The Bucs Have One QB Under Contract

January 29th, 2022

“Don’t worry Kyle, Antonio Brown is gone.”

It’s true.

When the 2022 league year kicks off in mid-March, signaling the ringing of the free agency dinner bell, the Bucs will only have one quarterback.

Joe saw that on Twitter and it looked shocking.

For the next six or seven weeks, the Bucs have under contract four quarterbacks. They would be retiring Tom Brady, Blaine Gabbert, Ryan Griffin and Kyle Trask.

Brady, of course is retiring, So scratch him off. And what about Gabbert and Griffin? Both are free agents.

So as it stands right now, Trask is Brady’s successor because the Bucs have no one else.

For now.

It would be hard for me to believe that BA (if he’s coach) doesn’t bring back Gabbert…..he may go for Bridgewater is a top QB is not available.

  2. Bucs since 76 Says:

Hopefully Trask used the time Brady was available to learn from the master.

  3. Miller5252 Says:

Trask had the greatest opportunity last year. I really hope he took advantage of it. I really don’t think he’s going to be taking over, but maybe that year behind the best gave him some growth.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Speculation is the word going forward….on just about everything except the Glazer’s ownership.

    QB, HC, OC

    Gronk (not much)
    Jensen
    Godwin
    JPP
    Suh
    Lenny
    Cappa
    Davis
    Whitehead
    OJ
    Rojo

The draft pick #27 seems quite immaterial at this point.

  5. Z28 Says:

Gabbert and Griffin are trash. Let’s go get Russell Wilson

  6. Smashsquatch Says:

Roll with Trask and bring in a competent vet backup. Not many other options as the cap is going to restrict what Licht can do. Brady leaves Bucs with $32m in dead cap space, and it was well worth it!

  7. Bucs Orlando Says:

Sell whatever you have too so we can get Asron Rodgers and Danvante Adams.

Brady plus Gronk free 20 million plus 9 million for cap extention, means we would need to sign Aaron to a long spread out contract qnd find some cash for Adams.

A man can dream can’t he.

  8. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I think it’s gotta be Trask. Why else would you draft him? Licht and Arians and possibly Brady all approved. I liked the pick at the time. But if they just go after the next bandaid vet then the pick makes no sense. I’d say maybe bring in some competition if it’s out there but this is where Licht and BA can really mark their legacy. Or else ppl will just say it was all Brady. And it wasn’t.

  9. JimmyJack Says:

I like the option of going cheap at QB this year. Clear up dead CAPS and get in position to make a big move for a QB next year.

Even better if you find a cheap option for QB that you love you are in a great position.

  10. JimmyJack Says:

BigPappa that is true but the Bucs have also spent a entire year evaluating Trask. For all we know they dont trust the guy to handle this offense……..or you could say the opposite.

  11. A Real American Says:

    Oh No!! We suck again!

  12. Hodad Says:

So as many have suggested, Trask wasn’t a wasted pick after all. Fact is, he’d be the first QB off the board in this years draft. We got him last pick in the 2nd round, not bad JL. BA steps aside, BL takes over we keep more of our staff together, and give Trask the best chance to succeed, with the best coaches. Arains alone can’t get the best out of Kyle from his golf cart. Without Tom, BA would really have to put in the time. He ain’t coming back either chief. VP of opperations sounds like it fits BA better than HC.

Sooo… Schefter just quoted Brady’s agent saying he hasn’t confirmed retirement yet?

    WTH is going on here?

  14. Beeej Says:

At this moment in time Gabbert is a far better QB than Trask

  15. SB Says:

Trask Never had an elite starting QB to learn from thru HS and College he was behind mediocre QBs. Yet, when he finally got the starting Nod he almost won the Heisman. I just BET if he gets quality reps with the #1s he surprises alot of people! Setting SEC records is not an easy task, but it was for Trask

LOL so funny when people state suppositions as fact. I mean, AS IF you have ANY clue! Sorry I forgot you must be a Bucs assistant who watched the two every day, My bad.

  17. Rod Munch Says:

Honestly, looking at the numbers, I think the Bucs are best to just go ahead and blow up the team.

Put Trask in as your starter, play for the #1 overall pick, and go ahead and jettison all the vets who won’t be helping us in 2 years.

That was always the deal with Brady, that once we left, it’s cap hell and rebuilding time, and I was perfectly fine with that then, and I’m consistent and understand that was the deal with the devil that we made.

It will suck for a while, maybe for a long while, but we got a SB out of it, and really, what else can you ask for? It was a great 2-year run. Now we reboot.

If you want to make another run this year, one more time, there’s only one name that makes any sense. Jameis Winston. You will only have about $10-million to get a QB if you want to keep Godwin and Jensen, and Winston is the only guy giving you production in that range. Anyone that says Bridgewater, please, kindly, go jump head first off the Skyway.

You’re right, but the difference is going 4-13 vs 3-14.

Play Trask because there is at least a chance of an upside, and if not, you’re at least playing for the top pick.

  19. A Real American Says:

Agreed Rod, blow up the team.
Formula from last to years absolutely will not work without Brady

    *two

I’ll believe it when I hear it from Brady.

its not dead cap space when someone retires

Yes, it is dead space if you owe them guaranteed money, and the Bucs owe a lot of guaranteed money. It’s how you got everyone back last offseason. Not only that, Brady will be on the books with void years until 2025 (at $8m/year).

  24. HC Grover Says:

Prepare to watch the carnage next year as the Ariens/Gabbert calamity hits the Bucs. It is gonna be UGLY!

  25. Buczilla Says:

This could be a win win situation. If Trask sucks then we’ll most likely have a bad record and be in line to draft someone like Bryce Young in 2023. If Trask is good, then that’s freaking awesome for us. If he’s a lot of both like Winston was, then I hope that we would have learned our lesson and pull the plug on Trask very quickly.
