Bruce Arians Advises Todd Bowles & Byron Leftwich Not To Take Certain Head Coaching Jobs

December 27th, 2020

Joe and every other Buccaneers fan is in win-now mode. But Bucco Bruce Arians isn’t afraid to talk about 2021.

The Tampa Bay head coach believes he’s got excellent head-coach material on his staff. When Arians got the job, he was clear that assistant head coach Harold Goodwin, special teams chief Keith Armstrong, offensive coordinator Bryon Leftwich and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles are in that class.

Now, there are rumblings about Bowles getting strong consideration for a top job next season, and Leftwich’s name has been tossed around.

Arians addressed this on SiriusXM NFL Radio last week, publicly sharing insight on how he would counsel them if they get a call for interviews.

“I’m wishing both those guys get an opportunity and, you know, I’ll be all for it,” Arians said of Bowles and Leftwich.

“If I’m either one of those guys, I would counsel them, ‘Don’t take a job without the GM interviewing you. Don’t take a job and get a GM later.'”

The Lions and Falcons fired their head coaches and general managers this season. The Texans are in the same boat but have an interim GM.

The NFL changed the hiring rules last week; candidates can now interview before their current team (if they have a current team) finishes its season. Of course, candidates in that situation would be interviewed virtually. So, for example, Bowles wouldn’t be permitted to fly to Detroit for a Friday grilling.

Arians said he’s not concerned about Bowles or Leftwich getting distracted from their coaching duties if they got a call during the season. Joe disagrees — because they’re human.

Maybe teams that need a coach should fly to the candidate and not have Bowles or whoever flying anywhere with a playoff game days away.

  2. MadMax Says:

just watch the pitt game….things are lining up

  3. Arians should retire Says:

I for one hope we keep Coach Bowles and make him our head coach.

  4. Swampbuc Says:

Speaking of Jax, I am watching Dare Ogunbowale tearing it up for the Jags. I liked him. Don’t miss him but glad he’s doing well.

  5. Anonymous Says:

I don’t think that will be an issue

  6. crazybucs_CL Says:

let them go…. you too. Bucs in the playoffs nothing to do with coaches….if it was for them, we should be 5-10.
the success is because of GREAT TB12, and the other talents we have:ME,CG,JPP,Garett…..

  8. Jimmy Says:

LOL Leftwich. If some team is dumb enough to hire him he better jump at the chance and sign the contract before the owner sobers up Yeah, even the Jets.

  12. Buczilla Says:

Bowles and Leftwich are solid coaches at worst, but we have had enough putrid games this year that I wouldn’t cry if either of them left.

  13. Joe Says:

    No, @ ILLINOIS
    FIGHTING ILLINI

Did Bret Bielema get fired already??? LOL

  14. The Red Mirage Says:

I don’t think any of the coaches are going anywhere this season. Next year is a different story depending upon how much success we have.

  15. SOEbuc Says:

Lmao. Byron? Negative. For Bucs HC. Bowels bombed in NYJ but I also cannot remember the last time that team went to the playoffs. Bowels continue to work with the young defense will get better in time as HC. I would dump Byron and find a better OC. I wouldn’t mind taking a look at QB coach Clyde Christiansen for OC.

  16. BucEmUp Says:

I would like to see bowles stay, but I would donate my left testicle if it guaranteed getting a better playcaller.

  17. MadMax Says:

Go Colts….Go Jets…Go falcons….until that last game brothers!

  18. BucEmUp Says:

SOE Bowles had zero talent to work with across the board and the team gave him no.money to spend on roster.

  19. Pick6 Says:

The HC job here is Bowles’ to lose after Bruce calls it a career. He should only entertain offers where he feels very good about the ownership (a known quantity for him here) and the team is at least as well set up talent and cap-wise as the Bucs are. I’d be wary of Byron, he is still figuring himself out as a play caller and OC…I’d almost welcome Leftwich getting lured away, we might get Arians back as a play caller

  20. MadMax Says:

I dont think Trevor is declaring (i have some Clemson connections around here)…we need to wait on him and trade the farm for that spot in 2022….Get Baby Gronk from Penn St. with our first….too much $ tied up at the TE position….let em go…then maybe QB in the 2nd to learn behind Brady…i dont know who yet…still researching.

  21. MadMax Says:

And yeah, Bowles will shine here…Jets organization is a mess….but lets keep it all together for now….we’re getting there

  22. Bucs could have been the Lions Says:

Why does “Joe” edit out comments he doesn’t like? What is he afraid of? Thin skin. Basically a p*ssy. Hundreds of comments a day are automatically eliminated for foul language, hate speech, all kinds of things. Joe never sees them. –Joe

  23. richbucsfan Says:

Who would want Detroit, Texans, or ATL? Career killers

  24. ModHairKen Says:

    Everyone always has “connections.”

  25. Clean House Says:

Haha, slow down on these guys.

  26. Tye Says:

Bowels has already failed at HC…. Some are just great coordinators and that’s it…
Leftwich hasn’t stood out in any way among his peers…
Whoever replaces Arians needs to be a winner and not of the mediocre stock the last several HCs have been keeping the Bucs out of the playoffs a decade plus!

  27. Davenport Says:

Dont take certain jobs???? They will be lucky to be interviewed and, if they do, it will be because of their skin tone.

These two are not HC material

  28. Oxycondoms Says:

Is bucs vs nfc east a formality with a bucs win over atl? Seems like the rams remaining games can throw in a curveball on who bucs play

  29. El Buco Realisto Says:

Ole stale biscuit should tell them to get any Coordinator position for next let alone a pipe Dr eam such as head coaching jig!!!!!!!!!!!! Ole stale biscuit and friend will be exposed in the one and done playoffs, but will be brought back because of low standard sheep in Tampa!!!!!!!!!!!! Next year will be a total failure and the rats will be jumping ship mid-season, players will tell the truth about inept and disconnected coaches which the sheep will be shocked to hear!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

No one is hiring BL as a head coach. Cmon

  31. Rod Munch Says:

What a boost it would be for the Bucs if Arians was forced into doing the play calling. You’d think it would mean less first down runs up the middle and less predictability. It will be funny to watch a team get Leftwich thinking they’re getting a high flying offense, only for it to turn out he’s an ultra conservative head coach who has an offense ranked in the late 20s. Overall I’m not worried in the least about losing him, unless it drives BA to retire, then it’s an issue as I don’t want Bowles as head coach either.

  32. MadMax Says:

one and done? why even post here ya big dummy? realist the real hater, thats why. Did you lose some money on a gamble and cant let it go….well im still counting on my ben to bring me 1100…theres my pocket change gamble…but i dont care if i lose it, all good, just play money, and i wont hate on our team like you.

  33. Glenn Williams Says:

I would also be concerned that it’ll become a distraction to the players. For example, when Monte Kiffen was approached to be a coordinator with his son Lane Killin and he accepted it. Our defense took a nose dive. Their hearts wasn’t there anymore and was never the same. He accepted the job December 2008 and left 2009. We finished with 9-7 and Gruden was fired. We never really recovered till now. To be honest, I still haven’t gotten over that and I blame Monte and Lane for poor timing. We needed that last game to get in the playoffs. That’s water under the bridge. GO BUCS!

  34. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

If any other team wants Leftover Sandwich as a Head Coach, be my guest. If he gets a gig, I hope he can take the Realist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with him.

  35. Anonymous Says:

Prayers going out for both Bowls and Leftwich. And if Byron leaves the Glaziers should make BA call plays or he can leave as well.

I would take Josh McDaniels as head coach and Matt Patricia is defensive coordinator over that garbage staff we have right now.

Like Bill Belichick can you NE, BA and the Buc’s wouldn’t even be in the playoffs without Tom Brady.

  36. SufferingSince76 Says:

Realist, I never knew it was possible for the written word to sound just like a very loose breaking of wind, but you succeed every time.

  37. Miller5252 Says:

Isn’t the new rules that if they do take HC job the Bucs end up getting 3rd round pick per coach?

  38. Patrick Says:

Or at least don’t do what Monte Kiffin did and announce you took a different job before the season is over, then the team goes mental and collapses

  39. D1 Says:

    Miller,

I’m going to guess you’re joking!

On the off chance that you are not, the answer is no. The team that hires a minority candidate recieves the pick.

  40. Pewter Power Says:

Bowles has been there before so he gets it. Leftwich is the amateur and would take any head coaching offer that came his way but he has no offense he’s always run someone else scheme and not qualified whatsoever to be a head coach, he’s barely competent running this offense with Tom Brady under center

  41. mark2001 Says:

Alterered. Illinois hired the former Wisconsin coach/ Arkansas coach, Bielema, if I remember correctly.

  42. IrishMist Says:

Is there any rule against making Brady OC while he still plays QB? We could pay him an above average salary as OC while keeping his cap hit down with a lower player salary. That way we could keep more of our quality vets.

  43. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Patrick

Neither one of those two has near the Gravitas of Monte…

They shouldn’t let the door hit em where the good Lord split em.

  44. Mr no rings Says:

I wouldn’t worry about any team trying to get Leftwich. Nobody else is that stupid. I think we’re stuck with him.

  45. Gettinthebucs Says:

If bowles knows what’s good for him he’ll stick around another year if Brady and arians are back. I expect next year’s draft to be BPA heavy up front DL/OL. Whichever position is rated higher. The young secondary should be better next year. Especially with playoff experience under their belt and maybe a vet corner added (Pat P?). I can see Leftwitch taking the jags job. Its a better roster than people think and they are loaded with draft picks.

  46. Miller5252 Says:

D1, had to go look it up. It was voted in to get more minority coaches in the league. If teams that had minority coaches picked for head coaching jobs or GM’s that they would get a 3rd round comp pick if they lose 2 it would be 3 3rd round picks. So unless I’m reading it wrong it was voted in. I would put the link but I’m sure the comment would get booted.

  47. Jmarkbuc Says:

Leftfoot can’t run an offense… Why would anybody hire him to run a team?

That being said, somebody take him please.

  48. MadMax Says:

@Mod, i know my people but think what you want…Clemson and Seneca is right down the road from me, trust me, he’s not declaring…youll see…2022 is when we need to be going after him.

  49. Hodad Says:

If they get H.C. jobs good for them, but probably bad for the team that hires them. Lefty won’t get a job for the same reason the O.C. of K.C. hasn’t. The reason is they’re running their bosses offence. It’s hard to tell how good they are because their H.C.’s are very involved in the offensive scheme. Bowles bombed in N.Y., and his quiet demeaner might turn off a lot of excec’s. I doubt either of them will get a job, but will be interviewed to satisfy the Rooney rule.

  50. Reach87 Says:

Some folks are hilarious. Everything in front of you says we have a pretty good offense and yet you deride the OC, like YOU know better. Like the Glazers should have hired YOU. Fact is the team (team game-coaches and players included) has the #7 offense in the league, has a top 10 rusher (imagine), has won 10 (hopefully 11) games, and made the playoffs for the first time in what…13 years? For you to say they “…can’t run an offense” is amusing. Go Bucs!

  51. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

Leftwich a HC! Ha ha ha! He’s a poor man’s Raheem Morris. Keep him around as Brady’s puppet for one more year and fire him.

  52. Swanee22 Says:

Leftwich is to young and the consistent timing of play calling is not successful. Tom Brady took over calling plays in second half of Atlanta game. This is evidence of of the tension between HC and OC when the teams offense was extremely inconsistent and the Buccaneers lost 3 of 4. Tom Brady will continue to call the Offensive plays with visible discussion from Leftwich. It was evident of Brady’s Offensive mind and BA and BL needs to continue to set aside their own egos and personal goals as they have in the last 5 quarters played. Head coaches should not take to much credit for winning or to much for losing. Tom Brady is unique and the offense he sees in his mind, can’t be matched by a leftwich or a Arians. A Super Bowl winning coach once said “Coaches have to watch for what they don’t want to see and listen to what they don’t want to hear”. Brady calling the plays and making final decision Bucs will have victory over Atlanta and will win playoff game 1.

  53. Eric Brierton Says:

Yeah brady definitely needs to do the play calling…we need more creativity and more running the ball…we have the RBs to run wich ooens up the box for passing and keeos opponents d on thier toes ..there has to be an balanced attack..well beat ATl and im saying were going to the SB!!! Coaches need to remember take away opponents strengths capitalize on their weaknesses also always have different gane pland to make adjustments..were looking good at the right time GO BUCS and illtake any bet were not 1 and done well be in the SB
