Bill Polian: Browns “Likely” To Have A New Starting Quarterback

February 24th, 2022

Baker Mayfield is available?

Now this made Joe hit the rewind button — in part because of what Hall of Fame general manager Bill Polian’s son does for a living.

Chris Polian is director of pro player personnel for the Washington Commies, following high-level gigs with the Jaguars and Colts. So while the elder Polian is semi-retired, he remains very well plugged into the NFL through his son and through many close friendships, including one with Bucco Bruce Arians.

Co-hosting on Late Hits last night on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Polian was listing the teams seeking a new starting quarterback and clearly said Cleveland likely will have one and change there is “within the realm of possibility.”

That got Joe’s attention because of the interesting connection between Arians and Baker Mayfield. The 26-year-old Browns’ QB has one season remaining on his contract for just under $19 million. Considering Arians was open about wanting to coach Mayfield in 2018, Joe is very intrigued.

Joe suspects Mayfield could be had for the Bucs’ 2021 first-round pick – No. 27 overall — and a conditional pick in 2022.

Bill Polian also said to expect his former team, the Panthers, to dive in head first to trade for Russell Wilson, if he becomes available.

I’d take Baker over Watson any day!

  2. zzbuc Says:

No thx, we already have the knowledge what a turn over machine is….

    Big pass……..

  3. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

I think of all the QB’s I’ve heard rumored, I’d take Wentz. Watson has too much baggage. Wentz’s career stats give him an upside working with Arians, plus I think he misses the vertical game in Indianapolis.

  4. Defense Rules Says:

March 16th is only 20 days away. PLEEEASE HURRY.

  5. allbuccedup Says:

No thxs hes average at best there are 2 or 3 FAs just as good.

  6. David Says:

    Bucsfanman

WHY?!?!? Baker had a Super Bowl ready team and cannot get the job done. He had a run heavy team and couldn’t get the job done. The only reason for Baker is he’s probably better than most of the free agents out there and a hell of a lot cheaper than Watson and Wilson, if they even are involved in a trade.

If you’re going strictly by Watson’s legal issues… Whatever. That’s up to the judge and the courts, not you or me.

  7. SlyPirate Says:

Baker is a real option for the Bucs. He has marketability. He sells. If he came in and won (likely with the Buc’s team) then his marketability goes through the roof.

QBs lose a ton of value once a team is committed to moving on.

Baker could be had for a 2.

  8. Ben green Says:

David is correct. If Baker couldn’t win with that group, he ain’t winning anywhere. He also has a Jimmy G type disregard for his own health. You can win some regular season games with him, he’s not terrible. He just isn’t a Superbowl caliber QB

  9. DoooshLaRue Says:

    In first 4 seasons:

    Baker
    92 TDs
    56 INTs
    8 Fumbles lost

    JayMiss
    88 TDs
    58 INT
    16 Fumbles lost

White Winston with a lesser case of fumble-itis.

  10. Ash Says:

I thought the thought process was to get someone better than Gabbert if thats who you are talking about you might as well just roll with Gabbert and not have to sacrifice anything and get the same result.

  11. Ash Says:

I thought the point was to get someone better than Gabbert if Baker is what we are down to you might as well just roll with Gabbert not sacrifice anything and get the same result

  12. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Dooosh

    Can’t argue with your take…

Statistically Baker is similar to Winston who we ran out of town…

But there is a few things I do like about him.

    – His contract is only @ $18 million.
    – He is durable – doesn’t miss many games due to injury.
    – Plays with pain. He injured his left shoulder in week #2 and played all season with a pretty painful injury.
    – He took the Browns to the playoffs and nearly beat the Chiefs in the AFC championship game in 2021.

Not really my preferred choice but rhe Bucs could do worse at QB…
I would probably rather have Baker over Gabbert but I believe our salary cap situation will help determine who our starting QB will be next season.

  13. Marine Buc Says:

*** My bad he didn’t take the Browns to the AFC championship – I meant to erase that before sending…

It was just a playoff game.

  14. iamrhenry Says:

We don’t need a Tom Brady to get back to the Super Bowl, besides there is only one TB and he’s hung up his cleats. Sign a cheap vet such as Trubisky and let him, Gabbert and Trask duke it out in training camp. We would have more money to spend on our own free agents and retain our draft picks to bolster the team. I for one am looking forward to watching the development of Trask. Ive grown weary of TB this or TB that, not that I wouldnt be all in on his return.

  15. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Marine Buc,

I’d take him over Gabbert too.

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

David- Marine Buc said it best.
As to the legal issues, I think from a PR perspective, it would be best to avoid Watson, IMO.

Frankly, I still hold that the best scenario is to keep it in-house and save the money for our big FAs, meaning Trask/Gabbert/ vet FA QB.

  17. JA Says:

    Washington Commies?
Be interesting to hear where you’re going with that?

  18. HC Grover Says:

    Nahhh.

  19. DoooshLaRue Says:

    JA,

Probably just a slam on the former Redskins for caving into the snowflakes and changing their name……. that wasn’t offending Native Americans.
    Bunch of sissies….

  20. HC Grover Says:

How about hire a bunch of em’ 10 el cheapo econoqbs and try one in every game? Walk ons welcome.

  21. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

Baker for our 1st pick. Would be okay with me. The only other QB I would consider is Derek Carr.

  22. BA4President Says:

    Joe,

Just looked at Polian’s resume, as I didn’t know he was in Carolina, and DANG! No wonder he is in the hall of fame.

The dude built amazing rosters wherever he went. I knew about his time in Indy, but he also built the early 90’s Bills and got an expansion franchise to the NFC Championship game in year 2!

He won NFL Executive of the Year six times, over 3 decades, with 3 different teams.

Has anyone else ever touched that? Is he like the GM of GMs??

  23. EEK Says:

Mayfield is a backup qb in the NFL — sadly
We have that position all set
When the first big move happens, hopefully the Bucs will be ready to secure a proper qb
This team has a playoff roster

  24. ATLBuc Says:

I would take Gabbert, Trask or Jameis over mayfield

  25. Buddy007 Says:

    Hard pass.

  26. Hodad Says:

Yeah Joe, I wanted to date this hotty in 2018, but when I saw her yesterday she gained 300 pounds, and her arm was in a sling! I wonder what Arains sees in the 2022 version of Baker? Might have changed his mind about him since 2018. Better bet is he forgot what he even said about him that long ago! Keep em coming Joe, can’t wait to see what QB conspiricy you come up with next.

  27. TBD Says:

I may be in the minority, and that is just fine.

I would absolutely be intrigued as hell to have Baker Mayfield as BUCS QB.

  28. TBD Says:

Unlike Watson… at least he is a guy we can get behind. A fighter… a scrapper… a guy who badly wants to win…. and has character.

  29. Eric Says:

Last game i saw Baker play Aikman just torched him in the telecast. Very inacurate and bad decisions with the football.

    JW would be better.

    Watson better yet.

  30. rashad brown Says:

Charlotte is not big enough for Ciara. So if Ciara doesn’t want to come to Charlotte, Russell is not going to waive his no trade clause.

  31. Rod Munch Says:

Mayfield stinks, why would anyone want a short, undersized QB who is, at best, a game manager. Currently he’s on a team with the best running game in football, a good offensive line, and he still stinks. No thanks. I’d rather have Carr, even Jimmy G, over this midget.

  32. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Come on now Fancy Man.
Did you see his turnover stats?
I know that’s gonna get you all hot and bothered.

If he could just lose more fumbles and work on his tan you’d be all over him!

  33. Buc king Says:

    Winston 2yr contract 10mil a yr

  34. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as: BringBucsBack) Says:

Well, if he came here (or simply changed reams), his current commercials would stop running, right?

  35. steele Says:

“You don’t need a Tom Brady to win another SB”. But a Tom Brady virtually guarantees that you have a shot. No other QB—not one—gets you closer.

Mayfield is undersized, streaky, unreliable and cocky. But he is no worse than the other terrible options. Just pick which style of mediocrity, pay up, and expect nothing in return.

Youth (draft) and a trade for a misunderstood young veteran (who hasn’t proven he permanently sucks) are the only ways forward.

  36. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Doosh how would someone like you know that a slur like that doesn’t offend native Americans??? It was high time for that name to be changed. If anybody is a snowflake it’s you

  37. firethecannons Says:

Trask vs Jameis no to gabbert

  38. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Check the internet DBBF99.
Most Native Americans don’t have a problem with the word. They actually described themselves as having red skins.
I also have a few NA friends that think it’s ridiculous that White Liberals we’re the ones who championed this “outrage”

    Educate……don’t hate.

    WhiteSkin out.
