Jason Licht Shares A Tom Brady Memory

December 27th, 2020

Bucs GM Jason Licht gets in the face of Team Glazer during the pre-mask era.

What a day this must be for Bucs general manager Jason Licht.

When he took the Tampa Bay job, he didn’t draw up a seven-year plan to make the postseason — no GM does — but look at him now. Take a bow, Mr. Licht.

As Joe wrote yesterday, Joe considers the Bucs’ success this season to be evidence that Licht has matured as a GM and is simply better than he used to be. And yes, Jameis haters, the Bucs’ 10-5 record is about a lot more than getting the human turnover machine out of town.

Yesterday, Licht was talking before the Bucs game on the team radio broadcast about his favorite Tom Brady memory. Remember, Licht was a former honcho with the Belicheats, hired and re-hired again by one of the greatest football minds in history.

Licht served up three memories: one of being there for Brady’s first-ever game in Detroit, winning the Super Bowl during the 2001 season and how Brady interacted with Licht before the QB was an iconic superstar. “I always liked how after games he would come up to me, ‘Great job today.'”

Gushing about Brady’s infectious aura also was on the docket for Licht. “He’s one of types of competitors that has ice in his veins.”

Licht went on to compare Jason Pierre-Paul to Brady, “he’ll do it missing fingers and [with] a broken neck.” Of course, Licht was the guy who thieved JPP from the Giants for a third-round pick just prior to the 2017 NFL Draft.

Joe is so fired up with Bucs love and happiness today. It’s fun being a cheerleader — when there’s something to really cheer about.

Must give kudos to Licht this year.

    Job well done.

  2. Howard Cosell Says:

Biggest game of the season so far on Sunday. If the Bucs win:
    * It will be best record since Gruden went 12-4
    * The “Den of Depression” moniker will be dropped (allegedly)

Joe, assuming the Bucs win: What will be the new nickname for RJS?

  3. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Howard

How about home of the Super Bowl Champs? Of course gotta earn it first.

  4. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

    Tompa Stadium

  5. Howard Cosell Says:

At this point the new nickname should include “Brady” or “Tom” in it

  6. Howard Cosell Says:

LOL….NRINB beat Howard to the punch! Awesome

    Jmark

I hear yah. Bit atlanta is a good team. But they cant finish is their problem

  11. Buczilla Says:

Awesome stuff. With the year that we’ve had, having our team in a position to kick a$$ in the playoffs is something a lot of folks will appreciate for a long time, myself included.

  12. Bird Says:

Look at phillip rivers stats as we were looking at him.

Less yards and 22 tds and 9 ints. Not terrible at all with low picks but
    Brady was right move.

  13. BigPoppaBuc Says:

He absolutely nailed the Wirfs pick. That pick has put us in position to win this year. That and the development of Capps have been key to the balance on offense this season. He had to swallow some failure for sure. VH3, TWO kickers and of course Winston. But he’s actually hit more than he’s missed in the draft (Godwin, Marpet, White) and the deals for JPP, Shaq and Brady have helped this franchise turn a corner. His next challenge is to draft replacements for those key vets. I’ve always liked Licht, and it’s good to see him overcome some mistakes and get this team to the post season.

Toms place, has a nice ring to it,

Don’t get the Winston haters comment Joe??? For 5 years he gave the ball away over and over again. Last weeks pod cast, I think, it was brought up again how every team going into the playoffs year after year don’t have the turnovers. Winston was a bad pick on and off the field, but at the time they really didn’t have a good pick at QB between him and Mariota. 5000 yards didn’t get them even sniffing the post season and the consistent pics killed the D and the O never could overcome them. I am interested seeing if Payton can change anything for him. I hate Payton, but he’s a heck of a coach.

What irks me is that damn matt gay is money now with the rams. Wtf

  17. Jason Says:

Temple Of Manliness Best Reality All Damn Year!

  18. Jimbo Says:

This GM drafted a place kicker at # 2 who was a terrible bust. No. 2 nonetheless! That was a dumb, dumd move that would have gotten most GMs fired anywhere except with the bucs. A couple of years he wasted a draft pick on another kicker who couldn’t kick. Amazing

  19. Ed Kerber Says:

No longer the “New Sombrero” or “The Den of Depression.”. How about “the house that Tom rebuilt?”

  20. Fan from above Says:

Licht is very lucky to have a job

  21. JimbobBucsFan Says:

I am so happy that the Glazers have learned their lessons.  A new coach every two or three years is not the answer.  A new GM every four or five years is not the answer either. Find what you think is the right man for the job of GM and be patient.  I am proud of our ownership now.

I have enjoyed watching Jason Licht grow and mature as a general manager.  I have shared many of the criticisms of him along the way.  But what do I know?  I can only generalize and watch from the outside like just about everyone else.  Our present and our future appear unlimited.  We have come a long way. I am proud of this franchise now.

The Bucs have been disappointed this time of year for so many years it is hard for Bucs fans to cheer about our making the playoffs. With Brady knowing how to win in the playoffs it is now possible to dream about the Bucs getting to the Super Bowl in Tampa. Yeah!!!
