A Look Back At The Trade Up For Luke Goedeke

May 18th, 2022

Bucs GM Jason Licht

General manager Jason Licht was a hungry man on Day 2 of the NFL Draft.

Joe suspects Licht put a dent in the buffet at One Buc Palace and wasn’t physically hungry, as Licht praised the spread publicly.

(Joe cannot speak to the food quality, though, as Team Glazer ordered Uber Eats as Round 2 opened. That’s a story for the eventual JoeBucsFan memoirs.)

After drafting defensive lineman Logan Hall to start Round 2, Licht later traded up with Buffalo from pick No. 60 to select at No. 57, where he selected University of Central Michigan offensive tackle Luke Goedeke.

Goedeke is transitioning to guard with the Bucs and battling for the left guard job vacated by Pro Bowler Ali Marpet.

What Licht did not do was draft Louisiana State University left guard Ed Ingram, who the Vikings grabbed two spots after Goedeke.

Joe has seen a lot of debate about Ingram’s game and his off-field issues from four years ago, and Joe is not saying Ingram should have been Licht’s pick. But it will be interesting to compare Goedeke and Ingram as their careers progress.

As the Bucs’ pick was about to be made, former Bucs GM Mark Dominik, the SiriusXM NFL Radio draft guru, suggested the Bucs should pick Georgia linebacker Nakobe Dean. He went 26 picks later to the Eagles. Dominik seemed to believe the Bucs would draft a guard at No. 57 but he didn’t put a name on it.

Alongside Dominik on the air was Pat Kirwan, the former Jets linebackers coach and personnel chief, and he did not speculate who the Bucs might grab in that slot. Kirwan and Dominik thought the Bucs could use a cornerback but neither had a corner on his board that represented good value, especially with a trade up.

Goedeke and Ingram were invited to the Senior Bowl. Goedeke didn’t get to showcase his stuff, as an early practice injury derailed him. Ingram was voted top offensive lineman on his team by defensive linemen on the opposing Senior Bowl squad.

Again, it’ll be a fun sideline for Joe to track how these guards perform, and if either hits the ground running as a rookie.

Great article! I was pushing for Ingram and he went sooner than I thought.I have a job and home stuff to take care of, so I can only do this as a hobby. But after seeing Luke’s tape, Im sure he’ll be the better pick. I trust Mr. Licht when it comes to picking linemen… (especially when I was pushing for Marpet and Wirfs)

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

With the Vikings wanting a guard and Goedeke being from Michigan, it may have spooked Licht into jumping in front of them…….he wanted Goedeke and wouldn’t chance loosing him.

If there is anyone who doesn’t trust Licht on Olinemen…….speak now…

  3. SlyPirate Says:

They should have drafted Dean. LVD has a limp. Dean is a natural heir to LVD.

  4. Ash Says:

Dean had quite a few medical concerns that dropped his stock alot

  5. MadMax Says:

    ^ 4.74 40 …. for an ILB? Pass.

  6. Pickgrin Says:

Seems pretty clear that Licht knew the Vikings were going OL with pick 59 and didn’t want to risk losing out on his intended target in that range which was obviously Goedeke…

Licht used the “free” 6th rd pick received for trading down from 27 and got his man.

You don’t get to be an all-american LB, Butcus award winner awarded to the best LB in NCAA because of a a few medical concerns and 4.74 40. This kid can flat out play and Licht should have drafted him at #33. Nokobe Dean has more upside than Logan Hall and time will tell.

  8. SKBucsFan Says:

As with all of Lichts pick…Time will tell!
I really do hope we find a few gems in this year’s class of rookies. We will need them going forward.

  9. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Should have grabbed Dean he was the heart & soul of the UGA team & would have been a natural here in Tampa & if he needed the 2022 season to get better so be it

    Happy we picked the Glass-Eater.

  11. Joe in Michigan Says:

Let me take a guess and say that Dusty Chode didn’t like the picks of Ali Marpet or Alex Cappa, either. The Bucs should’ve taken a big name, big school guy, right? You wanted a big school guy with close to the same measurables as KJ Britt? Sorry, I trust Licht and his scouts more than you.

  12. Day 1-76 Says:

People act like he is a day one starter. I’m not saying he won’t be but there were so many better options at that point in the draft. I still think the punter is the biggest waste of a draft pick. They all acted like they pulled off a coup by picking a guy who can kick a ball pretty far sometimes.

  13. Buccos Says:

I like the pick of Goedeke. It’s like the old saying. If you have 3 left guards, then you have no left guard. Licht got his man. Games are won and lost on the line of scrimmage. We needed a road grader and we got one. Well done Mr. Licht!

  14. Austin Says:

Guys, we dont need Dean, we have the best ILB duo in the league, and Id say for 2-3 more years. We dont need a backup LB in the second round

  15. Show Me the TDs Says:

Mark Dominic, “draft guru”? Hahahahaha. Good one, Joe.

Bucs “fans”: The Bucs Special Teams are HORRIBLE!!!!!
Also Bucs “fans”: A pick on a punter is a WASTED pick!!!!!

If you’re seriously that worried about a 4th Round pick, you need to get a life.

Goedeke will pair up with the rest of our line well

No matter what Joe “Stay” in Michigan says. 4th rd picks are very valuable and a punter is a wasted pick unless he is Ray Guy.

Once again, Dumbernik shows his full moron to the public.

  20. Crickett Baker Says:

After all the history of kickers for the Bucs, I am happy to see one added ANYTIME, and was super happy they kept Borregales protected all last year.

    ^^^^^^
The Bucs disagree, and the Ravens (who are also known as good drafters) took a punter before the Bucs.

  23. Tony Says:

I just wish they’d stop drafting & even signing players with a history of bad injuries. Maybe not a history of them but that have at least suffered some kind of bad injury. Like an ACL MCL knee surgery, etc. because sometimes they’re not the same afterwards. Sure I get a team will consider taking a chance but it just always seems to be the Bucs.

  24. Foreveverblue Says:

Luke Goedeke is not a sure fire starter. He will compete with Aaron Stinnie and last year’s 3rd pick Robert Hainsey. Aaron Stinnie filled in admirably for Ali Marpet when he got injured during the super bowl season. No guarantee he wins the starting position..

A good punter can give you a field position advantage in every game. That can be more valuable than a backup player on offense or defense. Makes it easier to play defense if the other team is backed up to their goal line. And keeps the field shorter for our offense to score. We needed a punter and good ones aren’t just wandering the streets. Totally worth a 4th round pick. He’s also a kickoff specialist and a holder.

  26. Foreveverblue Says:

@sasquatch – every fan knows how valuable a punter can be but to spend a 4th round draft pick on a guy who punts average 45 yards makes no sense draft wise. A punter doesn’t give you field position with every punt. We have a history for drafting kickers who don’t pan out but Jason Licht will keep drafting kickers until one is successful for him.

  27. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

The goal for draft picks is to get a player that starts in year 1 for sure, not maybe or hopefully. Bucs had a sure fire starter and impact player at 27 in Devin Lloyd and the perfect replacement for LVD and they passed for Hall who will not even play 50% of the snaps in the upcoming season.
Bucs had a chance to select All-SEC true guard Ed Ingram to replace Marpet and they passed. Very good NFL offensive lineman will tell you that switching from the right side any position to the left side is a 2 year process and even then it is a maybe. Goedeke will not start the majority of games in season 1.
When the Bucs Special Teams coach was asked about Camarda he said he liked his intangibles-REALLY-punter walks on the field and kicks and walks off the field-I do not care how fast he is or if he can catch. Ray Guy award winner Araiza was available-WASTED PICK.
Bucs draft was a C Minus at best .

According to you Scooby Wright should have been #1 overall pick a few years back.
