The Bucs & Carlos Dunlap

March 8th, 2021

What a great example of a quality pass rusher hitting the market and potentially being a one-year signing to bolster a Super Bowl defense.

Today the Seahawks cut edge rusher Carlos Dunlap, who just turned 32 years old. Dunlap is a two-time Pro Bowler and managed 18 QB hits and six sacks last season despite bouncing between two teams.

More important, after being traded to Seattle from Cincinnati at last year’s trade deadline, Dunlap got a lot of credit for helping turn around the Seahawks’ defense.

The former Florida Gators star is as durable as anyone and maybe, just maybe, he’d be eager to ring-chase in Tampa for a year before the salary cap jumps in 2022.

If Shaq Barrett wants to leave for ungodly money in free agency, Joe would be a lot less jittery if Dunlap was brought in to replace Shaq for, say, $8 million plus incentives.

Always a guy a followed a little and have liked.

Seems like a possible plan although I am a Shaq fan 1st.

  2. Adrnagy Says:

There you go , a lot of options besides a 8 sack a yr guy in shaq that wants $20M yr.

  3. Bucs Guy Says:

    Like this as plan B.

  4. Rick Says:

if Shaq is worth $18M then what’s Vita Vea worth? Vita Vea comes back and opens things up as the others arent being doubled teamed.

  5. DoooshLaRue Says:

The only thing scaring me is the fact that he’s got Bengal’s blood in him.

We had a lot of turds from that team…. remember?

  6. SlyPirate Says:

The Bucs are starting to pick up guys I wanted a decade ago — Suh and JPP.

I remember wanting Dunlap in Round 2. Everyone thought he was going in Round 1. Looking back the Bucs took Brian Price and Arelius Benn?

  7. Casual Observer Says:

    Good plan.

  8. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Listen up savants. Rework Marpet and Brady. Gholston and Brate are gone. Tag Shaq. Cya Godwin and Fournette. Sign everybody else on D. Sign FREAKING JAMES WHITE IMMEDIATELY. Draft wisely. 2 rings in a row is then within reach.

  9. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

100% if you could get him or Vonn Miller for $8 mill that would be perfect and let shaq get his $16 mil elsewhere and thanks shaq for the playoff run

  10. Beeej Says:

Gonna be a nightmare even Vea and some of the other’s rookie contracts end

  11. Chris Thomas from Heaven Says:

Gerald McCoy is begging to be signed by Bucs right now on SiriusXM NFL radio right now at 2:47 pm

  12. adam from ny Says:

we should pay shaq 5 mil a year for just the way he talks…

no one in the world talks like shaq…

very interesting style of speak and delivery…second to none

also 5 mil for his little pot belly 🙂

and that can all be briefcase money at dennys…

so then sign him for 10 mil a year for 4 years on the books…

  13. Adrnagy Says:

    No to James white.
Sign adrian Peterson or mark Ingram.

  14. Bucfan81 Says:

For the price of Shaq we could probably get Suh back and Dunlap and maybe even Lavonte David back.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

    One hope Barret reads JBF.

    His price would go down.

  16. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Adrnagy I think its cool whatever you say I’m almost 100% against

  17. Adrnagy Says:

    scbucfan,
It’s nice to hear someone in here is not sensitive/takes it personal of others opinion.

But yeah. I’ve never read a post from you , i tell you already you’re wrong about any of the moves you want Bucs to do.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There is always something or someone out there that is too expensive…….this year, it may be Shaq……& Joe, this time it will be for a very good reason.

  19. Youngbucs Says:

Joe I agree with this smart thinking.

  20. Adrnagy Says:

    Pat OConnor resign. Good.

  21. pewter941 Says:

I would say Joe Haeg is gone, he was a liability at times. that should save us a chunk of cap room, keep Stinnie and Capp instead.

  22. Drunkinybor Says:

I’m scared of any DE from Cincy ever since we signed The Ghost what a terrible player he turned out to be.

  23. PSL Bob Says:

Shaq aint going anywhere! That dude’s gonna be chasin’ QBs in a Bucs uniform for years to come.

  24. Bird Says:

    Pewter 941

I saw talk of bringing dotson back on the cheap for the Haeg role. He is like 35 or something so shouod be veteran minimum And he would simply take haegs spot as the swing tackle /6 lineman for running. Bucs actually did pretty well in this formation

Dotson was better with the run block

  25. David Says:

Shaq is four years younger and better. I am all for Shaq but he could be a good stopgap for a year or two if needed

  26. SOEbuc Says:

    Rick

“if Shaq is worth $18M then what’s Vita Vea worth? Vita Vea comes back and opens things up as the others arent being doubled teamed.”

A LOT more than Shaq. That’s why this resign is a very bad idea.

All these people realize that giving Shaq $80M 4 year deal will certainly interfere with resigning our young superstars such as Vea, White, Wirfs and all the other talent drafted in the past four years. This is what champion teams look like. Especially Brady’s. Young talent and a bunch of solid, cheaper vets spread across the board. It’s WIN NOW 2.0 in 2021 and what FA wouldn’t want to be with the Bucs if they come calling.

    Build through the draft.

  27. Winny Testaverde Says:

Bringing McCoy back now that The Bucs are fully legit would be like getting back together with a high maintenance girlfriend you wasted tons of your own time and money on due to your one time low self esteem. Don’t do it Licht…he’s not worthy. His other quad will snap like his second bicep did anyhow.

  28. buxsxntkt Says:

Can sign McCoy to veteran minimum if Nunez Roches bolts !

  29. Darin Says:

Thank goodness you’re not the gm. 32 year olds coming off 6 sack seasons who are looking to ring chase dont get near 8 mil. There’ll be better options than him if u wana go to 8 mil. No state tax and a boy named Brady. Shaq or godwin or whoever leave for the money there will be plenty of others lining up to play for the title.

  30. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Winny Teste

I can agree with you on that.
    McCoy sucks….and he’s not Durable.
    😀

  31. Leighroy Says:

I’ll second SC Bucs Fan. 8 sacks a year huh… Adrnagy implies annual performance but only cites 1 year’s regular season. Conveniently forgets the postseason or 2019 apparently. And why sign Tom Brady’s preferred catching RB from the last 5 years (receiving RB being a glaring need) when you could have your choice of over the hill one trick ponies who were never known for their pass catching?

  32. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

No to James White sign Peterson? Why? Bucs have Rojo as the power runner White is a phenomenal receiver out of the backfield and great after the catch. As far as Shaq, so the consensus is 1/2 the sacks for 1/2 the money?

  33. westernbuc Says:

A lot of good players are going to be available. I’d love to get everyone back, but there’s nothing wrong with letting guys walk for more money. Kwon Alexander has been on two teams since leaving the Bucs and is about to get cut. We drafted Devin White. It worked out for us. The veterans that will be available around the league are going to be really talented.

  34. ModHairKen Says:

The only problem is he’ll get drunk before a really important game and blow it for everyone.

  35. SOEbuc Says:

Why are all these fans jumping on to get a RB so badly like we didn’t just win a Super Bowl without a receiver at RB. Vaughn has decent hands, very powerful up the middle and wouldn’t have to worry about anyone catching him if he busts out for 98 yards. This team doesn’t need to spend money where it’s not needed.

  36. DaBux Says:

This plan B is much better than the insanity of GMC coming back.

  37. Brandon Says:

You want a base DE In a 4-3 to play OLB in a 3-4? Dunlap might be more likely to play Gholston’s position and Will move further inside to replace Suh.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

As a guy that signs on the very very cheap if we resign Shaq, sure. As a replacement? No way. JPP is already that age and breaking down, you can’t have two guys like that, not that Dunlap was ever as good as JPP (although he was very good, JPP was just a tier higher).

  39. Alaskabuc Says:

Rather see us pursue Hendrickson if we can’t keep Shaq.

  40. geno711 Says:

    @RodMunch.
I agree that defensive ends are breaking down typically past 30.
So Dunlap would be a concern.

Other than JPP not being able to play after his non displaced fracture of a neck spinal bone, what makes you see his play is breaking down on the field?

I certainly did not see that.

At the end of 2019 and the end of 2020 he was better at the end of each year – not worse. Also, he plays more snaps than most defensive front guys in the NFL.

  41. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

James White scored 20 points in SB LI and should have been the MVP. The chemistry with Brady is huge. Vaughn will NEVER have the hands that James White has. Sure our offense was plenty good last year , but if there was one area we could have been much improved , it was balls caught out of the backfield. Bucs may drop a little after Godwin departs , but if you sign White it will still be a net plus for your offense.

  42. TOM Says:

If Shaq prices himself out of Tampa Dunlop would be worth considering. Lots of very good FA’s out there so Shaq, CG & LVD should beware.

  43. Ben Says:

Solves the issue of lacking edge rushers for 1 year. At some point they will need to overpay bc you can’t always be successful in draft. Why not with one of your own that has proven they can win and come through in big games. Shaq is a priority. The player they should be looking at from the Seahawks is KJ Wright if LVD leaves. More affordable and was part of a solid defense for years.

  44. Rod Munch Says:

Not sure I’m giving a 32-year old Dunlap $10m, not sure anyone is. If he was more like $6-7m with incentives, then maybe, but man, with old JPP and old Dunlap, the Bucs would really really be pushing their luck.

With that said Dunlap had 5 sacks for the Seahawks last year in just 8 games, only 6 of those starts as he learned a new system, so that is pretty productive.

I think there’s going to be some better players out there than what is expected.

In any case, if the Bucs want to keep Shaq, they can – you can manipulate the cap however you want if you’re willing to mortgage the future, and the Bucs should be doing that right now. I don’t care if in 3 years the team is in “cap hell” – so what – use the next 3 years and try to win another one.
