Snippets From Practice

August 18th, 2020

Yes, Joe was out at practice today. And yes Joe took notes.

However, Joe wants to caution readers. Without getting too detailed, there are restrictions this year for reporters due to The Sickness. One is, once you receive your parking spot of sorts to watch practice, that’s where you stand the rest of practice.

As you can see in the picture below, it’s not always a good angle. And when the Bucs did change sides of the field, moving closer to observe, the Bucs had players lining up on the goal line sort of like a human wall (Dirk Koetter was notorious for this). So to say Joe had an obstructed view of practice is being way polite.

Joe is not complaining one iota. Just letting readers know why this practice report, at least for this morning, is short.

* The first thing that pops in Joe’s mind the first time watching park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady is precision. The guy is just so damn accurate. And he can rifle a pass on a rope or he can softly lob a pass to a receiver.

And damn the man throws a pretty pass.

There were two passes Brady threw to the left side about 15 yards downfield during quarterback-receiver drills, Brady absolutely put the ball on the receivers’ hands at belt level. They didn’t break stride, the receivers. It almost looked like centerfielders making basket catches.

Joe thinks he saw two of Brady’s passes hit the ground and because of being screened, Joe couldn’t tell if it was a pass breakup, the receiver dropped the ball or it was an errant pass.

* Though Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians didn’t think the defense was getting the better of the offense, the defense looked damn good to Joe. Especially against the run. Once, Brady handed off to Ronald Jones who tried to run around right end. Fuhgettaboutit. RoJo was smothered by a gang tackle.

Later, RoJo tried to run between Ali Marpet and Ryan Jensen and got nowhere, until the defense let RoJo go after the whistle blew and RoJo then took the ball to the house.

* Though the Bucs were in pads, there was not much hitting. In other words, the Bucs were not at full-throttle. Arians doesn’t like to see his players beat up on one another so that is likely why the hitting seemed somewhat tame.

Some other highlights:

* Rookie Ke’Shawn Vaughn gets loose up the middle and does a Doug Martin (continues to run upfield despite the whistle being blown, biting the football).

* Brady fires a quick strike to the right sideline (Joe wasn’t able to see who the receiver was) but he is met by Bucs defensive backs immediately.

* Brady is a lot more nimble than Joe ever thought he was. Now Arians is not having Brady run options or anything like that, but Brady bounces around the pocket a lot better than Joe would have guessed. Maybe he wasn’t allowed to do this in New England, thus why this surprises Joe?

* For the Tanner Hudson crowd: He hauled in a pass from Blaine Gabbert on the left side about 15-yards deep. Hudson quickly turned upfield and got a nice gain.

* Brady throws low in traffic over the middle for Chris Godwin who goes low himself to secure the ball for a touchdown.

As you can see from the picture below, for about half the practice, Joe heard rumors the Bucs were practicing. Good thing Joe had his binoculars.

Joe’s vantage point of Bucs practice Tuesday morning. There appears to be a handful of players practicing.

Thank you, Joe, for sharing 🙂

Nice to finally hear about a camp where the #1 QB throws pretty passes, doesn’t give the ball up constantly to his defense to concern fans, and we don’t have to hear apologetic/excuse/false reassurance BS from Arians about how the poor QB is taking on too much, is new to the offense, is trying too hard, has an OC he can relate do, all that BS.

Funny how winners find a way to just get it done. Losers say they are balling, tell all check their sheet, and bring up God and family every day as crutch for their failure.

That picture is hilarious? Thanks for the update on our pylon.

Loved hearing the news on Brady. Sounds like he might got one more year left in him. I wont lie. It’s been a concern.

Oh. We cant run to the right?

Maybe its because we have 6-6, 300 pound Division 3 Ledt Tackle being forced into the starting RG spot. Again.

    Pamphile, Benenocht and Cappa.

    Lichts picks. Gifted starting jobs.

At the most important position for a running gane. Right Guard.

Anybody else wonder we havent been able to run the ball since Logan Mankins was forces to retire so Licht could bring in Sweazy.

Brady is the best of all time and in my opinion is the #2 QB in the NFL right now and that is only because he does not have the elite scrambling ability that Mahomes does.

    teacherman777:

I am not saying you are wrong about Cappa, but the Bucs did have the #1 run defense in the NFL last year.

  10. PSL Bob Says:

At least you were able to provide some tidbits of how things are going. Appreciate the coverage Joe!

  11. NashvilleBuc Says:

The passing accuracy is the very definition of game-changer. God help me I am starting to believe – again.

  12. AtlBuc Says:

In a lot of situations last year with Mike Evans caught the ball, he was not in a position to run because he had to make adjustments to make the reception. With Tom Brady’s accuracy, I see Evans, Godwin and all the other receivers having a big increase in yards after the catch

  13. Buczilla Says:

    Football! Thanks for this Joes.
