Marpet Is Out

November 22nd, 2020

Monday night status.

Yesterday Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians held out hope.

Arians thought, perhaps with a symptom-free practice on Saturday night at the Glazer Shed, Bucs starting left guard Ali Marpet would come out of concussion protocol and play Monday night.

That’s not going to happen, per Jenna Laine of ESPN. Marpet is still having issues.

Bucs left guard Ali Marpet has officially been downgraded to ‘out’ for Monday Night Football. Marpet (concussion) was doubtful yesterday after missing Friday’s practice and was able to do some things last night, but he’s still experiencing symptoms.

This is starting to concern Joe. Notice former Bucs guard and current popular local sports radio personality Ian Beckles said he’s beginning to worry about Marpet because it is not often you see an offensive lineman miss multiple games with a concussion issue unless there is something worse lurking.

Monday night will be the third-straight game Marpet is unable to go after a concussion.

I’m worried too. He’s way too young to mess his life up.

  2. Leighroy Says:

This sucks, but you have to play it safe for the long run. We need Marpet in December and January more so than Monday.

Somehow Jensen, Shipley and Cappa are going to have to contain Aaron Donald. I’m both optimistic and skeptical all at the same time.

It is frightening. I read one CTE study that showed it’s not really the big knockout blows that necessarily do all the damage…sometimes yes…but scientists now believe repetitive blows to the brain, not as significant as those KO hits, as in the kind absorbed by offensive linemen…repeated blows to the head throughout the game.

Remember the guy we signed who had the concussion history,..his name escapes me but he was an OL who never really got to contribute.

I think Ali may be done for the year….and then first and foremost I worry for his health as bojim says…but of course he’s our best OL hate to lose him.

  4. Mitch Says:

@Stpete are you thinking of Arron Sears? He was a second round draft pick in 2007. I have read he can no longer take care of himself and is a resident at a assisted living facility.

Not sure Marpet is there, but most concussions heal in 4-6 weeks (80% at least). If he continues to experience symptoms past that time-frame he experienced something a bit more complex, and could be re-classified as a brain injury.

  5. Defense Rules Says:

StPete & Mitch … It was DT Mitch Unrein who we signed from Chicago in 2018 and never played a game for us because he couldn’t clear concussion protocol. He hasn’t played since, but don’t know if there’s been any lingering concussion effects or if he just decided to hang it up as a precaution.

Looking back at the 2015-2020 injury reports on PFR, doesn’t look like Marpet has missed any games as a result of past concussions. And it was promising that he made it back earlier this week to practice, even though he had a rough go of it that last day. Bucs don’t need to rush him back; nor should they. Ali needs to get to 100% before he jumps into the fire again. Lots of players can play through pain, but you don’t play around when it comes to your brain. Life’s too short.

    Mitch

I Think SPBF is referring to a DL we signed from the Bears a couple years ago.. I don’t think Sears played enough to get a concussion. He had some mental health issues when he got here, if I’m not mistaken.

  7. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Well on the positive side his other lingering injuries are getting extra healing.. wishing the kid the best.. the other positive thing is that in 2020 the doctors don’t clear them from concussion protocol until they are clear.. back in the day you were good to go when the smelling salts cleared your nostrils. I’ve been unconscious briefly 3-4 times, you really don’t remember how long

  8. Mitch Says:

Ah, thank you both Defense Rules and Jmarkbuc. I completely forgot about Unrein. I remembered Arron because his parents sued the Bucs for allegedly hiding information related to his head injuries as a pro.

  9. knucknbuc Says:

remember the guy we signed last year that never got a snap for the bucs from chicago @joe. I think his name was unrein or something. hopefully alis isnt that bad.

  10. stpetebucsfan Says:

What Mitch just said. Yeah it was Sears.

  11. stpetebucsfan Says:

Oops…looking to much at the NO/ATL game…I meant Unrein as DR said.

  12. crazybucs_CL Says:

mild injury takes 7-10 days to recover….. this is NOT good new for him.
Keep him out…. it may be very serious….
I hope he got nothing in long time…good player, great man.

  13. NaplesBucsFan Says:

NEWS FLASH: Saints are a better team than the Bucs(and most other teams)…doesn’t matter who they have a QB, they always find a way to make plays. Oh and they have a good defense. Without substantial improvement, no way the Bucs get past the Saints in the playoffs…assuming they make the playoffs. Got 3 tough teams ahead. Keeping it real…

  14. NaplesBucsFan Says:

    Correction, 2 teams not 3

  15. RealBiucFan Says:

Looking at the rest of the remaining games there is no challenge. Bucs are running the table. The Saints game will be their lost loss this year.

  16. Cobraboy Says:

Not good at all. Concern for his future as a player.

  17. Bucfan81 Says:

Damn is Marpet career done. We might be seeing him retire and us drafting his replacement.

  18. TheBradyBunch Says:

RealBucFan you don’t think the SB champion Chiefs will be a challenge???

  19. RealBiucFan Says:

Not at all The Bucs are vastly superior in every category.

  20. RealBiucFan Says:

Chiefs struggled to beat Carolina at home. The Bucs destroyed Carolina twice. Bucs would beat the Chiefs by 20+ points. The Bucs are the new Patriot’s now. The Bucs will own the next decade of football.

  21. Moore$$$ Says:

And then again….none of you dolts are qualified to change your own oil much less speak intelligently on brain injuries. Especially that blowhard st pete. Sometimes people just go a little off the rails and has nothing to do with brain injuries. Sometimes people don’t smoke and get lung cancer.

  22. adam from ny Says:

yeah 3 games is getting a bit weird…

does anyone remember any specific play that might have caused this?…

i do not recall a stoppage in play a few games back where marpet was having an issue, or escorted to the sideline tent for a check up and some fondling

  23. firethecannons Says:

he needs an mri of the head already at the least it would give him confidence that it wasn’t a brain bleed

  24. Snook Says:

I’ll be shocked if we see Marpet again this season. This is very bad news for him.

  25. orlbucfan Says:

Buc Luck rears its ugly head yet again. Please get well young man. You have a whole life ahead of you.
