“He Doesn’t Have Anything On The Resumé”

February 24th, 2022

Non-believer.

The voice of NFL Network, a guy who calls Bucco Bruce Arians a friend, sounds a bit flabbergasted by the Tampa Bay quarterback situation.

Speaking on his Peacock network show this week, Rich Eisen didn’t know where to go with Arians’ recent comments that Blaine Gabbert could be the heir to the Tom Brady throne.

“He doesn’t have anything on the resumé, ok,” Eisen said of Gabbert with a hefty dose of disbelief in his voice. “You know what I’m saying, it would be a tough sell to the fan base. Hey, TB12 is gone, first one out of the box [is Blaine Gabbert].”

Eisen wondered aloud if Gabbert had done enough to make anyone think he could be the next Brad Johnson or Rich Gannon, but Eisen quickly abandoned those thoughts.

Of course, those analogies are silly. Johnson had very strong winning seasons for Minnesota and Washington before arriving in Tampa. Gannon played a lot in Kansas City before landing in Oakland. Gabbert hasn’t started a game since 2018 with the Titans.

Eisen made it very clear during his rant that he does not believe Gabbert will be the Bucs’ opening day starter this season. Joe couldn’t agree more.

I would roll with Gabbert over Teddy! although that feels like saying i would rather be punched in the face vs kicked in the nuts.

We haven’t as big a choice in this matter is a lot of you would like to believe. There are a lot of needy teams, and very few available quarterbacks

James Part ll the return. Tune in!

    @ Joe

Can you please rank the top three realistic QB prospects for the Bucs other than Gabbert/Trask?

Please keep the salary cap in mind…

  7. doolnutts Says:

DarenGibo: How, I don’t like Teddy but he’s a starter in the NFL. Gabbert is one wrong step out of the league.

  8. Hail2dabucs Says:

Gabbert can do nothing more than hold a clipboard..it’s gonna come down to 2glove teddy , Jimmy G , or some other low grade starter…ladies and gentlemen we need to finally hit a franchise QB in the draft…more than likely not this one but dammit , when can we finally do that ?

  9. DarenGibo Says:

@doolnutts are we even sure Teddy CAN throw the ball more than 12 yards downfield? I guess it shows the sad state of affairs for starting QBs if Teddy continues to be one…. at least Gabbert would know the Arians offense… now, would that translate to success?? MAYBE… but i still feel better than bringing in Teddy dump down Bridgewater. At this rate, just show us what Trask can bring!

  10. Defense Rules Says:

OR … we could all wait and see who the Bucs sign as QBs & which one floats to the top after a (presumably) fair competition this preseason.

Most of us seem to be more interested in what our roster will look like REGARDLESS of who our starting QB is. Obviously dependent on a LOT of variables, and especially salary CAP this year. Right now we’ve got 47 players on the rolls, with $6.8 mil of salary CAP space available (ranking us #20 in the NFL). BUT … that’s misleading, and quite irrelevant. Personally I’d contend that our current salary CAP situation is significantly worse than that, although we can free up quite a bit.

Of those 47 players, it includes Brady, Gronk & Suh. Brady’s retired (but we still are paying his contract, so he counts), AND Gronk & Suh are both FAs (but their 2021 contracts were structured in such a way that their contract is voidable & thus we still owe them money too). The 3 together are eating up $32.1 mil of our 2022 salary CAP space (hmmm, almost a starting QB’s cost). So we’ve REALLY only got 44 under contract to play this year.

BUT … we’ve also got 2 kickers in those 44 (Succop & Borregales). Succop counts $4.0 mil against the salary CAP; Borregales counts $705,000. Surely we’ll only carry one (my money’s on Borregales, for at least the first 4 or 5 games).

So in reality Bucs have only got 43 players under contract who MIGHT be playing for us in 2022. But if you look at the lower part of those 43 in terms of cost, and in terms of which ones were actually on our 53-man roster last season, there’s a very good chance that only 30 of those 43 will be on the Game 1 53-man roster. Cutting those Bottom-13 only saves $8.5 mil however. And oh ya, those HOLES still need to be filled.

So if I had to take a guess right now, I’d say the Bucs effectively have 30 signed AND have $18.7 mil currently available to sign the remaining 23 (that’s the $6.9 mil we currently have in salary CAP PLUS the $8.5 mil saved when the Bottom-13 don’t make the roster PLUS the potential savings of $3.3 mil if Succop is replaced by Borregales). Good news though is that only the Top-51 count for salary CAP purposes, so we’re golden.

But hey, let’s go out and sign Watson; that’ll solve everything. Especially with our 30 man Super Bowl roster.

  11. HC Grover Says:

With our genius coaching staff any quarterback will win the super bowl. Just ask them.

  12. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

All you idiots who want Watson, don’t you realize he may not be cleared to play in 2022? He could be sitting behind bars where he belongs. His nothing but a piece of sh**.

Everyone is shocked that Arains would start Gabbert. Yet Eisen didn’t offer any answers as to what the Bucs should do, did he? No, that’s not his job, like it’s not Joe’s job. Their job seems to be to cast gloom, and doom at the prospect. Luckily it’s up to Licht, and Arains who they think is the best option at QB. They know the player, the cap, and how they want to piece together the team. I’ll trust their judgement on this one. It’s above my pay grade. What I will do is give Gabbert a chance. Don’t say he’s had his chances, not with this team. Like they say in Starship Troopers. I’ll tolerate you, till I can replace you. Good luck Blaine, Buc nation is not behind you.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … And yet, still don’t have any answers. Fun game though.

  17. SC. Bucs Fan Says:

I have rarely seen hate for a player on here like the Gabbert hate. It’s Piscatrlli like.

  18. New England Patriots Fan Says:

    Marine

AR 2 1st and 45m/y cap hit with a new deal required

RW 2 1st and 45m/y cap as he requires a new deal to trade

Carr 2 1st and 40m/y and he requires a new deal to trade

Cousins 1st and he in last year if deal wants 40m/y and new deal to trade

Watson 2-3 1st and 41m/y cap hit abs suspension active legal situation

Winston FA cost 15-20m/y and have to convince him to leave Saints and dumping him for a SB, like returning to wife after an affair with super model

Wentz trade 3 round pick and pay 28m/y or let him get cut and fight over new deal with him v. Other needy teams

  19. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

According to my notes the Bucs have 24 roster holes to fill.

That is right in-line with your estimate of 30 out of 43 (54-30=24)…

LOL at – “30 man Super Bowl roster” comment.

Facts are tough sometimes. Most people don’t like to face reality.

  20. SlyPirate Says:

Most likely to be the Bucs Next QB (in order):
    1. Wentz
    2. Bridgewater
    3. Watson
    4. Mayfield
    5. Bridgewater

    Gabbert isn’t on the list.

TBBF … And yet, still don’t have any answers. Fun game though.

Having the answers would make it boring.

I do know this….our best shot at another SB was last year…..it will be a long shot this year no matter what we do.
When that’s the case, it’s usually best to make longer-term decisions.

  22. Rod Munch Says:

There is no way that Licht lets Arians pick Gabbert. This is all talk, like all the dopes in the media saying the Bucs would sign limp-armed afraid to throw the ball Teddy Bridgewater a couple of years ago, it was never going to happen, just a classic misdirection.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … ‘our best shot at another SB was last year…..it will be a long shot this year no matter what we do. When that’s the case, it’s usually best to make longer-term decisions.’

Yea verily. SB teams are not only hard to build, but they have to be quite ‘lucky’. In our case, we built a top-notch starting roster along with key rotational players, but got zapped by injuries (Godwin & Wirfs especially) AND lacked the true depth necessary to compensate in the playoffs. Rams built a very similar team, but the injury bug didn’t impact them nearly as much.

Could personally care less whether they call what we’ll be doing a rebuilding, or a reloading, or a renovation. We’ve gotta take a longer-term approach to ‘fixing’ our roster & TEAM-BUILDING just out of necessity. JL has no choice.

  24. Marine Buc Says:

    @ TBBF

    You make a valid point.

40% of the last ten SB winning QBs are named Tom Brady…

  25. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … At this point my only real hope is that we don’t do anything horrendously stupid that would take us years to recover from.

  26. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

Agreed. I appreciate the more conservative approach.

Accept our mediocre QB situation but keep a young competitive team intact, draft well and wait for our next opportunity to find our next QB…

Let the salary cap heal and hopefully we will be ready in 2024 or 2025.

  27. Buc4evr Says:

Licht is engineering a big ass trade for a quality starter, while Arians spouts misdirection BS. Typical strategy to keep other teams guessing.
