Gregg Rosenthal Takes A Stab At Bucs’ Opening Week Starters

May 18th, 2022

Roster predictions.

The way Joe looks at this, there should be an asterisk included.

Good guy Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com has decided to type a series of columns picking the starting roster for each NFL team.  Naturally, some are a bit trickier to predict than others (he’s just selecting offenses and defenses). For the Bucs, Rosenthal admits it was easier since there are few holes.

A few interesting observations: So as David Lee Roth once said in his song “Yankee Rose,” “Let’s roll up onto the sidewalk and take a look, yes?”

* Rosenthal believes Mike Edwards will start at safety and not Logan Ryan or Keanu Neal. Joe isn’t sure who is best but Rosenthal seems to think ball-hawking Edwards has earned a starting spot over productive veterans like Neal or Ryan.

* The four-man battle for starting left guard won’t be much of a battle. Rosenthal believes rookie second-round pick Luke Goedeke will succeed retired Pro Bowler Ali Marpet.

* Rosenthal has Chris Godwin starting. Now we all know Godwin is a starter and we all know it is unlikely Godwin’s knee will be ready for Week 1. So who starts in his place? Yes, Russell Gage will likely be the slot guy until Godwin returns. So who starts then? Rosenthal only states the Bucs have a deep stable of backup receivers to choose from.

* Well, hello foot-rubbing tight end Rob Gronkowski. Rosenthal says Gronk will return and resume his starting spot at tight end. Joe has fingers crossed that Rosenthal is correct on his Gronk prediction.

Enjoy today’s Ira Kaufman Podcast! The Sage of Tampa Bay sports has plenty to say after the Bucs’ first OTA practice of the year.

If Gronk doesn’t commit in the next two weeks the Bucs need to start looking for a vet TE, trade or free agency. Otton want be available for 6 to 8 weeks and hes a rookie. That leaves Brate only tight end with experience.

  2. Allbuccedup Says:

    Won’t not want.

  3. Buc92’ Says:

We’ll be fine with or without gronk, not into begging or overpaying anymore… if your in then act like it … we have a mission to complete

    GoBucs!

  4. GOB Says:

Logan Ryan has 200+ career snaps at three different positions. I think he’ll be deployed mostly at slot corner, but will probably play some safety too.
As for Gronk, he can’t and shouldn’t be depended on, even if he comes back. The bucs should’ve been more aggressive in the TE market. Last year, in the games gronk missed, bucs TEs had 10 catches on 29 targets. Brate sucks, and the rookie they drafted is a blocking/developmental pass catcher. I do believe Gronk will play, but realistically how much does he have left? Nearly every pass he catches, results in a car accident.

  5. Rod Munch Says:

If Gronk doesn’t commit by 2-weeks before the season, that’s when you start to get worried, and that’s when veteran TEs will be available via trade.

But don’t worry about it, Gronk is coming back. He even said on Brady’s Man in the Arena, he doesn’t need all the reps and offseason work, he shows up and he’s ready to play.

So calm down people, you don’t need someone RIGHT NOW. Also I’m pretty sure Brady is on top of things and knows he doesn’t came Brate blocking for him and will be making sure the Bucs have someone else in that spot should Gronk decide not to play.

  6. Rod Munch Says:

I’m still curious what happened with Scotty Miller. The vast majority of people here were much higher on him than I was, but even so, he just completely feel off the face of the earth last season. Was he injured all year, or did he just get lazy coming off his one big play @GB and let all the talk about labelling himself as the fastest player in the NFL get to his head?

Also Leftwich is an idiot that doesn’t understand what fast means vs quickness. When Miller was used last year, stupid Leftwich kept wanting him to run screen passes – and Miller stinks at running screens. Miller’s game is run in a straight line as quickly as possible, someone get that info to Leftwich.

Just dont get all the doom and gloom on godwin not being ready for start of season. he got hurt on december 19th, had succesful surgey in less then 2 weeks which showed he had no damage in any other ligaments. this puts him right around 9 months till opening day which has been the top amount of time lost in recent years. in the last 5 years most players are back in 6-8 months… i think the time frame gets altered a little by just when the season starts. cooper kupp was out 10 months.. but was he really.. he got hurt november 11th but didn’t return till opening day – thats because that was the very 1st game he could have played in. even gronk tore his acl december 9th in 2014 and practiced with the team th 1st day of training camp.

i think godwin who is a special athlete who we already know had a clean and succesful surgery for dr. andrews will be in the starting lineup opening day

  8. BillyBucco Says:

Absolutely NO WAY Godwin starts week 1.
People heal differently and have different mental hurdles.

We would be hearing a sooner timetable if he was ON PACE to play week 1 and we aren’t.

I’m hoping as much as the next person, but it isn’t REALITY.

  9. BradyBucs Says:

The fact that the Bucs haven’t made any TE moves is most likely because Gronk has already committed to return. Surely the front office knows what the situation is.

There’s a reason they drafted Hall and immediately have him JPP’s old number. They *knew* they weren’t bringing back JPP.

They *know* that Gronk is coming back.

  10. Allen Lofton Says:

    Gronk’s coming back

  11. Jeff Says:

My computer says Brady could have a big physical decline this year. Very few cream puffs on this schedule. 9 wins might be just about right.

  12. GOB Says:

Jesus mike, let’s all go rip up our ACL then. It’s a devastating injury. He won’t be nearly the same player until next year, or at best very late in the season. The quick twitch muscles surrounding the injury, don’t come back without 15-18 months of extensive rehab. They signed Gage because of that fact

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Rosenthal also has Logan Hall starting and (interestingly enough) has us with a front 6 of Hall, JTS, Vita, Shaq, White & LVD….and 3 CBs Davis, Dean & SMB

And…..stop with the mystery & worrying over Gronk…..he’s coming back or we would have traded up for Trey McBride

  14. fern Says:

Gronk will be back after doing his events

That was my thinking as well, I’ll bet Suh is in the same category

  16. alvinscissorsharper Says:

Hoping to see both Gronk and Suh back. JPP, not so much.

  17. Cobraboy Says:

There really are no “starters” in situational football.

  18. SOEbuc Says:

Bowles said in PC pretty confidently that Neal was going to be the starter at SS with the exit of Whitehead. We are so deep at safety, though. It’s gonna be a great rotation.

  19. SC Bucs Fan Says:

The Bucs know if Gronk is returning. Bank on that.

  20. SPARKY Says:

Let’s start at the bottom. Camille is only getting jobs if she’s still with Gronk. Gronk is only important if he is playing with the Bucs. Bucs only win if they have Brady .Brady only wants a super bowl. Super bowl makes Bucs nation happy. Happy makes wife horny. There is the secret to life. Let’s do it.

  21. Buccsfanchad Says:

Gronk already said he was coming back right after TB12 unretired. He said he wanted to make Tom “sweat a little bit.” Don’t remember what interview it was, but it’s on YouTube.

  23. Goatfarmer Says:

Can’t believe he didn’t name Trask as the starting QB. Just to see what he can do. Per the wishes of some cerebrally damaged specimens.

  24. Carlsbad Says:

    Bucs don’t want OJ Beckham?

  25. Hodad Says:

Logan Ryan will be competeing with SMB for the slot corner spot. He can play safety in a pinch, but I don’t think they want him to play there. Edwards should start, but I see some rotation with Neal. More pass happy teams Edwards will play more. However if you’re playing the Titans you might want Neal on the field more.

  26. David Says:

As for safety and who plays the slot, not sure, may the best man win.
As for the other outside receiver, I think Perriman will take it early and will see a lot of Grayson. I am curious to see how Johnson comes in the camp. If he is in shape and ready to go he can still be a factor.
I agree, Gronkowski will be back.

The one that has me stumped is left guard. Why are people giving up on Stinnie so quickly, or Hainsey for that matter? All the coaches rave about Hainsey at guard or center.
