Take A Bow, Jason Licht!

December 26th, 2020

Bucs GM Jason Licht

Joe has hurled all kinds of daggers at Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht over the years because he deserved them.

When your team’s record through five seasons is worse than your 28-52 predecessor, what else is a Bucs fan to say?

But Licht persevered after captaining the second half of The Lost Decade . And today, in his seventh season, Licht has stepped out of the darkness and into the light of success — and hopefully fully clothed into his South Tampa pool tonight.

Look at the offensive line Licht built, along with the best run defense in the NFL and a pass rush that’s no longer a laughingstock. It’s said the you win in the trenches, and Licht’s done a very solid job there.

If not for Licht, there’s no Bucco Bruce Arians in Tampa. That’s the stone cold fact and no Bucs fan should forget it.

And without Arians, there’s no Tom Brady.

Let that triangle sink in for a moment.

Licht is not going to win the NFL Executive of the Year award this season, but he deserves the 2020 vote of Bucs fans.

Take your anguish and your years of pain and Bucs suffering and flush it down the damn toilet tonight. Yeah, maybe they’ll float back to the top of the bowl next month, but that’s ok.

Joe assumes Licht has matured a lot as a GM. The Bucs’ moves reflect that and Joe expects Licht will continue to grow from here.

The last couple of years he’s had have been really good to great. He deserved all the kicks he got with all the failed pics, FA and the crappy coaching staffs. Not sure if it’s him or Arians on building this team…. but he deserves a lot of praise here for where the Bucs are

  2. Wesley Says:

Licht is still a buffoon, don’t be fooled by Arians influence.

  3. Ed Says:

What is the most impressive was bringing in all the free agents-

    Brady
    Gronkowski
    ABrown
    JPP
    Suh

Without these acquisitions Bucs wouldn’t be where they are today

  4. Mr no rings Says:

EASY now…. if we go one and done we’re still a joke. Let’s wait and see.

  5. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

He deserves a lot of credit/accolades. Weathered quite a shat storm…

  6. geno711 Says:

Licht hits this year that made a difference:

    Brady
    Wirfs
    JPP
    Winfield
    Gronkowski
    Suh
Not panicking to Bucs fans suggesting that running back was priority.
Letting Perriman and Carl Nassib go elsewhere.
Not panicking about Donovan Smith or Alex Cappa.
Not panicking about getting a better QB behind Brady.

  7. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

Today we celebrate being in the playoffs. Next week….

TOMPA STADIUM will replace The Den of Depression!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. JimmyJack Says:

The soon as Bruce walked through the door J. Licht became an instant elite GM!! The Bucs are now a contender. Bottom Line matters.

  9. Leighroy Says:

Wesley, how can you seriously say that? It’s not Arians scouting department who hit left and right in the draft this year, or who took a flyer on Shaq or acquired JPP, or drafted Mike Evans, Marpet, Cappa and VV, found Cameron Brate and plenty of other shrewd moves as he found his footing with a competent coaching staff.

Kickers and by extension the 2nd round (before this year) may be his main blemishes, plus Jameis Winston. But it was either him or Mariota that year and they both turned out sour.

No GM is perfect, but Licht has turned this franchise around and in turn his career.

  10. Buczilla Says:

Licht has made some boneheaded mistakes in the past, but he has been on a tear lately.

  11. westernbuc Says:

He’s lucky that Tom Brady wanted to stay on the east coast

  12. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Amen!, Amen! Amen! … Joe! 😎🤩😂😜

  13. BradyBucs Says:

Just think how much better this Defense would be if Vea didn’t get hurt.

Is there any outside chance Vea can be back for the playoffs?

  14. Rod Munch Says:

This team needs to win in the playoffs for him to get any accolades – this team wasn’t put together to go one and out. Wait on celebrating.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Gotta give the man credit when it’s due…..it’s next year that will be difficult trying to keep the nucleus of this team together……starting with”

    Godwin, LVD, Suh…..

Looks like we had an excellent draft with Wirfs, Winfield, Vaughn & Johnson…..
    C. Davis……Vea….& Rojo, Miller were good picks…….along with Whitehead….
    Dean, SMB, Edwards….Jury still out.

  16. james west Says:

    CONGATULATIONS JASON LICHT, LFG BUCS

  17. B Says:

All good points Joe, but I am one step below you- cuz he didn’t do anything about getting any veteran secondary and that is what is going to kill us

  18. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Licht has done a much better job the last couple of years. However, the Glaziers have hung onto him for a very long time. Hopefully, their loyalty will be rewarded this year.

  19. Jeagan1999 Says:

I’ve been critical of Licht at times, but I take my hat off to him…..the last few drafts and free agency signings have been top notch!

    Well done Jason!

Is he going to jump in his pool when he gets home?

  21. Jmarkbuc Says:

    EZ people ….

Making the playoffs is great but ease up on the irrational exuberance.

    TB would tell you that.

  22. orlbucfan Says:

It’s about time the dimwitted Licht hating yahoos backed off. Licht has shown his talent chops for years starting with the draft and UFAs. The Bucs have the most talented roster in all 3 parts of the team since their inception. Special Team needs a little more work but all our kickers are spot on. Hey Joes: did LVD dance off the field when he knew Bucs are playoff bound? He had his usual solid game today.

  23. gotbbucs Says:

For much of Licht’s tenure the talent on the field underperformed. Much of that underperformance I believe falls in the coaching staffs that have been here. He’s obviously had some head scratching moments, but by and large, he’s had more hits than misses.
Today was a good day, but it was also against a Detroit Lions team that gave up five weeks ago.
I still don’t trust this coaching staff in big games. Arians has a history of letting big games get away from him. Here’s hoping the Brady effect can trump the Arians look of bewilderment when the sh!t hits the fan in the playoffs.

  24. BringBucsBack Says:

Sorry, I suffered too much woeful GMing while Licht was at the helm for me to worship at his alter of AC/DC. Without going into every decision he effected, his draft record (especially early picks) prior to this coaching staff was abismal. His best picks prior to this coaching staff, were no-brainers that fell into his lap: ME, Jameis, VV, CG. Agouyo was the worst draft pick EVER! The players he’s brought in through the fortuitous results of knowing BA who brings Tom, who brings Gronk, AB, Forenette, Suh again etc. shouldn’t be credited to any decision that he’s made, should it?

    Let’s win something, first.

  25. Cometowin2 Says:

This year’s draft with Wirfs, Winfield, Johnson and Vaughn is showing great promise. Wirfs and Winfield will be all rookie. Johnson and Vaughn will contribute more in the future.

Well done Jason. You’ve made mistakes but you’ve learned and you’re now an excellent GM!

  26. Issac haggins Says:

If he can shown consistent hands Vaughn may be one of his best picks . This could turn out to be a great pick👍🏻
