a starting QB, and still is.

  19. Biff Barker Says:

Hate SJW Mayfield. Hope he bombs out. He deserved the Brown holes and the Brown holes deserved him.

Lets see what King Phoney Rodger does with Ol’ Stinkfinger Watson now.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Anytime you improve at QB, the team gets better. This makes them from a truly awful team to just a bad team, and bad teams will win games they shouldn’t – as any lifelong Bucs fans knows. Mayfield isn’t all that good, but as stated, he’s not bad, he’s just sort of a lower tier starting QB who is mainly a game manager – or at least that’s what he’s been his entire life. I think it’s a wash between him and Jimmy G, figured one would end up there. They’re probably a 6-11 team, but again, those dumb teams will win a big game here or there, I just hope their big win of the year isn’t against the Bucs.

  21. GOB Says:

Darin, I think Darnold is ruined. If you had to pick one of them for one game, would you pick him over Baker? I wouldn’t

  22. D-Rok Says:

    GOB,

    The ghosts ruined Darnold.

  23. Allbuccedup Says:

Bowles already has his eye on a Sam Donald reunion next year to be a bridge for Trask.

  24. SlyPirate Says:

CLEVELAND DIDN’T LOSE THE GAME TO KC

Cleveland won that game. The officials blew a few calls that handed KC the win. Baker was solid when healthy. He’ll make Carolina better.

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Darnold will probably ride the bench for the Panthers making $19 mil…..is a UFA in 23. Would be a good young backup for Trask at vet minimum.

  26. David Says:

    ATLBUC

Your premise is correct even though he did go to the playoffs. He had a Super Bowl ready team. The only reason they have not gone further in the last couple of years is because of him. He is not a franchise quarterback

  27. HC Grover Says:

Tought I taw a puddy tat.

  28. Allbuccedup Says:

Tampabaybucfan Donald would a lot better on the bench than Gabbert or Griffin.

  29. Craig Says:

I think Baker is better than Andy Dalton, he has won a playoff game, but that still won’t get you a lot.

He is going to try too hard and do a Jameis, 9-8, maybe.

  30. Beeej Says:

Mayfield is about same skill level as Ryan Tannehill, won’t lose the game, won’t win the game. At least we don’t have to worry about him coming here now

  31. Buc4evr Says:

He will have another melt down at some point. BTW, SUH!

  32. PassingThru Says:

Mayfield and the Cleveland defense simply choked during that playoff loss to the Chiefs. Browns trailed by 5 points in the 4th quarter, exactly 8 minutes left, ball on the Cleveland 20 with Mahomes knocked out of the game. The KC defense wasn’t as bad as most people believed, but in a crucial playoff game situation, Mayfield needed to drive his team 80 yards. He only managed to move the Browns 12 yards on 7 downs.

The Browns defense deserves a dishonorable mention as well, failing to stop Chad Henne after the Cleveland punt. But you could feel the Cleveland momentum just die after Mayfield’s inability to score, or even sustain a meaningful drive.

  33. GOB Says:

D-Rok, yes. He was never the same after that Patriots game. I bet he still has nightmares about it.

  34. BigMacAttack Says:

I think he’ll do well. Carolina is a beautiful state with lots of fun things to do. Cleveland? Lol not so much.

  35. Defense Rules Says:

There are relatively few QBs in the NFL who can truly carry a team. Tom Brady’s one of them obviously. So are Patrick Mahomes & Aaron Rodgers. Baker Mayfield isn’t one who can carry a team, BUT … surrounded by a solid team that’s well-coached, he can probably hold his own. Not sure however that the Panthers are really a ‘solid team that’s well-coached’. We’ll find out this year though.

  36. Goatfarmer Says:

The Panthers are now the Browns of the NFC South.

  37. Buccos Says:

That is two number one picks and a number 2 pick as the starting QB’s in the NFC South. And here we are with our sorry 6th rounder. How are we supposed to compete with all of this draft capital?

  38. BigMacAttack Says:

I think the Panthers just became the second best team in the NFC South. They won’t be a cake walk for the Bucs

  39. Buczilla Says:

Mayfield is an upgrade for them, but is he even average? He might be the number two quarterback in the division, but it’s close. He doesn’t make as many “wtf is he doing” buffoonish decisions as Jameis, but I’ve never seen him play out of his mind good like Jameis is capable of doing either.

  40. Hail2dabucs Says:

A well established Defence suck as the bucs will eat this poor man’s farve for sacks and picks . I can’t wait to play them now because we will make him look like he’s got damage to his throwing shoulder not his off one..go bucs

  41. Dooley Says:

How times have changed, every team in the NFC south could potentially(and realistically) start 2 different QBs in 2022 and we got Bucs guys calling for Kyle Trasks head going into the season if he can’t win the job to backup Tom Brady.

Not a Mayfield fan, always felt like college sports media types forced him on us as a result of him being the okay QB on a ridiculously talented Sooner roster. Got to the pros, and it was kind of the same thing. Can’t lie, I laughed at how the Browns basically replaced him before offloading him. Panthers aren’t half as dangerous as they used to be, and a lot of that has to do with Ron Rivera no longer being there and their QB situation being “meh” the last few seasons.

  42. Statguy Says:

Carolina finishes second if CMC stays healthy

  43. Capt.Tim Says:

    Mayfield is a good QB.
Will be the class of the division, when Brady leaves

  44. Listnfrmafar Says:

Bucs should of dumped Gabbert & Trask and grabbed Mayfield for the future. One year under Brady was all he needed to know how to act and how it’s done. As far as him on the Panthers, YAWN!

  45. 813bucboi Says:

    Baker is trash….simple as that….

The run game took baker to the playoffs….baker choked it away….

    Panthers will win 6games tops

    GO BUCS

  46. 813bucboi Says:

Baker is inaccurate, inconsistent and a horrible teammate/leader….

    Teams don’t dump good QBs….

    GO BUCS

  47. BucBoy Says:

“Listnfrmafar Says: Bucs should of dumped Gabbert & Trask and grabbed Mayfield”

Mayfield sucks. Plus he’s listed at 6’1″ which means he’s maybe 6′. Too small for the NFL.

    Gabbert sucks.

Trask hasn’t played and anyone who speaks of him as you do obviously doesn’t know chit.

  48. unbelievably good at throwing ketchup Says:

    A 2024 conditional 5th rounder, that’s all?

Chit, the Bucs should have traded for him to learn under Brady for a year and then compete with Trask the next season…

  49. Your Mom Says:

The Bucs will be good irrespective, if our season depends solely on beating Carolina we are in trouble.

But as a fan we now have two games that will be much more entertaining than the bland schedule sewers that they were. That’s what it’s all about is entertainment. Fans don’t get paid for Bucs wins remember.

  50. Listnfrmafar Says:

BucBoy@ you got the boy right, you sound like a child. Baker did choke but went to the playoffs twice. Roger’s choked to as well as Mahomes, I guess they suck to. Lousy coaching breeds lousy players. The locker room issues were allowed by previous coaches which should have been nipped in the bud Yeats ago. Bucs have NOTHING after Brady leaves.
