Easing Up Odell Beckham Chatter

March 8th, 2021

Reaching.

Some people are doing major hopscotch to make a case for the Bucs acquiring mercurial Browns receiver Odell Beckham.

This morning on BSPN’s “Stay in Bed” — Joe may have to change the name of that show given how much football content is surfacing from the program — someone decided to take two words from Adam Schefter out of an entire conversation, and place them on Twitter claiming the Bucs are eager to get Beckham.

And once something is on Twitter, away we go!

Inserted into a large discussion of the job status of Beckham in Cleveland, “Stay in Bed” co-host Mike Greenberg said he is constantly getting feedback that a team to look out for if the Browns cut or trade Beckham is the Bucs. So Greenberg asked Schefter about the chances of Beckham playing for the Bucs and park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, Bucs Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.

Remember: The vast majority of the chatter you hear/see on BSPN live hollering shows is pre-programmed, meaning it is heavily scripted beforehand. This is partly because producers must know what graphics and highlights to use. Disney’s heavy-handed corporate oversight of content is also a factor.

Below is the full conversation of Schefter and Greenberg concerning Beckham and the Bucs, if Chris Godwin bolts the team:

Mike Greenberg: Super quickly Schefty, if Chris Godwin ends up leaving Tampa, a lot of people keep sending me notes reminding me that there is a good relationship Tom Brady and Odell Beckham. Now there are a lot of things that have to happen between now and then. Godwin could get franchised, all this stuff could happen. But if Godwin leaves should we be looking at Tampa as a possible spot for Odell?

Adam Schefter: Greenie, we could bring up a lot of options here. The fact of the matter is, in a way to me, this is fantasy football. The cap is going down. It’s going to be about $181 million dollars. Teams are going to have to make hard financial decisions. And while Tampa Bay and Tom Brady might want Odell Beckham, Jr. there, can they fit in his contract? Can they make that work? And I guess you can always make do with whatever you want, but I think it is challenging to fit in a wide receiver at that number [Beckham’s contract] on top of everything else they are trying to get done there.

Greenberg: Alright, we will have to wait and see. It is fantasy football and it is fun to think about. One way or the other.

The two words Schefter used were “might want.” So that’s a major, major reach to conclude the Bucs would go after Beckham.

Now does Joe think there is interest? Maybe. Depends how much power the Bucs give Brady as part of his new contract.

Also, Joe is not discounting how Jeff Darlington, also of BSPN, first floated this idea of Beckham and the Bucs. Remember, Darlington has an in with Brady’s camp and Darlington was the first TV insider last year to suggest Brady coming to the Bucs was not drunken barroom banter and wishful thinking.

Joe just cannot imagine Beckham being on the same roster as furniture-tossing, bicycle-throwing Bucs receiver Antonio Brown. Talk about combustible material! Joe has a hunch if that happens, the Bucs would rue the day they let Godwin go.

Of course, from a drama standpoint, the thought of Beckham and Brown paired is absolutely delicious! How cool would it be after a bad loss, for example, to have Beckham and Brown take fans’ minds off the score by throwing down on the sidelines?

That would be awesome!

You can watch the full exchange of Greenberg and Schefter talking Beckham and the Bucs at the 10:28 mark of this video.

I will be disappointed if Odell comes to Tampa.

  2. windbaggery Says:

This is the dumbest phouecking idea I have ever heard. Pay Godwin or franchise him and quit the idiot talk.

  3. Bucfan81 Says:

No one in Tampa wants the Injury prone Odell Beckham especially at 18 million dollars. Screw that the only money that needs to be spent is bringing back this Defense. You know the only defense that has ever stopped Patrick Mahomes from scoring a TD.

  4. Bucs Guy Says:

No thank you. Too many injuries, too much money, too little production and too much unfulfilled potential.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Naaah!!!,Nyet!!!,Non!!!,Nein!!!,Nej!!! or if you want Italian….it’s No,….Mexican,…it’s No.

  6. windbaggery Says:

Isn’t he kind of a pain in the a$$ too?

  7. John Says:

Godwin>Beckham. Ab>Beckham. Landry would be the one I’d want.

  8. SB Says:

    Hard hard hard pass

  9. Winny Testaverde Says:

OBJ…a handful of highlight reel plays…including an iconic one hander…don’t make up for his price tag or me first attitude quite honestly.

  10. zzbuc Says:

OBJ for CG would be the stupid thing on earth…….I don´t think that will happenn by any means….

  11. AJ Says:

Desean Jackson Deaux??? Thanks but no thanks!

Want to keep Godwin as much as the next guy. But I think plan B is on the roster already in Tyler Johnson. He likes to block and is a great route runner. And we know he got hands..

  12. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

Really crappy in the locker room as well.

  13. PSL Bob Says:

Jeez, let it lie already. We don’t need another receiver. Perhaps a RB that can reliably catch the ball, but other than that, we don’t need another top flight receiver. The crew we’ve got can get it done, with or without Godwin.

  14. David Says:

A lot of hypothetical nonsense to justify jobs. If they could afford to sign OBJ, they’re are 10 times better off signing Godwin.

Forget all the free agents and rumors… Sign back as many of your own players that you possibly can and draft well

  15. Swampbuc Says:

    Ain’t happening in any universe.

  16. Topdoggie Says:

At 18 million we most likely lose Gidwin and Barret. The idea would be to get someone with talent fir 7 or 8 million and keep our other free agents. Hell tag and trade Godwin. Spend the money on Barret then trade Godwin fir a first rounder and draft a receiver. Why isn’t tag and trade anywhere in the conversation.
Or two first round picks for Evans and presto money for all free agents and the ability to reload at QB when Brady retires. Godwin is at the beginning of his career and Mike us 3/4 thru. It would suck but it would give us the best chance for a repeat and then not having to rebuild with 32 and 32 picks two years in a row.

  17. Cobraboy Says:

Pre-FA is as bad as the pre-draft: nothing but a bunch of Liar’s Poker being played.

Teams play it for the draft, agents play it for FA.

Don’t believe squat until it actually happens…

  18. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Although the thought of Evan’s, Brown & Beckham is intriguing, unlike how Brady harnesses Brown, doubt Beckham can keep his mouth shut. NO THANKS!!

  19. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

No way do we want Beckham on this team. No WAY!

  20. BuccaneerButters Says:

I was skeptical of Brown being on the team, but Brady has helped reel him in. Honestly the only issue I have with OBJ is his antics, and injuries. So if Brady can keep OBJ in check, it might work. I’d rather keep Godwin tho. I have only heard good things about OBJ as a person from teammates and the like. Just his whole kicking net and the dog peeing thing was ridiculous.

  21. cmurda Says:

Pay Godwin and stop this Tom Foolery talk. Long term extension for #14.

  22. SOEbuc Says:

Total assh0le. No cry babies in Brady’s locker room.

  23. SOEbuc Says:

Leave Shaq. Give Chris a four year deal. TJ is CG 2.0. Would be two very good young WR for our offense down the road. Tom said Chris has some of the best hands he’s played with. How can you let walk away?!

  24. TiredBucsFan Says:

    No OBJ!
