Week 2 For Fast Start, Philosophy Shift

January 3rd, 2021

High-five to beloved Bucco Bruce Arians for being flexible and forward-thinking.

For the second consecutive game, the Bucs won the coin toss and opted to receive. That represented a change; Arians was always a defer kind of guy and wanted the ball to start the second half.

Considering Arians said on SiriusXM NFL Radio last week that defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is the best in the NFL at second-half adjustments, it sure smelled like a no-brainer for the Bucs to opt for the football to start games, especially considering they have a high-octane offense. But that is not what was happening previously.

Now it appears the Bucs will play to their strengths.

The fast start issues? They appear to have evaporated after two strong openings to games in row.

The Bucs did not punt today, which may be the best indication of how/why the Falcons endured their worst defensive showing of the season.

  1. Bird Says:

In his last 21 drives, Tom Brady has led the Bucs to 14 touchdowns and four field goals.

    Not to shabby
    🐐

  2. Sourbob Says:

Could be the key to faster starts ?

  3. Rod Munch Says:

I prefer to defer in Madden, it doesn’t stop me from putting up 90 points.

  4. Leighroy Says:

Splitting hairs, but the Bucs did post a donut in the 3rd quarter. They allowed the Falcons to score on the opening drive of 2nd half, threw that INT and allowed another field goal after. It was 23-10 at half time, then 23-20 after all that.

So fast starts aren’t a panacea if you let the other squad back into the game later. But thankfully the goat closed it out in the 4th!

  5. richbucsfan Says:

Hmmm, 90 points should make you NFL head coach material. Lots of openings these days.

  6. 68%fraud Says:

What? The Bucs frequently received the ball first this year and did nothing with the first drive.

  7. alton green Says:

i can think of at least 1 more opening. Todd Bowles

  8. Rod Munch Says:

richbucsfan – I know, right! In any case I can call a game as good as anyone in the NFL. Run up the middle on first down. Throw short on 2nd down. Throw deep on 3rd down. Heck, that is Leftwich’s gameplan from week 1 to week 12, and it only took me 15 seconds to think it up!

  9. ElioT Says:

    @Rod

About the Madden thing… Laugh my *** off! Me too bro!

  10. 40TDs Says:

    Check your sheet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone seen Realisto or his puppy??????????????????????

    Playoffs BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Joe in Michigan Says:

A lot of good things, but if we’re splitting hairs…Does “empty backfield” work very often? The play today, no RB back there, rusher/blitzer comes in unblocked for the sack.

  12. Joe in Michigan Says:

40TDs: Playoffs, and the trolls came up missing!! Win/Win!!

  13. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Everything in my brain tells me defer, but with this defense, I guess I understand what BA is doing.

  14. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Yes, trolls are gone. They are under bridges and in the pen with sheep!

  15. 40TDs Says:

    Yeah Joe!!!!

    Win/Win!!!!

  16. Rod Munch Says:

NFL Redzone is so worth the money, if any of you cheapskates skip on it, you’re nuts.

  17. BucEmUp Says:

Notice more short passes, getting the ball out quick early in the games.

    Notice more play action

Notice more blitzing with tighter coverage

Notice more passing plays on first down and runs on second, rather than the ever predictable run on first, run on second and throw on third.

Lots of changes made and kudos to the staff for making the adjusments. Now lets see it against a playoff team other than the giants or redskins.

  18. Jason Says:

So weenie armed Brady couldn’t even get to 5000 yards for the season?
    Totally washed up. Smh

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’ve been an advocate of play action on 1st downs……it certainly seemed we did that today to great success…..Brady was also sharper early for a change…..

  20. Curse of Gruden Says:

I just read on JoeJagsFan that @rod is now the favorite to be the Jags next HC!
    Good luck Mr. Munch.

  21. TheBradyBunch Says:

I was at the game and didn’t have the luxury of multiple replays but it certainly appeared that int for Brady was a horrible call. Was there any talk about it on TV. Was it actually a pick?

  22. David Says:

They have not abandoned the run lately and they have used more play action. It’s a simple as that.

And let’s give some kudos to the O line, they have been outstanding

  23. BuccoDav Says:

    @The BradyBunch… an obvious pick…

  24. David Says:

We also need to give some kudos to the defense.

The Falcons got back into it because they were a couple mistakes on offense in a couple of mistakes on defense.

But… when you were missing your best cornerback and your best linebacker and your best pass rusher … that’s a tall order, and they played great.
A lot of guys got some work heading into the playoffs when they might be called upon

  25. Bucfanforever Says:

BradyBunch – yeah, the ball looked to bounce off miller’s arm which was on the ground, up to the falcon. The ball didn’t hit the ground. It was just unfortunate.

  26. Rod Munch Says:

4th and 12, Glennon throws a 6 yard pass. Most Glennon/Derrick Carr thing ever.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

TheBradyBunch – yeah, I’m with everyone else, it looked like a legit INT. Stupid Scotty knocked the ball straight in the air, didn’t appear to hit the ground.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

The following playoff matchups are set…

    Bears vs Saints
    Rams vs Seahawks

I really wanted the Rams to play the Saints since I think they could beat them. Not sure about the Bears, they might give the Saints a hard time with their defense, but I can’t forsee Mitch doing anything against that Saints defense.

Rams have a legit shot to beat the Seahawks, if they did, that would mean not going to Lambo if the Bucs – instead going to NO.

    Ugh.

Pulling hard for the stupid Bears and Rams.

  29. Beeej Says:

If you believe your defense can force a 3 and out, you defer. Clearly, BA doesn’t believe they can

  30. geno711 Says:

    What an upgrade!

Wirfs with 3 penalties and 1 sack allowed for the season.
    As a rookie.

Did he play every snap too?

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Does anyone know if this is the first time we have posted 40 plus point games as a franchise?

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    40 back to back games….that is…..

  33. Bird Says:

    Tampabaybucfan

Their average score was over 30 per/game for season
    1st time in history
    Another buc record this year

  34. Rod Munch Says:

Eagles playing a Bowles-like soft defense and the Redskins are cutting through them like butter…

I hope Bowles brings some pressure and doesn’t just sit back and let Alex Smith carve them up like he’s Drew Brees.

  35. Bird Says:

Pretty upsetting that none of major sport news even mention mike evans 7 seasons of 1000

The rookie from minnesota is even mentioned for randy moss rookie record

    Pathetic. No love for ME13

  36. Rod Munch Says:

The Glazers need to petition the NFL to move the game to Tampa – having no crowd really kills the TV experience and that TV money is what matters most to the NFL.

  37. LVMYBUCS Says:

Guys who do I root for to win the WFT or Philly? Who do the Bucs have a better chance to beat NY or WFT?

  38. Tony Says:

I would have rather played the cowboys or giants come on eagles !!

  39. Chris Boyd Says:

honestly, with the way our defense played today, im a little nervous about this washington team with smith at qb

  40. Rod Munch Says:

LVMYBUCS – Redskins have a better defense and a better offense, compared to the Giants. So ideally we’d want the Eagles to win, but that looks like it might be asking too much.

  41. Rod Munch Says:

Chris Boyd – That’s why I was hoping the Cowboys would get in. Our defense isn’t stopping anyone, so take the matchup with the worst defense.

  42. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Don’t really matter! They will know soon and start preparing to Win !
It occurred to me that were are missing 2 first round draft picks… and we are going to play next weekend in the first step towards the Super Bowl!

  43. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There is no doubt that Washington is a better team than the Giants……but they should be beatable……if we can’t, we don’t deserve to move on.

  44. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Joe in Michigan: I agree. The empty backfield doesn’t work often, and often leads to no yards or a sack. It’s too obvious. Leave a RB in.

  45. Rod Munch Says:

They just showed the Bucs will play primetime on Saturday.

  46. Rod Munch Says:

The team has been awful in primetime, but this is where Brady will earn his money.

  47. Jerry Says:

    Saturday 8:30p

  48. Chris Says:

Well at least the weather might be better in Washington the New York I definitely wanted them to play Dallas but they drop the ball LOL

  49. Chris Says:

I would have much rather than had gotten to play Dallas and the Dome but if Washington wins maybe the weather will be better than in New York with the Giants

  50. Rod Munch Says:

Well, it looks like if you have a mobile QB you can get negate some of the pressure of this Redskins defense…

  51. Chris Says:

Two innocent comments and can’t even clear moderation I don’t understand it’s the first time I’ve ever tried on this website and I read it all the time love Joebucsfan.com

  52. Bandwagon fan Says:

I doubt that Brady is bad in prime times. You don’t win 6 rings if you can’t handle the spotlight. If the Washington Team could be that scary with a record of 6-9, then a team with a record of 11-5 should be in trouble. I wonder what the NY or Washington write about playing the Bucs.

  53. Chris Says:

Love this website, and reading the comments

  54. unbelievable Says:

I’ve been saying all week the Giants are the easiest out.

But I think we can take WFT too.

Frankly, facing a strong defense would be good for us to deal with before having to possibly face GB, NO, SEA or LAR

  55. Chris Says:

I wonder who we would face if we win the first round. hopefully if New Orleans wins the 1st round they will have to play Green Bay

  56. Rod Munch Says:

Chris – moderation on this website is weird, like for example if you say the full name of J Watson, you get moderated. It’s all automated and it’s sort of a game to figure out what gets censored and what doesn’t.

  57. Rod Munch Says:

Wow, my comment about being moderated went into moderation. LOL!

  58. Chris Says:

Well I don’t know why I guess it was glitching a little bit, but all my comments eventually appeared lol thanks for the reply Rod
