Mike Evans Makes NFL History

January 3rd, 2021

Bucs WR Mike Evans.

A boatload of elite wide receivers have played during the NFL’s 101-year history. Joe doesn’t need to recite the names. They are legends.

Well, Bucs receiver Mike Evans is now a legend, too.  Someday he will have his name up on the Ring of Honor.

Evans, just completing his seventh regular season, did something today no NFL receiver has ever done. Evans is the first player to have 1,000-yards receiving in each of his first seven seasons, breaking Randy Moss’ record at six.

Of course, Evans was tied with Moss entering this year. And he finished with 70 catches and a Bucs record 13 touchdown receptions.

For Bucs fans, at least this week, today’s pounding of the Dixie Chicks will be more remembered for Evans getting hurt just moments after breaking the record. We should find out sometime Monday about Evans’ status.

Bucs fans have witnessed to one of the best careers any NFL player has ever had. Evans, from the moment he first stepped onto the field formerly known as the “Den of Depression,” has been nothing less than a stud.

As Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians said after the game, Evans is special.

Yo and a loser cries about pushing off. It’s a shame some people up here actually think we should trade him. Mike is our G O A T hope he’s better in 2 weeks, he won’t be playing next week

  11. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Moss…a noted Buc killer…declaring he was better than Rice a few weeks ago. Not so much…

  12. mark2001 Says:

lurker… frustrated Falcon fan? Mike doesn’t give anymore than he gets.

  13. Colonel_mp Says:

Retire the name already. Games to keep using it is bull spit.

  14. PSK Bucs Fan Says:

So is it really retiring a name when you use it as the stadium formerly known as………? Seems half arsed to me Joe! Lose the name! I mean never use it again, none of tis formerly known as BS.

  15. Rod Munch Says:

Randy Moss is the best WR to ever play the game. I saw all of his career and most of Rice’s career, and it’s not even close. Moss is worlds better than anyone else – and he was literally the only guy who that all-time great Bucs defenses could not stop. They’d have double covered and have Lynch go up and knock his head off and the f-er would still just jump over everyone and catch the ball. Rice was obviously very very good, and the stickem he’d use on his gloves made him even better, but he was no Randy Moss.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

With that said about Moss, going back to Mike, beating out Moss for any record is a huge achievement on Evans march to the HOF.

  17. Bucsjunkie Says:

    Agreed PSK!

Proud of Mike Evans the football player.

    Prouder of Mike the Man!

  20. Howard Cosell Says:

    ME13 made Johnny Manziel famous.
Winston got 5 years because he was throwing to Evans.

Brady came to Tampa to finally give Mike a legitimate QB

  21. Infomeplease Says:

Congrats Mike!!!!!!!! Thank you for signing with the Bucs. You’ve given us fans a whole lot of highlights!!

You know you’re not done yet… You’re just getting started!!

  22. rrsrq Says:

Just think about it, Lovie Smith made sure Mike got his 1000 before pulling him out and tanking for Jameis in the Saints game (full circle for ME)

  23. JustBucNwin Says:

Congrats Mike! You have not only solidified yourself as the best receiver to wear pewter, but you are making a case and adding to the resume as a future HOF’er!!

  24. ElioT Says:

Mike “Godzilla” Evans is a grown a** man. He’s got very little diva about him and I’m so proud of how he’s matured as a player and a man.

I’m really grateful to have this MAN as the best Bucs WR ever.

Get better soon Big Mike, thank you for how you handle yourself and what a great influence you are to so many young men.

    #godzilla

  25. Buc_The_World Says:

@lurker why don’t you push yourself off of this website?

  26. ModHairKen Says:

Mike Evans is a very good player, and a great teammate and husband and father. The Tampa community is fortunate to have him. Find a way to make him a Buc for life.

  27. ModHairKen Says:

Munch, how many rings did Moss win? Zero. Rice? Yeah. So that’s that.

  28. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

lurker, why don’t you lurk somewhere else. You’ve probably been arrested for loitering and prowling a bunch.

  29. AMI_Chris Says:

The NFL should restrict game play on grass fields in the 48 hours prior to an NFL game.

  30. Gettinthebucs Says:

And it looks like he’ll get a super bowl ring this year too😀.

  31. mark2001 Says:

Munch… Moss had a huge weakness. He would get hit a few times early in a game and he would do a disappearing act. He would be looking over his shoulder the rest of the game. He might be the most talented of the bunch, I grant you. But for toughness and heart, there were many with much more than Moss, Mike Evans among them.

  32. BuccoDav Says:

Munch, you obviously didn’t see enough of Jerry Rice to appreciate how good he really was. Moss flashed now and again but Rice did everything that was asked of him. He never took a play off (Moss admits he did). Rice blocked when asked. Plus, he played before the snowflake era when you couldn’t touch a receiver.

  33. David Says:

Love Mike Evans, a no-nonsense, non-diva, get the job done receiver. It’s hard to believe back in year 2 he had a lot of drops and a lot of PI’s against him.
He fixed that and has not looked back.
    Greatest Buc WR ever
Man I hope his leg is OK!

  34. David Says:

    Munch…
sorry dude, you couldn’t be more wrong. Terrell Owens and Randy moss and Larry Fitzgerald may be right up there in the top five but they are all way behind Jerry Rice.

Jerry Rice is the greatest football player to ever play the game. Not just receiver, football player.

Moss was phenomenal, But second place to Jerry Rice is like second place to Wayne Gretzky, you are not even in the same ballpark

  35. DaBux Says:

    Stud. Period. Make it 8.

  36. Brian Cawood Says:

    WARRIOR!

  37. Rod Munch Says:

BuccoDav – Nope, I didn’t miss anything, and yes, Moss, even taking plays off, was still the best WR ever. He literally was unstoppable. It’s no diss on Rice, I’m saying he’s the 2nd best WR ever, but there is a big gulf between the two.

David – Mentioning TO in the same breath as Moss makes me throw up in my mouth. TO was easy to shutdown, just watch the 2002 Bucs defense totally destroy him in that playoff game. Ronde owned him. It didn’t matter how we played Moss he was unstoppable. Those Bucs defenses were the best passing defenses in the history of the NFL and there was only one player who was unstoppable.

  38. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Rod

Agree with your assessment of Moss as the GOAT.

ME13 will need a few more awesome seasons to get in that conversation…BUT..
he’s not out of it if he can stay healthy, and he’s more than just statistics.

I like the tone of Joe’s piece because of all the positions in football that are filled with prima donnas it’s WR. We are blessed to have ME13…who welcomed Godwin into the fold and this year didn’t beotch about signing AB which now is looking like a stroke of genius.

ME is more than stats and talent…he is class. His earlier weakness of letting jackarses get under his skin seems to finally be subsiding.

  39. BuccoDav Says:

    Rod Munch…
I guess we will have to agree that you are wrong…
Rice had a longer career and better stats, more playoff appearances, more Super Bowl wins. Plus, he was an infinitely better team player.

  40. bojim Says:

Yay Mike. Get well soon. We’ll need in the Super owl!

  41. bojim Says:

    B

  42. Rod Munch Says:

BuccoDav – WRs are judged by playoff appearances and SB wins? Since when? I’m talking about on the field, one on one, or two on one or three on one, he could not be stopped. You had to get to the QB to him, that was the only way to get it done.

Yes, Moss was a much better team player, but I’m talking about greatest WR ever, not greatest teammate ever.

But in any case you’re free to disagree. There’s many people who don’t like Moss on a personal level so they will just always hate him – sort of like Warren Sapp.

  43. Rod Munch Says:

*Rice was a much better team player, obvious mistake on my behalf if my comment comes out of moderation.

  44. mark2001 Says:

St. Pete…all Mike needed was to be playing with a QB and coach that were solid professionals. Koetter was a poor HC. And you can imagine the frustration the O and the D had with 50/50 QB, whose stats would have even been worse without two all pro receivers that could win 50/50 balls.

A talented young guy playing with a knuckleheads HC and QB? Who wouldn’t get frustrated and feel they were on an island, rather than part of a good team, in that situation?

  45. gotbbucs Says:

Come a long way since KY hands, huh Joe?

You won’t live that stupid moniker down easily.

Evans is incredible. His back story is incredible. His play on the field is incredible. By all accounts, his actions off the field are incredible too.

  46. Oneilbucs Says:

Happy for Mike Evans he should be a bucs for life !!!

  47. geno711 Says:

Stroud tweeted that the MRI results are back and no structural damage to Mike Evans Knee.

  48. Ed Says:

Mike is class and a fierce competitor. When healthy he is one of the best ever. I have noticed that he has had a history of non contact injuries. I think his body type is very strong upper body and hands but not so in his legs and hips. The training staff have to work with him increasing more strength and flexibility in his lower body to prolong his career. Every time he gets off of the turf he looks like he could be hurt.

  49. lurker Says:

    Lol
Whatever morons. He pushes off every time and cries.
    You disagree, that’s fine.

  50. unbelievable Says:

Straight up stud and all around good guy / teammate.

Super happy he got that. Not so happy about his injury.

It also appears Joe did not retire the moniker for Ray Jay as he promised he would. Lol.

  51. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Big Mike!!! Proud to have him as a Buc! Definitely a role model for all young Bucs, and looking forward to seeing him in the playoffs! Go Bucs! It’s time to shine!

  52. D-Rome Says:

I said it last week and I’ll say it again: The Glazer family should put Mike Evans’ name in the Ring of Honor right now. He’s the greatest offensive player in team history. Why wait?
